I spent a lot of time getting rid of anxiety in my life. After successfully vanquishing the beast, someone recommend golf because its so relaxing, you're in nature for hours, and you get to hit little objects really hard and far. Seemed like a win-win. I'm happy to report that thanks to the driver, not only is the full extent of the anxiety back, but also riddled with guilt for all the divots, lawns, and objects I hit/create when using the club.
This week I watched your video and only had 3 days to incorporate into my swing routine. This past Saturday I played the final game of the club season, hit the fairways 100% with great distance. Had the lowest score for the club and won my overall category for the season. Thank you
Chris is a rock star. He takes something very complex, gives you a few check points and reminds you to be relaxed and fluid. If you do these things, many other complex movements occur naturally without thinking about them. This is genius and teaching golf at it's best. He should be teacher of the year.
Dear Chris Ryan. This video changed my driver game from 100% useless to almost perfect, I simply could not hit the ball at all (i'm a newbie, only 6 months in golf) and just the visual aid of thumbs and back of shoulder pointing towards the target in the backswing, was my EUREKA moment. Thank you so much for this. I would recommend this to any newbie trying to hit their driver.
I haven’t played in 5 years and just started playing again. I have watched tons of tip videos. This video has literally made me go from hitting 160 to around 210 yards. Thanks for the simple directions.
My relationship with the driver has always been a contentious one. Recently I’ve stopped trying to swing hard and fast. I’ve simply just started making solid contact with the ball. I started with a half swing and worked from there into a full swing. Seems like the easier I swing the better the result. I may have lost some distance off of my best drive, but consistency has greatly increased, and I’ll take that trade off any day.
Went to the range after seeing this video tip. Worked a dream, I can't believe how well I was hitting my driver after really struggling with all sorts of faults. Thanks Chris, you're a genius!!
I've struggled with my driver my entire life and this video was the most helpful video I've ever watched. Keep it simple so you only have to focus on a couple checkpoints. Thank you sir!
This club is torturing me, driving me to distraction and undermining my game. Your video instruction tips has giving me confidence I can overcome my troubles. I'm off to the course to implement your instruction.
Steve: Looking at your comment…couldn’t agree more…just started this game for about 6 months now, have broke 90 somewhere in October….have no major problem with driver since then until last 2 rounds, which after 9 holes my driver started to go low and left no matter I did…it was so frustating ….
Best driver (or any club) swing tip out there. The old Manuel De La Torre adage, "you can tell someone what to do but you cannot tell them how to do it" is perfectly demonstrated by Chris' video..
Hi Chris, me again. Spent a good deal of time practicing the tips and instructions in this video. When I first tried it, slowly, I immediately felt like I was swinging the club. I’d lost that feeling by spending a long time adjusting to half and three quarter swings. Sadly that made me strike at the ball instead of through it. So, here is the situation. Many videos telling me that I can swing less and hit the ball just as far. I’m going back to full swing tomorrow.
My first driver swing thought is concern for the houses on either side of the fairway. And my second swing thought is if the owner is home. Third... how fast can he run
The houses were built around the course, not the other way around. People that live on courses chose to live there and anything that comes with golf is something they just have to deal with.
Over the last 8 years it’s been a cycle of doing well with the driver, losing it, finding a fix, hitting it well, but then losing it, finding a new fix, and so on. It’s by far my worst club.
because its the driver you are looking to create distance, my tip swing slower and better, speeding up your swing will upset your timing leading to bad shots
Excellent comment. Had a round today and hit it terribly yet a few weeks ago I was looking forward to using it on most holes. Wish I had left it at home today.
my driver was pretty good last yr, but its trash this yr! started slicing the ball again, spinning it up, losing distance, etc. I go to the range and I pure it after a couple warm up shots, go play and its trash again. You're right, I've got to many swing thoughts/robotic movements, thanks for this video, this is definitely what I needed to see right now.
