  • We've been using the Modix Big-120X in the HartSmart Products shop for over a year now. So it's time to do our "Review After a Year" on this printer. First, let's discuss what's different from the V2 machines we reviewed last year. Newer is better...or is it??
    Disclosure: HartSmart Products is a Modix Reseller, but all opinions expressed are those of the ECOstruder alone. For more information, or to get a quote on a machine for yourself, check out the website here: hartsmartprodu...

    Hi. Thanks a lot for sharing it. I am thinking on buying the big meter or big 180x. Some questions:
    Would you recommend it for moderate industrial use?
    How does it perform with large nylon and fibre reinforced objects?
    What is the maximum steady temperature you gen in the chamber?
    What maximum output rate can you get from the supervolcano with good results? (Surface smoothness not very important)
    Thanks a lot!

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching! These are tricky questions to answer in a RUclips comment, but I'll give you a qualified yes. These machines are incredibly inexpensive for what you get. But that low price point means that they rely heavily upon the user to get the best out of them. This is why I won't sell a Modix printer to a customer that has never used an FDM/FFF printer before. It's not for beginners in any way. If you know how to print with nylon and fiber reinforced materials on a desktop printer then you'll have good luck doing it on a Modix printer as well. But any small issues you have on a desktop printer are much worse on a Modix printer.
      The chamber is passively heated, so the chamber temp will depend on what your bed temp is.
      I don't use the Supervolcano on any of my Modix printers anymore. There are a lot of superior hotends available these days, such as those available from Slice Engineering, Takoto, and others.
      If you have other questions please email ECOstruder@hartsmartproducts.com!

    Are you also using closed loop motors on this one, or if not do you think the quality is good enough at this point that they wouldn't make any difference? Thanks for the video! 👍
    (I'm considering a career change and starting a 3D printing business in the Netherlands, so I'm evaluating options)

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  3 года назад

      Nope, no closed loop motors on the V3 machine, just on our V2. Because the control board is different (no removable stepper drivers) it requires a different type of closed loop stepper than what we used previously. I know there are some out there, but we haven't yet tried it. Good luck with the potential career change!

    Hi a great and comprehensive review of the printer. I just bought a x120-v3 and I wonder if it wasn't the case to upgrade to the duex5 directly. How do i upgrade to duex5? I really like the automatic leveling option! In ours it is sometimes a nightmare to get it leveled well. Does the duex5 replace duet 2 or is it an add-on?

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  3 года назад

      Congrats on your new Big-120X! The Duex5 is a nice addition to the Duet 2 control board, but it's certainly not an "easy" upgrade to do. For one thing, each motor will now need its own stepper motor cable if you want to individually drive each of them for automated tilt adjustments. You'll also need to relocate some of the wires so they aren't using the expansion pins. Good luck with the modifications!

    Hi! Good Review! we are thinking to upgrade our machine from V2 to v3. How is the duex5 upgrade done? I really like the auto levelling option! In ours sometime is a nightmare to get it well levelled. The duex5 goes instead of the duet 2 or is it an add on?

      @ecostruder  Год назад

      Sorry to hear that you haven't had a lot of luck getting your Big-60 working. They certainly aren't the easiest machines to get started with, which is why we at HartSmart Products are always so insistent that people new to 3D printing don't start with them. Even those of us with 3D printing experience can struggle at times, but the machines are certainly capable of producing great results. I'm afraid there aren't any videos for how to get started out there, but if you shoot an email to support@modix3d.com the Modix support team should be able to assist. If you've already done that and are wanting more then HartSmart Products offers paid support packages as well. Contact Support@hsp3d.com to inquire about that. We'll spend some time diagnosing the issues and then can prescribe some potential fixes. Hopefully it's something simple that has just been overlooked!

      @ecostruder  Год назад

      @@deanlegg3075 Are you saying that you have good results printing PETG at 200C?!? If you are printing PETG at 200C then I can guarantee it isn't actually PETG on that spool. Either that, or your thermistor/PT100/PT1000 sensor is way off. We print PETG on our various Modix machines all the time, and are typically between 240C (small nozzles, printing slowly) and 270 (big nozzles printing very fast). Hard to know exactly what it is, but something is definitely not right with your setup as you have described it here.

      This is a pretty standard Cartesian/Rectilinear design. It's not coreXY or H-Bot or anything special like that. This makes it solid, and simple to understand when assembling and calibrating.

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  2 года назад

      I think you're probably referring to the "Push Plastic Bulk Spool Payoff System." That's the big stand that is meant to perfectly fit their 3kg, 10kg, 25kg, and even 50kg spools, allowing them to spin freely and feed smoothly into the printer. They are pretty basic, but surprisingly effective.

      Thanks for asking, but no, we are authorized to sell Modix printers in the USA only. I don't know who they've got in Australia right now, but if they don't have anyone then Modix can sell you a machine directly. Good luck with the big machine!

    Is this machine any good at doing large volume polycarbonate prints?

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  2 года назад +1

      Great question! I was skeptical that it would. But we did some multi-day long Polycarbonate prints for a client and had very little warping. The machine performed perfectly and the finished part was gorgeous (and crazy strong). Keep in mind that it will not print with PC as a completely stock machine. You'll need to upgrade your hotend to print with higher temp materials like PC. Check this out: hartsmartproducts.com/products/modix-premium-printhead-upgrade . You'll also need to coat your bed with something that PC will stick to. I like Magigoo PC, or possibly just a large sheet of Garolite. Both work great for PC.

      @@ecostruder Okay I checked out the premium printhead upgrade and I think I'll hold off until they come out with the dual extruder version.
      For the Modix I think I'll go for the Big Meter version, it maxes out in build capacity with a whopping 1 billion cubic millimeters, BANG!
      Do you have any recommendation for a sturdy durable reliable bulk PC pellet filament maker? I think this may be a requirement for affordable large volume printing.

We do sell the Big-60 along with all of the other models offered by Modix, but to keep costs down and to ensure that customers always get the latest and greatest updates we dropship them directly from the manufacturer to the customers' doors. We then support customers through the order process, assembly, print quality troubleshooting, and any warranty issues as they work with them. We'd be happy to help you with a Big-60. Please shoot an email to Products@hartsmartproducts.com and we'll get you an order form. Thanks for your interest!

    Would you recommend this printer for a teenager

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  3 года назад

      It would really depend on the teenager! But I do not recommend any Modix printer for a user that is new to 3D printing. This machines assume that you already know how to run a 3D printer, diagnose print quality issues, solve bed adhesion problems, repair broken parts, perform maintenance, etc. It is much easier to learn those things on a desktop printer than to learn them on a Modix printer.

      @@Jeff75684 Like I said, I really don't recommend this printer for beginners, regardless of their age. I would highly suggest the teenager in question get a desktop printer, such as a CR-10 or Ender-3 (this is why we started selling those on our website, www.hartsmartproducts.com). It's much easier to learn on something smaller and more accessible like those!

    It's remarkable how there now appear to be more shops selling modix printers than there are reviews of modix printers, or even owners of printers who have an internet connection
    Outside of this channel and like one or two others that also appear to be semi official modix affiliated, I can't even find users. No reddit/Facebook posts of people bragging or needing help, nothing
    And as somebody who really wants one that is a bit annoying :D
