I saw a 108 shows between 1978 and 1995. I'd follow the northeast tours in the fall and spring, catch six shows in ten days. You had no idea what to expect from night to night and the band usually delivered a memorable experience. Even on an off night they could all of a sudden get in a groove and do a rendition of The Other One or Morning Dew that rocked you to your soul. The blessing to us now is the vast legacy of concert videos available so we can experience again and savor the nuanced notes Jerry and the boys gave to us.

Jimi this is classy. At one of my final shows in Albany 95, I cried at the end of So Many Roads, I realized Jerry was saying goodbye. I mail ordered for fall tour a couple of weeks later, the day I got my tickets for six nights at the Boston Garden, I sighed and said "I hope he makes it," to myself. He died the very next day.

You know I'm counting Back The Years and I remember the day the Jerry Garcia got busted on the turnpike and I realized that I had seen the bust I was hitchhiking back to New Brunswick from Baltimore and in the ride up north I saw some staties busting some guy in the car I think it was a Cadillac and I find out that that was Jerry Garcia being incarcerated 4 suitcase full of Goody's who would think all these years later that all that stuff would be considered healthy good for the mind the soul the knees and everything else under the sun

First saw Jerry in 1969, and have been walking in his footsteps since. Always at least a little light shining, even at the darkest moments. What I love about this compilation is that is shows how much Jerry enjoyed being human. No splash, no flash. Just a long draught of the real deal. Thank you for sharing!

I've been a fan since 87 but since I started playing Bass, about 6 years ago, I've immersed myself in everything Garcia. So Many Roads was the tune that I listened to more than anything. Watching Jerry's expression and positivity as he belted out the last Verse, especially finishing... Soul... the crowd goes wild and the connection is secured.
      Rock On Jerry.. Rock On.

In a bad mood they can reorient your mind and outlook completely. So glad so many people come here to emphasize this part of themselves.

So I was watching this video for the first time (incredible job btw), and when the Visions came on I was just floored... blown away. I was there. One of only 6 shows I was lucky enough to make it to. I saw a few in '89 when I was really young, and it took me a few years to mature to what was going on. Once I did though, it was so special. Me and a few of my friends drove down from Boston and we were literally like giddy school childeren. I remember one of my friends kicking a football we were tossing around up on the elevated highway that kinda curved over part of the parking lot. I was just old enough to start devoting my time and money to following The Dead, and so I was. I saw a few other shows this spring, but this Spectrum show was always the best. The Iko-Iko had the old building rockin like you wouldnt have believed, and then, a bit later.. this VOJ. I remember it so clearly and it was just as wrenching then as it is now (knowing what we know). As soon as I got home I ordered my tix for the Summer with a bunch of shows at my beloved Boston Garden. I must have known sonething was up because I just felt like it was too good to be true.. And then.. it happened. I was awoken by a phone call and was given the news that Jer had died. I hung up on him saying "dont fuck around like that". When the phone rang right back, my heart dropped. I ran to the TV and saw the news. I was overwhelmed and cried like I have only once or twice in my life, and to tell you the truth, at the time, I was a little freaked at the depth of my emotional reaction. However, even as I cried, I realized it wasnt because I wasntngoing to see Jerry of The Dead again. It was for what was lost that day, what we all lost. I cried for the girlfriend who was supposed to go to her first show that summer. I cried for all the future Heads who wouldnt get to experience a moment like my VOJ. I cried for all humanity for losing such a , unique and beautiful soul who had touched millions throughout the years.. I cried.... Thanks so much for this.

Some people wondered about the title, "Jerry Wept". For me, it meant simply that these were some songs that expressed some sad feeling, which he expressed through his playing and singing. Certainly, that he played them all toward the end of his time with us increases their emotionality...thanks Jim for a truly great compilation!

They had got to me early and never let me go.. You certainly found them, the examples of "IT" gems from the 90's & I enjoyed every one! THANKS!!

