Thanks for this, ive been critical of the technical side of these recently but i am very fucking grateful for your interviews. Cant wait to watch all the recent ones. Cheers.
I feel like Baby Driver was to Wright's filmography what 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' was to Wes Anderson's. Everything was pulled off perfectly, but somehow it didn't have as much heart as some of the earlier films. Great to watch, but also forgettable and just "too" smooth... there was something more special about his earlier films (except for The World's End). Baby Driver seemed like Wright had just 'gone through the motions' while making Baby Driver. I wonder if this just happens to every director after a dozen films...
"The World's End" was a great movie. It had a great story with sympathetic characters, detailed meticulous foreshadowing, and themes that relate to the whole Cornetto trilogy (perpetual adolescence, individuals against a collective, etc.) while still delivering as just much emotion as "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz".
This wasn't made after a dozen films. It was like his 5th movie. But in regards to your comment about it being "too smooth", I agree. I think part of it was because of the movie's larger budget. They also shot it on film but then went over everything digitally to smooth out the edges and I think that hurts the film and makes it look like a commercial or something.
Hi Edgar Write, if you ever get to see this comment I want to tell you that I am working on a screenplay and want to know if one day you could look at it. I'm a bit young, but I hope you coukd take a chance on me.
What damning comments on dubbing. The main reason a movie does not play well when dubbed is that... the dubbing is poor. There are some exceptions, in particular with comedy- comedy is sometimes difficult to translate well. Of course the original will always be better. And i personally prefer to read subtitles if needed. But poor dubbing is a thing, and directors should maybe pay more attention!
I'm not sure if it's the lighting, camera setup or postproduction but I noticed some skin tone issues - it's a bit washed out, overexposed and monochromatic. Anyway, Baby Driver didn't grab me as much as his other stuff (quite funny yet trying to be serious and failing) but it grew on me. I'll quote Adam Koebel and say it was a way better musical than La La Land :)
'How do you feel that one of the actors in your latest film has been recently exposed as a sexual predator?' Obviously, Wright isn't in anyway complicit in Spacey's actions, but I think his silence on the issue is a bit disturbing. The revelations came only months after his movie was released, and Wright did press with him while promoting the film.
Well, you don't know until you ask him, do you? But if you want to get into it, what can Wright say about Baby Driver that he hasn't already said during all the press he has done since it came out? Why would one single question 'overshadow' Wright's work? And why does the quality of work affect the right to ask a question? If he had done a worse job would it be more ok to ask that question?
My opinion of Scott Pilgrim has improved (already _loved_ it but thought it flawed). I only wish he'd included the bathroom Nega-Scott scene, just to make Scott's arc a bit clearer. World's End remains a disappointment. Haven't seen Baby Driver yet.
10 seconds in and he's talking about Raising Arizona...that's Edgar Wright alright
He looks great for being 43 I love his hair
44 years old he looks like he’s 27!? That’s incredible 😳
I'm so happy to see this comment! Because he looks so young to have 44 years old and now he's 47 and looks so boyish and stunning!
Whatever he does next will be fantastic. I can not wait to see what his next artistic endeavor will be. A totally original mind and vision.
Get Paul Thomas Anderson!!!! Love love love your interviews! Thank you so much
I could've watched this for hoursss! Also, this is the chillest I've seen Edgar when talking about ant man

Baby Driver is fucking brilliant, one of my favourites this year
i was hoping for this, and now it exists
Always a great interviewee
34:20 Really killer question regarding Ant-Man. Seems like he doesn't like to be the director for hire.
The Ant Man bus ad story is hilarious
yay! so happ for him, he really deserves it.
great director!
Loved his work
Goddamn, i love how happy Edgar Wright is. And to think of what f*ing arrogant divas I've worked with in acting.
Holly Hunter is AMAZING in Copycat with Sigourney Weaver
YES!!!

Good movie
Man I love Jason Reitman
19:00 Rehearsing the script with the actors is very important
Where's my boy Nolan? You never made interview with him.
Mr Nolan has made himself unavailable.

KEENG LOUIE, then why, when I'm typing on RUclips "christopher nolan interview", I find hundreds of videos where he is interviewed?

... alright i forgive you for Guillermo Del Toro
I've loved Wrights other movies and I'm impressed with Wright himself, but I couldn't finish Baby Driver. So awkward, so miscast...
I couldn't stop laughing myself. It's a phenomenal movie.

"Like you know like you know like like like like you know..."
I adore his movies, but his way of talking is terrible
Do they discuss Kevin Spacey in this ?
nope
mdtys shame
Not a shame, a good thing.
I wonder how many times Kevin Spacey tried to diddle Ansel Elgort and he just sat in the corner and watched.
Such a cop-out for you to not to ask about Kevin Spacey
What question would you have liked him to answer?
'How do you feel that one of the actors in your latest film has been recently exposed as a sexual predator?'
Obviously, Wright isn't in anyway complicit in Spacey's actions, but I think his silence on the issue is a bit disturbing. The revelations came only months after his movie was released, and Wright did press with him while promoting the film.

We. Don't. Know. What. He. Had. To. Say. Because. The. Question. Was. Never. Asked.
Why are you so obsessed with protecting a 43-year old man from being asked a relevant question?
I'm a big fan but I didn't like baby driver at all. I think he needs a good co-writer.
His last three films have been a real let down.
Are you talking about Scot Pilgrim, The worlds End and Baby Driver cos if you are - REWATCH them, you are dead wrong.
My opinion of Scott Pilgrim has improved (already _loved_ it but thought it flawed). I only wish he'd included the bathroom Nega-Scott scene, just to make Scott's arc a bit clearer.
World's End remains a disappointment. Haven't seen Baby Driver yet.
