Poor Mrs. Mimsy Very Pregnant! She was fighting tooth and nail to protect herself and her baby. I love the moment when she is drinking juice and finally lets her eyelids droop knowing they must be safe. I'm glad that she and the bubby girl are doing well. Great rescue, Meg.

As beautiful as they are, I can't help but feel a little intimidated by the adults when they're freaking out. You are very brave.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  5 лет назад +81

Ah well, when I first started I was scared of the big boys and when they screamed and bigwingsed me I was duly intimidated, as they intended. Now I just go - yeah you're fearsomely scary and I respect you for that but I'm bigger and scarier and I'm not the faintest bit intimidated by you.
It was a matter of time and patience and learning to read the bat and learning handling skills.
My mentor just said - be calm. Take a breath. Don't let the members of public's expectations force you into catching the bat when you're not ready. Wait for the right moment and then just do it. Be calm, take a deep breath...

I have become addicted to these bat episodes. I've always been inrerested in them and 65 years ago even caught one in Austin and gave it to my girlfriend in Dallas, not realizing the danger.
But these beautiful foxbats are in a separate league. I especially enjoy Walter and his antics. Being quite elderly myself I identify with him. Meg is a special personn in many ways. Very kind, and so witty. I read that, with few natural enemies, bats have been known to live as long as 40 years.

      Hi Tex. Welcome to Megabattie.
I put information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first.
I also put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
If you want to find out further videos of a specific bat - search in the YT search bar for Megabattie/name of bat.

      Just a couple of points:
These bats are not fox bats nor foxbats. The term is either a flying-fox (hyphenated) or a bat or a fruit bat, but not a combination of the terms. US TV presenters seem to be the origin of the term fox bat.
All flying-foxes are bats; not all bats or all fruit bats are flying-foxes. Bat is an umbrella term encompassing all the bats and they are classified under that overall umbrella into various other groupings.
It used to be loosely speaking that microbats echolocated, and megabats didn't - but the taxonomy is changing now and the bats are being classified according to DNA.
I am actually quite fussy about pulling people up on my channel for referring to these adorable little ones as foxes or fox bats, because if I leave it unchallenged, the other viewers think it's correct.
I now have the biggest bat YT channel in the world so I don't need to influence people into the incorrect terminology by default, or by lack of curation and attention on my channel.
2; True, flying-foxes have relatively speaking few predators - but they don't have long lives. The wild is a really tough place.
Sea Eagles and various other raptors (grey goshawks) will hang around on the outskirts of colonies picking off stragglers and slow or injured bats.
Pythons are a big predator for the flying-foxes. They just slither in at night and quietly squeeze up the nearest sleeping body and crush and swallow and digest.
Crocodiles in the Far North of Australia are also predators. The bats bellydip in the creek or waterways at dusk, to get water on their fur so they can lick it off and get a drink. The crocs lie in wait and try to grab the bats who skim randomly in seemingly crowded or bare patches of water. They often get lucky (the crocs).
In captivity, Walter is an old dude who is about 28 years old. He'd have been dead around 15 years if he'd had a life in the wild.
I'd consider Man a bigger predator on the bats with habitat loss and development than the natural predators who quietly cull the colony of the old and the crippled and keep natural life balanced..

Thanks goodness the security guards found her and even when she escaped the box they put a milk crate over her so those Currawongs couldn't attack her as that would have been fatal. I suppose she was super terrified as she had no way of escaping them pecking through the gaps in the milk crate so she was even more terrified when you came along. I don't think I've heard a batty making such terrified sounds on any of your videos I've watched so far, they were almost human in there sound almost as if I could hear her saying/feeling this was the end, especially the look in her eyes😢... I could sense in the tone of your voice during the rescue that you were very very worried/stressed that with her amount of terror she may have lost her baby... Thank goodness she didn't and seeing her in the video with Sarah and Princess, things went okay. YAY!!!! for Mimsy and her little girl🦇❤️

They’re so terrified during reacue, but I love “the juice moment” which really calms them down. I saw the other video of Mimsy and Whipple and I’m so happy for her! A double happy ending...Mimsy wasn’t injured to where she’d have be euthanized and she held on and gave birth to a beautiful little girl!

They all do that if they can - they like being in control of not falling, so until they trust you to hold them and not let them fall, they like to have their feet hooked into something, anything.
