Some of this technical info is incorrect and missleading. I have worked at a Chevy Dealership as an Engine Tech for 10 years and currently work at a LS Engine Performance Shop.
1.) Direct Injection has been around for years now, and most if not all manufactures are going over to it. It can provide a significant increase in overall power due to a more accurate spray pattern that is not affected by outside forces from the engine. VW used D.I. on most if not all of their engines and have been for years. Like you said, Buy a Catch Can with a Cleanside Separator. I use one on my 2013 Silverado and a catch can can benefit any engine with a PCV System, not just a DI engine. Every engine can accumulate oil in the intake with a PCV system. Yes, Direct Injection engines do not flow fuel over the intake valves thus cleaning them, so they gum up faster. Any DI engine manufacturer recommends to have the intake cleaned out using a chemical that is sprayed in the intake every 25,000 miles or so. GM does this service for $75.
2.) 0w20, 0w30, and 0w40 oils have been used for a while now. The "0w" part (W = Winter) only effects the oil viscosity when its below a certain temperature. Once above 100 degree's, the 0 weight plays no part anymore. When the oil/engine is cold, it acts as 0 weight to aid in flow when the engine is cold, once above 100 degrees, it acts as 20 weight. New engines these days have very tight and precise clearances that need a very thin oil, such as 0w, to flow into all the bearings when cold. Aluminum engine blocks/heads, when warm, expands allowing for more clearances in certain areas, meaning when the engine is cold, the clearances are at their tightest. This is why new engines need a very thin oil when cold, and a thicker oil when warm.
The increased oil capacity has nothing to do with the oil weight, and is for longer oil change intervals and engine oil cooling. It takes longer for more oil to heat up than a lesser amount. It also allows the oil to cool faster since it takes longer for the oil to go in a "loop" giving it a chance to cool at a faster rate. Greater oil capacities will also go further before needing an oil change. It takes more time for the oil to become contaminated in a larger capacity than a smaller. There is a reason a Big Rig truck uses 8-15 gallons of engine oil and will go 15-20,000 miles before needing an oil change. That oil also goes through harsh cycles pulling 80,000+ lbs GCWR.
Now, as for price. For the 8.5-qt. Engine, I can go to Walmart and buy (2x) 5-qt. jugs (10 qts) of Mobil 1 Extended Performance Full Synthetic 0w20 and Mobil 1 Oil Filter for less than $53 (Each 5-qt. jug is $24 and the filter is $5). For the 6-qt Engine, I can also buy (1x) 5-qt jug, (2x) 1-qt jugs of Mobil 1 Extended Performance Full Synthetic 0w20 and a Oil Filter for $49. Each 1-qt. jug is $10, while the 5-qt. jug is $24. So, the added oil capacity of the 8.5-qt. L83 Engine has a difference of $4, not really a difference at all, and it is always better to have a little extra oil on hand.
3.) GM offers an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller for every truck, it is a factory installed option, and can be ordered with the truck. Like you said, you can add a aftermarket one, such as the Prodigy P3, to your truck and will take you 10 minutes to install. The truck has the included wiring and you just splice them together and mount the controller. My Truck has the Factory OEM Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, known as the JL4 System, and I added a prodigy P3 to use instead. The Factory system did not work with Electric over Hydraulic Brakes. Now the 2014+ models with the JL4 integrated system may work with that now.
4.) The Headlights, well that's all a matter of personal preference. Like you said, you can purchase the higher trim headlights or aftermarket and add it to your truck.
5.) The ride height is pretty much equal to the Ram. Ram 1500 trucks sit pretty low as well. GM designed the truck for arrow dynamics and is what helps you get that "amazing" fuel economy. If you maintain the same tire size and increase the rim size to 20's, your ride quality will worsen. The less sidewall on the tire means less flex or bounce, which gives it more of a springy ride. GM designed these trucks for comfort, fuel economy, towing, and with offroad in mind. They were not intended for crazy pffrpad use out of the box. If you want to increase the ride height without affecting the ride quality to much, look into a Top Gunz 2.5" leveling kit along with a 1.25" taller rear block from Ready Lift. I would not lift the front any higher than 2.5" with a spring spacer kit, it will put to much stress on the 4wd parts such as the cvs causing excessive wear and can/will break. You can always do what I did and lift the truck, I went with a Rancho lift. I have also installed a McGaughys 7-9" adjustable lift on a customers truck befor with 35's. Probably one of the nicest kits I have installed that is well built and not ridiculously overpriced.

It's all good, man! I wish I knew much more about engines than what I know. Granted, I probably could disassemble a 350 SBC and put it back together pretty easy, but beyond that, I'm still trying to learn the science to everything. A lot of what I had to say was opinion anyways. So, I knew most of that would come. Still, I appreciate the feedback and the education!

