- The Bruichladdich boys are known for constant innovation, and that means classically good bottles can wildly change over time. Rex and Daniel try the new version of Port Charlotte and compare to the previous expression.
Big thanks to Nelson Tilling for the bottle. Cheers ya M.B.!
Just got engaged at the distillery yesterday. Cheers Bastards!
Now that's Brilliant! Congrats.
great stuff. im hoping to get a tour booked for September. doing atour of islay, can not wait.
Congrats! Slainte!!
Were you able to arrange the photographer hiding in the bushes to catch the moment?
@@Guentzel yep, we were eating lunch and photographer peaked over a fence and got pics.
I fully support doing re-reviews. There have been so many obscure and craft whiskies on the channel lately that I'd love to see new reviews of things I can actually go buy.
Very valid point, I guess sadly it depends where you hail from but that is nature of whiskey.
I completely agree. I’m not much of a bourbon fan myself, so some variety is nice.
Plus things can vary batch to batch and the grains year to year it’s interesting to know if the flavor has changed at all
I'm from Utah, so there's very limited selection by default. I've just gotten used to the idea I'll never buy the vast majority of the whiskeys and wines I want to try.
Hands down, my favorite 10 years peated single malt. Fantastic stuff!! A must in every peat head collection!!!
I must try it
How would you compare it to ardbeg ?
@@RichieH81 closer to Ardbeg than laphroig. Less medicinal flavors - more campfire smoke. It is unique in its own way love that malt
@@briantoplessbar4685 I have both at home waiting to be opened now. 👍🏼
Try the MRC version. It blows the 10 out of the water :D
My favourite 10-year-old Islay for sure! I know the feeling of not wanting people to buy it. It's already getting pretty expensive where I am.
Has anybody else noticed how buzzed they have got through this week's collection of videos? I am loving it, great videos!
I’ve found I really enjoy this Port Charlotte when I work my way up in Smokiness. start with monkey shoulder, hit up something in the middle then have this.
You men are very funny....in a very good way. The endless learning experience.
The touch of wine barrels used really elavates this
id buyed one from ferry for crismas botlle hope ill live to enjoy it if not hope some one else vill bottle looks that much tempting
You guys should do top ten best bottle designs as far as pourability, lack of spill. Johnnie walker easiest pouring bottle with narrow spout in my opinion. Powers gold good. Woodinville spillvilles.
Price/quality one off the best whisky's. Here in Belgium it's 66 euro. So very great price for a great scotch.
I think I have become immune to peat 🤣 I had an octomore 6.1 and a ardbeg 5 last weekend. Sipping on a port charlotte 10 now and I get the brine, but I expected more smoke in the taste
Best 10 year old Islay in my opinion. It is amazing stuff. It really opens up with a few drops, and I do mean drops, of water.
Definitely one of my all time favorites
One of my all time favorite whiskeys.
One of my favorite!
I LOOOOOOVE this whisky.
HATE HATE HATE the bottle! >:(
Thanks for outing me Daniel 😂😂😂 as he just mooched a bottle 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sounds like you were staying in Russleville, AR 😂 my family is from there and i have the same problem
A gentle brush of the fingertips, pbvious spark, calling it now the season finale will be the first on air kiss. Next season one of these boys is sporting assless chaps and a comicly small cowboy hat.
What makes you think it's not that way now...off camera.
I want it
Hearing rex say it's in his top 5.. Let's do some top lists 😏
Didn't even make it through the episode before I bought a bottle.
Well...damnit.
You've jinxed us Ontarians Rex(....and Daniel ...due to Rex's bad influence...lol)
The LCBO has a review for, but doesn't carry, Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Heavily Peated :-(
All they carry, (according to the website), from that distillery is;
Bruichladdich The Botanist Islay Dry Gin - 750ml ($52.75cdn)
Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie Scottish Barley - 750ml ($74.75cdn)
and
Bruichladdich Rare Cask Series 1988 30yo - 700ml ($1999.50cdn)
Maybe a controversial statement, not liking Rex in a black t-shirt. I liked his nonblack t-shirt look much better.
Port Charlotte is one of my all time favorites. I love the nose and the taste. It was my first whiskey, and I immediately fell in love. Its always my go to.
So when people ask me why I prefer “sometimes” a Good whiskey over sex, this whiskey demonstrates why.
The MRC:01
I was disappointed. Much more Sherry notes and malt sweetness than smoke
LAPHROAIG forever
Port chaz 10 is Beutiful
We need a Port Charlotte 10 vs Ardbeg 10 vs Laphioag 10 video!
the port charlotte is a totally different flavour, as its heavier peated than the other two.
