Thanks for the tip on this one - it's reasonably priced here too though our prices are a bit to bear.
And thanks for the further description on the added water. You're a wealth of knowlegde Ralphy and it's much appreciated.
I enjoy nosing and tasting then listening to your experienced take, which always helps me find what I'm missing.
Those tannins were very noticeable to me without the water. Thanks again Ralphy.
Ralfy, these are NOT genuine Caribbean Rum barrels which previously held maturing Rum and were then shipped to Scotland. These are Virgin Oak barrels and rejuvenated and reconstructed casks which have been seasoned with Caribbean Rum in the Pernod Ricard / Chivas Brothers cooperage in the Glenlivet distillery in Scotland. A quick phone call to the distillery will confirm this. That's how they can keep the price down. Had they been genuine then the price would be a lot higher, IMO.
Well same with most sherry casks these days. Most of them were never used to mature real proper sherry. As long as the end result is good, we have to accept it. otherwise a bottle of sherried single malt would be even more obscenely expensive as it is now.
@@hinglemccringleberry5431 Not quite the same. Sherry Casks are custom ordered by distilleries in Scotland but are actually made from scratch in tonelerías (cooperages) in Spain. They are seasoned with young sherry for around 12-24 months, emptied and after Quality checks, are then partially filled with better quality sherry for the transport to Scotland. There is some Ex-Sherry Cask rejuvenation going on in Scotland, particularly by Diageo, where they are also re-seasoned in Scotland, but most are actually sent back to Spain for the re-seasoning processing.
Ralfy is all about opinion, not facts!
As others have noted, it’s also 40% ABV here in the USA. Having said that, the bottle is bigger at 750 ml (or 75 cl), so we get an extra “mini” of liquid.
I do think there is a place for low-priced supermarket brands. Not everyone can afford $100 plus for a bottle of whisky. We are in some ways fortunate to have a wider variety of choices and alternatives than ever before. It is even better when when one of these lower price bottlings turn out like this one.
Yeah, and cool that Ralfy takes the time to review this ones.
Love how the cat seems to know exactly where the camera is and places himself to completely block Ralfy! 😂
I like that Carribean Reserve in the summer time when you don't want anything heavy or smoky, Just want something light that can be enjoyed over ice or with anything barbecued
I love the Caribbean Reserve. Nice review Ralfy. Thank you.
This is my go to inexpensive single malt. Very surprised you reviewed it, but not surprised in your reaction.
Good Ralfy, thank you.
"low spiritiness" - thats me on a Monday morning - great review as alway Ralfy
Another excellent review Ralfy, we really enjoyed your presentation, as usual.
Excellent review and cat cameo!!
Reminds me of how much I enjoyed the Illicit Still bottling.
I’ve got a backup of that one, goes to show a little more ABV makes a big difference.
Bought a bottle yesterday, and tested it. You are right about everything Ralfy, and I would like to add this whisky won't stay composed in the glass for very long, either because of a lack of cask integration, or low alcohol percentage, or both. After about two hours in the glass, it had lost most of its substance and complexity. So for us malt mates who like to sip on one dram for the entire night, well you might want to finish this one in less than an hour.
How are you possibly able to sip on one dram for an entire evening? A 5 ml dram takes me about 6 sips to finish.
Okay, first, I might have exaggerated "entire night", but let's at least get the quantities straight. A dram is usually 1.5 fl oz, which translates to 45 ml. Add to that approximately, usually, 5 ml of water, so now we have 50 ml of liquid. If we start with again approximately, usually, waiting 10 minutes to let the whisky aerate, and then take a few drops or, at most, 1 ml of liquid every few minutes, if we do the math, we're now at roughly 50 ml x 3 mins + 10 mins = 160 minutes for a typical dram, which is anywhere between two and a half to three hours. That's for a good whisky, worthy of taking our time. If the whisky is of lesser quality, then yeah, of course, we'll drink faster because the taste will not last anywhere near as long on our tongues.
@@jfgenie Thanks for sharing your typical whisky drinking experience. You seem to take smaller sips then I do, and you're very well disciplined.
