  • Anthony Bourdain and The Balvenie visit the legendary "boxing tailor," Frank Shattuck, in Upstate New York to learn what it takes to create true "bench-made suits." Episode directed by filmmaker Rob Meyer.
The Balvenie’s longstanding alliance with craft is a result of the distillery’s dedication to the five rare crafts of whisky making, which allow them to achieve their distinctive taste and exceptional quality. The Balvenie still grows its own barley, still malts in its own floor maltings, employs a team of coopers to tend its casks, a coppersmith to maintain its stills, and has in its service the most experienced Malt Master in Scotland.
Warehouse 24 offers its members access to exclusive events, early notice of new product releases and insight & knowledge from The Balvenie’s team of craftsmen. Join here: us.thebalvenie.com/warehouse2....

Love, love, love that last scene of them walking arm in arm.
The master tailor is elated with his pupil, and you can almost feel the reverence Frank feels for him in return.
    Beautiful!

Frank The Boxer: You're pretty normal.
Bordain: First time I've heard that.
God gained one cool dude. You are missed, Tony.
I like to think that we all seen something in you, Tony, that inspired us all to be a little more cool, alot more adventurous, refreshingly humble and kind, grateful, and always on time. A classic and cultured gentleman, telling timeless stories that always evoke a sense of childlike wonder in all of us, echoing a fascination in hope for all of humanity. Your spirit endures.

Really enjoyed this, more so than anything else from this series of episodes. Just watching this man work and how meticulous he is about everything and watching him take advice from Raphael really brings out his character. Especially loved the ending when he is walking Raphael across the street in NYC. That to me encapsulates the soul of the city. Millions of people and you wouldn't know it from passing by them but those two men are geniuses and truly represent what taking pride in ones work stands for. Excellent video

A 10 year apprenticeship is not uncommon to reach journeyman level, then comes the years to become a master. Few companies will invest that much time in an individual. This leads to the cut rate products we have today.

My grandfather is Frank Cesta. I remember years ago at his shop in Syracuse Frank the boxer was discussing how he wanted to learn how to make suits. My grandfather was hesitant as he knew what kind of work and commitment goes into making a suit. My grandfather told me a good lapel has 700 stiches.
I was the first grandson or relative to ask grandpa to make me a suit.
He first said, "You don't want me to make you a suit."
I replied, "Yes grandpa I do, you're the best. I'll pay for it of course."
He says, " Go to the department store and get a nice suit."
So that was that. I left and flew back to Florida. I was about 21 years old. About 3 months later I get a call. It was grandpa Frank. He says, "You want me to make you a suit? Come on up and I'll measure you." He made me a suit!
I still have that suit. It no longer fits and when I took it to the tailor they couldn't fix it or lengthen it because Frank Cesta had made it to perfection. I guess I'll just have to go back to size 32 waist!!

Yes, the stitches are hidden but those stitches make or break a suit, believe me. my aunt was a superb seamstress and she was very particular about how you stitch and sew a dress/shirt. She taught me the basics of sewing and if she's not happy with my stitches she makes me undo everything.
