wow, far too many of these videos prove without doubt that studios/studio execs don't know what the hell they're doing- how did they get their jobs in the first place? whats their function apart from stifling a directors vision?....
They are supposed to help it make money though. Was this niche audience of the comic's humor even close to big enough for that? It couldn't even sustain the Deadline magazine (where the comic was published) through 1995, how could it expect to earn money for a 25 million dollar film? I assume the producers pushed out some of the unique stuff because they didn't understand some of it, and what they did understand they thought wouldn't appeal to a broad enough audience. Without producer interference they may have made a much better cult classic, but I doubt it would have done much better at the box office, which is what the producers and studios really care about.
Studio execs are like the Vogons from Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. They don't think, they don't imagine, most of them can't even spell. They just run things.
Sometimes, and I mean rarely, the producer's cut is the superior version of a film. Empire Records comes to mind as an example where the director's cut comes off as meandering, unfocused, and confused about what exactly its characters are there for.
I saw this movie in theaters with my Dad. We both LOVED it! I was also a HUGE fan of Ice-T at the time (and still am), how often do you get to see the ICE in full costume? This was the only one and he NAILED IT. He was hysterical in this film. This is definitely a lost gem.
Is there an as-it-was-intended edit of it in existence? The main thing I didn't like in the film was that Tank Girl was shown again and again in what was supposedly genuine peril, but this didn't work, because Tank Girl never loses, and the audience therefore knows that she isn't really in peril.
Yeh, thats what I want to see! :) It seems like they cut all the good bits out. The comic was meant to be absolutely insane oversexed filth, and I think they just didnt have the guts to go the whole way...
When I was in high school I showed this to everyone, I practically carried the vhs copy in my backpack to freak people out everywhere I went. Absolutely a classic

This is probably one of the best comic book adaptations I've ever seen. Honestly wish we could get an uncut version of this film. I'd love to see all the stuff that got cut out.

When watching vids like this I can't help but be annoyed at studios that mess with movies in order to make them for a wide audience to gain the most money back as they fail to realise that they will make money from the fans who will love the movie more if its made the way it should be. I also can't help but wish for a time when money no longer exists so that future movies will be made the way they are meant to be made and not to make money. That way they will still make money while pleasing everyone while we'll get the movies we want to see without having to worry about them being butchered to make them more open to a wider audience.
***** I'm actually thinking Edgar Wright would do a better job. He managed to get the offbeat world of Scott Pilgrim to translate from page to screen, I think he could deliver a version of Tank Girl that didn't lose the essence of the comic in the process.
DC-Tiki I think that either one of them would do a great job with Tank Girl. They're both super creative in their movies, and they're also both big enough to convince producers that their ideas would be for the best.
Edgar Wright and James Gunn are terrible choices to direct a remake. The only director who is willing enough to go as offbeat as this movie needs is Taika Waititi
When the trailer for Tank Girl came out, my buddies and I couldn't wait to see it. It still remains a classic in our minds. I would have liked to see a director's cut after seeing this great exploration. Keep up the good work! VIEWERS, if you haven't donated, DO IT!
This is one of my , and now also my childrens , favourite movies. I was fortunate enough to see it at the cinema in one of the two weeks it played in Australia and i fell in love with all the crazy awesomeness and the brilliant Lori Petty. Thank you so , so much for showing people how amazingly bizarre and wonderful this gem of a flick is. Well played GoodBadFlicks. Brand new subscriber right here :)
Best Ever! If I think Tank Girl is Great even chopped up then I'd be over-the-moon with the complete uncut version, still very glad you uploaded this. Thank you so much.
Speaking of A Clockwork Orange - It might be fun to imagine Malcolm McDowell's character is actually Alex in a future where he's run tha planet into tha ground & taken over but also inspired a hero that is equally as psychotic except not evil like he is...not too unlike Batman & tha Joker in reverse| ALSO Well Anyway signing off on a movie like this then dialing back because you're getting tha movie you signed off on is quite literally like jumping off a building but then deciding not to jump "too far out" right before you leap off so you can make it back to tha building in case "something goes wrong" on tha way down|
I have watched Tank Girl at least 10 times, I loved it as a teen and sooner or later hope to get it on blu-ray, shame the studio got so involved. Nice video, thanks for what you do.
