Why Murder Rates Are Rising In The U.S.

- There was about a 30% increase nationally in murder between 2019 and 2020, which is the largest year-over-year increase ever recorded. While there was a slight increase of about 6% between 2020 and 2021, preliminary 2022 data from big cities suggests that the murder rate may be dropping. The pandemic was a major catalyst in the rise in murder, but it’s not the only factor. Watch the video above to learn why murder rates have been rising in the U.S. and what we can do to reverse the trend.
“There was a massive surge in legal purchases of guns during the pandemic,” Abt said. “A larger share of those legally purchased guns were diverted into the hands of criminals more quickly than normal.”
There were an estimated 21 million guns sold in the U.S. in 2020, breaking the previous record in 2016 of just over 16 million guns sold. In 2021, that number dropped slightly to a little less than 19 million.
The data shows that the rising trend in murder rates occurred all across the country.
“We saw increases in violent crime across all different kinds of geographic areas in the United States,” said Anna Harvey, professor of politics at New York University. “People have also looked at partisan control of cities, and there’s no evidence at all that violent crime increased more in cities that were Democrat relative to cities that were led by Republican mayors.”
However, there is some hope that the numbers may be turning around. Preliminary big city data from the first half of 2022 suggests that the murder rate may be declining year to date.

Why Murder Rates Are Rising In The U.S.
I can tell you right now, growing up in the hood, my fear was never a random white guy coming to shoot up the hood... It was drive bys.. or random shooting on the block because of a drug deal gone wrong... or just straight robbery at gun point.
So if we are being genuine about murder rates in the back community, we need to take accountability ...
@40acresandatractor police 💀 they’re the only white guys in the hood killing ppl
Money is the root of the issue.. if ppl was able to afford to live more ppl would be happy, less crime
@Save 🇺🇸 reality isn’t an excuse, the truth is.. when you’re a crab in a bucket that was set up by the us government to be less then for generations.. this is the outcome of those things.. this exactly what the government wants! oppression to depression.. which leads to angry folks trying to get out the bucket and knocking each other while doing so
@@joestuff8 just because you’ve seen a white dude in the hood doesn’t change the statistics. The biggest taker of black lives by far is other black people. Everyone has made the police the boogeyman but in reality police shootings make up a small percentage of black deaths. You’d think BLM would care more about black on black crime but that would make too much sense.
Well said sir

Right off the bat its propaganda. There isn't an angry mob of white people murdering black people in the inner cities. I don't know who they're trying to fool.

I am born and raised in Harlem. I went to school. Worked as a cashier, saved money, brought a simple car, traveled a little, and chose my friends wisely. Now as a grown man, I have my own business and achieved everything I wanted in this world. All you need is the proper mindset and the right guidance. please do not focus on the past but be in the present moment and prepare for the future.
Well said congrats sir!
Emphasis on “chose my friends, wisely” you are the five people you spend the most time with.
@A B I was going to blatantly come out and hit you with an insult but I restrained myself. Harlem in a early 90s used to be very bad. It was worse in the late 80s. At 41 years old, I'm telling you from experience , so you should do your research. And yes I know it's Manhattan but you have good and bad areas just like Chicago and Los Angeles. FYI, I've been to Dominican Republic I've been to Puerto Rico and I've been to South America. I've seen no support for the poor, bad infrastructure no jobs lack of education, virtually little to no opportunities for the comment man or woman. These people come to America and try to make a better life for themselves. In Missouri or Arkansas they are a lot more opportunities than in a third world country ( exclude PR). The point I'm trying to make is that it's your choice you can move to a different location or take advantage of opportunities that you have at your disposal. Or you can play the victim card and choose to commit crimes to survive. I can tell you an example of a friend of mine's who lives in Brooklyn. He's family came from Haiti his father did odd jobs got his driver's license became a cab driver put all his kids in community college. Now my friend is making $250,000 a year as a project manager. 😂 He only goes to the office twice a week. God bless him in a right choices he made 👌

What caused a given community to become crime ridden in the first place? If you are not looking at the underlying causes then you are missing the point. Communities of color are generally the most marginalized and suffer from constant profiling by police.
The lack of opportunity and the growing wealth gap leaves these marginalized communities on the fringe of society. There is continued structural racism that perpetuates the divide in this country between people of color and whites.