Best golf advice ever , keep it simple don’t over think and it’s more natural and relaxed. Thank you One thing I might add is takeaway at start Use the arms and shoulders Not wrists , left arm straight and close to chest so you get a nice wide takeaway
Hi Chris, at this very moment I feel like I’ve completely lost the driver swing. Maybe watched too many videos but I’m trying to do an easy swing and if I can get 200M then I will be in golf heaven. Now I’m revisiting your site and will try to follow your basic driver setup and delivery. Keep up the great work. Love your presentation style
The driver is my most inconsistent club. I have a high club head speed. Usually, it's around 125. When I hit it good I can carry over 300 yards. But it's always a fade. I believe I tend to get hung up with my arms behind me. These videos have really enlightened me to how to swing more consistently.
I like this !!! I have been in this situation for the past 2/3 weeks with my driver and too many swing thoughts over the ball and have no idea where the ball will go ( left or right ) I like what you said to feel the smooth swing thought instead of mechanics !! It is a no moment for me and my game even with my mid to long irons !! it us really not good and getting really frustrated and times very 🤬🤬🤬! So this morning going to the practice range and only want work on alignments grip and of course this video ?
Very clever, subtle. The shoulder thing, full turn, the thumb thing, club face unlikely to be open at top, the shoulder thing, moving forward as you swing as well as rotating and the club on the neck, forces the swing to be a bit higher rather than wrapping low and hooking. When I tried this in the back yard the club kept bumping into left shoulder so I can see a problem there. Thanks can’t wait to get this on the range as my swing has become a collection of 100 thoughts as I battle with this club after hitting a 3 wood off the tee for the first five years of my golf career.
Gained a lot of confidence in my driver this year. (thanks to some of your videos). Picked my line and swung away. No need for a 3W or driving iron. Felt I could hit my line regardless of how tight the fairway was. Only had to change if I was afraid of driving through the fairway. The season in NY is close to over, so I'll use this to practice over the Winter.
8 MONTHS in... and I feel like my Drive is getting better. I still slice from time to time, but at least I know what I'm doing wrong. No more frustration! Thank you for simplifying things here. You always help me get back to the important things that work!
Thanks, I'm a big guy and a lot of times super strong grip causing me to hit ball to the left. Very closed Club face I believe. Feeling Relaxed allows the rotation of my body. Maybe that's why I swing better after a drink or 2 🤣🤣Thanks I'll keep you posted 👍🏿😁🏌🏿
Your right. The less things your thinking about the better. Just take a full swing. At set up do you mind setting up a few inches before the ball to promote hitting up on the ball ?
Ryan, I like to try different instructors on You Tube to get a variety of suggestions. I have been watching your lessons for several years. I always find simple, easy to incorporate and very helpful suggestions. I have returned to this lesson on reducing swing thoughts on the driver several times. I’m sure I will again. Many thanks.
After some lessons with a local pro, my irons have greatly improved. Still a lot of work to do but I am happy with my irons now. My driver has always been inconsistent with a tremendous tendency to slice my tee shots. I have tried many tips I watched on RUclips but results have been mixed. I start hitting longer and reducing my slices, but then, for no apparent reason I lose control of my drives e.g., hitting the ground first, muffing the shot, or just really poor directional control. So, in summary, my driver is absolutely the club that limits my enjoyment of the game.
Ok, so I've watched thousands of videos on how to swing a driver (specifically to get rid of a slice) and it has got me nowhere. I've watched numerous different youtubers with each having a different method. Your channel seems to be the best at making change for me. Sometimes, I'll see some good shots for a few holes and then that swing thought stops working and I'm left searching for a new thought. Very frustrating and frankly ruins the game for me. After much frustration, I started private lessons with a PGA coach. We have done 4 or 5 lessons. He only really wants to take me through iron shots though, and he is really happy with them. In our last lesson he watched me hit a few driver shots because I begged him. None of these shots looked anything like my usual shapes. They were all pulls that hardly left the ground. I always hit a massive slice. So I'm starting to consider leaving the driver out of the bag altogether. Maybe I should just look for a 1 iron. That is, stick to the one type of club that I'm being coached on and the one kind that I can hit. Currently, I feel like I am playing football with my shoelaces tied together. It's just not fun and defeats the concept of leisure time. What do you think?
ok, so I watched this again and went and played 9 holes (with my driver). I really love the focus on the back to the target check point. The other thing I have found is that, my unwinds itself without me trying to unwind it. If I just concentrate on extending my arms and club down to the ball, the back unwinds. I also found that flexing my frnt knee a little at address makes the chest behind the ball feel more natural.