In my own opinion, the CR was fine. But to me it didnt carry enough weight to go out of my way to purchase another bottle. I certainly wouldn't refuse a dram if offered, but there are other bottlings I'd rather spend on. Still, a decent malt.
I had a bottle last year and was very surprised how good it was. 🇦🇺
Ralfy, Another great review. It was a pleasure to meet you recently. when wandering the streets of Glasgow. A great little chat. Cheers.
I am surprised. I whouldn't had bought this for myself to be honest. I love Tomatin Legacy for a simple sipper, tho. Sometimes more than the 12yo. ...
Tomatin Legacy is well made whiskey and for the price it’s a steal.
As an old sailor I have a bit of a soft spot for Rum :-) That said in general I don't mind the various Rum cask whiskies out there. I've had this whisky and it's drinkable..
ralfy, always enjoy electric selections. They really charge me up. Sparks are flying!
Regarding "look out for IB Glenlivets" - it is worth mentioning that Cadenheads uses Glenlivet as a suffix sometimes in unrelated bottlings, for example Balmenach-Glenlivet while bottling single malt Balmenach
I believe this is a traditional thing that distillers used to do because Glenlivet was a very reputable brand back then. So they kind of did it to draw people’s attention to it. That’s what I’ve heard anyway, but I could be mistaken
@@terrortower666 That's indeed the case for a lot of older brands, even Macallan back in the day used the suffix to state they were from Speyside and had quality spirit. The Glenlivet distillery's trademarked as The Glenlivet, if it doesn't have "The" in the name, you can safely assume it's not a The Glenlivet.
@@terrortower666 That's true. Several neighbouring distilleries were in the habit of adding that as a suffix to cash in on its fame I guess.
I don't often buy Glenlivet, but I'll keep an eye out for this.
Glen Grant 10 is a great value whisky.
I just checked, I can actually get this one in my city in the states. I'll snag this one this week. $45 in Michigan
the cat and cat flap story was hilarious 🤣
I'm gonna have to try this one...
I grabbed one of these after seeing this. Not disappointed at all. I ended up adding a generous dose of this malt in to my international malt whiskey infinity bottle. All of the flavor notes mentioned in this review appear with great intensity now infused with recent Lagavulin 8, Stranahan Blue Peak, Limavady single malt, and Tomatin 18 infusions. This Glenlivet CR just did something magical to my infinity bottle. Indescribable and amazing...
A shocking review! I did not see that coming. $32 where I am and always on the shelves.
Loved the cat :)
Ralfy, I live in Los Angeles and the bottles we get here also 40% abv. I agree with your review. I think this is a good beginner scotch and it's cheap
My go to budget malt is Glen Moray sherry cask. Absolutely sublime at that price point.
I've had that one and I agree it is good. I've liked everything I've tried from that distillery including the standard NAS classic...
@ definitely a go to brand when you’re on a budget.
Not worth it in Australia. At around $65 you may as well pay a bit more and get something decent
@@ZX-wy1tw "Decent" as it regards personal taste in any kind of whisky is a highly relative term. I've had bottles of single malt scotch that reached upwards of $70 that do not compare to others I've had costing moderately to significantly much less...
I bought it recently because I was triggered by the rum cask finish.
Have to say, I was a little disappointed. Not much of the rum casks in my opinion, kinda boring for me.
I will give it another try anyway, maybe I find some more this time.
My first scotch. ❤ and down the rabbit hole I went.
If this is as good as Havana Club Spiced Rum..which i surprisingly liked..i may consider buying this!
Tried this when it first came out....
Wasn't overly impressed.
Perhaps it could be worth revisiting
I had a very similar reaction when I received this as a gift from someone who knew I liked whisky, but knows nothing about it.
Thought this was gonna be a dull boring bottle but I had a very similar reaction to you - this stuff is excellent. Probably one of the best rum cask whiskies I've ever had! Well deserved score.
kitty stole the show! :D This is also unfortunately only 40% in the US. And the price has gone up to typically around $40. Total Wine has a house brand "Shieldaig" NAS single malt that is wonderful for around $23 which is my current go-to for an inexpensive single malt.
Wow 83. Never had this one my radar, but maybe i gonna try it, when on a bargain.