The huge, endless amount of crime in the US & Europe is nurtured & encouraged by the money system that's supposed to stop crime, lawyers - everybody wants to become a lawyer, prosecutors, these social workers. Crime is a massive money maker. Has anybody ever wondered why straightforward forward simple murder cases take years to resolve, why convicted criminals are sentenced to life, but then they say he can be released after 20 years? They sentence a vicious murderer to death but the sentence is never carried out opening up an endless sequence of costly appeals, someone is making money & it's the legal people. Criminals are regularly released to make more crime & money for the “legal” industry. Being responsible comes with a heightened attention span. If your span of attention has declined over time, you will easily become agitated and warped by where ever the direction of feelings and thoughts drag you.
Because of this, you will miss out on the areas where you are wrong and that always leads to not facing responsibilities. People don't care to give their accountabilities attention.
They are so unaware of the many hearts they have broken and the many feet that they have stepped on, that they don't know it's even there. "It's an attack on black men"... committed by which group????
That's wild.... I'm a black man, but I DON'T behave like the typical hood guy. I was actually called an oreo in high school. It's wild.

I had a lot of problems growing up that led into my adulthood. I was blaming everything and everyone. I blamed my parents, my schoolmates, teachers, my upbringing, my environment, my family's financial problems, etc. I hit my 30's and something had to change. It wasn't until I took full responsibility for the situation I was continuing to put myself in, that I started to make any changes and make any positive head-way in life.
same here brother... i grew up broke and i was reckless and never took accountability in anything just the blame game. I went back to school and worked my way into a field I am doing great in. Now I own a home which i never thought i ever could and got myself out of debt besides mortgage. Not a lavish life but way better than where I ever was. I hope you're doing well best wishes

Yup. Same here. It started with self-accountability and gratitude.

Shout out to those who worked their way out of their crappy neighborhood! Nothing but respect for you!
There is no shame, respect, accountability...the list goes on and on. Also, doing EVERYTHING possible to attract the police really isn't working out either.
There need to be class action lawsuits against these negligent prosecutors.

exactly in states that are democrat run and pro defund police and stuff.....

How about you check American Culture? Just because your uneducated brain can’t process how poverty leads to crime isn’t no one fault except your own!
Then what do you suggest the government and people do besides destroying a culture you deem inferior
If you listen to hip hop music, it's about money and status. That's what Black culture values, and teenagers with little support will sometimes turn to crime to get it.

What an interesting way of turning the tables: “black people are more likely to be victimized by gun violence”
…”by whom, ma’am? Me and other Asians want to know”
그것은 미스터리예요.
…by other black people.
Daam, they mislabeled Rochester NY as Rochester MN at 9:27 :(
So why did violent crime reduce so much in the period before this? I hear all sorts of theories. It's worth knowing what went right as well as what went wrong.
Is there any patterns we could see in data on who is doing these crimes ?
blk
Black people, its childish thwy dont reference the perpetrators.
Yes, they are right wing domestic terrorists.
Exactly. They gloss over that dark secret...
It's black men. It would be racist to say it.
But how about the suspects responsible for the shootings? They talked about the victims, who may be affected, and where it would happen but they never said who are the suspects
That would be racist.
Hmm weird right? Lol

Black on black crime, that's the suspects and the victims.

I feel as though this depicts black people as a whole a causing violence within their community when it’s black men that cause I would say pretty much all the gun violence within the black community. The lack of accountability is astounding.
Exactly! Black men. And certain black men at that
I said the same thing! As a black woman we don’t account for black on black crime. It’s the men killing each other and women. It’s sad.

