It’s laughable to blame the "pandemic" and guns. The problem in America is a generation + of people growing up with no discipline or consequences, and being taught to have an outright disrespect of the law. The Economist missed what I think may be one of the largest factors driving crime in Chicago, and that is online learning. I have heard from teachers in Chicago that tons of the students who typically struggled with attendance pre-pandemic completely stopped attending school all together when they were doing remote learning. For lots of these kids if they aren’t in school they are getting into trouble. That means they were getting into much more trouble during remote learning, leading to the crime spiral it’s dealing with now.
That’s a big factor for sure. Things changed so much so fast, it was a scary paranoid ominous time, anti police riots, serious pressure with people loosing jobs and spouses and partners, not enough steady relief from government, a few stimulus checks here and there it was so unreliable and just chaos
@@mobilusinmobili8321 the exact same population demographics of Qatar elsewhere don’t yield the same results. Qatar is much richer and that’s likely a major reason for the low crime rates.

The Economist would be better than most left-leaning publications at hiding the reality, but it's exactly what you mention and it never winds up any other way. Thus Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, San Franscico, Seattle to name just a few have been made unlivable in an instant. You can always spot the liberal with their deflections. Here in Philly the shooters and victims are getting younger and younger and they predominantly come from single parent households with no positive father figure in the home.
How about the criminal element actively recruits the younger people because they won't face the same consequences and the younger people don't have the emotional development to understand what they are doing. These shooters don't just decide to get a gun and go get 'em, someone gives them a gun and points them in the right direction. Just like in Africa and the rest of the world.
The Economist being dishonest with the thumbnail? Not a surprise, homicides with long guns aka ARs are the lowest number of all. Gun violence is primarily pistols and easily concealed weapons
First priority is to admit that most of the crime are occurring in specific neighborhoods, in specific cities, by a specific racial group. How do you reduce crime when most criminals have been raised either by a single mom or a grandmother? Quality education does not exist, poverty is all around, politicians could care less, and over 400-500 million guns are in circulation.
I'm curious, who are you looking to blame? What specific "racial group" do you feel is responsible for gun violence? "400-500 million guns are in circulation" is your problem, and they are in everyones hands.
@@constructionzonebc2295 Don't play dumb. Look at that stats for which "racial group" he is referring to. Politicians in this very same high-crime rate areas have decriminalized riotiting, shoplifting, drugs, petty theft, muggins, and even carjacking. It's a free-for-all in most of these radicalized cities. With no police response due to defunding by "progressive" politicians, police no longer respond to 911 calls. This means LAW-ABIDING members from the same "racial group" must protect themselves. They do that by buying a gun to stay ALIVE in a city with no law and order. You blaming INANIMATE guns is the typical response from the very same "progressive" who don't want to kick the hornet's nest because blaming criminals who are predominately from said "racial group" would be racist ... and voters don't like racist politicians, even if they too have the same skin color. Everyone says George Floyd is a hero but these are the same people who completely ignore that fact that Floyd was buying cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. That he was in and out of jail EIGHT times for drug possession, theft, trespassing, and assault. He spent most of time in jail in Texas where there IS law and order and LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of guns. A lifetime felon and grifter couldn't handle law and order like that so Floyd moved to Minneapolis where he figured he'd get a free pass. But, it took one bad cop to put an end to that fantasy. Floyd would have died young either way as most felons do. Had Floyd stayed in Texas, he would have likely been shot dead during an attempted burglary ... and the homeowner would have likely got a pat on the back by the local police chief ... despite the fact that the homeowner and the police chief and mayor of that city in Texas would all be in the same "racial group" as George Floyd. If you don't believe me, then look up the demographics of Houston, Texas, where Floyd lived.

