Rescuing a pregnant flying-fox stuck on a balcony: this is Yoko

  • Yoko is an adult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was trapped on a tiny balcony. She's pregnant, and a little unhappy about being caught and caged.
In care I sedated her a little so she stopped stressing out and if possible, could hang onto her baby till it was actually due.
When I got her home I thought she was about to pop and she seemed very bulgy round her girly bits.
However, once she settled down she apparently took my advice and crossed her legs and held baby in to cook it a little further.
On day 4 she is still pregnant and is just hanging around and stuffing her face and incubating baby to term.
    YAY. I like happy outcomes.

Similarly, I was homeless and hopeless from Oct. '17 till late July '29. But by Jan. '20 I was employed and heading back to *usual* (which is still a skewed ideal, but still...). So don't think too different from small to large when viewing things around you. Sometimes, all it takes is a little output. Other times it might just keep taking all you give. Be observant at all times, from a point of giving and of taking. People like me will thank you more than you can imagine.

The don't understand English, but they do understand tone of voice, and predictability and consistency; when I first rescue them I speak to them in reassuring tones, and match to my actions with gentle, slow and predicable movements. This lets them associate my actions with my tone of voice and not being hurt, and feeling a little better, and being fed.

"OMG they're not hurting me" "OMG I feel so much better" "OMG I'm warm, safe and fed!" "OMG I gotta tell all my friends about this hotel!"
Shows how intelligent bats are - although stressed and wary, they realize fairly quickly that the rescue is not an attack. Giving/getting food is one of, if not the, most basic and universal way to give/get comfort and promote trust.

He learned the whistle from another of my pair's chicks who was also not quite normal. Both Mini and my bird LIcketty Split have died since, but I love the ringtone because it reminds meet how happy he always was. @@Megabattie that's awesome. I always had some rescue pets in my life and I always talk to them, too (even to the deaf ones😅).
Can I ask you something? My cat brought me a dead bat last week. It was a mouse sized one. He can't jump, so he isn't able to leave our really small garden. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again? I felt so bad for the poor thing.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  2 года назад +1

@@KrisThroughGlass keep your cat in at night. If you do, then the cat has found a bat on the ground and there is nothing you can do to prevent this.

@@Megabattie thank you! I'm afraid this isn't an option, though. I got him from a shelter 3 years ago when he was already at least 10 years old and was deeply traumatized. He's doing much better, but still hides during daylight. Not eating, going to the toilet etc. Nights are the only time he seems to feel safe.
I'm also really happy that we got rid of a very serious mice infestation thanks to him (poison was never an option for me).
For now I'll hope that he learned from the experience that he doesn't like the taste of bat (he eats mice completely).
Soon it's time for hibernation (I'm from Germany). Maybe he feels safe enough to get active during the day until next spring. Then I'll reconsider keeping him inside during the night.
Thank you again for the advice!

      Thanks Feeber.
      Welcome to Megabattie.
I put information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first.
I also put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
If you want to find out further videos of a specific bat - search in the YT search bar for Megabattie/name of bat.