From what I can tell it’s the elderly people and the mothers with children who want more of a police presence in these areas…basically the folks who are the most vulnerable. The single men on the other hand seem to be the ones yelling the most about “police brutality”, even though such events are less frequent than shark and mountain lion attacks.
To fix the problem, you have to identify the problem in the first place. Yes, discrimination, poverty, and these factors play a role, but there is also a huge problem with violent crimes in the African American community that has very little to do with racism. Joshua Thompson says it himself in the video, there is a lack of respect for the consequences.
It's has everything to do with generational racism
@@icemike1 Explain, please. We can keep using that as an excuse and nothing will change, or we can look at some of the actual underlying reasons and hope things get better in our lifetime.
@@Max-ve5tu that's no excuse racism is one of the underlying reasons
@@icemike1 what does black people killing other black people have to do with racism?? There is a violence issue in the black community and people just don't want to admit it
@@icemike1 But is it the only reason? As I wrote in the original comment, it is definitely a factor. However, I don't believe we will be able to fix anything if we don't consider other factors as well.
Yes, there are parts of this that are personal responsibility and there are parts that are social ills. For example, if a child is literally mouth fed drugs, how is it their fault that they grew up dysfunctional and live a life of purgatory? On the other side, if a man is making money on the exclusivity of drugs, how can he blame society for his troubles when he is literally contributing to that problem?
Because they are not punished and they are encouraged
Absolutely incredible. Call the police evil and racist whenever they use deadly force and then blame them for not wanting to engage with violent crime.
They will always play the victim, this is why many black immigrants from other countries don't have a positive view of African Americans.
That’s how the narrative goes….
“I’m the United States, black people are 12x more likely to be a victim of gun homicide then white people”
Neglects to mention what race is primarily causing the 12x statistic

A married person can still abandon the child. There are a lot more factors at play
@@planckismus Excuses and lack of morals... Your mindset created this
That's by design and created by the US government. Social programs meant to help Blacks award single parent households and punish families with dads. In addition, the in 1960s, there was an astronomical jump in the rate of Black men going to prison. The jump is because the US government wanted to destroy the Black family structure by removing Black males. The jump was not natural as such a jump could never take place naturally.
Well said. I couldn't have said it any better. And the worse part is it's a never ending cycle. I mean how long are they going to blame slavery for.
I'm from a lower income bracket, no parents, 20 years old black-hispanic no matter how broke I was I never turned to robbing nor dealing drugs, I could have. To all those gangbangers that had a better opportunity than me, these are just excuses.

110% that goes for anything and everything if you are 110% determined to do something your gonna get it done no matter what it takes.. But the point is that the system was designed for black people to fail they shut down almost all the schools in the getto in Chicago and if you dont have a high school diploma you cant go to college and their is very little jobs in the deep getto’s and I mean very little. This is a setup system to try make black people fail* its been going on for decades** Its very easy to see!

Most people who use that phrase "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" don't realize where it came from. From the great depression. Its actually sarcasm towards the idea that poverty is self-inflicted or self-correcting. Think about it. How does one pull them self up by bootstraps? You need another's help in order to be picked up that way. Its physics. Put those pea brains to use and realize human beings have never solved problems on their own. We're weak vulnerable creatures. Snap a couple vertebrae off our spine and we're just a flopping sack of meat. There's no exceptions for that. We have no superman. Regardless of what you have done with yourself or your life you could become dependent on others just that fast and you'll be mighty grateful for healthcare services and benefits then.
This is mostly criminals killing other criminals. Sounds like a problem that's taking care of itself.
I'm not surprised they NEVER discuss the true root cause of crimes.... The sharp rise in single parent households... 50% in general population. 80% in black communities

In Philadelphia, PA.. the homicide rate went up 40% from 2019-2020 then up nearly 13% from 2020-2021. Comparing 2019 to 2021, homicide has gone up nearly 60% and 2020 appears to be on the same track as 2021. That's pretty insane...

So true . And it’s sad to see our country destroyed minute but minute.
So what's the plan to fix it?
No dude, the 3rd factor is not guns, it’s decriminalization, prisoner release, budget cuts, etc. We need to build more prisons.
All this video was about was providing a scapegoat for all those who committed crimes and blaming the increase on law-abiding citizens who purchased additional guns to prevent the criminals from committing additional crimes. The guns were only bought because police were not supported and people have to
defend themselves.

Offer those young men a job working out West planting trees, building wing dams and boon covers on trout streams. Send some money back home to your family. Feel a sense of self worth.
