  • It has now been over a year since we first fired up the Modix Big60 (v2) 3D printer. Since then it has produced many many printed parts. So, have my thoughts changed?
In this second video of a 3-part series I discuss the wish list items I would like to see in the Big60 machines. Other than the modifications I've done (see part 1), what other design changes could make the Big60 even better?
Disclaimer: HartSmart Products is a Modix reseller. However, all opinions expressed are my own honest thoughts regarding my experiences with the Big60 v2.

It's great that you became a reseller! Congrats! One request I have is to have a large (5kg) capacity filament holder. I made one myself out of PVC and designed hinges that I bolt on to the uprights but it would be nice to have it come with that....being that the build area is 2x2x2, you need a lot of filament so it should be a given you will use large reels of filament.

Absolutely--I use large spools as well. Biggest I've used is 10kg so far. One project used almost 3 of them! In that case I ended up getting a cable caddy, which worked out great. This is the one I got: smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XUNNMZ4. I also used White Lithium Grease to make it spin nice and smoothly.

I would like about half of those as well, but maybe its better it doesn't have more stuff to keep the cost affordable.

The machines are excellent when used fully stock. But the ability to upgrade your machine anytime is one of the things I like about the Modix design. I definitely recommend the enclosure at an absolute minimum, though.

Thank you for the video reviews. You mentioned colors and the Palette 2S... if you haven't already, also consider the QuadFusion print head. It can be driven by the Duet 2 Wifi board and that would be a good upgrade board and filament wise. You may already know, but just in case, that print head can do filament blending / mixing at variable ratios from 1% to 100% for each of the 4 extruder gears.

Thanks for watching! I looked into the QuadFusion print head when it came out from M3D and it looks interesting. The idea of full color mixing with CMYK colors is pretty cool. I'd love to hear from actual users who might have experience with it!

@@ecostruder I've used one on a smaller printer. After my comment I realized that one drawback is flow rate.... It won't flow anywhere near enough filament for fast print speeds on second thought. If you don't mind slowing it all down for in trade for the color that might be okay, but large pieces would probably be painfully slow.

@@ecostruder they have a 0.5mm nozzle as the largest one. The one that comes with it is 0.35mm.

Better caster wheels which can help you level the frame: google for Machine-leveling casters
For when you need stability more often than you need to move it around.

Check out the casters Modix is using in the V3 machines (my latest video). Those are significantly better, and have a rubber foot that lowers down to isolate the machine from vibrations in the floor.

Now in 2021, even better, lighter, more practical than the Hemera: the Bondtech LGX

Bondtech makes some good stuff--I use the BMG on our Railcore 300ZLT and on our Lulzbot Taz 6. I haven't tried the LGX yet.

Hi, thanks for watching. Yes, I'd be happy to discuss your questions. You can email me at ECOstruder at HartSmartProducts.com. I will say, though that Modix machines are really not meant for beginners. I suggest getting yourself a small, inexpensive desktop printer first to learn 3D printing (like these: hartsmartproducts.com/collections/creality-3d-printers). Then move to a Modix machine once you have mastered 3D printing on the small machine. I'll watch for your message!