Greetings Mr Ralfy, when this one first showed up in bottleshops in Aus, i grabbed 2 and it was $52 , i really enjoyed them , back then i was obsessed with these entry levels and used to collect them all , Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, i managed to gp up to 26 yr old, i know, just stupid. A few days ago, when i first watched your review in Patreon channel, I checked, and it is now $80!!! It's definitely not worth it on that price. My fav from all the Glenlivet are Nadurra oloroso, Code. Again, Nadurra is way too expensive now if i can find one, but certainly my fav.
Ralfy, have you thought on alcohancing this specific malt with high strength soft caribbean rum to increase the dram's alcohol %, same as you did with Laphroaig 10Y? It may be a good experience for an extras.
Currently 69 Cdn(on sale)here in Ontario Canada at LCBO...I bought a bottle...will give it a whirl.
Ralfy how about doing a "from the archive" series? We all know you've got loads of well-aged malts in the stash!
i picked up a bottle of this for £25 on amazon (same price now) and really enjoyed it. If they bottled it at 46% then they would probably ask £40 for it so i would argue you are getting more whisky because its bottled at 40% - just buy 2 🙂
The bigger brother of this whisky might be interesting:
Glenlivet 13yo Tropical Rum Cask Small Batch @ 48%, unchillfiltered. It's a Travel Retail Exclusive from Taiwan. And at around 48 euro, pretty good value!
£25 on UK Amazon.
Best Whisky reviewer ... definitely 🙂
I enjoy the CR...I get one liter bottle for 50US..
Glenn Levitt also makes Rum fusion in US.. higher strength and 100 bucks...more intense delivery
I have avoided this like the plague , but since you gave it a decent review i might just buy a bottle to enjoy when i dont want to use my more expensive stuff.
It's very nice.
40% here in Texas. May give it a try.
Same price here. GBP 28-28.50.
I love the cat.
Never found a rum aged/finished whiskey/whisky I have ever enjoyed. Guess I have my own prejudices as well.
Ledaig (Tobermory) have an awesome Rum/Smokey single malt. But then it's only available at the distillery and was about £120.
A malt mention suggestion - Mystical Malt-Munching Monsters
Glenlivet can make exceptionally good whisky. Their original 16yo cask strength Nadurra is one of my all-time favorites. Sure wish they would bring it back in its original formulation.
Rumsk(e)y : no thank you ! . . . nice vid. FOr the same price range, I would just get a El DOrado 15 y or Flora De Cana 15yo (aged in the Carribs, dark and mossy like a 24-25 yo Scotch !)
I picked up a bottle of this last week - I enjoyed it too but I'm sure I tasted some coconut. Maybe it's just me
So this gets an 83 ( stuffed full of caramel colouring, chill filtered and watered down to 40%) and a short while back you gave Benriach Smokey 12 a 77 which is a class whisky as confirmed by many RUclips reviewers. Much prefer the old scoring system as many of the recent scores make no sense. Just my opinion 😁
The CR delivers what it's promising for a low budget to a huge audience, while the Benriach Smokey series really doesn't at the price they charge. Ralfy's scoring takes that into acount fairly heavily. It's why he'll never score a Macallan even if the whisky's actually quite decent, except maybe one of those newer 100 proof Signatory Vintage ones, those are great and come at a fair price.
I have to disagree. I think the CR is a poor whisky and you can tell from the taste that the barrels are well used. There are better alternatives for the price range available in supermarkets. To me the Benriach Smokey 12 delivers on many fronts. Okay it‘s not the best Benriach and not the best whisky in its price range but it deserves far better than a mark of 77 which is totally misleading. When I started my whisky journey 8 years ago, I used to look to RUclips to get some guidance on what I should purchase and it worked well. I’m now more experienced with a significant number of bottles in my collection but do still watch certain reviewers. Obviously will not always agree with all the reviews as in this case, which just shows it’s all down to personal opinions, preferences and taste. Having said all that I do respect your opinion….
@@howardfoster4393 Thanks for the response!
Of course everybody has their own palate and budget so there's no golden standard (which is what makes it fun as well). Disagreements are to be expected every now and then. I, for one, really dislike Bunna 12 and Talisker 10. I'm aware that I'm a huge minority there, especially for an afficionado with 150ish bottles of Scotch in all styles.
