    I've experimented with HDR, and for smaller creators who simply can't afford to drop thousands of $ for the additional hardware (HDR monitor, decklink) it is very very hard to consistently/efficiently produce HDR content at the moment. The only way for us to reference our grades right now is to upload short clips onto RUclips and watch it on a HDR TV/phone and make "guesstimates" of what changes are needed. Rinse and repeat, trial and error. This is super impractical as even a short 30 second clip of 4K HDR can take up to 3 days for RUclips to process.
    The moment HDR monitors can be afforded by mainstream consumers is when the HDR content space will really kick off.
    TLDR: A proper HDR workflow only possible if you've got money to splash. If you're a smaller creator on a low/medium budget, producing good HDR content is impractical at the moment.

    I rectify the previous message where I could not view HDR ... after spending many hours I DO get to see in 4K HDR! Thanks a lot. From what I understand, RUclips processes SD and HD quickly, but HDR takes longer. So I recommend you follow the steps Jason indicates and it works perfectly. Thank you, thank you and thank you very much friend.

    This is a really good video, Jason. I've subscribed. By the way, you can get away without a decklink card or the BlackmagicUltra 4K mini device you mention. If you have Thunderbolt 3 and in Resolve if you go to workspace/Video Clean Feed and then select your ASUS monitor, it will feed directly from Resolve to the monitor. For people just experimenting in HDR...this provides an inexpensive solution to start looking at shots. I do own the ASUS ProArt monitor and love it.

    Pretty sure you can skip the expensive Blackmagic device if you own a newer Mac. You just need a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector that supports 4K and HDR (Belkin makes one and it’s only $50). The newer macs will output 4K HDR to an HDR monitor. It works perfectly with FCPX.

    • @eravedesigns
      @eravedesigns 2 года назад +1

      The BM is also so you can load an accurate correction LUT to the monitor that bypasses the GPU. It’s necessary for any accurate color grading workflow.

    • @chosenideahandle
      @chosenideahandle 2 года назад

      @@eravedesigns they built the Apple Pro Display XDR for people editing HDR using the Radeon Pro Vega II Duo. Of course you need a Mac Pro.

    • @eravedesigns
      @eravedesigns 2 года назад +1

      @@chosenideahandle any reliable color grading workflow does not rely on video sent out by a GPU. It’s why color grading professionals use highly accurate monitors plugged into a deck link or similar and then they hardware calibrate the monitors inside the monitors software and not the operating system. The deck link sends a feed with no OS or GPU impact. This is the way.

I shoot mostly HLG/DLog in Mavic 3 and Sony A7IV for output to RUclips in HDR. I have figured how to work around the storage limitations of iOS and luma fusion with good success. Hey, glad you mentioned VIRTUAL JAPAN's channel cause i would like to ask you something about his footage. I know he records with a Sony A7S3 and isuppose he uses other picture profile than HLG for his HDR videos, right? Do you know what profile he uses, S Log3 or maybe externally recording in ProRes raw?
    Also how do you think he focuses his footage? Sets his lense to infinite focus? All of his footage is in focus, be it very close when someone passes by or be it far away in the background, he dosent uses auto focus right? But if he uses infinite that would not make very close objects/faces to be out of focus? And what about aperture in his night videos? He says in the description that he uses a Sony 20mm F1.8 G lense, do you think he uses 1.8 aperture? His night videos are so clear, no noise can be seen!! Does he denoise the image or can the Sony A7S3 with a good lense to record at night without any noose?
    Thanks in advance for your info and time!

      @@t.Mooney to be honest im not sure, i only know thats the issue because when i pull in HLG/HDR footage into FCPX without converting it to rec 709 it looks exactly how you described

    Watching this on Chrome on a MacBook, everything is blown out, what was surprising was that the video's white was actually brighter than the white youtube background itself!
    Great video though!

    so couldn’t you just use a LG 4k/8kHDR television to color instead of buying the monitor? that thang is pricey!

    why cannot you just use a tv as monitor?

      Right? I have Pixel 4 that I didn't think is an HDR display but to my surprise, the HDR kicked in!

    So basically $4K just in monitor and recorder...
    On top of a capable machine.
    I wanted to get into the HDR world but it's too expensive.

    Funny that you grade on a monitor where most people who consume I would only watch it on a hdr400, 600 ips monitor or worse phone. Lol 😆

      Right? 😂 But the purpose of having a higher end monitor is to make sure you have all your grounds covered.

    I'm seeing a lot of skipped frames in your B-roll. Was this shot at 24fps with a 60pfs shutter speed? Also, the image is overall quite bright to my eyes and doesn't seem natural. The untreated footage that you showed at the start looks better IMHO.
    Does anyone else feel the same? I shoot with Panasonic micro 4\3rds cameras at 30fps with a 60fps shutter speed in HGL HDR 10 bit @150Mbps and barely need to adjust the footage aside from tightening dark and light levels, so I may be extremely biased to what I know from Panasonic (and at a basic level, Sony's camera systems).

    Why would a camera record HDR when RAW and LOG are already far beyond what displays can display. Its purely a consumer electronics marketing hype play and finishing/export workflow. The screen is the only difference. The screen can just scale the dynamic range those small values and you have HDR. If it was a HUGE nit difference in dynamic range, (which I wish it was, but it is not), it is plausible you could see banding or a mismapping of gamma ratios if the file being played is not one with enough bit depth/ color sampling or graded in HDR. As far as cameras that “shoot HDR”. Total marketing bullshit.

    jesus christe, i saw better exposure levels and coloring in 8 bit... and i mean 8bit NES graphic...
    What the hell just happend? without HDR Your video is just a white blob, and with HDR is over exposure as f!

    WHY do people STILL shoot in 24 fps and THEN use it for ONLINE content that is predominantly displayed on 60hz monitors. 24 is a TERI-BAD frame rate for the era of online content. Just a grand case of "follow the leader". sad.
