- Went to Kyoto Budokan to see kyudo. Pleasantly surprised to see that it was not on anyone's tourist plan, and got to see the art up close and personal without anyone else around. The people practicing were very gracious and, cannot be overstated, graceful.
Kyudo is so peaceful, its teaching and how disciplined you are to go through evry steps before firing a bow. It really cures anxiety and gives you a peace of mind

It looks like high grade military indoctrination to me, what’s with the unnatural robotic movements, the girls looking like dolls without soul. What are they trying to portray exactly?
To me, more than peaceful it looks bizarre and uncanny. Like, it’s not the natural flow of nature, things do not flow like that. It’s like trying to reduce the human essence, which is full of emotion and spirit, into a bland empty thing void of soul and spirit, an object that has nothing inside.
I want to hug that girl, shake her shoulders and tell her “Hey! Wake up! You’re human, not an object, you don’t have to do none of that nonsense. Smile! Be happy, stop being a robot...
The amount of comments that don't understand that this is ceremonial archery, not combat archery concerns me. Like no duh, Japanese warriors didn't shoot 1 arrow every 20 seconds, use your brain and try to understand culture.

It's called yugaeri. When you shot, the momentum together with the tenouchi makes the bow turn in your hand.

Yknow, when I first watched Princess Mononoke I couldn't understand how Ashitaka was able to literally decapitate a fully-armored samurai with a single arrow... And now I've been watching japanese archery for about half an hour and... yea... makes more sense.

I can't imagine hunting with that. Can you imagine what a few modern deer hunters would do to a group of ... those bow men/women/whatever ?
I know this isn't same thing as archery.. but gosh, I'd get so impatient having to go through all those motions BEFORE I can take a shot ^^;
There are approximately 171,476 words In the english lexicon. And in each of those words holds the capacity to create something beautiful, things that can take the mind to places unreachable otherwise, things that can create memories that will be cherished for years, things that are the foundation to everything weve known for hundreds if years but no. No no no, you had to say that, you had to take this beautiful system we have created and form it in to a horrid amalgamation of dread and vile. The audacity of you to not only think of this but to spend time and effort to share it with us is appalling, and what's more is that you think nothing of it, you just go about your day as if you didnt just spit in the face of language and all that is good. I rarely ever think of death but this is the closest I've come to craving the sweet release of it. So thank you, for ruining my day and quite possibly my life.

I'm biased. But I believe if true Mongols had invaded Japan they would have won. There horse and archery skill were second to none. If they'd brought Chinese gunpowder and proto grenades/ rockets it would have been a set victory. Unless ofcourse.....a storm would yknow come and ruin everything

They did very well in the first invasion, before loosing more than half of their fleet in a typhon, and were blocked in a stalemate during the second one, where... they AGAIN lost most of their fleet in a typhoon. The forces left in japan got quickly slaughtered

The shot must be accurate af after putting so much effort preparing.
No, on average only 25% hit the target. This isn't archery. Someone who has done this and is at the apex in their community hit between 50-75% of each arrow. This is more about the spirituality and movement of drawing the bow more so than shots on target.
They said, this is art, not about the accuraccy, but i've seen some videos of kyudo which they show off or contesting their accuracy.
Maybe japan have different kind of tournament or contest for kyudo/kyujutsu which they score the art or the accuracy, or both.
But i heard that kyudo is mean for art, and kyujutsu is mean for war, so i think the japanese archery accuracy contest is for kyujutsu. This is just my conclusion.

The Japanese Yumi is not used for hunting. Hunting bows in Japan are smaller and symmetrical and utilize different form

No es realmente el objetivo, el kyudo es mas una especie de meditación, ejercicio y disciplina de los movimientos, concentración y respiración, que una competencia de quien le da más al blanco. Las artes marciales se clasifican como internas o externas, las artes marciales internas son mas de desarollo personal o espiritual, autocontrol, que de ganar competencias o ser mas fuerte. El tai chi es otra arte marcial interna, no se practica para pelear, el iaido japones también es muy similar al kyudo en cuanto a formas y objetivos, a diferencia del kendo, karate, judo, que si se compiten.

For some reason there are not many videos where they'd show the target or announce results. It looks like they are focusing on a process. This is a big difference between Western and Eastern cultures.
@@figase6231 that's really not the case, west is actually Quite intrested in the process and art of their form, form matter but not as the result. We think like that because most of the videos are based on their form and process so. kyudo is more of a spiritual practice or something, it focuses mainly on the art of perfecting archery, as well as treating it as a competitive sport, scores indeed matter in competitive sport afterall. Forgive me if I am wrong on this one but only japanese do kyudo. There might be international instances of competitive kyudo outside of Japan, but mainly happens in Japan only.

Thank you for your comment :) I'd say it was, especially in making sure the foundation is correct. But if you meant the method of pulling back on the bow vis~a~vis a European longbow, apologies, I don't think I'm qualified to answer that.
Extremely if your enemy is static and extremely quiet. Legend has it on that enemys would be mesmerized with the grace and elegance of the shooter and quietly watch their death.
This is not how they're used in combat, it's just practice like a regular Archery thing but with a bow larger than you
The bow were used in war, but the archers obviously didn't do all these slow and precise moves before firing.
It’s simply a ritual these young girls are taught. It teaches patience and attention to detail. I find it graceful and beautiful myself.