Chris. Thanks for your easy to understand full driver swing. I think this is the one I watched. I’m 62 years old but in excellent shape. I’ve wanted to go back to my full swing after my golf pros instruction to do a half swing which only 50 percent of the time worked to my advantage. I practiced your full swing and hit probably 280 all the way to the back of our range where the half swing would get 230 at the most. And I’m a novice golfer of 5 years.
Brilliant imagery of an arrow on trail shoulder to point at target for the backswing. Seems to work wonders for me.Thank you. It's what I needed exactly to clear my head of swing thoughts and have an image in mind (mind's eye) that captures it all.Worth many hours of lessons and still motion positions in just one image. Genius! Everything about the backswing seems to fall in place naturally with this one image. Why haven't I heard of this before?
all my very best shots come from a feeling of swinging in slow motion, I give myself time to get in the right position and pull the club through, great video Chris top man
This is perfect for me Chris, just bought the radspeed and having to hit the reset button with driver! Terrible first round with it, old driver was offset, so very different feeling 😔 but this will certainly help 👍👌
Hi Chris, I am revisiting this video again. Funny, I was having good drives when I first starting to use the tip in this video... However, I lost it again recently and starting to slice the ball again... frustrating. Thanks again for the video.
I switched to a 48 inch Driver about a year ago & I haven't sliced the ball since. I love my driver & my Putter but I hate all of those medal things in between them two clubs. I still shoot in the 90's because I can't hit an iron, but I am still practicing with those metal things so hopefully one day it will click for me.
I have just started golf ( 6 weeks ) and can honestly say as a grown man I great this club, nothing feels right when I start my swing from start to finish, irons I'm doing ok on.
Chris, loved the video and can relate to all the mind games that you have said people struggle with when using the driver. I've struggled with the driver for a long time now and love the simplicity of your video however I would like to ask a question if I may. As I'm now in my 60s would it be possible to show me and other older golfers some check points in the swing when using the driver when you are not so supple and not so flexible?
The beauty of this game is that you can play very well if you are super super smart .. Dechambeau ..CR .. Mike Austin .. or super super dumb DJ .. etc .. me :-) With no real effort I hit my drives 235 240yds .. using Cr methods with some Mike Austin mixed in 260 to 300 (if the wind is howling in the right direction) .. I'm still shooting 9 out of 10 scores in the 70's.. Thanks CR. Winter is here .. and I'm at the practice range .. heaters ..music .. kids laughing in the background 3 days a week this winter .. I hope.
I am terrible with the driver. Have been trying to get better results with little success. I am a chronic slicer and now also a chronic skyer of the ball. The crown of my driver is covered with scrapes. I've seen lots of you tube tips and had lessons, but can't fix it. It is taking the fun out of the game for me.
Chris Thank you so much I took this single video and it's made a huge difference in my game . I now only need to focus on one or two things rather than several. Amazing
Absolutely needed this video! I find myself sometimes worrying about impact position during the swing so I find myself tensing up, hanging back and not following through and finishing. Great job as always!
Hi Chris, great video, but for me, it's still your lesson on having the driver just ahead of my centre, it gives me a great visual thought, will try your trail shoulder thought when I get to range today, George 👍
I look at the driver as the key to scoring low. It works best when I have a full and relaxed swing which I think is the idea you are making in this video.
Concerning the natural swing could you discuss the breathing……that is do you hold your breath or do you take a breath During the take away and then exhale during the follow-through?
Driver, 56* wedge and putter are my 3 strongest, easiest to hit, most natural feeling clubs atm. If I could find a course where I only needed those clubs, or if I could hit the driver like Bryson, golf would be easy :)
I absolutely love my driver but I am very inconsistent with it but I don't no why great tips will try them on thurs when I play love the one about resting it on my neck hope that will helps me cheers
Hey Christian, I think that’s the most common response that people are just inconsistent, one day it can be great and the next not so good, but hope these tips help 👍
Thanks for these excellent videos. This one was not as useful as others because I did not understand the orientation of the “arrow” on your right shoulder. An illustration could have helped.
