This is brilliant. Period. In my many years of playing, I've never heard an instructor refer to getting the balance point of the club 'above the hands' either laterally or vertically.
Hi Chris-just wanna say I’ve watched this vid about 12x so far. This has actually helped my irons IMMENSELY. Love how you explain things in a common sense way. Thanks for the great content!
Great video Chris. I’ve played to a 3-4 handicap all year and really felt like this year was going to be the year I made it to a plus handicap. It didn’t happen and I think a lot of the reason was my backswing really made me inconsistent. After discovering that I was actually steeper in my downswing than in my backswing (probably a little over the top of my ideal plane. 18 degrees steeper using hudl technique app...quite a lot) I set out to try to fix this. The tee in the end of the grip drill has been a great way for me to get the club into a better position. I’m now seeing basically the opposite trend in my practice swings. I just need to find a way to move this onto the range and then onto the course. Thank you again for the great video! - Chris S.
Great tips Chris, I've just started playing. Had my second lesson this week and my coach got me doing this exact thing with my swing. Immediate results as I was able to hit the ball as far with a 3/4 swing as I had previously with a full swing. Brilliant channel will definitely check out more tips to see if I'm on the right path.
Another great video Chris. I have been watching your videos for some time now as I will only watch the guys with the traditional classic swings, & you have one 👍👍 yours is the 2nd video I have watched recently talking about setting the wrists early in the backswing. This is an area where I feel I have a fault, & have neglected to see until now. There was an old legendary Australian golf pro by the name of Ted Ball who tried teaching me this very thing in the mid 1970's, I had long forgotten it.......
Hi Chris no doubt your favourite question - would you do this for driver too? A lot of older teaching seems to advocate “wide” takeaways with little wrist set for driver
Thank you!! Great instruction and advice. Cannot wait to practice this. Could you provide what you’re backswing trigger is ? I.e. torso or right hip movement ?
Would this drill also ensure width in the backswing. The wrist set is something i struggle with , but this wrist hinge stiffens up the shoulders and restricts width.. is that a correct presumption or a consequence that we need to deal with by being aware of some other element in the take away /?
Thanks Chris, I have been trying to get a bigger upper body turn, I find setting the wrists too early promotes an incomplete rotation for me. Thoughts?
Tried it love it and not just on the range but also on the course !!! Noticed more solid and penetrating contact ! Just one question ! Is it the same with the driver and woods ???
Some time ago you did a video explaining how the backswing consisted of sidebend, rotation, forearm rotation and wrist hinge. Sean Foley once described three versions of wrist hinge, horizontal, diagonal and vertical. It seems to me that which hinge depends on when you rotate the forearm and if you hinge wrist first, it results in a steep downswing and if you rotate the forearm
Hey Chris, so from that pre set position , do you just rotate your body to move to the top of your back swing ie no further lifting of the arms? Many thanks for another fabulous video !
Hey Mark, in most backswings there would be some independent arm movement/swing, probably less with an iron v’s a driver so a rotation and a little arm swing would be ideal 👍
My last lesson involved doing this. I would take the club away low and my elbows would splay apart and I'd be in a right shit state at the top of the swing. I feel when I do this and set my wrists sooner, I feel more connected and also get more speed by the time the club gets down to the ball. I'd have a much more balanced finish too.
Interesting, is this something you would advise more with irons only? With driver width is always something that is taught, I get good width from a late wrist set.
I’d like to see all golfers create good with with all clubs, but personally for me I look at width as the arms and hands relative to the body rather than the club head. If you struggle to control the backswing and it feels loose then this would be a great move for all clubs, 👍
Chris I have heard some teachers talk about extending the back swing out to generate more power instead of wrist setting so early? Thoughts? I have Tiger woods do this, it almost seems like he wrist sets later in the upswing.
When you take the club away in this video and make an early wrist hinge, the toe of the club points straight up and seems open. Hoe do you then square the face on the way. down ? This seems different than some of your other teaching. Thanks
Hey Terry, width in the arms I’d say is important, but the club head doesn’t always need to be wide. This earlier wrist set isn’t a fit for everyone, but if the backswing does feel loose, out of control etc then this would be a great thing to work on 👍
Hey Adam, width is a good think and it can help lots create more speed, but width is really the hands relative to the body, it doesn’t make much difference if the club head is wide or narrow. I’m not saying this is a great fit for everyone as greats like Tiger and Rory set them wrists late, but if you feel you lack control then it can really help, just ensure you keep the width in your arms 👍
He does yes, but he also probably doesn’t struggle to control the golf club going back. I don’t believe there is 1 way to swing the club, but if anyone out there watching this has those feelings where the backswing feels uncontrolled, loose, etc this would be a great thing to work on. The ideas in this video are not how everyone should swing the club, more ideas on how to fix a problem, Rory doesn’t have that problem so there would be no need for him to change, hope that makes sense. 👍
@@ChrisRyanGolf Nicklaus also set a little later but like CR says, he was in control. Miller, I think was a fan of late set as well but Faldo is not. Control is the thing, I think. I am a big fan of CR.. thanks CR. My apologies if I've overstepped.
@@ChrisRyanGolf I totally get that but I've heard some coaches say that by concentrating on setting the wrists, it could take away the width from the backswing??? Another question. Do you pull up with the trail hand or push down with the lead hand when setting the wrists?
He does, as does Rory and both great swings and great players. At the beginning of the video I explained that this would be a great move for anyone who feels the lack control of the club, or it feels ‘loose’, if those things don’t apply then no real need to make the change. I’d say Tiger pretty much has the club under control, but there will be lots out there who lack that, this will help them 👍

