Canon's Best Full Frame Mirrorless: The Canon P (2 Minute Review)

- A quick 2-minute review of my favorite Canon full-frame mirrorless camera. Paired with the Canon 50mm f/1.4 LTM, it can go toe to toe with any German-made film rangefinder to date. Not a technical review by any means, just my personal impressions.
Killer looks, advanced film mechanism, 100% viewfinder magnification, aluminum shutter, this baby has it all.

I’ve had this camera for 2 years now, with the Canon 35mm 1.8 and more recently a 50mm 1.4. I use it every day, mainly with the 35mm. I use it with a custom made leather half case from Mr Zhou. It’s my everyday camera, despite having many others, it’s a perfect camera for manual and street photography, with access to great lenses including Leica and Voigtlander, if you want. Or just stick to Canon. I’ll definitely buy another one if for some reason this breaks, but it’s built so well that I can’t see that happening any time soon.
The title cracked me up. So did the line “and unlike modern canons, it featured technology that was ahead of its time”. I defected from to Fuji from Canon for digital work this past September. Got tired of being held back by Canon. But I still love shooting Canon for film. I have an A-1 and an AE-1 program but I wanted a rangefinder for the collection. I ended up scoring this exact camera and lens combo in near mint condition on eBay for $385. I think that’s about middle of the road. Really looking forward to shooting with it, especially for my infrared work where the rangefinder comes in handy so I can see my composition. Love the simplicity and sleekness of the design of this camera also. It’s one of the reasons I switched to Fuji. It’s not enough just to be a good camera. A good camera should be nice to look at as well. With the exception of Fuji, I feel like the aesthetics of camera design has really fallen to the waist side these days. I believe you should never discount the way a camera makes you feel while using it and I think this camera is going to feel he same way my Fuji does
absolutely agree with you. I first got the Fuji XT2. Amazing camera and had all I needed but I kept falling in love with the look of the Xpro2. After shooting with the XT2 for a year, I decided to sell it and "downgrade" to the Xpro1. I've never felt better using it. The images are just as good as the XT2 and the overall aesthetic makes shooting with it so enjoyable. Hoping to pick up the Canon P soon for the same reasons.
The only film Canon SLR's I like are the FTb and the F1. A-1 is much better than the overrated AE-1. Canon's Leica Screwmount rangefinders are gems. Their best achievements. Nikon makes much better mechanical SLR's. Better than even Leica's own. Manual and mechanical for me.
Awesome video and sample photos. Thanks for bringing more exposure to the Canon P! I love my Canon P with the Canon LTM 50/1.4, 35/2.0, and 100/2.0 lenses. Such a wonderful camera.
Thanks for jacking the price up with this video 👍
Dennniiiissss!! You're really gonna make me pull the trigger and buy one....great video bud ;)
The P is sweet, but most (and its big brother the VI-L)have degrading framelines and flare at their advancing age. The immediate predecessors, the V (five) Series have held up much better. Before buying a P I would recommend comparing it to a VL or L-1. Or a L-2, L-3 or V-L2 with some lesser features)
Actually, the P was a budget model by design. Therefore, it does not use the complex projected frames system of the VIL/VIT. Not using the same materials, the P is less likely to suffer deterioration of the frame lines and rangefinder patch to the degree the more expensive models have. I collected Canon RF for many years, but I never got a P because they were always available if needed. Then, the prices on the P doubled overnight, and picking one up seemed uneconomical. Now, the prices on the P have fallen back to be fairly attractive, but I'm no longer interested. IMO, the perfect Canon RF kit: Canon P or VIT, 35mm 2.0; 50mm 1.4, and 100mm 3.5.
The photos shown are awesome!, I'm really considering to get one!
My first camera, bought it about a year ago. Really enjoy using it.
Your video is very well made
If Canon had dispensed with the multiple etched framelines in the finder they would have found even more adherents. Still a great camera for its simplicity of line and indestructible build.
great review! I've been thinking about this camera for a while now.
0:54 best burn I've ever heard 😅
They have developed the EOS R5 as a response to these burns :)
Does it have a meter inside? Btw really nice video, kind of reminded me on mattias burlings videos a bit. Keep up the good work!
Unfortunately it does not
It has a light meter that can be attached to the cold shoe
The Canon 7 and 7s do. Basically a lil more brutalist looking but with a light meter.
Holy shit! I'm sold! Quick to the ebaymobile!
The same price as new? It cost closed to $2000 then adjusted for inflation
spot on - great review!
Canon 🅿️ 😤
Great job. Short and sweet
I just got my mint copy from ebay straight from Japan and it's gorgeous 😫😫😫
No, the Canon VT Deluxe and VL, and VIT and Canon 7 were designed to compete with Leica.M3 The Canon P was the stripped down economy model. It only competed in price, not in features. It was meant to be an economy model sold in America.
My favorite rangefinder is the VT Deluxe.
Great camera ❤❤❤
Was that building at Uc Irvine? Seems familiar.
$200?! You got really lucky for a mint condition at $200.
I'll say.. I paid $400 for mine 😫
Lol I just traded my yashica mat 124 that I bought for $175 for my canon p w/ canon Serenar 50 1.8
To be fair the video is from 2019, but today a mint body w/ lens from Japan will run between $300-$400 plus $35-$40 in shipping.
Nice and informative, like the Russian doomer music too, haha
It is a beautiful camera, that applies to both Canon P & the Canon 7. it's just a shame Canon have not released this in a digital format for the 2020s, I know for sure if this was built now without video just purely a camera I would buy it. After all what's not to like about the design. I only wished some bright spark here in the UK would take the plunge and build something a beautiful as this I'm sure heads would turn as it's such an iconic design whether it be Leica or Canon's original copyright someone must be able to produce a camera just as good , forget Fuji as they have gone down the route of producing a camera/video! so for me they have removed themselves from the camera enthusiast market.
got mine
am in love
Very cool, but now an over-aged selenium meter, and most of them do not work (properly) now. One of the very new, tiny meters which slip into the accessory shoe are a better utility. I have two of the Canon meters, one dead, and the other working fine the last time I checked some 5+ years ago. Seriously, if you are going to actually shoot the camera, get one of the new meters if you need one on board.
I can't find a single Canon P with lens for anywhere near that price. they're all around 1000 AUD on ebay
Hate the shutter speed dial on it though
No need to have Leica M film when you can used the Canon P . I had most the Leica M film and sold them all and never regretted , today I’m using my Canon P and my canon 50mm 1.2
Do you sell it for $250?
Your P is crazy crisp
The shutter is better than a Leica.. it’s made from stainless steel not cloth
Does it have an aperture priority mode?
It is a fully manual camera, so no it does not
No not 95%. More like 99.999999%
cant get it for 199 today
thepatahtumbuh I still see some decent-looking ones in that price range on eBay... usually without a lens, though. For lenses, the 50mm f/1.2 is the most expensive because it's the most cool-looking, but the 50/1.8 and 50/1.4 are better for picture-taking and more reasonably priced. Tip: don't be put off by a few wrinkles on the shutter curtains - as long as the shutter runs smoothly, the wrinkles won't hurt anything, and sometimes you can talk the seller down on price by saying, “Look at those wrinkles on the shutter, bro...” (Flip side: if you find one with perfect curtains, expect to pay a LOT, cause they're rare...)
@@jlwilliams thanks for your response..i have a canon l2..how do you rate it compare to canon P..is it worth if i sell it and buy a P?
I actually bought mine for $100 body only in excellent condition..
Works like a charm
Moronic disturbing soundtrack .
Thanks! Glad you liked it :)
