I grew up in Russia in the 90s, and the kind of films that you explore like Soldier, Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon, Demolition Man, John Carpenter movies and even Subspecies were my life, as well as th life of many kids who were first introduced to world cinema through those kinds of movies. You can't imagine how happy I was when someone was doing the videos with love and interest instead of put-upon hate and condescendance. As a matter of fact, you even inspired me to do similar videos about similar lesser-known films in Russian. So, thank you again for what you do and keep up the fantastic work :)

Even the final battle he acted out of his training and instinct, not anger, hatred, or any other emotion. He was pretty much acting like a robot, programmed to act a specific way in specific circumstances, devoid of compassion and remorse.

We also see how the other soldier veterans are astounded and flabbergasted by his brand new behavior. Then they return to their normal robotic behaviors under his leadership. This final scene is a foreshadowing of the new possibilities he represents.

I. Frelling. Love. Soldier. It's just an excellent movie. Kurt Russel is amazing as Todd, crafting a compelling and loveable character with, as you say, nearly zero dialogue, and not even really changing his facial expressions, either. But he somehow communicates the vulnerability behind a brainwashed killing machine, someone who is incomprehensibly psychologically damaged by his from-birth military training. His gradual rediscovery of humanity is played perfectly, never losing who Todd is while growing and advancing as a character is compelling dramatic filmmaking. I'll always remember a friend showing me this film the first time, and when one of the old Soldiers is told "You don't even have to salute anymore," my friend commenting "he looks like she just took away his teddy bear." I showed the film to a different friend and made the same quip, and my second friend replied "I think she just did." Profound and nuanced performance makes it a compelling character piece in addition to all the sci-fi action. Honestly, this is an amazing film that everyone should see.

Alien has never belonged. It would have been cool if it did, which is probably the whole reason why there's an inclusion in the first place, but Alien and Predator should drop it and stick to it's own universe.
It's hearing stories like this that just increase my respect for Kurt Russell. That man deserves every ounce of his legend, and then some. You read about so-called superstars being total primadonnas and then you think about someone like Russell, practically the elder statesman of Hollywood, having a work ethic of an absolute warrior... and he still only makes movies he believes in. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
This movie is truly an awesome action film. Nothing in it's context pushes beyond the boundaries of believability, unlike the movies of today, where custom cars are besting nuclear submarines. And the two standout lines Mr. Russell delivers, with spot-on, deadpan effectiveness: "Your men are obsolete." and "I'm going to kill them all, sir." are absolute cinema gold. Thanks for the insider information, I have to get a copy of this film again, mine keep disappearing.
Definitely one of the best science fiction films of well, all films. Kurt Russell is a damn great actor, and is one of my all time favorites. Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, Tango and Cash, are just a few. The man can act and is one of the best there is. I would love to have another 100 years of Kurt. The man is just so cool. Yeah forgot to mention the Escape movies but damn those were so great they don't need mentioning. Hell Captain Ron was fun as hell. Never can get enough of Kurt.

One of my favorite movies of all time. The messaging towards combat veterans like Sledge did at the end of the show "The Pacific" is right there. I have always drawn a direct relationship with this movie and the graphic novel "Rogue Trooper." Such a badass movie

Very under-rated film. Kurt Russell's subdued performance with such little dialogue was perfectly executed. My absolute favourite scene in the film is just after he's been banished by the settlement and is left outside, the look of pain in his face from the rejection is haunting. I also love how when asked how he came to be discarded by the military, he merely replies "I was replaced by a superior solider sir". His honesty and delivery of the line really show how well written the character was.
I saw this gem on the BIG SCREEN when it came out. It is a CLASSIC! Kurt Russell is one of the best in the business. Hollywood needs to make more gritty R rated sci-fi movies like this. Enough already with all of the teenybopper bullshit.

