I don't think Americans fully realize how insane the rest of the world think your country is. The idea of citizens roaming around with any guns, never mind AK47s, weapons only for war, is so sickeningly crazy. We've been having problems in Canada with random knife attacks because of a mental illness crisis. But we have gun control so fatalities are extremely limited. I can't imagine how all of you are living with this, it honestly makes me cry every time.
How do parents send their children to school? I couldn't do it.
Thank you for your support. It is a horror for most Americans, especially because we see one entire political party fighting to keep automatic weapons to be "the national gun". We will do everything we can to get them out of office.

The headline from FL that Gov Desantis "quietly" legalizes carrying concealed weapons without a permit, really scares me. Even the pic of him with a smug grin is terrifying! Happy to say I live in Massachusetts. Can anyone see where this nightmare ends?
Yeah, he did it behind closed doors with no fanfare. Because he knows that, even in such a Red state, this is against what the majority want. And what police want.
I live in ID, where cutting someone off in traffic by accident can turn into a shooting.
Move to another country and we'll be happy to see you part...
I'm a vet and got rid of my guns when my kids were still under 5. I regret not destroying them all, shotgun pistols, etc. I grew up with them, I had an expert marksman ribbon from my time in service. I realized after that, that maybe with law enforcement (so long as guns are present in our society) does. Guns are a plague to society and many of the people who have them are cowards - it took guts for me. After I was divorced I lived next to heroin addicts and crack addicts in a not so nice neighbor hood for the next 5 years.
I had a shirtless wired out crack addict walk into my house without knocking I didn't know. I calmly told him he wasn't in the right house and he should leave then I stood in front of him blocking further entry silently without moving many seconds passed in silence as I stared into his eyes, he left. I learned common sense that you should use even if you have a gun. Don't flaunt your wealth and possession as people won't steal what they don't know exists. I learned that you can be intimating even as a small person (I'm 5'7") if you walk the walk and talk the talk. Nobody stole from me, but even if they did I would never have bought more. I didn't need them. I may well one day be shot though I live in a much safer neighborhood in another state now.
I don't live like a coward and clutch at a gun next to my bed every time there is a noise in the house or play quickdraw in the mirror if someone hurts my feeling. I don't let myself get (too) angry at people no matter what, and now I've lived out most of my life I realize that most I know who have them are cowards and don't know how to deal with their emotions very well, it's called character. I'm not saying all, but many. You're more likely to die from a fall on your stairs than a bad guy with a gun, so spend your money on padding your stairs, it would be a better investment.
The world is never ever safe, but it's a lot more unsafe now the way the gun companies have their proxies (the GoP) running interference for them in this cash for blood arrangement. Vote for sane politicians who actually want to help fix this problem and not just line their pockets while hiding behind a lie, the fig leave narrative of the second amendment.

Good for you, brother. I too am an Army vet over 50. Got rid of my guns many years ago. I’m born ,raised and work in Chicago. I work in some of the “most dangerous” of the city; in the early hours of the night. NEVER had a problem. No need to cling to a gun. Too bad most young vets are seriously damaged and heavily Armed. Stay safe out there.

The Tennessee intended to silence Justin Jones by voting him out. Instead, it had the opposite effect. They gave Justin Jones a louder voice in his fight against gun violence.

Unfortunately, the message is yet again muddled. The optics of the ordeal will serve as an iconic day for both sides, with two perspectives.

Such a shame. Iowa used to be a moderate state. Everyone got along, there were NO harsh restrictions....but the Governor has turned full on EXTREMIST. Iowa is no longer the lovely state it used to be. Women and children are under attack.
The entire female population is going to suffer because obgyn docs are not going to live in these states. That's going to put every pregnancy at risk.
My Mom wanted to be buried in Iowa, her home state. But, I'm not stepping onto that lovely soil again until those sensible folk wake up to where the politicians are steering our country. I agree with the old conservatives - my grandpa was a very 'woke' farmer. He was the first to fertilize his fields, the first to till across a slope rather than straight up and down. He had no problem hiring women, colored or brown folk to live, and work on the farm. Everyone attended the same churches and ate at the same table. The current political climate would have him writing letters to his representatives in state and federal offices, telling them to use common sense and stop destroying our children's future.

Being from Iowa in the 70s was something to be proud of - today its just embarrassing. Looking to move out for my last chapter.
At one point, Iowa had one of the nation's best public education systems. Seems like it didn't take with the Republicans raised there.
If I was a pregnant woman living in Iowa, I'd be afraid to even go on vacation or a work trip out of the state in case I had a medical emergency and my pregnancy had to be terminated or I had a miscarriage. I can't imagine coming home grieving my loss and then being investigated for purposely causing the miscarriage and losing my freedom.
It's obvious politicians in Iowa don't understand the Plan B pill. It stops a woman's ovary from releasing an egg. It does NOT cause an embryo to be aborted. It's really no different than what birth control pills do -- stop an egg from leaving the ovary.
I grew up in Iowa, too. I left as soon as I could.