The level of distrust between the police and the very community they are tasked to protect is very concerning. These CRED guys are heroes for stepping up. I have to say, this analysis feels extremely thin. No mention whatsoever about socioeconomic factors like inequality, worsened by the pandemic, and how it's contributing to increased crime. Rather ironic coming from "The Economist".
Democrats know they can get voted in by creating that distrust by claiming racism is everywhere. So they feed this to clueless citizens nonstop, while filling the heads of children with CRT, which creates lifelong anger and distrust for black kids, as well as a ready excuse for their own bad life decisions.
They like to blame guns but I've never seen a gun jump up and shoot someone all by itself. Look at the leaders of these high crime places and you have your answer.
Tbf the same is true for the opposite argument, I've hardly seen an ordinary citizen shooting a gun in a country where guns are not available. you need both gun and men for gun violence to happen. remove one of them and gun violence gone. but in country where guns are already so widespread I find it useless trying to get rid of them.
@@Kremithefrog1 If you have an ineffective government, you can win the right to do just about anything if you're in the socially powerful group. That doesn't change the fact that ease of access to guns and lack of oversight into who gets to have them plays a role in translating and magnifying the impact of other socio-economic factors into crime and gun violence. The fact that any conversation with gun 'rights' activist on the impact of lax gun laws on gun violence is put to an end with "It's my right" speaks volumes about how they don't have any meaningful and logical argument against the topic or perhaps that deep down they also know that there is a relationship between lax gun laws and gun violence.
This report can't keep its story straight. It claims the surge in legal gun ownership is responsible for the spike in violence then later says that a small percentage of criminals (who are prohibited from owning guns) are responsible for that violence. So which is it? The use of violence interrupters is not new. Previous efforts in Chicago were disbanded when they were infiltrated by gangs and used their status to carry out reprisals on rivals. And one more factor, too many abuse of power and abuse of authority done by corrupted law enforcer, people not only didn't trust them, but people start hate them.
Violence and conflict are unusual commodities. The value of demand increases along with the increase of supply. So those that have a power/profit motive in violence and conflict would certainly be at the core of this "sticky" problem.
Violence is one way of establishing identity. Many gangs require shooting or stabbing an innocent to join. The more dangerous you are the more societal credit you get in these democratic communities.
Majority white people for homicides and crime. All the mass shootings are done by right wing loons. Also I would say its the easy access to guns that's responsible.
This video article does not go deep enough into the problem. In addition to what was mentioned, violent crime has escalated because of a lessened police presence fueled by retirements and getting qualified cadets onboard. Police are overwhelmed by the profuse number of police reports and only show up for the most serious of cases involving gun shots or reports of violence involving guns. Police don't want to assume liability so they do nothing in most cases, only refer citizens to file complaints online. Lawmakers have lessened punitive measures towards criminals and underaged youth who are often set free with no repercussions. Store owners often don't report crime since any inordinate number of losses would increase their insurance. Criminals seem emboldened and now it has become a trend to follow citizens wearing expensive jewelry home where they would commit a robbery or home invasion.
The rest of crime went down.... The hate and disrespect by the GOP is a huge part of it. The divide caused by Facebook and Cambridge analytica (who also manipulated Facebook to divide and spread misinformation which was the only reason Trump or Modi were elected.)

It all comes down to limited resources, generally most criminals are poor and as we see large cities have waves of homeless people. We need to loosen the boundaries on employment to help the homeless people and replacing them with immigrants that work hard is not the answer

For lots of these kids if they aren’t in school they are getting into trouble. That means they were getting into much more trouble during remote learning, leading to the crime spiral it’s dealing with now.

@@Kremithefrog1 If you have an ineffective government, you can win the right to do just about anything if you're in the socially powerful group.

Media isn’t covering the increase in violence in these cities and local neighborhoods. Seems rather odd.
There too busy looking for raciest slights ...Oh Look what this person did. B sure to watch the news so U too know whats being said.
Uh, just because the farm report where you live isn't covering it doesn't mean the media in general isn't. Try any network national news (yes, including FauxNews) and I guarantee there was at least one story on this specifically in the last month.
@@citylumberjack9169 umm I live in Dallas, which is kind of a big city. Local news covers local items, big media aside from Fox, minimal coverage unless it’s in a political favor.
@@christerry1773 Umm, I have a bet that says you don't actually live IN Dallas (more like Plano or another burb). And I would suggest trying KERA for your local news and NPR for national; both have stories on violent crime recently.
@@citylumberjack9169 Plano. I guess I’m not making it clear enough. I’m like about the large liberal media congerants. Msnbc, CNN. Those and those alike are going to blame everything from conservatives, gun control
Laws, to climate change…in order to
Deflect from the fact that are all partially responsible themselves
The amount of illegal and legal guns is increasing each year. This cannot be ignored and expect there won't be consequences. Also the drug trade creates the incentive to use violence. A new approach is needed but those in power really don't care ... after all it's mostly black on black violence. Also Police procedures need reform but there's no discussion on this issue ... just more violence.
guns arent the problem left wing policies places with more guns have less crime. The more people that own guns the harder it is for criminals break into cars and houses because instead of being recorded on a smartphone they get shot or detained by a concerned citizen. Then they get sentenced to 7+ years. while in chicago or sf they get a few weeks in county jail.
This isn't a gun issue, it's a people issue. I own a gun and would never use it to harm anybody.
@@PhantomCookie87 Unless you have an emotional breakdown and lose your mind .. then anything can happen and there lies the problem ... the guy buys a gun but nobody knows what going on in his head ...
Any corellation to who was in Washington in charge of gun control?
It's almost like having over 300 million guns in one country is a bad idea lol
Firearms keeps the peace against thievery, murders and nefarious criminals. 2nd A comment.
Doesn't explain why crime is down in Miami and up in places like Philly ...compare the two mayors....what do you see???
@@grimtooth5358 carrying a firearm doesn't prevent you from being caught by a stray bullet, mistaken hit, or drive by. Neither does it prevent you from being jumped in the night by a group of armed thugs. Sure, you feel a bit safer but when everyone is armed, you aren't actually safer.