@@jani0077 While PC is more peated based off PPM I wouldn't say that is peatier on the palate than Ardbeg. Still to me, PC is the most balanced and my favorite of the three.
@@codyyounkin9946 Yeah, ppm is such nonsense.
@@codyyounkin9946 Just got a bottle and yeah, of all my Islays I would say it's closest to Ardbeg 10. No not the same but definitely similar. In a blind tasting I feel confident I would have called it a different Ardbeg release. I like it a lot, probably tied with Ardbeg as my second favorite but I'm still firmly in Emma's camp. I just can't find anything better than Laphroaig.
I'm such a smoke addict I can't even detect the smoke in Ardbeg Wee Beastie or the Port Charlotte 10. Only Ardbeg 10 with Laphroaig 10 reigning supreme. Probably never going to be able to try Octomore 🤷♂️
My wife and I bought each other this bottle for Christmas last year, neither having ever tasted it. This was completely by accident. My wife wondered if we could return one bottle until she tasted it. Then she was glad we had two.
What a great story Mark!
Fuck I had the same reaction as they had halfway through this when I saw the notification. I LOVE THE PORT CHARLOTTE and now that it’s gotten the mooch top 5 stamp it’s gonna be hard to find! Damn you magnificent bastards!
I just found a bottle. Had to drive 20 miles to get it but they had it. Good stuff, I like it.
Just gotta say... you guys pump out videos like ANIMALS. I like sipping whiskey while watching your vids and my wife is beginning to suspect I have a problem. "Honey, I'm picking up notes of franken berries, dogwood, and aardvark hair. I'm not drinking to get buzzed!"
That time we touched hands over a bottle of Port Charlotte….
Lol
It's a time to come together over something beautiful!
Emma's been in the vault again.
A year later and every time I take a first sip of this I say “that'll getcha there ”.
"I'm not blastin' those dooks." Sure...
The opening reminded me of a question my pastor once asked me. "What is the definition of a surprise?"…
"A fark with a lump!"
exactly what a dook blaster would say
”May you steal your liver’s heart” - Automatic subtitles 😂
You're too late. Why didn't you tell me before I bought this absolutely disgusting bottle of whisky. MB's do not make my mistake and go buy a Laphroaig or something.
I would like for whoever put this “mind reading chip” in my mind for the whiskeys I’d like re reviewed to take it out cool thanks.
Port Charlotte, Goat noise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm just glad I don't have to wash Rex's underwear. We should take up a collection and buy Mrs. Mooch some flowers, a box of chocolates and some extra-strength laundry detergent. I'm sure she deserves them.
This is my absolute favorite scotch. Not overly smoky, really complex but easy on the palette especially for 100 proof. And the finish lingers and makes my mouth water…good stuff
So here is an interesting thing. I live in Ireland and burn turf for heating. T
When I clear out the fire the Ash normally smells like a peated malt Nd makes me want to have a dram. But if noticed that depending on who I buy my turf from the smell can be very different. Even if the source is only a few miles apart. Sometimes like a beautiful Lagavulin sometimes ashy and not nearly as pleasant. I now believe the turf source make a huge difference in whiskey.
Between this, An Oa, and Quarter cask Laphroaig it's a tough choice. They're such good mid-end scotches.
"What's the weirdest place you found good whiskey?"
Daniel: a liquor store
Ya don't say?
The new Port Charlotte heavily peated to my palette was a full 25%-30% different from the old Port Charlotte I tasted them side by side and the old bottle was more floral and briney while the new bottle is far smokier and earthier.
Rule 1 of the Bruichladdich Brigade .... we don't talk about the Bruichladdich. This risks us losing the Port Charlotte 10 to taters
Awww look at Brianna's Dads trying to slyly hold hands on camera. Isn't it cute! 🤣🤣
This is my go to Islay whiskey, absolutely love it.
I just tried this for the first time a couple weeks ago and holy crap! This is in the top three for me with Ardbeg and Talisker. Such a good whisky. Laphroaig is a close runner up.
Just got a bottle and it's moved up to a tie with Ardbeg for second. Still haven't found anything I like better than Laphroaig.
@@wingracer1614
Ardbeg is better than Laphroaig, IMO. Except for the QC, which I think is superior to Ardbeg 10. Presently, I like the Port Charlotte 10 the most though 😀
@@wet-read Everybody has their preferences and mine is Laphroaig. Team Emma still lives!
Best bottle in the business (good whiskey too, but the bottle itself is sleeeek)
It’s freaking amazing, can’t wait to pick up another bottle!
