I'm a west coast head. Went to alot of shows from '76 til the end. I never heard of this one and I thank whomever it was that put this on the Internet. Great stuff and yeah, the Going Going Gone is a helluva thing. I miss Jerry. 23 years? or some such and I never said that before. Guess its just I miss my old life. Seeing ya'll on shakedown was a great thing. I was never more me than at a show. Got married and raised a family after Jerry passed. Crazy that I chose a woman who never gathered around a fire with a song or a dance. I guess that's too much info and she divorced me anyway. Better than being dead though. What the fuck. Crazy life. Picking up my guitar and putting the rest to song. Would love to say I'll see ya ll on tour .

The only acoustic only solo Garcia shows, I believe. The story I heard is they were called the IRS shows because they figured out all the sudden that nobody had been keeping proper records and he had not paid any income tax and he owed a shit ton of money so he went out and play these shows to make it up real quick like.
I absolutely love when he plays acoustic. I love how he'll just bust into Solo⁸s when there's no other instruments in the background playing accompaniment or maybe it's just a bass. I love that. I do that because of him

I couldn't understand why all of college roommates loved the Dead so much. I wouldn't join them on a couple of late shows because I didn't want to be the only one not doing acid.
In hindsight I should have because my first show wasn't until 1981. Missed Ithaca, Buffalo and a few others.
I must admit I was a bit of a Jazz snob at this point on my musical experiences. Obviously grew up in the early seventies with lots of great rock, then Dylan but I was lost. Probably due to all the bootleg tapes and the less than ideal stereo sound I was used to.
Sorry if anyone has gotten this far, but my first Dead show was almost religious especially my feelings about Jerry. I was blown away. Unfortunately he died way too young 😔
I will say that he's definitely my favorite musician of all time. Love all his solo as well as the JGB and all of his other collaborations.
Thanks for posting this solo treasure!!!

This continues to prove why I regard Jerry as the greatest guitarist ever. Certainly my favorite. I have been playing guitar for over 30 years, and I put Jerry over SRV, Hendrix, Clapton... all of them. His acoustic work was equal to or better his electric work. He also, on electric, had the absolute best sense of melody to contribute with his fills.

I wouldn't say he's technically the greatest by any sense, especially when considering the REALLY great guitar players like Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Tony Rice, etc but Jerry certainly had soul and played with an emotion that very few have ever rivaled. What he lacked in virtuosity he certainly made up for it by being a stellar melodic player that knew how to perfectly emote with his instrument in a way that accompanied his voice so well. He's the perfect example of how it's not the passage/phrase being played, but how one plays it that matters. One will never hear a Jerry lick and think it is anyone else, that's for sure. For that, he's my favorite guitarist.

I was going to 30 or 40 shows every year between 1991 and 1994. I had a collection of over 1000 CASSETTE TAPES and DAT. But THIS show held a special place in my heart. Going going gone... the amazing solo... the way he sings it... it'll make you cry if you're in the mood, haha! The Early show has the BEST Valerie I've ever heard.

When I listen to Jerry, he takes me through the worm hole there to his celestial plane and back again, feeling every emotion along the way. They were hitchhiking on the other side of highway 101. We stopped by a local Alpha-Beta market and there they were eating doughnuts out of the box in the store. The youngest guy who I later realized was Bob Weir, saw I liked the doughnuts and offered me one. Well Years later I realized that the guy who offered me doughnuts was Bobby and the other guys n various stages of long hair were the Dead. So awesome. And yep... It might have worked better for him in a smaller venue, but even by 82 jerry was filling larger and larger venues. Hard to imagine, but even though the Warfield theater in SF seated less than 3k people you could buy tickets outside before the shows for most of the entire 1980 run of GD Warfield shows. $8.50 for floor seats and $5.00 for balcony seats if I remember correctly :-)

I had been wondering if Jerry _ever_ played purely solo. Thanks for posting!
I think that for Jerry, music lived in the connection with the other musicians (and, to a lesser extent, the audience).
In songwriting he always collaborated. Singing in the Dead, in addition to the intense musical collaboration, just about every song he sings has harmonizing vocals. I didn't think that "pure Jerry" existed.
This is a rare treat, indeed.
