- Topanga Canyon is a gateway for cyclists from LA into the great hills of Malibu. The land there is beautiful, and the culture is unique. Ben Foster was Phil's regular training parter for a few years until he moved away, but he returns for a nice ride and a tour of his old neighborhood. If you're visiting, Topanga can be heavy with car traffic so I don't recommend it. It's not a great ride in itself so let this video be your tour. Head up Fernwood or onto Mulholland from there instead.

My former home of 10 years, you passed right by where I lived, and worked. Then at the end, you finally reached my all-time favorite climb in the Santa Monicas - Fernwood. That route, on up to Saddle Peak, is glorious. I met and took a photo with Floyd Landis at Saddle Peak. In fact, two days after that day he announced his retirement from professional cycling.

Laurel is pretty sketchy to ride the traffic is pretty fast and wheel grabbing gaps in the road.

The Topanga area is the best hidden jewel for cycling, I ride twice a week there. Definitely mimosas iced coffee and their bacon burritos are really great if you need food. Find me on strava under Manny Perez.
It's amazing how fit Ben is, considering he doesn't ride as much as he used to. He can talk normally even when climbing.

I lived off old Topanga in the ‘80s when there was a huge downpour and the creek flooded the road and that boat, well it might have been briefly useful.
