I'm the barrel manager at Laws Whiskey House. I have to say I had lots of fun picking the barrel samples we sent to SF Wine Trading Co! BW #1253 will always hold a special place in my heart. Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen! We truly love what we do here at Laws.

We learned, as a combat engineer, use the "punt" with explosives. Cutting the bottle in half and stuffing the bottom with C4, it will create a directional, molten glass slug, and go through virtually anything. Now that I have been flagged by the FBI, ATF and so on... Cheers, you bastards of magnificence.

I'm not "VibeCheck", but I was the one that spawned their comment. Forget the video now, but between Rex & Daniel, no one could think of what the divot in the bottom of the bottle was called. I responded with the name and "VibeCheck" provided the history and nerdy knowledge.

I bought a bottle of barrel select yesterday. 114 proof. When I opened it, before I even nosed a glass, I got a whiff of vinegar. When I poured it and nosed it I got very little nose. When I tasted it it was hot butterscotch and not much else. So I added some water and I got butterscotch and grass. This was the neck pour so I'm going to leave it be for a while to see if the oxygen changes anything. That being said, it really wasn't unpleasant, but it wasn't the flavor bomb you described a year ago. And yes, I know that each barrel is going to be different. But this one has a sticker that says it was selected by "the owner" so....

Regarding a choice for something other that JD, it can also depend on what they like about that particular whiskey. A friend of mine is really into the sweetness of whiskeys, and has always enjoyed JD on the rocks. I have a nice little collection, and I introduced him to angle's envy last year, which he immediately loved. Because there is a sweetness there, he was able to relate that particular dram as being not too dissimilar to what he already enjoys. If you can find out what a person likes about a particular whiskey, it makes things easier on which direction to take them on their journey.

I’ve never really been a die hard liquor guy, but thanks to this channel I started my whiskey journey this past weekend. I’ve had most of the lower quality whisk(e)ys earlier in my teenage days so I decided to go with ardbeg 10 and laphroaig 10. I couldn’t have been more impressed with the overall unique taste of them both. Definitely worth the price relative to a cheaper whisk(e)y and anyone saying it’s not must be a cigarette smoker and can’t taste shit anyway 🤣😂

    Enjoyed the vid, Gent's.
Loved your Buffalo Trace alternate idea for Jack Daniel's. About 10-12 years ago my daughter went to Total Wine looking for a birthday gift for me. At that time I was hardcore Jack Daniel's products only in regards to American Whiskey. My primary choice overall is Highland and Speyside Single Malt's.
Anyway, she wanted to get me something different. After conversing with the store manager; she (yes, the manager was a 'she') recommended Buffalo Trace as an addition to my JD collection.
After opening my gift, I gave her a raised eyebrow. I grabbed 2 glasses and poured one for each of us. After we took a drink, I put my glass down and glared (😉) at her, then gave her a big hug 🤗. That was the first time I'd had Kentucky Bourbon since the mid-80's and enjoyed it 🥃👍.
Also, I wholeheartedly recommend the Jack Daniel's Sinatra Select to anyone looking for a gift for someone special. It's worth the $175-$210 (based on your location).

The most common mistake I see whiskey nerds making when trying to convert more moderate whisky drinkers is going too high with the proof. If someone is used to drinking 80 proof stuff they're probably not going to react very well to anything stronger than the low hundreds.
I visited some friends over Christmas Eve whose favorite whiskey is standard Jack Daniels #7, and I brought a selection of whiskies for them to try. Smoke Wagon Straight Bourbon ended up being the favorite.

Laws 4 Grain got me wondering. When Daniel was giving us a history lesson, he said that Irish whiskey was partially made with (un-malted) barley due to English tax laws at the time. So...