Savion Price id never considered that but yeah that would be fantastic! Even without the Scott Pilgrim stuff the way he's done yet corrnetto trilogy is fantastic
Thanks for giving Tank Girl the love. I knew of the comic and saw the movie in the theater. My son had to read the comic in graphic novel form for a class, and I was finally able to read it for myself. I have a copy of the movie on DVD. Sounds like this would be a good movie for a directors cut. I am glad Lori Perry enjoyed the role. Keep on the GoodBadFlicks. I look forward to your shows.
I think someone once said the closest comparison to Tank Girl is Deadpool, at least in terms of humor and energy, but less meta and more loony. Honestly, with DP's success, this would've been perfect to release now, with all the lost footage included. Tho we may never get a director's cut, what we're left with is still a fun manic viewing
"refused to shave her head for the role" - wha-WHAT? Maybe I'm a little biased, digging the short-haired look on women (including myself), but no matter what your taste is, how can you be so VAIN that you can't temporarily let go of your precious hair for an interesting movie role? It's just hair, it grows back! Sure, I was a little nervous the first time I shaved my head because I was afraid my head shape wouldn't just fit it, but after a while I learned to love the look and the fact that you basically have an ever-changing hair style that you can do all kinds of cool new things with.
@@GoodBadFlicks I've just always assumed Harley is heavily influenced by Tank Girl generally. Certainly her post 2011 look seems lifted directly from TG. Worth remembering that Tank Girl debuted five years before Harley Quinn who has only been around since 1993.
@@Djarra While her look later does seem to be inspired by Tank Girl, the Harley that debuted in 1993 was part of Batman the animated series and did not yet have a comic book counterpart. Her personality was initially based on a scene from "Days of Our Lives" in which Arleen Sorkin played a court jester. Comparing that original incarnation to Tank Girl is apples to oranges, so the earlier debut isn't really relevant.
@@michaelroper8448 Harley initially only appeared because the network wouldn't let them have Joker in drag. Otherwise Joker would popped out of the cake himself and Harley may never have existed.
Even with the studio interference, they managed to create a truly special and unique film. Had the creators been given free reign, one can imagine that this movie would have been an epic classic, and probably the best comic-book adaptation ever made.
The exploring videos are the best content you put out by far. I like hearing about films I've never heard of or haven't given a chance and why they turned out like they did. Your regular reviews provide some of this but I honestly don't like the blow by blow plot synopsis you usually do. I'd like the highlights and your input more than an outline of every scene. I dig your channel but have found myself skipping your regular reviews because of that. All that said, I may be the minority.
really enjoyed the movie. i agrees with most fans’ insights that the studio was really the issue and wanting the uncut version to be released. regardless of that i still find it is well worth my time.
Spielburg was too smart to work on this movie. He knew how the industry worked. He knew this movie was CURSED by the reigning patriarchy at the time. Tank Girl was too badass and cool, the mans in charge made sure to sabatoge her coolness any chance they got. Only males are allowed to be THAT badass. Tank Girl wouldn't get passed her comic book coolness. As soon as she tried to step into live action entertainment, the MANS in charge were like "Ummm, no, this level of awesome is reserved for people with penises only."

Edgar Wright and James Gunn are terrible choices to direct a remake. The only director who is willing enough to go as offbeat as this movie needs is Taika Waititi
In light of recent events, this makes me very sad.
When the trailer for Tank Girl came out, my buddies and I couldn't wait to see it. It still remains a classic in our minds. I would have liked to see a director's cut after seeing this great exploration. Keep up the good work! VIEWERS, if you haven't donated, DO IT!
This is one of the times a Redux or Final Cut release sounds completely warranted.
I can see where people would hate this movie, but I like it for what it is.
"Better than Prison" LMFAO
This is one of my , and now also my childrens , favourite movies. I was fortunate enough to see it at the cinema in one of the two weeks it played in Australia and i fell in love with all the crazy awesomeness and the brilliant Lori Petty. Thank you so , so much for showing people how amazingly bizarre and wonderful this gem of a flick is. Well played GoodBadFlicks. Brand new subscriber right here :)
The unused ending would have been a better ending. Too bad the newest release doesn't include the deleted scenes or anything.
Best Ever! If I think Tank Girl is Great even chopped up then I'd be over-the-moon with the complete uncut version, still very glad you uploaded this. Thank you so much.
Speaking of A Clockwork Orange - It might be fun to imagine Malcolm McDowell's character is actually Alex in a future where he's run tha planet into tha ground & taken over but also inspired a hero that is equally as psychotic except not evil like he is...not too unlike Batman & tha Joker in reverse|
ALSO
Well Anyway signing off on a movie like this then dialing back because you're getting tha movie you signed off on is quite literally like jumping off a building but then deciding not to jump "too far out" right before you leap off so you can make it back to tha building in case "something goes wrong" on tha way down|
I still love this film 23 years later.
