Rescuing a flying-fox up a tree: this is Goorlie

  • Goorlie is a subadult male Black Flying-Fox who was hanging out in some backyard trees for 24 hours. I visited this place only a few days previously with another Black Flying-Fox rescue in the same location. What are the odds of 2 subadult Black Flying-Foxes in the same tree in the same backyard within 72 hours of each other, in a place I've never rescued before?
    Such a handsome fellow he is too, with beautiful fur, and mickey mouse ears, but a bit of a spaced out look on his face indicating he's hit his head sometime before he ended up in that tree.
    Blacks are subject to frostbite and fungal infections which burn the tips of their ears and destroy the tissue.
    Baby season is approaching here, and my options for finding carers for adult bats is limited locally. Any rescue I do, I can keep until their wanting to hang, but I can't provide them company or further care once they stage out of my incubator.
    Usually I sort the bat out before I move them along (vet care, hydration and whatever else it needs); I need to get an x-ray to see why this young guy couldn't or didn't fly when I caught him.
    I'll arrange for his collarbones to be imaged so I can be happier moving him along to a carer who has limited vet access and/or limited time.
    This year we are really short on carers for adults locally, and the Princess has had another human wingless pup, which apparently puts her out of action for this season. My normal go-to person is ill; my personal availability is curtailed by high maintenance parental issues, and baby season has started.
    I called this young man Goorlie (from Kalgoorlie St); the town of Kalgoorlie built its reputation on the largest open cut Gold mine in Australia for many years.
    Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
    tolgabathospit...
    Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
    If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
    IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
    The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
    Here’s Jenny’s email.

    I must say Mr. Goorlie is a handsome guy, but he looks very spaced out…still trying every chance at escape, but without much real expectation of success. He sure wanted that juice, that was a great reaction, even if he did wear a good bit of it.
    Very strange to have two in a spot new to you like that, and I hope he is not damaged in his flight capability. He has the shortest ears I’ve seen on one, whether it was frost or fungus, they are like little teddy bear ears.
    It’s a rough time to be short carers, and I hope things don’t get too out of hand for you. Hoping this young man becomes a survivor, and is able to get back out there without any trouble.✨🖤🇨🇦

      Hi Mary
      Are you new to my channel?
      Welcome to Megabattie,
      I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
      There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
      You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
      There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

      I believe Segue (one of Mandi’s) is a mixed breed, he has some interesting differences unique to him, and is very cute. I don’t know if the Little Reds would work because they have a different breeding season.🖤🇨🇦

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  10 месяцев назад +5

      There are occasional hybrids; I don't know if the hybrids are fertile though. In care you can watch their behaviour. If a hybrid gave birth you could say that she's fertile, but if the hybrid is male, unless one of the girls gives birth to a baby who is obviously from the hybrid (features of 2 species), then it's hard to tell if the hybrids are inter fertile with their progenitor species.
      I don't think anything will hybridise with the Little Reds - they're a lot smaller than the Greys, Blacks and Speccies and breed out of season to the other larger species.

      The males get smelly , especially in breeding season.

      @Megabattie  10 месяцев назад +5

      The Grey boys have a specific odour but I can't describe it; it's fairly bitter but I don't find it particularly offensive (most people do)
      The girls are less stinky, and the babies (the Grey babies) smell sweet and like vanilla, baby powder and pink musk candy.
      Blacks and Greys and Speccies and Little Reds all smell different. People say the Little Reds smell like curry; I think Blacks smell like burnt fruit salad (not that I've ever burnt fruit salad, but they smell fruity like fruit salad with an acrid burnt overlay of aroma). Speccies have their own smell and I can't describe it.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  10 месяцев назад +4

      LOL, Paul.
      The boys stinkify themselves up by peeing on themselves (do human males do that except by accident?) then rubbing it all in so they're noice and aromatic and shiny for the girls.

    What’s the difference between a flying fox and a bat?

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  2 месяца назад

      Flying-foxes are both bats AND flying-foxes.
      All flying-foxes are bats; not all bats are flying-foxes.
      A flying-fox is a specific kind of fruit bat.
      Bat is an umbrella term for various bats, like dog is general term for all species of dogs.
