Around 5:45 you can hear some of the most passionate religious music ever written. You don’t even have to be a Christian to feel the power of Bach’s love for Jesus. The brass setting the stage, the epic tenor line, the bass growing with “GROSS” and the other voices declaiming “REICH.”
This is the music that happens when someone with supreme talent also loves God with extreme fervor.

Hallo. I´m afraid that the order of Cantatas is not cronological. In fact, this BWV 1 belongs to the second cycle of choral Cantatas composed in 1725. Anyway, I agree with you: Bach is great. Thanks for reading. 😃😃😃

  • @jorgeurzuaurzua4011
    @jorgeurzuaurzua4011 5 лет назад +49

The initial choral is unbelievably beautiful and complex. The combination of solo violin and brass horns results in a joyous, surreal atmosphere appropriate for the Morgenstern. I could not believe this was Bach first work. In fact it is not. It was composed 1725 in Leipzig; thus, it is a mature piece. The BWV number one does not mean the first work composed; it means the first cantata registered in the BWV catalog. BWV enumerates all cantatas first (1 to 198) and then the passions and so on. It is confusing but this was the criterium used. At any rate, a superb cantata and the conduction by Rilling as usual impeccable. Thanks for posting.

    1.
    Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern
Voll Gnad und Wahrheit von dem Herrn,
    Die süße Wurzel Jesse!
Du Sohn Davids aus Jakobs Stamm,
    Mein König und mein Bräutigam,
    Hast mir mein Herz besessen,
    Lieblich,
    Freundlich,
Schön und herrlich, groß und ehrlich,
    reich von Gaben,
    Hoch und sehr prächtig erhaben.
    2.
Du wahrer Gottes und Marien Sohn,
    Du König derer Auserwählten,
Wie süß ist uns dies Lebenswort,
Nach dem die ersten Väter schon
    So Jahr' als Tage zählten,
    Das Gabriel mit Freuden dort
    In Bethlehem verheißen!
    O Süßigkeit, o Himmelsbrot,
Das weder Grab, Gefahr, noch Tod
    Aus unsern Herzen reißen.
    3.
    Erfüllet, ihr himmlischen göttlichen Flammen,
Die nach euch verlangende gläubige Brust!
Die Seelen empfinden die kräftigsten Triebe
    Der brünstigsten Liebe
Und schmecken auf Erden die himmlische Lust.
    4.
Ein irdscher Glanz, ein leiblich Licht
    Rührt meine Seele nicht;
Ein Freudenschein ist mir von Gott entstanden,
    Denn ein vollkommnes Gut,
    Des Heilands Leib und Blut,
    Ist zur Erquickung da.
    So muss uns ja
    Der überreiche Segen,
    Der uns von Ewigkeit bestimmt
Und unser Glaube zu sich nimmt,
    Zum Dank und Preis bewegen.
    5.
Unser Mund und Ton der Saiten
    Sollen dir
    Für und für
    Dank und Opfer zubereiten.
    Herz und Sinnen sind erhoben,
    Lebenslang
    Mit Gesang,
    Großer König, dich zu loben.
    6.
Wie bin ich doch so herzlich froh,
Dass mein Schatz ist das A und O,
    Der Anfang und das Ende;
Er wird mich doch zu seinem Preis
    Aufnehmen in das Paradeis,
Des klopf ich in die Hände.
    Amen!
    Amen!
Komm, du schöne Freudenkrone, bleib nicht lange,
    Deiner wart ich mit Verlangen.

An amazing dynamic introduction! The violin tonality is awe-inspiring, and the french horn instruments join the violin to reinforce the polyphony harmony. When the legato choral joins the orchestra, it blooms into unique sonorous intonation. The soprano with the oboe is a profound and sublime melody. A perfect rendition of the bass singer with the violins resonates harmony. For those agnostic individuals, one feels close to the SUBLIME!

BWV 1: I begin my journey as a bored high school student to listen to every single piece that Bach wrote. It will be a long and arduous one, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
My thoughts on the actual piece:
Movement 1: It's really nice. I love the occasional use of the choir and the constantly playing polyphony between the strings and double reeds. Also I just adore baroque trumpet.
Movement 2: Not quite as good as 1, but nice nonetheless. Just a tad boring though.
Movement 3: I love the double reed in the background (I think it's an English horn but IDK). Goes surprisingly well with the soprano.
    Movement 4: Not my thing
Movement 5: A tad uninteresting, but the harpsichord line is nice.
Movement 6: Great. Combination of vocal harmony and the trumpet line is awesome.
    Overall: 8.2/10

On a different note, I commend Helmuth Rilling's tempo markings for this piece. It is fast in comparison to Nikolaus Harnoncourt's more conservative tempo in other recordings.
Bach entitled this first piece "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern" -- How Beautifully Shines the Morning Star -- and composed it (in 1725 in Leipzieg) for the festival of the Annunciation. In many Western cultures the Annunciation (March 25th) marked the first day of the new year. That's a holiday to get your energy flowing and Rilling's tempo justifies doing just that! In fact, this faster energy carries through the whole work and makes it a very spirited piece, brilliant in nature.