You didn't mention the connection with Jodorowsky's Dune. Was there one? In the documentary about the failed movie, they mention that the start of Soldier and some of the models were taken from the preparation for it. I don't get it. How can movies like Event Horizon and Soldier be bombs? I love them both dearly. Event Horizon was one of the scariest and well done horror movies ever and Russell's acting in Soldier could be used as acting teaching tool. My favourite scene was when she says "You must feel something?" and he answers "Fear and discipline." "Now?" "Always."
I liked both movies too, Event Horizon and Soldier. I always thought EH was a bit soft for a horror type movie (but I still liked it) but until I saw (in these series of videos) that EH was supposed to have harder content for the gore/Hell scenes then it all made sense... god damn studio interference. Blade Runner never really clicked with me but I do like that it all int he same universe as these two others. Makes me hope for the perfect drama/plot heavy (from Blade Runner), action (from Soldier), horror (from Event Horizon) movie will be made that takes place in the same universe. Maybe something like Todd fights the evils from EH on earth after an experiment in inter-dimensional travel goes horribly wrong.
I saw this in the theater as a teenager. It was more subdued than I was expecting, much more of a good story than simply a shoot-em-up, and when I heard it didn't do well soon after seeing it, it changed the way I looked at movies. Usually I liked what other people liked, but I began a separation, figuring out what a good movie is to me, to hell with the critics and audiences. This is a great film, and more like it should be made. We just need to do it cheaply. Keep pushing the B movies, Cecil, you're doing the Lord's work.
I remember watching this multiple times on TV as a teenager, and got a kick out of telling people they should watch the sequel to Blade Runner. Then an actual sequel to Blade Runner came out and, well... I still tell people they should watch Soldier.
Such an underrated sci-fi movie and one of my favorite films of all time. It's a shame it didn't do better. Kurt Russel pleasantly surprised me in his role not to mention how utterly intimidating and bad ass he was. And who couldn't love having Jason Scott Lee in it as well?
Not a bad action flick overall. Who knew so much raw emotion could be conveyed with Kurt Russell's lack of facial expressions or from not saying anything. Just through the intensity in his eyes and through his actions. In this case, actions truly speaks louder than words.
And also the scene where he gets kicked out of the colony, and is holed up inside some wreckage, and all of a sudden he realizes that tears are going down his face, and he's utterly confused, and sad, at the same time.
Wow never knew these existed in the same universe. I think I'd be cool to see some sort or sequel to this with a possible mix with the Blade Runner follow up.
I saw this movie in the day room in jail. It was a huge hit. I expected it was a hit on the outs, too, but when I got out it seemed no one had seen or even heard of it. Such a shame. You could have gone a bit more into the damn fine relationship the film developed between TODD and his adoptive family. Other than that you pretty much nailed it. If only Anderson's earlier, and IMO more genuine, films had gotten the appreciation they deserved he perhaps wouldn't be such a corporate/studio stooge today.
My only problem with Soldier is that there wasn't a sequel showing Todd, the old soldiers and the civilians getting to the Tritan Moons the colonists originally were headed to, and having to defend themselves against other unknown enemies and the elements.
Given the premise, it could also be easily adapted into a video game as well. All that missions Todd and his teammates went through for that 20 years worth a whole campaign.
Mr.Russel is the Goat, The Thing , Big trouble in little China , Escape from Nyc/L.a , Tombstone, Stargate, Soldier , Tango & Cash , Backdraft , Bone Tomahawk etc just love is work .
1) I literally wore out my dvd of this film, one of the VERY few I've had to rebuy due to that reason. 2) I know I've seen this film at least 50-60 times since it was released. I'm pretty sure nothing else needs to be said...lol

Again, like Dredd, NOT a "good bad flick". This is just a brilliant movie. Hugely under-rated, and mostly ignored at the time and quickly forgotten after. But it is pure quality all the way.