I had a Ford F-150 that went up to 230,000miles before I got rid of it ran great and sold it to a close friend and it’s still driving great. A lot of people really turned me on to the Chevy Silverado so I found a 2014 rally 2 edition which I thought was beautiful so I financed this truck and so far within the first week all 8 fuel injectors had to be replaced there’s a little jump sometimes when I’m driving and the famous Chevy shake is there at 70-80 mph. Have not been to excited about this investment so far I guess time will tell.

Hey brother I own a 2017 silverado I just bought although it is the wt which is very bare bones I still get cruise A/C power windows and locks. And I have the hid high intensity head lights. I am on the same feelings as you in regards to the way the truck sits so low. I am putting in a rough country level kit in the front end next week. Any feed back on the leveling kit? Will it harm anything in front end or change gas mileage drastically? I only have 17 in tires on mine. Also I'm thinking about the whole catch can thing after watching your video thank you for your videos you are good at explaining things.

#2 …. More oil capacity = longer engine life? What? Srsly? You’re complaining?

#4 they are lights…. They are meant to brighten things. They succeed in that capacity. If you want higher trim lights, buy the higher trim. 👍 Amazing.

Drove Chevy my entire life and the V4 fuel management system is what killed it for me. Only had 2 trucks...a 69 C10 I drove for 7 years and a 2001 stepside Silverado I drove for 13 years. My dad still drives his 1988 S10 he bought NEW in fall 1987. Unfortunately truck #3 had to be something different because GM ruined the 5.3 with that stupid V4 bullshit. So for the first time I bought a Ford...2011 4x4 supercrew with the 5.0 V8. It runs on all 8 cylinders all the time and gets 19mpg just running around in it and almost 22 on the highway. I am quite surprised and shocked how nice that damn 5.0 engine is. Now my point is if my Ford can get that good fuel mileage there is NO REASON the Chevy 5.3 can’t do the same and dump the V4 stupidity. The 5.3 was a fantastic engine and my 2001 model still runs like a champ

    • @bkranz-1283

JohnnyRebKy I was thinking the same thing! My 2013 f-150 single cab 5.0 gets about 23-24 highway. My friends single cab Chevy has that cylinder deactivation and doesn’t get any better mileage than me. Plus the power difference is noticeable (in the 5.0’s favor)

I have this same truck, but as a Crew Cab, and what I hate the most about it were the steps. It's like there tucked underneath the truck and it makes getting off the truck pretty hard. I took them off and had the Amp Research steps Installed and it's on a 7" suspension lift. I love the inside of the truck, but had to get rims and bigger tires to give my truck that aggressive look.

The build up your talking about can be taken care of with what is called Top Tier Fuel, even premium gas! That they say you don't need, but most Top Tier premium fuels have more or better anti deposit additives! Also you description of the foul injection system and how it works. But they way you described the way the injectors inject the fuel into the intake manifold is the old way, but direct injection is exactly what it says, the injectors are built into the combustion chamber in the head to inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber, so that is why the crankcase fumes will have an effect on the valves, cause the fuel never touches the intake valves anymore cause the fuel goes directly into the combustion chamber!!! The amount of oil now in the engine is not there because of the weight of oil, but to help cool the engine cause of the added heat with the extra power GM has engineered out of it with DI and higher compression, so your able to use regular fuel! As far as the headlights go, just get better aftermarket bulbs!!!one more thing, wheels do NOT make the truck or any vehicle sit higher! Only bigger tires or lifted suspension does that!

    • @shaneman20
      @shaneman20  7 лет назад

I try to run top tier as best as I can. There's a local CountryMark that has it, but I do run 87 and very rarely run much else. I have ran E85 through this truck a couple times, and it runs good and I'd like to run it a lot more, but just to get it and the mileage is the killer in running it more often. And also on the wheels, I do stand corrected on that. When I think of wheels, I sometimes think of both rims and tires. But case in point, there's a 2016 Silverado where I work at that has the 22s and running Michelins on it. Can't remember what size, but rim/tire combo can make a difference. When I said that, I had in my mind OEM stuff. So, if you buy these from the dealer and get whatever the dealer slaps on, it is a slightly raised height.

Height is only influenced by tire size, mostly with what is called aspect ratio. That's is second number is say 265/70/16. Number 265 is the mm in width, the number 70, means the sidewall of the tire is 70% as high as the width of the tire that tells you how high the tire is!!

That explains a lot. Every other place I've tried to find to explain the middle number has had me all jacked up. But I do stand corrected. Again, I was thinking OEM instead of aftermarket, and even then, you can put on whatever tire which would equal out. Not claiming that I didn't know that, but I explained it poorly. My bad! Learn something new every day.

My 14 has almost 80k miles, never had a catch can on it. It's too cold to install one and would end up freezing anyways 9 months out of the year. No oil consumption, no misfires, etc. It's not really that necessary and it's all stemming from fears of past GDI engines.
