    I was just there for a Milwaukee Wave game the other night and was dumbfounded that I actually saw a weekend of Dead shows in that tiny place. I guess officially it can seat 12,700 people but it sure seems smaller than that.

      Ha, go wave and I do remember how crowded and how impossible it was to cross the streets to get to the mecca those 2 days. Never again did they come back to this venue.
      Love from the 414

    My run was Spectrum 86 to RFK 95. Around 100 shows, 26 JGB shows, 2 Garcia/Grisman shows. People say "Wow, that's a lot of Jerry! You were lucky" I say, yes, I was insanely lucky. But enough of the Grateful Dead is never enough. Thank you Jerry

      alpine shows always had a magic to them. it might be that overhead lattice of timber that reflects their energy so well there. plus the tilt of the stage is dizzy and if u ever go there u can almost feel the imprint the dead left there

      LOL! I hear ya! But I’m listening to an awesome “Bird Song” right now. “S Begonias” sounded good too! O the Memories! They were a part of my life, a perfect solution in 80’s disco. Three hours of great music kept the Gibbs away! They just eased into “Fire” , gotta go, I’m missing too much of the show.

      @@jimiamfirshur4778 Aaaooh, I like the Bee Gees. Fallon/TImberlake do a great impression, too. Granted, there is nothing like The Grateful Dead/shows, nor will there ever be again. I'm waiting, for Marty McFly, now, to take me back scuba diving with Jerry.

    Been enjoying their ride for years now, since a high school friend turned me on to how really GREAT they are live, in 1978. when I was a lead singer in a rock band doing Stones, Deep Purple, Lou Reed, Black Sabbath, Led Zep and Bowie covers, etc...and THIS RIDE will NEVER STOP.....now I am 59.....and still, I LOVE this band as much as I did back then.....I listen to them every day still but I hardly EVER listen to the Stones or Black Sabbath any more ( just bores me now)....but still listen to Bowie, DP, Lou, Zep...........but I NEVER tire of these guys....We never did any GD covers, because the 2 guitar players, and the drummer "didn't like" the band.....oh well, you can lead a horse to water but.....you know...I AM SO GRATEFUL to be able to have seen them play 3 times in my life , all with Brent singing and playing the keys , WOW...WOW...WOW....Then I saw Ratdog paly ..1 time, and was disappointed...not the same at all with no Jerry and no Brent......

    A birthday show for me. Sadly, I was a poor college student when this happened. i was working multiple jobs to save money for an upcoming academic year abroad in Austria.
    I did get to see about a 1/2 dozen shows at Alpine valley in the mid 80s through. There was good Terrapin at my 1st show...

  • @jeffjurinek8393
    @jeffjurinek8393 8 лет назад +11

    Wow. Im really just a few months removed from getting into this band (voodoo obviously a big help), but this one seemed pretty good. Loved the fake where the crowd seemed to want fade away, then busted into lovelight. Bobs mic seemed to be turned up a bit too much, lost the low end in the mix whenever he sang. Doesn't matter, that bird song was amazing. Formed a habit of watching these shows in their entirety lately to try and experience it- i was 1 year and 3 months old on the day of this show. The music lives on... see y'all at alpine with. bob and mr mayer

There is no way to pick a favorite night out of the shows I saw, they all were fun and each hold a place in my heart for one reason or another, but this night I had 5th row dead center.....best seats I ever had for a Dead show.

    Milwookie brings out the best in all bands that love to jam, WSP included at The Riverside Theater but The Mecca was very exclusive even though it was where the NBA Bucks used to play back then=Though it was listed on an architecture reclamation website under "gym floor," Andy Gorzalski recognized the pallets of panels as one of the largest pieces of pop art ever created. Growing up in Wisconsin, he had watched the Milwaukee Bucks win many games on that colorful floor, which featured a controversial design created by the artist Robert Indiana was unique= that's why this show is so great, they could feel the energy as could the crowd who were fortunate to be on the floor

    The Pittsburgh shows at the old Igloo(Civic Arena) 2 weeks earlier were nuts.. Tons and tons of energy outside the venue. Police in riot gear were called to restore order..A door opened in the arena from the inside then a few 100 people rushed in without Tix's. The 2 shows that week were great as usual. There was something about Pittsburgh when the Dead played there..