I lived in Iowa in the 70's and I was proud to see such a forward-thinking progressive place. It was a true reflection of the American way of life.- a place for all. Now I read about Iowa and see it as going back in time .
All of those Supreme Court judges who, when questioned about Roe v. Wade, answered that it was established law and then overturned it when they had a chance should be disbarred!

Apparently the people of America have no power, the majority want stronger background checks, and assault guns banned but the legislature has decided they prefer the money given to them by NRA. Something has to change now, people are dead because of their desire for money and power. I am tired of children and adults being killed for their love of money.

The night of the Delaware Christiana Mall shooting I had to call my daughter to do a check-in with them not knowing how close this was. My son in law was in the area but not in the same building but once my daughter said the words, "we're safe," I balled my eyes out and said, "I love you!" about a dozen times. These gawddamned Republicans can't be voted out quick enough.

Doctors, health care providers, young people and young married couples will likely think twice about moving to Idaho now. And the same for those already resident there, remaining in Idaho.
It's not just pro-choice young people and couples that will be abandoning Idaho. ANY woman wanting to get pregnant in Idaho can no longer be guaranteed good prenatal care in the state. Because any serious complications with her pregnancy are FAR more likely to result in harm (up to and including death) for the mother-to-be. Because doctors will be far more reluctant to provide proper prenatal health care, lest they be accused of being abortionists by rabid anti-abortionists literally out for blood.

I kind of figured this would happen pdq with obgyn's in these backward states. Doctor's take the Hippocratic Oath in order to protect their patients lives to the best of their ability. This law handcuffs them to the whimsy of a bunch of religious zealots who believe things like a ectopic pregnancy is still viable. The GOP have criminalized pregnancy and have given second thoughts to any young couple in the state of Idaho when thinking of starting a family. The party is FUBAR.

I read that book as an undergrad when Reagan was president and worried it was on the way then, back when I was still fertile. Hard to believe that here I am, retired and past menopause and I'm STILL worried about Gilead, as a mother of two daughters and grandmother of two girls.

when covering these mass shootings, include a mini-profile in your coverage of one senator or congressman who takes gun lobby money. list how much they've received, and then point out something that they own that has relatively the same value. for example, "Senator John Tait, in his fourteen years as a lawmaker, has received just under three hundred thousand dollars from gun lobbyists. he also happens to own this vacation property in his neighbouring state, valued at two hundred ninety six thousand dollars."

Adding a mental health screen and requirement for letters of reference from family and coworkers would have prevented at least a dozen of these big public mass shootings. People who do this don’t spring up out of nowhere. They’re sending signals RIGHT NOW. Don’t sell them guns.
Anyone who has a concern should be able to report in person. If the officer finds them credible then somebody’s name needs to go on a list. Even a doctor should be able to do it. We have to try something. I understand that there will be ppl abusing this but maybe we could save some lives.

I believe that faced with an extra year in school after spending weeks boycotting school for meaningful gun control, or carrying on going to school in fear, they would choose to stay in school for that extra year, these children are wise enough to make such a choice.

Yep, thoughts and prayers is the 'the go to' response every time. This is inevitably followed by some variation of 'this is not the time to legislate. This is the time to grieve.' And of course, nothing else gets done. Well, that excludes the reality of more people dying as a result of gun violence. I don't believe that is much of an accomplishment, though.

With the seeming prevalence of gun violence in this country, it is only a matter of probability before this violence affects the lives of those in high office and/or their friends and family members. It is unfortunate that many of these people in high office can not feel the pain inflicted upon the people that they have sworn to serve, at least not until these nightmares are visited upon themselves. I do not wish harm to anyone, but the laws of probability can not be avoided and it may prove to be a hard lesson learned for those that perpetuate these circumstances.
Thank god for Mondays with Rachael! We miss watching Rachael every evening in our home.

Governor Jay Inslee doing what needs to be done to protect reproductive rights and the providers of those services. Between this letter to the Governor of Idaho and the recent ruling out of Washington State that basically reversed the Texas ban on Mifepristone, I am glad to see Washington State getting into the mix and fighting the good fight.

You know what's funny? As a younger man, I remember watching reports on the North Hollywood shootout and Marvin Heemeyer's armoured bulldozer rampagage. It influenced the way I both consumed and created fiction, specifically super-hero fiction. This idea of heavily-armed criminals in active shootouts with police, who require the help of Superman or Robocop or some other abhuman hero to address was formative. For the longest time, I used to think that these were just silly fictional ideas - that things like this just don't happen in the real world, outside of very rare circumstances or maybe "third world" failed states.
So here we are, with police engaged in gunfights against armoured assailants, with both police and civilian casualties. All of a sudden, I feel 20 years younger... and not in a good way.

Sure showing a lot more emotion than the Tennessee governor who lost a friend to a mass just a few days ago. It isn't a contest, but some folks are more loyal to the gun lobby than their own friends.
My state is fighting back, and I am proud and grateful. Thank you to the Evergreen State, my sweet home.