Good to see this again, one of my favorites. Great stuff!
This episode made me wonder if certain types of whiskey are more impacted by age and head space than others. I often get clay on the Classic Laddie, so that makes total sense. Nice episode, chodes!
I just bought my first bottle of Port Charlotte HP and my mind has been blown. It is now in my top 3 peated, and those three are in no particular order. This could easily be my number 1 on any given day.
I always love coming back to videos like this whenever I get a bottle of something I haven't had. Exploring it with the tribe is always fun.
It's still £35 on amazon so against your better judgement I picked up two bottles :)
Somehow this was 32 quid on Amazon UK for a heartbeat last week. Delivered today!
Nice. I just had to pay 80usd for a bottle and that's a good price around here.
Just compared Port Charlotte with Ardbeg 10. PC comes in hot with 100 proof, and although the depth is intense, the heat vaporizes or shortens some of what could have been the lasting peat flavor. It is like an Octomore in that the high peat levels sometimes get outshined by the alcohol content. On the other hand, Ardbeg 10's peat, which I feel is unique to Islay, lasts and lasts. I enjoyed the PC 10 year but I enjoyed the Ardbeg 10 more because of that unmistakable LASTING peat flavor.
I love this one, but I can't decide if i like it more than the Ardbeg 10. So I buy a bottle of each every few weeks.
Very different but similar. The ardbeg is a sherried sweet, the PC10 is a Sauternes sweet.
I only have 6 bottles so I’ll be ordering more!
I love the psychedelic edit you did over Rex's sexual experience having that peat 🤣
price/quality wise this is a great whisky
Daniel, you went metrosexual at 11:20 with no regrets. You proved you are confident in your masculinity. Rex, you got some so be happy.
So Rex goes for the thumb and forefinger technique?!
What a drink... My first whisky I bought after my brother mentioned I'd love it on account of my love of espressos. I'm now totally in love with Islays. .. Totally weird for a guy from Zambia. .... which could be a country most have not heard of
Uh oh. Rex, those orgasmic facial expressions are reserved only for the Uigeadail!
Uigeadail is jealous…
The cult is angry…
Have you BOOMERS (sorry millennial lmao) moved to a discord yet?! I refuse to use Facebook so, I feel disconnected from the tribe! Commonah!
Much love, cheers & respect to all the tribe you MF MB’z (RIP MF DOOM!) *Raise my Sherry Wood Penderyn Welsh Whiskey to y’all*
I'm an Ardbeg guy, but PC10 is my favorite 10 year old peated Islay.
I like both, but I would definitely go for Ardbeg Ten. It is a more unique dram. PC 10 is easier to drink (even though it is 4% stronger on alcohol) because of its wine casks and non-Islay Peat. I like the more robust and demanding Ardbeg Ten though. Also Im not a fan of Bruichladdich prices. Some of the Octomores are just overpriced "fashion" drams.
Seems like you're a Bruichladdich guy whom also likes Ardbeg on the side..
@@lukashavel7690 Agreed that it's an easier drink than the Ardbeg Ten, and also agreed that Bruichladdich prices are steep. The Port Charlotte Ten can be found for a similar price to the Ardbeg Ten in my area thankfully (though in some stores it's priced twice as much). It's actually precisely because it's an easy drinker that it's my favorite ten year old Islay. Not necessarily because I outright enjoy the flavor more than the Ardbeg and Laphroaig, but because I find it a little more versatile to have for different occasions while still having a decent level of peat.
@@frankphillips6485 Nah, not while Corryvreckan is my outright favorite whiskey. I just think PC10 fills certain spot in my collection better than the other Islay ten year olds.
@@lth_lch For that I have Kilkerran 12. :)
Well, after my second bottle of Port Charlotte 10 in the past eight months, I can say with conviction that the experience is excellent but that this child of Bruichladdich, unfortunately, powers over some of the mellow peated flavors I was expecting. PC10 has an unmistakable classic burn for 100-proof scotch, which seems to be overbearing to the sweet peat underneath. That lingering peat I have come to look for in Ardbeg 10 and Lagavulin 16.
Not saying the PC10 is a disappointment, but that the anticipation of the peat explosion resulted in a slight letdown. Would I purchase a third bottle? Probably not since I am hooked on that rich smoke and lasting mellow peat of some other Islay treasures.
The weirdest place a found nice whiskey was in Tokyo Disneyland Hotel sometime in July 2019. I was scouring Ozaka, Kyoto and Tokyo days before for this whiskey and I couldn’t find one.