  •  8 лет назад +4

Thank you, SO MUCH, for that! Funny... about the comments about copyright. It's so obvious that this was just an act of love. Funny how this comes to me "new" five years later via the youtubes. I don't have an old story from when I saw Jerry because I never did. But right here, right now, this was just the perfect thing to come to me in the momemt. It's hard to explain how uncannily relevant Jerry's music (and others, but especially Jerry) can be to your emotion and experience in the moment... out of the blue. Strange, and moving when it happens. I would venture that someone who was there to experience Jerry's presence first-hand for a performance might claim that there was a palpable "magic" present in those moments that could not be bottled. But it's not true. Something about that magic is connected to "the moment", in a way that penetrates through to something timeless. And present. Sometimes, very much so, in THIS moment. Not just the music and lyrics, but also the interview clips you threw in had relevance for me. It can make your head spin. How can you apply logic and reason to the experience? I guess that's why it feels somehow mystical... because you really can't explain it. But there it is. And, I will tell you... that magic, whatever it is... is healing. Great stuff, man. Again... thanks.

ps, june 19 th 1991 , was one of my favorite post brent shows , and favorite shows period , super late taking the stage summer tour giants stadium, the norm was first set usually ended just at sundown, well no band as of 9pm pitch black ,,,,, good things came to those who wait , the band came out smoking from opening to close and for the first and only time opened a show with eyes of the world , big bear ,was animated beaming dancing and feeling like rocking , i think hornsby had recently gone to the press about some nights the band just mails it in ,,, and nobody plays hoops with me at the ymca on tour , and other goofy shit , well jerry took the student put him on the hot seat , and blew bruces little mind , not letting him off the hook the sheepish grin on hornsby face is priceless , and you can actually see a dunce cap manifest for a split second or two , butt the great pthing is awesome videos and audios widely available for this show , 06/19/1991 the whole show is awesome but for the 25 year anniversary a few days ago watch the complete eyes opener when you have a moment to enjoy , sorry if im preaching to the choir here as i probably am , but the multi cam videos that exist was broadcast on national television for a series called in concert, hope your still seeing some live music doug, and your nice reply made my day , might try new riders of purp sage in philly friday , and might try to make starlake amphitheater july 7or 8th i think in burgettstown pa . for dead and company , who have been turning quite a few heads , and converting alot of critics anyhow hope all is kind lovely and peaceful and safe my brother

It's always heart wrenching for me to see Jerry at the end, especially this particular So Many Roads. The man I idolized and loved dearly during my youth, near the end and so very tired and frail. The music of the Grateful Dead provided the lions share of the soundtrack of my life, but it was always Jerry in particular who touched something deeper. He left us way too soon. In his absence we have his legacy of music, but it pales beside the man himself. RIP Jerry and thanks again.

Jerry wept through his fingers on the keyboards, we wept and sometimes still weep as our loss manifests itself in ways we never imagined...Even though his voice cracked with the years, it seemed his fingers remembered every jam that didnt quite work, every errant note that lingered too long and in the 90's his fingers were already knocking on heavens door playing the music of the angels...RIP friends!

I've been on a pilgrimage, kinda. I've been rediscovering Jerry and it's like new all over again. So many shows I missed. After experiencing Jerry Day a few years back, I realize all I missed.

Nicely done. I especially like the beginning when Jerry says he'd like to be remembered as a competent musician. You have to admire someone that humble, especially when you're one of the greatest guitar players of all time, if not the greatest.

I shared this on FB tonight because you have really captured what made Jerry so special. He certainly did weep when he sang and played. That So Many Roads in Chicago was just so special. It brings tears to my eyes to listen to it. Perfect.

I can't stop watching this. Lovely collection. I've gotten to the Standing on the Moon which I have to say was one of the most memorable moments for me seeing the band live. We had seats about 14 rows back which was nice. Aside from the weirdness of interpersonal stuff that day, that was a special day and show. Thanks for this collection!

Thank you Wheatskins! I still maintain that it wasn't a guitar that Jerry played but a six-string magic box. I can see where he says that each note has its own distinct color.

I got genuinely teared up at the end during So Many Roads - I'd heard the footage before, but seeing him just wrench those notes from his voice and just soar, well...let's just say there will never, EVER be another Jerry Garcia.
