However, I told her to just smell the Ardbeg and she says she smelled Vanilla of all things. After a sip, it was the first whiskey she actually kinda liked! Time drift is a thing too, opened or not. Opened a bit more, but the air in the bottle can only absorb a small amount of alcohol, and impart little to the whiskey. Though,..... a near empty bottle of anything is always odd. I just bought my first MONKEY SHOULDER today, and tried it. Very "Speyside"! This is exceptionally approachable. Citrus and candy, then caramel apple, then apricot and pear with a great malt note on it. Mmmm tasty.

I drink a lot of WT 101 and I notice pretty significant differences in bottles. Most bottles are great, but sometimes I get one that is harsh, like the juice wasn’t aged long enough. I have a theory that the holiday season bottles are lower quality because they have to pump out a lot more product and blend more “new” whisky in batches.

Really strong grain funk as I was immediately overpowered by the smell and taste of feet. Bought another bottle 2 weeks ago to try it again and much less funk & more fruit and honey.

I started out on Johnny Walker (mostly red, black when I could afford it) and one of the things I didn't like about it was how different bottles could be. The neck air gap could definitely affect the flavour by a little oxidation. I've tried the same experiment with 2 bottles from a twin pack of Monkey Shoulder, with one opened around a month before the other, and the full level just below the neck of the open bottle.
I've often noticed the flavour changing after even just a few days with neck fill bottles, sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the worse, but that was the first time I tried basically the exact same bottles back to back, but one opened for a month.
    Edit for spelling error

Hey Daniel and Rex! So my two reviews are about 5 years apart, and I noticed the same thing, flavour drift, in a big way. I think when you look at the marketing changes, and the ramped up sales of Kininvie, my conclusion is that either a) young Aisla Bay is being used in lieu of Kininvie(imagery of its stills no longer used) or b)this is now a quadruple malt of Glenfiddich Balvenie Kininvie and Ailsa Bay.
It dropped 8 points for me. Makes me wish I had grabbed an extra like you but who’da thought I’d miss old Monkey Shoulder???

Call it a 2015, knowing they could also be some 2002, 1999, etc. in it. Or, just keep the vintage dates to single barrel options? Love this vintage date idea.

Love the Flavour Drift series! I think revisiting more old whisky reviews to see how your opinions of them have changed would also be cool. I recently tried Rowan's Creek (wasn't a big fan) and I went back and watched the Vault review. It was only episode 42 and you guys were almost offended by it until you added water. I'd be curious if it would hit you two the same way now.

"Ya can fool some of the people some of the time, but ya can't fool all the people all the time." EW Black label is #2 in the WORLD for a good reason, Heaven Hill. They really are pretty good at the craft, and brilliant at product and marketing.

So Total Wine has it listed for the store. It is interesting, that they list two different ones. One that is a 750ml, and 1.75L. If you look at them there, the color is totally different. The 1.75 is much darker then the 750 bottle. So I wonder if the put different mix with the different size bottle...

You’re not too far off the mark actually. The name “monkey shoulder” was originally a shoulder issue that many distillery workers developed, causing the arm to hang down like a monkeys- hence the name. The whiskey takes its name from that.

Bought a fresh bottle of monkey shoulder today and was super excited for it. Unfortunately I burnt the shit out of my mouth before I had a chance to and now I can’t taste anything...

Balblair states (or, acc. to wiki, it seems that they used to state it up to 2019) the year of distillation and the year of bottling on the label.