At Waitrose, this is £26 - and a a Benriach is £27.50.
Must be the £ 1.50
The Benriach smoky 10's 35 at Waitrose and they don't carry the 12 online. These details matter. Glenlivet Illicit Still's not the CR either.
It's a very nice dram at a reasonable price. By the way what is the best procedure for an individual to sell valuable single bottles of aged malt?
I really didnt like the neck pour. Gave it another go after watching this review and I am soo glad i did. Thanks Ralphy, a decent dram at a decent price, wheres the downside to that? Always enjoy your reviews, and the OSWAS as per, were excellent!
Given it's Pernod Richard and the taste signature, I think it's casks from Goslings (which they also own, along with Havana Club but that taste profile isn't the same as I get off this).
"Brand Delivery" sucks. Talking to you Bowmore and even Caol Ila to a degree but I absolutely can't get enough of Caol Ila IBs.
Well this was surprising. I swore off NAS Glenlivet's after trying their Founder's Reserve, which was bland and harsh. I do love the Balvenie 14 Rum Cask so maybe this one may be worth a try as a poor man's alternative to that.
In US, it’s also 40% ABV…
That is what I remember as well. A couple of years ago it was $24 and change. I thought about it but passed on it because of the price. I won't next time.
Great review as always!
I need an advice. Edradour 12, Glenfarclas 15, Laphroaig Lore. Where I am I can get these 3 for approximately the same price. Never tried any of them Which one to pick? I tend more to Highlands and Campbeltown. Love meaty whiskies. Thanks in advance.
Laphroaig Lore is by far the most expensive of the three here in mainland Europe so for the same price, I'd buy that. All three are (supposedly) good whiskies.
"Miserable, Morbid, Festering, Drunkardly, Salty" malt mates mention.
Pear notes from a Pear-Note Rock-Hard whisky
Its not too bad. Bit too rummy and sweet for me.
@3:47 - King William pear? That fits, if the pear was named after King William IV, who was said by some wags of his time to have a pear-shaped head 😵🤣.... (P. S. - well, so much for that theory: it was actually Charles X of France who had the pear head 😣...should have fact-checked first!)
The cat🤣🤣. Is that cat Chill Filtered??
Amigo,Ralfy, hope all is great with you, the OSWA was a great night, thanks for the information, btw I'm not sure why all the information in the Patreon App is locked? Don't have access, is the membresy expired? Please if you let me know, muchas gracias 🤘
Hello Ralfy, thanks for reviewing whisky that’s available in sup. I buy Famous Grouse Smokey Black which is currently on sale at £16 what do you think about this?
Cheers
John
"at this point maybe I should be examining my own prejudices" ......why open that can of worms?
Will grab a bottle, but it still blows my mind that they don't put out a "chill filtered" and a "non chill filtered". They have over a decade of aficionados crying for this.
So the new Ralfy wants us to warm to £25, NAS, chill-filtered, coloured 40% supermarket whisky... Not impressed!
I suppose tastes vary. I bought a bottle a few years ago and most of it ended up going into making cocktail sauce or bbq sauce. Didn't like it at all.
Considering the quality of this whiskey, it is far too expensive. Very moderate whiskey along with the founder's and captain's reserve.
The Glenlivet aged 14. No other.
I cant get over how much this looks like a stereotypical bottle of white zinfandel.
I bought a bottle about 4 years ago.
Tasted it & the bottle hasn't been opened since.
Did not like it at all.
🎉
It has a lovely nose.
As I taste my jim beam honey, I realize it's shit...
Surprising to hear Glenlivet made a good one, pretty disappointed with their travel retail expressions
Quats...
I once respected your sage advice, but to give this supermarket drivel a higher mark over Speyburn 15 ncf and natural colour is just ridiculous.
Have you had this "drivel"?
@@jwire1977I have that’s why I made the comment.
I want to see your doctors review 😂😂😂 what did he tell you the last time he saw you?
Ah, the regular feline interference. Love it!
Yes yes…..until you get comfortably dumb…heaven
You'll review this cynical stuff. (fair enough)
Whe are you gonna lower yourself to review the new English Malts.. that actually have integrity!