Life has no meaning for those whose existence has been commercialized by the system and when they can't validate their shallow pretentious sense of self they lash out with extreme violence for recognition.
The executives of gun manufacturers are like 🤷♂️
What are they supposed to do? They sell firearms legally to people who have passed a background check, so why is it their problem? Why isn't law enforcement doing their job? Why aren't DAs prosecuting the violent people commiting crimes? Why isn't the ATF cracking down on illegal firearms on the streets?
It's not their fault. There are countless responsible gun owners. There's just certain communities that love violence and it's a part of their culture.
I’m halfway through the video and it still hasn’t explained who’s most at risk for committing gun violence. Seems like clickbait.
in my humble opinion ISOLATION is the problem in America, and as an urbanist, this is caused by suburbs.
Let the people build their own neighborhoods, organic, as every healthy country in the world
Maybe. Tokyo is the biggest mega city in the world , and has a staggeringly low rate of violence.
Lol It's the fault of the suburbs? Uh huh, ok.
I'm an urbanist, too. I lived in Central Europe; came back to the U'S and asked ;what are we doing'?
Completely avoided mentioning the Defund the Police movement even once, let alone try to analyze whether there is any correlation or not. Wow, what professional journalism.
Still less than the US in the late 80s. But that fact doesn't sell the news.
Nice. Always compare the stats
@@MrKongatthegates Gun stats only seem to work if they support a pro gun argument but somehow are always misleading if the opposite. It's called cherry picking and people should know better when having debates.
@@Fuzzle1985 It's lower than the 80s, but it's still high. I don't consider 14,000 black people dying in 2020 due to gun violence a thing to celebrate as "lower".
More guns than people.
If a society creates a culture like that, something is fundamentally wrong.
The fascination with firearms in the US is baffling.
Googled. The U.S. Guns & Ammunition Manufacturing industry is worth $19.5 billion. The U.S. buys at least 20 million guns each year (6 for every 100 American citizens).
And?

Only $19B? Way too low we need to get those numbers up
1 - drug use.
2 - more aggressive reporting of events so as to raise awareness. Of crime goes unnoticed until the media decides to cover it.
3 - mental illness consistent with "mainstreaming" individuals once residing in facilities out into communities.
4 - inconsistent background checks on firearms purchase and ownership. and the reporting of individuals who may display behaviors to preclude possession of firearms so that they "fall through the cracks" of the system.
5 - the culture - and this is a big one.
Moral of the story: firearms have been around for a long time. Yet gun violence and especially mass shootings is a fairly recent phenomenon - so what changed??? A large component is as noted above with the missing feature = a culture which glorifies violence in the form of video games and movies. Ask yourself what movies today are "blockbusters" and more often than not they are ones which depict violence. Think about it. 🤔

Defund the police?
Rise of anti-police rhetoric?
Rise of lenient DAs? No cash bail?
It spiked in American cities, but in the rural/suburban areas. We are all fine. BTW, these are all DEMOCRAT ran areas where they voted to defund the police
Wait what ?! More gun sales had a direct correlation with the use of guns and correspondingly murders ?! Who'd have thought
Only in democratic controlled cities.
insecurity and incompetence of police + thousands of criminals being released = regular people start buying guns to take their safety into their own hands
@@Ivan-bk9xs For sure. I'm not pro or anti gun I'm just saying that more people purchasing them increases the chance of them being used.
@@diegonavas6167 You're scared of Americans using their civil rights?
@@grimtooth5358 Can you definitively say that the availability of guns has no impact on the homicide rate? We all know it does. It's certainly not the only cause but it's pivotal. If someone has a gun in their possession they're far more likely to have the confidence to confront someone, to rob someone, to threaten someone and of course to use it. In no other western county with a stable democracy and functioning economy do the same level of gun crime occur. If you've ever left the USA and been to places in France/Germany/UK the same levels of poverty and discrimination exist yet these countries don't have the same level of gun crime. The only difference between them - gun rights.
What is critical is to rebuild the trust between the police and the communities that they are charged to protect and serve. Rhetoric suggesting an unbridgeable divide between movements such as Black Lives Matter and law enforcement only serve to fuel that distrust.
