  • In this episode of Raw Craft, Anthony Bourdain heads to The Balvenie distillery in Dufftown, Scotland to explore the magic and tradition of whisky making practiced there since 1892. Meet the special group of Scots who have kept the age-old process of single malt whisky making alive over the generations. Episode directed by filmmaker Rob Meyer.
Hundreds of years of experience go into making of each batch of whisky. From the cooper to the malt Man to the coppersmith - it's a craft the whole way through. Legendary Malt Master, David Stewart in his sixth decade, guides the ship making ground breaking whiskies along the way. Each craftsmen is dedicated and serious about their work resulting in some of the best whiskies in the world.
The Balvenie Distillery alliance with craft is a result of the brand’s choice to embrace the old way. Balvenie is dedicated to the process of using the five rare crafts of Scotch whisky making to create The Balvenie’s distinctive taste and exceptional quality. It is the only distillery that still grows its own barley, malts in its own traditional malting floor, employs coopers to tend every cask, a coppersmith to maintain the stills and a malt master to ensure the resulting spirit is consistently excellent.
Warehouse 24 offers its members access to exclusive events, early notice of new product releases and insight & knowledge from The Balvenie’s team of craftsmen. Join here: us.thebalvenie.com/....

This episode is why I love Anthony Bourdain. He's the perfect guest to meet and converse with the men and women at distillery such as Balvenie. I can't think of anyone else who could do it better. My thoughts go out to you and your loved ones. I'll raise a glass of Balvenie in honour to you. Thanks for the memories. Slainte Mahath.

What they do is what they are. That's what he will be remembered for. He put the people who do great things first in all of his shows. And he was one of those people himself. without eveb realising it.

Excellent production, thanks for sharing these. I'll likely add a Balvenie to my (mostly Islay) shelf next week.
I think you could have paid more homage and respect to David Stewart's immense skill. He is an absolute legend and one of the world's greatest masters, in my opinion. The degree of experience, nuance, and focus it takes to develop such an acute nose and palette is underestimated. It's a lifetime of dedication, like most crafts.