That's what I needed. So obvious, but so easy to over look. Thanks for the explanation.
Had this video open in a tab for a week now, glad I finally watched it. Good stuff!
Thanks and glad it had some value 👍

This really helped my iron play, straightened up my driver a bit also. Thx Chris!

Excellent really well explained just what I wanted.,thank you.
This is a complete game changing drill. Improved my ball striking and handicap by 7 strokes just imbibing this
Very well explained, all seems very logical. Looking forward to experimenting with this at the range! Thanks

The 1970s called and would like their sweater back. Bold choice Chris! 😳
😂😂I’m telling the 1970’s that I’m keeping it! 👍
@@ChrisRyanGolf Too funny. Thanks for the great content.
Great video! I also find being very aware of the pace of my backswing helps keep it under control.
Absolutely Tim, too fast and things become hard to control too
recently subscribed and I am getting a lot out of the videos. Looking forward to improving. thanks
Anytime you’re in Dallas, drinks are on me. This tip saved me at least one iron lesson, maybe two. Finally, my stroke seems smooth.
Great video Chris and great tips and stay safe
Thanks Brian 👍

Love it! Glad it helped and yes can be applied to woods too
Chris what is a good drill for swinging down and through too inside and either pushing it right or flipping it left?
Does this work for woods and driver?

first, the downswing is a lot shallower. I tend try to hinge the wrist first but it doesn’t work on clubs longer than a 6 iron
Thanks Chris, another great lesson.
Thanks
Brilliant drills Chris 👍🏻
Was that the “Street Fighter” “PERFECT” in the intro? Class!
Yeah, I had to listen to it twice! Who would of thought !
Sounded like it😅

Do you shallow the club on the downswing ?
I thought hinging the wrists too early was a bad thing. This tip surprises me.
Is the greenskeeper in the background wearing shorts ? Holy 😱
Great content and explanation, as always !!!
Green keepers are hardcore! 😂😂
Thanks!
Superb Chris. 🙏
Thanks
Has the Street Fighter “Perfect” sound clip always been in the intro music or am I going crazy?
Brilliant
Great explanation and drills as always. Something immediately applicable on the range 👍🏌🏽♂️
Thanks Henrik 👍
This seems counterintuitive to the wide take away. I have this issue with wrist set which I believe takes me past parallel.
Chris I have heard some teachers talk about extending the back swing out to generate more power instead of wrist setting so early? Thoughts? I have Tiger woods do this, it almost seems like he wrist sets later in the upswing.
@Jerry Parker Doesn't sound like he was asking for a punk answer to his question.

I've always thought low and wide with a late wrist move to be right. I'm constantly told width is key.
Hey Terry, width in the arms I’d say is important, but the club head doesn’t always need to be wide. This earlier wrist set isn’t a fit for everyone, but if the backswing does feel loose, out of control etc then this would be a great thing to work on 👍

I had the same thought Terry.
Hi Chris. I was under the impression that keeping the club wide in the back swing is beneficial for generating speed, is that incorrect?

If i set my club early like this I feel like I end up with cupped wrist how do stop that feeling
I struggle with this so much, the club feels all over the place on the backswing
I over set my wrist or get far to wrists'y in my back swing the bag may not help me 😢
It won’t.... but at least you won’t hit it 👍😂
It is the same thing Faldo worked on in the 80:s
Very similar, pre set drill I believe was one if his go to drills
Tiger does not wrist set on his backswing. so who's better? Tiger brings his straight back
He does, as does Rory and both great swings and great players.