Note that Bach's works are NOT numbered by the date they were composed, but by the date they were cataloged. Bach composed this around 1725, when he was 40. The earliest cantata is generally considered to be BWV 150, although the BWV 4 is an extremely early work as well. Both BWV 150 and BWV 4 are AMAZING!

Anyone that would do that is not going to get far with this music. People that play and make music or "Audiophiles" figure out that there are frequencies that get choked out initially from recording, then from the size and capabilities of the speaker it is playing out of, as well as many other factors work to either highten the experience or choke it out. The best way to experience is obviously live. Really though if you have a decent system in you car or home, it can sound almost just as good as long as the recording is high quality. Really headphones are not the "best" way to listen, just different and they allow you to basicaly inject music into your head at low volume, but using a really good system allows you to crank it up and feel the bass frequencies through your whole body, which you can't get from head phones. It's like listening to dubstep with out any sub doesn't actually make sense... The music just becomes very superficial and stuck being flat sounding with only higher frequencies making all the sound when it's played by a tiny speaker. Head phones can work around this to a degree and add bass back in to the audio, but it's not the bass that is actually in the recording. It's a fake EQ bass.

    1.
    Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern
Voll Gnad und Wahrheit von dem Herrn,
    Die süße Wurzel Jesse!
Du Sohn Davids aus Jakobs Stamm,
    Mein König und mein Bräutigam,
    Hast mir mein Herz besessen,
    Lieblich,
    Freundlich,
Schön und herrlich, groß und ehrlich,
    reich von Gaben,
    Hoch und sehr prächtig erhaben.
    2.
Du wahrer Gottes und Marien Sohn,
    Du König derer Auserwählten,
Wie süß ist uns dies Lebenswort,
Nach dem die ersten Väter schon
    So Jahr' als Tage zählten,
    Das Gabriel mit Freuden dort
    In Bethlehem verheißen!
    O Süßigkeit, o Himmelsbrot,
Das weder Grab, Gefahr, noch Tod
    Aus unsern Herzen reißen.
    3.
    Erfüllet, ihr himmlischen göttlichen Flammen,
Die nach euch verlangende gläubige Brust!
Die Seelen empfinden die kräftigsten Triebe
    Der brünstigsten Liebe
Und schmecken auf Erden die himmlische Lust.
    4.
Ein irdscher Glanz, ein leiblich Licht
    Rührt meine Seele nicht;
Ein Freudenschein ist mir von Gott entstanden,
    Denn ein vollkommnes Gut,
    Des Heilands Leib und Blut,
    Ist zur Erquickung da.
    So muss uns ja
    Der überreiche Segen,
    Der uns von Ewigkeit bestimmt
Und unser Glaube zu sich nimmt,
    Zum Dank und Preis bewegen.
    5.
Unser Mund und Ton der Saiten
    Sollen dir
    Für und für
    Dank und Opfer zubereiten.
    Herz und Sinnen sind erhoben,
    Lebenslang
    Mit Gesang,
    Großer König, dich zu loben.
    6.
Wie bin ich doch so herzlich froh,
Dass mein Schatz ist das A und O,
    Der Anfang und das Ende;
Er wird mich doch zu seinem Preis
    Aufnehmen in das Paradeis,
Des klopf ich in die Hände.
    Amen!
    Amen!
Komm, du schöne Freudenkrone, bleib nicht lange,
    Deiner wart ich mit Verlangen.

    РУССКИЙ ПЕРЕВОД:
    0:11

It is for the style, too.Barroque music was complex, yet Bach was more advanced than his collegues like Mozart or Liszt in their period.

Having been born in 1685 and with this having been publicly performed for the first time in 1725, he would have been 40 at the time of this composition's first public performance. Bach died in 1750 at the age of 64.

      @Jalapablo 4 года назад +6

Not stealing. Composers quoted from their own prior compositions, and other composers' works all the time as was customary back then. That said, neither Buxtehude nor Bach wrote the cantus firmus for Morgenstern.

The initial choral is unbelievably beautiful and complex. The combination of solo violin and brass horns results in a joyous, surreal atmosphere appropriate for the Morgenstern. I could not believe this was Bach first work. In fact, it is not. It was composed in 1725 in Leipzig; thus, it is a mature piece. The BWV number one does not mean the first work composed; it means the first cantata registered in the BWV catalogue. BWV enumerates all cantatas first (1 to 198) and then the passions and so on. It is confusing but this was the criterium used. At any rate, a superb cantata and the conduction by Rilling as usual impeccable. Thanks for posting.

Some movements sound very operatic. Like if it were a Rossini opera. Or idk. Maybe its just me?