    This tour had a VIBE, more so than Spring 90, which has its own box set. (Spring 89 would need Green Pyramids on the cover. ;0) Saw the Cincinnati, Louisville, 3 Chicago, and these shows. The most fun I ever had? There wasn't a bad seat in this little house. They should have played Stagger Lee every night. Sweet chunky Scarlet Fire. Rowdy cowboy tunes. I can still SEE the t-shirts I bought in the parking lot. One had a twister montage of Dead symbols on the front. The back said "Maybe you had too much too fast." O the N2O. Had a first-gen cassette I wore out. (Had 1,000+ hours on cassette. I miss them. Digital collections aren't as fun.) Widely circulated, this show had a quasi sacred status in the Milwaukee - Cudahy area. At how many parties did I hear it? On how many road trips did it enjoy Front Seat status? Hear the previous night. There are shows on this run that look perfectly harmless on paper (Cincinnati) but proceed to melt your ears. Hear the Shakedown from the first night in Chicago!

    • @joefelice5062
      @joefelice5062 5 лет назад

      Agree 100% about the Spring 89 vibe. I saw the first 4 in Atlanta & Greensboro - everybody was taken with how energetic Jerry was. That first night, he was bopping around on stage like a youngster. Check out Jerry's vocals in Fire on the Mountain from that first night - he is literally announcing to all of us that he is feeling 10 feet tall and ready to tear it up!

    The Dead return to the Arena after being roughed up there along with the audience by the Milwaukee Gestapo in 1980.(lots of arrests for drugs and cops milling around back stage). 1989 brought a new police chief, a new mayor and his wife who were heads.(John Norquist and Susan Mudd). They sat in the 4th row both nights. The cops stood back, no doubt due to the mayor. A mellow scene at one of the smaller venues they would play at in '89

    I was on my way back to Illinois from a church retreat and I heard the boys were playin at this venue, so I figured I'd cut through Milwaukee. Wound up in this little mesinine just above and to the right of Jerry, looking down. Interesting place, right in the middle of town. I remember I was very depressed over a recent divorce, and this was the one time (seeing MANY Dead shows) that the boys couldn't bring me outta my funk. But as I re-listen/watch this video I can see why. They don't really appear to be into it. They must have been depressed too... :-). Luckily there were more shows to come (and a much better wife!!)

    If I remember correctly there was a hassle at the beginning as a big crowd gathered outside the venue. As the show was already scheduled to begin the deadheads started to jostle each other a bit everyone wondering why they were not opening the doors for us. Then cops showed up mounted on horses and things got pretty tense. Made it that much better to get inside. Cheers-

    I remember this. For me, the scene was quite shady. I was pretty shady, too, so it's all good.

      I think we all were shady. Remember the road construction in Milwaukee during these shows making it hard to get to the venues? Bless brother

    This was the first night. I hope somebody has the second night. I was there for both. I don't know if The Mecca is still there or if it has been torn down. Both shows were great. Don't know what else to say but thanks for posting this show and bringing back some great memories. My only question is how the Hell did somebody manage to video tape this? The band had a strict no video taping policy. Oh, well, maybe it's better if I don't question such things, and just enjoy the show, right?

    On a par with the Greek 88's as my very finest shows attended, out of about 150. Thanks V, for posting, and I really hope to go now and find 4/15 (the creme de la creme) waiting for me? Fingers crosssed...

    Hell on a bucket is one way to go down the road and into the lovely scarlet who just always seems to have that match to bring on the fire on the mountain until it just feels like snow and then it feels like a box of rain so you might as well start trucking to the last train to Jacksonville where birtha awaits you this time forever because she belongs to you and you've both been down this road before . She said men are smart but women are smarter so walk with me in the sunshine and let me sing the blues away and mama tried to warn you about how it takes a whole lotta loving if you want that deal to go down and get satisfaction and not feel like a stranger in the promised land or fade away like uncle Charlie or masons children god knows mama tried . I taught u to never trust a stranger unless u meet him in New Orleans positively on forth street playing with the band while me and bobby mgee wake up little Susie and wave that flag and you sing me back home and lay me down and say good night til the morning comes

    I have loved Jerry still after all these years but stopped in 1988 because big Steve parish who thought he owned Jerry told me to stay away from him plus he said he wouldn’t let me in anymore but he had no control over me because I was friends with all of the band members !

      But I did stop going because I was getting tired of trying to b with Jerry more than I was but he was so into his heroin that nothing could make him give it up not even his daughters or his wives ! I was sick of drug addicts so I stopped going !