But lo and behold, in drawer with the free coffee was 2 x 50ml bottles of Yamasaki 12 yo. So I checked my sister’s (she doesn’t drink whisky) mini bar and took those other 2 bottles as well.
lol... takes like alcohol... nuff said!
I have been waiting so long for this re-review. Seriously one of my favorite whiskies.
I swear Rex was having a bad bowel movement at the start of the video... 😁
Edit: They should put a number in the corner of the video, representing the number of reviews they had done that day. I'll bet the higher the number, the weirder the video...
I bought this bottle a few months ago and was saving it for an upcoming promotion. And damn it, I got the promotion this morning. Now I'm home being happy to open the bottle and find you airing this episode. Meant to be, you magnificent basterds
Well, since you like the PC 10 so much, maybe it could replace the L̶a̶g̶a̶v̶u̶l̶i̶n̶ Laphroaig 10 that's on the quintessential wall.
Please review McNair’s Lum Reek by Glenallachie, very underrated whisky and strangely smoky for a speyside
I like to contrast my cigars and whiskey. Mild cigars with dense whiskey and medium to full cigars with sweeter whiskey. 🤷♂️ just what I like.
So I just got my first ever bottle of Port Charlotte and I thought to myself, smells like BBQ? They must be high or something.
But I stuck my nose in that bottle and wtf, it does smell like BBQ. 😂
By far the best peated scotch I’ve ever tried! Love that deep rich smoke!
I'm about to buy a new bottle to replace my Arderg 10 I'm thinking of picking up a bottle of this but I'm not a fan of sweet islay's like laugvillian 16 prefer laphroig and ardberg should I give this a shot or would it be overly sweet to my taste? Given my feelings on laugvillian and if so what or some good not so sweet islay should i try?
I found fun on barbon on your movie.
Though my flavour sense is not
Sharp too, I know. Still I can have fun next to the pod. Folklore study is interesting on reflect with on scotch. This gives me for joy on studying on living culture on spirit.
Don't worry Rex, I'm off to Islay in July. When I visit bruichladdich, I'll be sure to buy a few bottles so that they won't be imported to anyone else....
Just got another bottle of this a couple days ago. SO damn good. Bruichladdich has yet to disappoint, and it was the Classic Laddie that opened my eyes to Scotch from bourbon and rye
Dude(s), WTH? Your buddies at Reserve Bar do not ship to Wyoming. again WTH? I have to order from Astor Wine & Spirits.
3:40 Rex looks like he’s about to sacrifice a whole herd of goats.
I'm genuinely excited. I found a local whiskey group that has quarterly tastings in my state of Massachusetts. I joined and went to my 1st meeting last Friday. We had the privilege of tasting 5 of the Bruichladdich line. I'm not shocked the Classic Laddie and Islay Barley were in my wheelhouse. Lol the 2 Port Charlottes were good but Octomore blew my taste buds out. For my 1st time trying Peated whiskey, I'm excited to try more.
After watching some of the vids about the Trader Joe's Islays, it seems like a standard practice when making young whiskeys is to sacrifice the back end to try to ratchet up all the flavors on the front end and on the nose. Like they won't have a chance to let the notes develop in the casks, so they just crank them up and sacrifice the layering and staying power. Am I off on this?
I just bought my first Port Charlotte last week. When I opened the tube I smelled the juice in it. I opened the bottles and felt it wasn’t as heavily peated as I thought. Can you lose peat because of a small leak from a cork?
You were likely in the liquor store in New Blaine, Arkansas. Its right on the border of that dry county (Yell County)
I get like a very salty, smoked, barbecued meat with like a very complex sweet marinade on there. It’s what I get every time. And, I can taste the saltiness in my mouth for hours after
Yup, still a good episode 🤙🏽🥃🤷♂️🤦♂️🤪
I've been to the same place and same liquor store in AR, that hilarious. We were equally shocked to find that it was a dry country.
I’m huge fan of the classic laddie but this one taste like burnt rubber to me.. maybe I’m just not there yet lol 🤷🏽♂️
So I finally found a bottle of Port Charlotte 10 and all I can say is if you like burbon or mezcal or scotch or anything for that matter it will hook you up. Thank you for putting this in my top 5 too my brother
drinking it along with you! NOBODY BUY IT hahahaha, more for the rest of us!
I made the mistake of skulling a bottle of Port Charlotte 🙃 needless to say it was nothing but pain and suffering.
Lovely in a proper glass
Love your reviews just bought this ,love it already very much like latakia tobacco, or Kentucky fire cured cigars,
