    This makes you realise just how fully formed Edgar Wright's vision is before each movie - 90% of the stuff on that brainstorming sketchpad is in the final film - when does that EVER happen!?

      Most times a good director has the film visualised like a comic book, scene for scene. Except for when the producers have final word. Then, I think, the writer/director is screwed out of anything. I love directors cut. Ruined films get a chance.

      @@sketta. at the same time lots of planning allows the story to be internaly consistant and allows every scene to contribute to the themes you want your story to be about.

      Rhys Clark Film & media That’s a good point, I think I phased this wrong I meant planning every little thing can make your write predictable and for me at least writing “blindly” ( not really theirs a blueprint) can allow you to get to know and create your characters and get to know them like real people also personally I’m able to write and not overstay my welcome

      @@LukasOfTheLight Only someone who doesn't write would write what you wrote. What you saw in that video is the synopsis of all their ideas. It's like 3000 ideas in those 15 minutes. They then had to expand all of them and consider every little detail in notes they didn't show.

      Check out Max Landis (user: uptomyknees) if you want some cool short videos on behind the scenes scriptwriting. Max himself is a little divisive in terms of his personality but I like him, and his passion for what he does is infectious.

    Wright and Pegg are one of the greatest writing duos of all time. Wright is great on his own but Pegg really brings the best out of him script wise.

    Creating an "arsenal of ideas", to use the term Pegg mentions with regards to the flipchart, before you actually start scripting seems like a brilliant idea and something I might try for my next script. I liked the chart they had about the protagonist that just list character attributes, many of which never even made it into the final script.

      Abstract ideas are easier on paper. Far easier to connect ideas, write them don quickly, draw them, whatever. Word processors are better for putting it all together.

      I mean Transformers movies get over 100 million dollars worth of budget and the script is written by 3 people usually.
      Hot Fuzz has a budget of 8 million dollars and written by these two. It baffles me how Hot Fuzz is way more intelligent than all of the transformers films put together

      Noah King Awe inspiring? When you write stories for films you have to be accurate in depicting the scenes. So that people can work on visualizing it. Writing down ideas just requires time and effort. Brainstorming and creating ideas is the hard part.

    This is amazing! It's like they tried to put every thought they had onto paper. This is the closest I've ever seen to the inside of a writers head brought out into the physical world. Maybe I should try writing down my thoughts more like this sometime.

    The only time Edgar's looked appreciably *young* is in Dead Wright. After that, he just became 28 and remained there for 18 years. Cameos on Spaced? 28. This? 28. Conventions five months ago? 28. He is getting younger. The government keep it very hush-hush.

    Going into the 3rd minute, I can already see so much effort already being put into fleshing out the writing. And look how all of these paid off. We were then given one of the best-written action-comedy films, perhaps even one of the best films, ever made.

    Writing a screenplay is like doing a children's puzzle that has lots of different shaped holes in it.
    You just have to find the right peg for each hole.

    I love all the foreshadowing.
    There was one point that I thought was a running foreshadow but didn't come up again: I think, after the house blew up, we could see the church in the distance, foreshadowing the next death.

      I personally think they never should have made that movie. Yes it was absolutely atrocious, but even if someone like Wright directed it, the movie added nothing to the Avatar universe.

    This is so cool.
    I love Hot Fuzz. It's probably the best British film of the last twenty years.
    Apart maybe from 1917.
    And that wasn't as amusing... so if you're in it to giggle, Hot Fuzz takes the mantle.
    SUCH a great film...

    hot fuzz is one of the best scripts ever written. every word spoken has a payoff, every action matters. there isn't a single scene in the movie the viewer doesn't get something out of.

      @@PawelSlab edgar was a co director on it and eventually his vision didn't work with the other director so he left or they let him go, I'm not quite sure. But an edgar Wright comic book movie would've been amazing.

    My issue with this is how discordant it is from my own capabilities. How can you have a singular thought for each character or moment and then write it down and it is all relevant? I would start to write something and it would be crossed and rewritten and torn off and written over or begin huge and end small
    Or did they sketch out ideas on a piece of paper and then add the really considered ideas on to the flip chart ?