You have a great swing and it appears you have very little "shallowing" , almost same plane up and down. Maybe you could talk about this sometime and explain how we have options and what you do differently than some others. Love your videos.
My driver used to be my most consistent club, I had a slight heel-side miss that resulted in a super consistent fade off the tee but typically maxed out at 250 yards. Adjusted the swing to get more speed/distance and now I have an awful toe miss that ends up with a hook when I get out of sync. When I catch one out of the middle it flies, just not nearly as consistent & confidence has dropped
Yes this is me, i used to crush my drives but anymore I think too much and have become very robotic as he said, too much "arms" and lost alot of distance. I will certainly try these tips...tomorrow when I'm playing a round.
Your ideology (in this and other vids)has helped me move my Driver slice into closer, findable misses left. Dare say I am developing a penetrating draw that rolls for yards. Great shot shape for our courses here in NE FL. Thanks for trimming off the fat. I owe your a beer....or 12.
Would these tips apply to the iron swing as well? Back right shoulder pointing at the target (for a right hander), trail shoulder pointing at the target to finish?
It's very much a love/hate relationship, with my driver. I'm still trying to find my swing groove, after not having played for over a year, due to a shoulder injury. The irons are looking good, and flying straight, but I never know which direction the driver is going to go. If I can figure out how to keep in the short grass, I could shoot upper 70's/low 80's everytime.
Its usually my best club, but I need it to get better. I have been able to manipulate my slice, but I'd rather be able to swing it straight and not think about it so much.
You must be psychic. The past couple months I've been working on a more upright backswing because I was tired of people saying I have a flat swing. I became less consistent, I felt like Kevin na(frozen over the ball), and felt very mechanical. Today while playing I struggled the first 5 or 6 holes. I decided to scrap everything I was working on and just swing the club with no thoughts. Dropped 7 shots on the back. Swing your swing
@@ChrisRyanGolf I have been hitting my driver pants for months, I'm taking barely making contact. Tried these feelings and was smashing it, hit 155mph+ whereas I've never gone over 150mph before. Not everything was dead straight, but all were in play.
My thought initially when I started playing was "Am I going to hit the ball in the center of the club", now it has changed to "where is my left hand (right hand golfer) pointing in my back swing". It is a lot better with the latter but its not consistent as I still slice at times

Your right. The less things your thinking about the better. Just take a full swing. At set up do you mind setting up a few inches before the ball to promote hitting up on the ball ?
Chris
This tip is so simple and amazing!
Took it to the range with both driver and irons. Great consistency improvement on both.
Thanks!!
Great to hear Craig 👍
Great simple swing tips! Thumbs up Chris! Wish more PGA professionals could keep it this simple and focus on the move instead of positions!
Thanks Hakan
Really struggling with driver all year. Currently using 2iron off the tee, will definitely give this a try 👍🏽

So simple , I ve saved the video and tomorrow night at the range I’ll watch it again and hopefully replicate it, big thank you
This is the best driver instructional video I’ve ever seen.
Thanks Lucas
“Swing thoughts” simple instructions with great terminology, very relatable content.
Love your instructions, so clear, concise and most importantly simple.
Thanks Steve appreciate it
Superb advice, those reference points are sometimes all you need to then work on the rest. Great stuff
Thanks Chris
Hi Chris, I am revisiting this video again. Funny, I was having good drives when I first starting to use the tip in this video... However, I lost it again recently and starting to slice the ball again... frustrating. Thanks again for the video.
Haven't got to test this out yet..but damn. Makes a lot of sense.
I have gotten to try and steer the driver thru impact instead of releasing the swing. Thanks for the tip.

This is the awesomest swing thought ever. I'm forever anxious with the driver and I'm going to try it tomorrow morning. Have a game. Will let you know
Yeah let me know how it goes, play well 👍

I hope.
So simplevswing back and swing through. Will try tomorrow .