Lori Petty even signed my DVD copy.
I would love a directors cut.
I have watched Tank Girl at least 10 times, I loved it as a teen and sooner or later hope to get it on blu-ray, shame the studio got so involved. Nice video, thanks for what you do.
they should get edgar wright to direct tank girl.
Savion Price id never considered that but yeah that would be fantastic! Even without the Scott Pilgrim stuff the way he's done yet corrnetto trilogy is fantastic
I loved this film and still do! My dad and I saw it opening weekend and laughed our asses off.
I was a fan of the comic before the movie got announced and came out - and I fucking *loved* it. Despite everything that was done to it.
My entire family & I still loved this movie. I think it's because most everyone involved loved it too.
I remeber I saw this movie on cable when I was like 12 and I like it, it was fun, sexy, and dramatic when it need it, I don't know why is so hated
+Luppercus Because it's not main stream, spoon fed, typical crap.
Unique is rarely appreciated by the majority...
Karstens Creations
yeah but, even critics than normally trash stupid spoons like The Nostalgia Critic hated it, I don't get why
It's primarily due to it being just too different for mainstream audiences...
In other words, my favorite type of flick...;)
Thanks for giving Tank Girl the love. I knew of the comic and saw the movie in the theater. My son had to read the comic in graphic novel form for a class, and I was finally able to read it for myself. I have a copy of the movie on DVD. Sounds like this would be a good movie for a directors cut. I am glad Lori Perry enjoyed the role.
Keep on the GoodBadFlicks. I look forward to your shows.
Oops. I misspelled Lori Petty. Love her.
Is that lolly out of orange is the new black?
Yes!
I didn't realize there were people who didn't think Tank Girl was a good comicbook movie...
Still one of my favorite movies, wish I could see the full version.
hellz yeah!!! my all time favorite movie ever i wanna be Tankgirl when i grow up!
waay better video than the nostalgia critic
Good review :)
One of my all time favorite movies...
Still to this day, lori petty as tank, will always be my #1 crush
Lori Petty kicks so much ass.
I wore out my VHS copy of this film in college. This movie never gets old
I watched this as a teen, damn i had the hots for tank girl
Yep.
Who doesn't?
Oh yeah.
I saw this when it came out in 1995. I enjoyed it a lot - I can't see why anyone wouldn't like it.
Sure, I was a little nervous the first time I shaved my head because I was afraid my head shape wouldn't just fit it, but after a while I learned to love the look and the fact that you basically have an ever-changing hair style that you can do all kinds of cool new things with.
taqu. haha that's why you never hear of Emily Lloyd anymore.
Always loved this movie when I was a kid, would rent it from the video store pretty often!
Anyone else besides me though after seeing this what a perfect live action version of Harley Quinn Lori Petty would have made? XD
theblocksays She would have made an amazing Harley.
@@GoodBadFlicks I've just always assumed Harley is heavily influenced by Tank Girl generally. Certainly her post 2011 look seems lifted directly from TG.
Worth remembering that Tank Girl debuted five years before Harley Quinn who has only been around since 1993.
Well she played a Harley Quinn like character in Gotham.
I still have and blast my Tank girl soundtrack. Love it and the movie, thank you for all this info!
90s chick excellent, thanks!
love this movie where did the balls go of movies
Awesome! Another 'Exploring' video ...I was always hoping you would tackle this unique piece of cinema that was in many ways before its time.
she like the crazier version of harley quinn
I fucking love this movie! I still quote it regularly and I can instantly identify people of quality character when they catch the quotes.
"Roddy McDowell has just finished Star Trek Generations, and was looking to do something ridiculous."
Think about what you just said!
All that said, I may be the minority.
really enjoyed the movie. i agrees with most fans’ insights that the studio was really the issue and wanting the uncut version to be released. regardless of that i still find it is well worth my time.
so its deadpool but for girls in the mad max world
A girl is the main character? must be a movie for girls!
no not Mad Max
more Fallout
or Adventure Time
And the character pre-dates Deadpool
strykerx24 tank girl was the original deadpool
Deadpool relied on bad pop culture joked. This did not and Tank girl isn't for girls it's just a pretty fun comic.
I had this movie on VHS when I was little and I love it to this day, my dream is to have a director's cut of this.
It must be a real trip being you everyday!
@@tigerburn81 you better believe it! whoooaghhhhhh
