  • It has now been over a year since we first fired up the Modix Big60 (v2) 3D printer. Since then it has produced many many printed parts. So, have my thoughts changed?
    In this final part of the Big60 v2 1-year review I go over my final thoughts about the machine after my experiences with it. What's good, what's bad, who's it a good fit for, and more!
    Disclaimer: HartSmart Products is a Modix reseller. However, all opinions expressed are my own honest thoughts regarding my experiences with the Big60 v2.

    Hey, this was a great review.
    I'm a college student and I've been looking at the Modix printers for awhile due to their scale.
    I've worked with a few 3D printers in the past, and have been looking for something that could do large scale prints for a decent price. Like you mentioned in the video the Modix is more directed towards commercial use.
    Would you suggest purchasing a Modix as a hobbyist?
    I've seen some large scale printers for very cheap, but they seem to max out around 500mm and I haven't read a lot of great things about the ones I've seen.
    How does the Big-60 compare to something like the Creality CR-10 S5?

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  3 года назад

      Johnathan, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! This is only part 1 (part 2 is in editing now), so some of your questions may be answered in the next one. However, yes, Modix machines are great for commercial as well as hobby use. The main reason why it's not specifically targeted at hobby users is that most hobby users are looking for lower cost desktop-style machines (like the Creality CR-10 S5 you mentioned). Some of my current customers are hobby users! The main issue with hobby machines at this size is the frame and motion system limitations. That's where the Modix machines shine. But they are most definitely not for beginners. So I only suggest this as an upgrade from a hobby-level machine, and not as a first printer. I hope that helps!

    Thanks for the review. 2020 is turning out to be a nightmare but at least it gives me time to watch these videos. Do you know of any large format printers that can print in detail?

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  4 года назад

      Yeah, 2020 isn't turning out very well so far, but thanks for watching ECOstruder videos in your down time! It's not so much that these large format machines CAN'T print in high detail (they definitely can), but just that it's not practical. If you put a different hotend on the Big60, such as the E3D V6, it is capable of producing very highly detailed prints. The problem is that there's then no point in having such a large format machine. If you put a small nozzle and detailed hotend on the Big60 it would take a week to print anything that's even partially capable of filling up the huge build volume of a machine like this. That's why I say it's really not meant for high detail prints--it is made to move filament through its Volcano hotend quickly and precisely. I hope that makes sense!

    • @campdw
      @campdw 3 года назад

      @@ecostruder This comment has been extremely helpful. I guess it is best not to use 3d designs that have lots of intricate detail because it would just be lost with a large format printer like this.

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  3 года назад

      @@campdw I had a customer print very small objects using a 0.40mm nozzle with an E3D V6 hotend. He printed the parts at 50 micron resolution and they were absolutely gorgeous. So yes, the machine is definitely capable of printing very high detail parts. But in my humble opinion, that's just not what these machines are meant to do. They are meant to make BIG things. So I prefer to run them faster with a bigger nozzle, and produce huge parts that fill up the build volume of the machines. Again, it's not a matter of what they CAN do, but what I believe it is PRACTICAL to do with them.

  • @kfitla

    Thanks for the review. Looks good. Do you use dissolvable filament on a second nozzle for support material? Or do you use just one nozzle for all and break the support off after? Thanks!

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  2 года назад

      I am not a big fan of soluble supports with these types of printers, so we almost always just use a single extruder & hotend to print the part and then break off the supports afterward. Dual extrusion takes a lot longer, is a lot more expensive, and has a higher chance of failure, so I avoid it whenever possible.

      Hi, and thanks for watching! This video is about a Big-60 version 2. Is that what you have? Or is it a version 3? Each version has its own Customers Zone page on the Modix website, so you'd want to go to the right one and then download the slicer profile for your preferred slicer (Simplify3D, Cura, or Slic3r/Prusaslicer). That will give you the settings you need for printing PLA. Changing to other materials is just a matter of following the material manufacturer's suggested settings. I hope that helps!

    Hi! I have a big 60 V2 also, but I always have trouble with the bed getting tilted after use. I level it perfectly, do 2-3 prints and the front right corner is suddenly a few mm lower than the back left. Have you heard about this problem? and is there a known fix for it?

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  10 месяцев назад

      Yeah...this is unfortunately a common problem with the Big-60 V2. Modix used a 3-ballscrew design which theoretically should work fine, but in practice it's hard to keep the big bed plate flat when it's only supported in 3 spots instead of 4. They changed this when they moved to V3 and the problem went away. Unfortunately there is no easy fix for this problem that I'm aware of. A thicker mic6 plate could help, or a totally different z-axis motion system (which would also require rewiring). Sorry I don't have a good option for you on this!