Your best video
I am terrible with the driver. Have been trying to get better results with little success. I am a chronic slicer and now also a chronic skyer of the ball. The crown of my driver is covered with scrapes. I've seen lots of you tube tips and had lessons, but can't fix it. It is taking the fun out of the game for me.
Chris Thank you so much I took this single video and it's made a huge difference in my game . I now only need to focus on one or two things rather than several. Amazing
Love the trail shoulder bit...my nemesis!
Hope it helps Martin
Good stuff Chris. Very simple. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Kenney
Thanks definitely going to try this. My driver is the only club I really dont know I am going to get
Very interesting.
Absolutely needed this video! I find myself sometimes worrying about impact position during the swing so I find myself tensing up, hanging back and not following through and finishing. Great job as always!
Thanks Jim and hope it helps
Hi Chris, great video, but for me, it's still your lesson on having the driver just ahead of my centre, it gives me a great visual thought, will try your trail shoulder thought when I get to range today, George 👍
Thank you Chris. This was just what I needed to hear and ist worked great for me today with driver and 5 wood.
Great to hear Maria
I look at the driver as the key to scoring low. It works best when I have a full and relaxed swing which I think is the idea you are making in this video.
I think that’s true for a lot of golfers out there Charles, if the driver works well it’s far easier to score 👍
Cant wait to give this a try when golf courses reopen next week. Cheers Chris 👍👍
Hope it helps
Concerning the natural swing could you discuss the breathing……that is do you hold your breath or do you take a breath During the take away and then exhale during the follow-through?
great video Chris keep up the awesome work ....as of right now the driver and i are not on good terms but work on my game as always
Thanks Michael and hope things improve with the big stick 👍
Thanks for this. I feel nervous with Driver in hand on the course
Driver, 56* wedge and putter are my 3 strongest, easiest to hit, most natural feeling clubs atm. If I could find a course where I only needed those clubs, or if I could hit the driver like Bryson, golf would be easy :)
I love your channel. Great video and really helpful 😁
Thanks appreciate it
I absolutely love my driver but I am very inconsistent with it but I don't no why great tips will try them on thurs when I play love the one about resting it on my neck hope that will helps me cheers
Exelent THX
Hope it helps, just free it up and ‘swing the club’
@@ChrisRyanGolf it did help, I was striking the ball a lot better, not always straight but making good contact.
Your ideology (in this and other vids)has helped me move my Driver slice into closer, findable misses left. Dare say I am developing a penetrating draw that rolls for yards. Great shot shape for our courses here in NE FL. Thanks for trimming off the fat. I owe your a beer....or 12.
Love it! Great to hear and glad the videos are helping 👍
If I can figure out how to keep in the short grass, I could shoot upper 70's/low 80's everytime.
driver, the bane of my golf existence.
Its usually my best club, but I need it to get better. I have been able to manipulate my slice, but I'd rather be able to swing it straight and not think about it so much.
I need helllpppp with my driver, you helped with my irons.... fingers crossed.
I’ll try it today Chris
Hope it helps 👍
You must be psychic. The past couple months I've been working on a more upright backswing because I was tired of people saying I have a flat swing. I became less consistent, I felt like Kevin na(frozen over the ball), and felt very mechanical. Today while playing I struggled the first 5 or 6 holes. I decided to scrap everything I was working on and just swing the club with no thoughts. Dropped 7 shots on the back. Swing your swing
I have a really up and down relationship with my driver good first few holes terrible by the end of the round
Chris, brilliant thoughts as ever. I've had these feelings before and hit it fantastically. Can't wait to get to the range and give it a whack
Hope it helps
@@ChrisRyanGolf I have been hitting my driver pants for months, I'm taking barely making contact. Tried these feelings and was smashing it, hit 155mph+ whereas I've never gone over 150mph before. Not everything was dead straight, but all were in play.
Would it be the same check point for iron? Like the thumbs pointing at the target ?
My thought initially when I started playing was "Am I going to hit the ball in the center of the club", now it has changed to "where is my left hand (right hand golfer) pointing in my back swing". It is a lot better with the latter but its not consistent as I still slice at times
