- In this video, our community gets the chance to ask filmmaking legend Edgar Wright anything. As the director of box office hits such as Hot Fuzz and Last Night in Soho, but also as a film school reject, it is fascinating to learn about his granular tips on storyboarding and sound editing filmmaking, as well as his broader insights about working behind the camera.
Whether it’s establishing how to research or put together a story that will translate well to the screen, how to work with people you may be starstruck by, or even how to find the perfect music to create unforgettable needle drops in your film, Edgar Wright shares his own advice on how to become a director and make the films you want to make.
There’s no wrong time to start, the only wrong thing to do is to not start at all.

Edgar Wright is personally my filmmaker hero as I admire his storytelling, humour, and especially his unique editing style and Camera Quick Cuts.
Me too!
That man is the main cause as to why I wanna be a filmmaker later
His movies are just so much damn fun to watch, all for their own unique reasons. Seeing Hot Fuzz in theaters was such a rad time.
I wish he and Simon and nick would team up one last time. I miss their humor and amazing movies
Same
I hate that it took me so long to find this video. I could listen to him talk about movies (especially his) all day, every day.
Edgar is such a joy to listen to, to learn from. Man, wish I could get this course right now, it clearly is worth every penny.
It is a criminal offense that this video isn't viewed by more people, especially with people who love cinema. Edgar is a modern cinematic genius. Listening to him you get the impression that he not only knows his craft but loves and lives by it. Truly a legend.
Its only for the chosen one
I’m trying to get into filmmaking (just submitted a script to BBC Writersroom), and I viewed Edgar’s course and found it super insightful. I’m going to try and make some short films and write more scripts. Hopefully get an agent and really pursue this fully before the end of the year.
Nah, this ait for everyone and that's good, it's our little secret, this is basically a cheat sheet
So much respect for this guy. Scott Pilgrim 🙌🙌🙌
Edgar Wright is an absolute legend when it comes to engaged filmmaking. Listening to him gush over the filmmaking process only makes me more intrigued in him. I mean, after all, if you're a director that isn't enjoying the problem solving aspect of filmmaking then what are you doing? I mean think about this: He sent out an e-mail to every actor from _Scott Pilgrim_ to reprise their role to play their characters for the new Netflix _Scott Pilgrim Takes Off_ anime. All of them basically said "Yes!" within not days, not weeks, but 3 HOURS of him sending that. That tells you how much he's regarded to work with in the film industry. He's definitely the biggest inspiration for me as an editor. I loved his concept of using sound to be a prominent voice in the editing process. Sound is essentially 50% of the film to make known! Timing scenes to the beat of the background music like with _Baby Driver_ or using seemingly random sounds (at first if you don't know his directing/editing style) match with the situations happening in the scenes of _Scott Pilgrim vs. the World_ . That is what I strive for because it's so fun and engaging to watch. I want to entertain people in the same way that Edgar Wright does.
Edgar is the most brilliant director IN THE WORLD!
He's definitely one of my favourite.
He seems to care about and respect everyone he works with.
I really like his take on films, and music in films. How many times have you heard a song and thought "this would be great, in a movie" I've been into foreign music, for 20 or 30 years now, and know; this will never be in a film, but you could, do it this way. I don't speak any other languages, but really love many of these songs, that evoke a certain feeling, from them. Two that come to mind; 'As if you were mine' by Jo Sung Mo (really one of the saddest songs I've ever heard) and the other being; 'Plastic Love' originally by Mariya Takeuchi, in 1985, but covered by hundreds of people since then (and the song that launched an entire genre; 'City Pop')
Big fan of Edgar Wright, few celebs I can think of that are more humble, the success hasn't gone to his head at all
This should have a million views
we agree
Hot fuzz is comfort food for me, and Shaun of the dead was freaking awesome! I now too am working now on my short film
Gotta love Edgar, but I swear he spends more time talking about movies than making the darn things lol!

Regent Street Cinema, love it.
Has big best buddy energy
At a young age I watched the shit out of hot fuzz and it’s my favourite movie so seeing his opinion and listening to his advice is so inspiring
You watched the shit out of it? That sounds like it should have been a line out of Hot Fuzz. Probably said by Nick Frost. An awesome and underrated movie indeed
He is a genius.
The Cornetto Trilogy was brilliant
There is like 6 flavours of cornetto, we need those other 3 flavours.
