As a colourist I find my self more of a therapist between the director, the producer and the DP. As long as everybody walks out of the room happy I’ve done my job. I’ll fix the noise in the shadows and roll off the highlights when they’re gone...
Well, that would be different on a case by case basis but if I have the raw source I would start by checking exposure settings or redoing the first light to match the rest of the scene. That takes care of most problems and is also really tedious so I don’t want to do that during client time. If the footage is in a not ideal format (4:2:0 8 bit junk...) or was just shot underexposed I’ll nudge up the NR, unlink the chroma if it’s really colour noise and abuse the temporal NR cause that thing is brilliant. Also doing luma keys if I want to keep details in areas and matching back in a bit of grain. ...but y’know, whatever works
@@ChrisdeCastro Yeah that's what I guessed, thanks for the insight. 8-bit is by far the best footage I can work with (camera wise), so best I can go with will still be with NeatVideo NR. Even though I'm a working music composer and have no idea about color corection and found myself on this channel by accident, the way he describes his process is inspiring and could be easilly adopted in my field. Which is focusing on a story and emotion rather than technicalities. The amount of time I wasted worrying about my computer, software and gear often makes me forget what is the thing I do, or should do, in my job - co-create a story and use all the electronics as tools, nothing more than tools.
Hey Armando! I want to thank you for this video. It was extremely informative and helpful to hear just a bit of Shane's color wisdom. I know sometimes RUclips and many viewers don't like longer form videos like this. However, I for one greatly appreciate the opportunity to do more of a deep dive into a subject. Thanks again! Gus
I think this was a very informative colorist video. One of the best I’ve seen on RUclips thus far, everything else has been amateur hour and cutting corners, this was simple, honest, and nothing complicated from a pro within a short amount of time, obviously there’s more to it to color grading but I would prefer videos like this other than a RUclipsr wasting my time and tryin to sell me their luts. As a person learning how to color grade.. That is the best video I have watched, period. Thanks Armando, great interview and Shane was amazing. You could have done 3 hrs and I would still be watching. Thanks
thanks pat.. super kind of you to say.
Thank you for this interview! We need more of Shane. He has definitely much more to tell. Great learning.
Love seeing and hearing his thought process!
I love this type of video. So many youtubers, even the big names like Peter McKinnon and Matti Haapoja just kind of gloss over the basics of the color grading process. This offers a better insight into the process. Also, another great channel more specific to color grading that offers great color grading and color correcting tips is "color grading central". Thanks for sharing Armando.
If people watch them and they entertain they get paid. It's as deep as that.
@@rsmith02 I get it. I do. I actually really like both Peter McKinnon and Matti Haapoja. Love their content. There is a space for everyone on RUclips.
They aren’t colorists at Dolby and neither is Armando.
What you did was just so amazing! He's so knowledgable and I'd like to express my gratefulness to you on bringing this into my Covid life!! Totally love it!!! A thousand likes & subscribed!!!
Thank you for sharing this Armando! It was absolutely what I’ve needed to hear for years.
Sometimes guys like this can seem a little off putting at first, because they seem arrogant... but my goodness I appreciate this dudes knowledge and by the end of the video I appreciated him even more. Great video Armando.
Thank you kindly Two One Se7en, very nice of you to say.
Yes sir. All the respect in the world. 🙏
He doesn't seem arrogant at all to me.
Over a year later and I’m back to watch this again. So much great insight and thought into WHY we want our images to look the way that they do. I came for knowledge and left with wisdom.
I need more of this guys knowledge!
Even though it’s clear that Armando did not enjoy this interview, the premise of the content is priceless. We need to see more videos like this. Thanks for the video Armando 👍
I appreciate you taking the time to put this video together. Very helpful!
(Gets to the end…) “what do you mean it’s already over?! More more MORE!” Great interview. Only slightly sad my question didn’t get asked. Also that 3D face tracking for the power window makes me want to learn Resolve for grading.
Pls learn resolve. I was scared of the interface at first, but in two days, I know where each tool was and could find my way. It is an interesting software and makes color-grading an exhilarating experience for every colorist. The 3D face tracker is boss. It's so powerful for it makes your face pop...
I want to be able to do color work! Can't ever have enough of this.
Thank you so much for such an amazing workshop dissolved in almost 35 minutes that I could watch in the comfort of my home. if you don’t wanna deal in post production with noise for low expose then don't underexpose. As simple as that ! Gracias Armando, con este vídeo sacaste la pelota del estadio. Un abrazo desde Panamá 🇵🇦
I LOVED this video! It was absolutely fascinating to watch this guy work and to see his workflow! Thank you so much for sharing.
I love how refreshing it is to hear from an industry pro.
This guy is on another level! wow.
This is such an educated piece I had ever watched! Thank you Armando putting these together
This is such an informative video Armando, hats off. Would happily pay for a comprehensive colouring video with Shane.
I could have watched two hours of that or longer! Armando what about his graded footage how do we see his grade? Please share thanks x
Exactly, I was desperate to see the graded one 🔥
This was crazy good, tons of info! That guy knows his stuff. I don’t know a ton about color grading and that guy just made me even worse 🤣🤣🤣 thanks mondo!
This is incredible! You are very humble man for sharing and being open with us.
The video i was looking for month ago, thanks to both of you!
Wow I finally understood HDR from that explanation! Thanks!
Wow. Super fascinating. Great stuff
WOW. That's INSANE, I can't even explain how much value of this video has
Loved hearing this insight from an actual colourist! thank you for sharing Armando 😀
hahahahaha it made me feel so bad about not calibrating my monitorsssss :p Amazing Armando, saw your tweet and was anxious to watch it :)
Idk how you can dislike this video, Armando out here giving free workshops lol
disliked by people who think that story is everything, but they do not realize that a story can be enhanced by colors as well. basically, elitists doush
@@petrub27 I got the opposite-people who worry too much about technicality and equipment tend to lose the soul and story of the project. I respect Tyler Stalman’s question, but I love the answer to it: focus on the story! My ethos, and my company’s ethos, is that story IS everything
@@javebjorkman yet you can't detach it from the visual eye candy, camera motion and lightning, basically the technical aspect of the movie. But I think he ment what you said
You can dislike the fact that it's shorter than it ought to be :)
@@petrub27 there is definitely a marriage between technical prowess and masterful storytelling. I think we're just fed with all technical stuff on RUclips. He was refreshing because finally someone who's not also just focused on stuff
This is an AMAZING video, great to have this insight from an industry professional!!!
Excellent content!!! Keep this up!!! It gives us content creators loads of confidence to hear a professional speak in this way.
This video is not long enough. It should've been 10 hours. :P
The difference of thought between a Professional and a hobbyist / social media content creator is absolutely amazing to witness.
Amazing video! What a great dude and he really did an excellent job of explaining everything very clearly, a great representative for Dolby and such a great way of reaching out and educating and informing through this channel, great interview and inside look at his approach and the base foundations of colouring :)
That top and bottom luminance adjustment was a great tip. Another tool in the arsenal. That was dope.