    I suggest that you add some more text to your website product page. Specifically, the brand / model number and more wording indicating that it is for sale through you. When doing a google search for places to buy the Big 120X V3 I didn't see your website until I found a link in your video review of it. With some better information posted on the website, the search engines will pick up on it better and you'll be more likely to be seen by others looking for this printer and places to get it. Also your contact us form, when submitted, goes to a page not found error. Hope this info helps.

    Thank you for the review! I have the same printer at my place of work. I noticed the filament was getting low so I changed the filament and now the print won't continue printing. • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching! It sounds like the filament detection sensor is triggering on your machine. If it's faulty, then you can just unplug it to finish that print and then fix or replace it after the print is done. Good luck!

    Looking at the big benchy with all that material layed down, I’m wondering, what’s your method for keeping corners from warping/pulling up from the bed? I’m having trouble with some models badly warping when using a super volcano to print PLA pro on a pei flexplate at 50c.

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  3 года назад

      Yes, that is one of the challenges with large prints--those warping forces compound across the length and height of the object, so they can be quite strong on big parts. I had an imprint of the bottom of the benchy on the PEI sheet in my Big-60 for quite a while after this print. But it did stay down without any special settings or adhesives. I run my bed closer to 70C for PLA to account for the heat loss through the thick aluminum plate, magnetic base plate, spring steel flex plate, and then the top sheet of PEI. Seems to work quite well for me!

      @@hardlife3844 Yep, I just got a bill from FedEx for about $1500 for duties on my 120X. I have filed a dispute with FedEx because they assessed it at 25% tariff as a 3D printer, rather than a lower amount for boxes of parts (which it is). These duties seem to be charged by customs randomly--some get hit with the 25% tariff, but most do not. I wish it was more consistent. In any case, it doesn't hurt to file a dispute as well. Just shoot an email to DutyTaxDisputes@fedex.com and be sure to include the invoice number you are disputing.

    Will there be reviews about the v3 and the new models as well?

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  4 года назад +1

      Short answer: YES!
      Longer answer: I filmed the entire build process for my 120X v3, with commentary all along the way. It's a massive amount of content to work through editing and I haven't had a spare second to work with it. I also filmed a timelapse of the Big60 v3 build I did for a customer, then recorded some voiceover to go with it. That's a much shorter video and doesn't give as much detail, but at least shows the build process. I hope to have that posted next week. Depending on how things go I may just have to do a quick "review" video of the v3 machines and forgo editing the giant mountain of 120X build footage. Thanks for watching!

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  4 года назад +1

      Previously n the v2 machines I haven't cared for the dual extruder design. It used a direct Titan extruder for the primary and a Bowden Titan extruder for the secondary. But the new design for the v3 machines seems much better. It now uses side-by-side Titan Aero print heads. Having that short filament path seems like a pretty great design. I'd still prefer an E3D toolchanger design...but that's a whole different level of build! I have a secondary print head coming for my 120X v3 right now. When I receive it and get it dialed in I'll be sure to do a video about it! As for slicers, yes, I still think Simplify3D is the best option. Others are very good as well, but I still think S3D is the best one available.

      Not sure where it would go, but that's a possibility, yes. Maybe to hold the chain about halfway, where it doesn't move as much? Truthfully, I think the best option would be to just do the v2 to v3 upgrade that Modix just released. The v3 motion system improves the drag chain placement by making it bend upward instead of downward. Check it out: hartsmartproducts.com/products/modix-version-3-0-upgrade-kit-motion-system-dual-direct-drive. The only downside is if you don't also want to upgrade the controller to a Duet + Touchscreen then it's a bit spendy.

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  4 года назад +1

      I haven't worked with any v1 machines--just v2 and v3. But the main thing that can be tricky about the 3 ball screw setup is that when you manually turn one of them they all want to turn. This is due to how they are all wired to, and controlled by the same stepper driver. If you turn one very slowly then it shouldn't produce enough current to move the others. Alternatively, you can have someone hold the others while you turn one to prevent them from moving at the same time. However, the easiest method might just be to unplug the z-axis wires from the motors and adjust them to your heart's content. Good luck!

    Has the V3 improved its dual extruder capability? Particularly soluble supports?

    • @ecostruder
      @ecostruder  4 года назад +1

      Yes! They are now utilizing dual direct drive Titan Aeros. I still haven't done much printing with the dual extruder setup at this point, but this is a much better arrangement than the previous hybrid (direct & bowden) Titan setup on their v2 machines. I should be printing with both nozzles sometime in the near future and then I can comment on my own real-world experiences versus what seems good on paper.