I remember seeing this movie as a kid. I still love it to this day. I'm glade that they fought so hard to keep certain scenes in it as it added to the realistic feel to the program. After what would make a better soldier than a soldier who never questions his superiors orders. It really is a great movie.
Bought this years ago, and always liked is a guilty pleasure, so I must have seen it a dozen times or so. Had no idea how many references they packed into his data-card though. More cheeky easter-eggs in that one scene than some films have entirely.
One of the best underrated flicks, along with Event Horizon. I know Solider was supposed to be in the same universe too but had no idea how many more nodes (as in the service medals) there were to other flicks.
I'm really surprised you didn't mention the trailer has this space battle which isn't in the movie. It starts with the weird skeleton floating in space and then like a soap opera space battle.

As a fan of both the Halo game series' stories as well as the film "Soldier," I still wish that full-length live-action Halo movie that covers the "Fall of Reach" book would have been made. I always imagined it would be very similar in a few ways to the beginning of Soldier but less campy.
This was as close to a movie about the Halo games that I could get. And I loved it. It’s been so long since I’ve seen it that this recap was just fantastic. Thanks!
After watching this I had to watch the movie... and was it good. Yes the CGI is a bit dated but very limited, the sets are very cool and filled with Easter eggs. And even though he barely speaks, i really liked Todd as a main character. Thanks a lot for enlightening me on the existence of this hidden masterpiece.
Man, this movie was so well planned, down to all the details: Protecting actors, securing sets properly, and flexible enough to rework the entire schedule when the main actor in an action film tripped during a gardening scene and broke his ankle haha. to me Soldier is the perfect rainy fall saturday afternoon movie. every november when the weather turns here in MN i seem to end up watching it. it is just a solid film with solid acting, and good story telling. it has its faults for sure, but nothing you can't forgive, the pros outweigh the cons.
This is one of the best damn movies out there. Kurt Russell's performance is amazing because so much of it isn't verbal. His character's emotions are suppressed but you read them through Russell's eyes and physical expressions.
This is one of my favorites, too. I own it on DVD and pop it in the player every so often and really enjoy it. Russell is great and so is the whole cast.
This was that VHS in my parents bedroom sitting amongst movies I wasn’t old to watch yet. Then one time when they were gone and my older sister had her friends over I went into their room and grabbed this movie. Remember choosing between Soldier, Speed, Braveheart, Jerry McGuire, and Demolition Man. Will say that out of maybe 20 favorite movies, all 5 of those would still be on the list today.
It has been one of those movies that you get an urge to watch every few years. This was a great narration too. Loved the references in his Soldier BIO. Never caught that.
I strongly agree with David Peoples about Soldier being a spin-off to Blade Runner, the similarities are very obvious. Oliver Harper did a film review on Soldier a few years back and to be honest it wasn't that in-depth like your video, he barely noticed any of the references or connections to Blade Runner. I like the guy but it goes to show nobody is perfect even film reviewers, besides Oliver wasn't that keen on the film anyway.
I loved this film. The soundtrack was great. The weapons and vehicles were very unique and I still remember them to this day. The movie was overflowing with easter egg references to other films.
I remember reading an interview with Jason Scott Lee in Black Belt magazine that got me pumped to see this movie... but it was an old issue at the library and I discovered the movie had already come and gone from theaters. I loved it once I finally tracked down a copy.

I think the "fear and discipline" scene is one of Kurt Russell's strongest acting moments. It's so subtle and restrained, and tragic.

I still feel the Soldier program inspired the SPARTAN-II program in Halo.

One of my favorite movies of all time. The messaging towards combat veterans like Sledge did at the end of the show "The Pacific" is right there. I have always drawn a direct relationship with this movie and the graphic novel "Rogue Trooper." Such a badass movie

Very under-rated film. Kurt Russell's subdued performance with such little dialogue was perfectly executed. My absolute favourite scene in the film is just after he's been banished by the settlement and is left outside, the look of pain in his face from the rejection is haunting. I also love how when asked how he came to be discarded by the military, he merely replies "I was replaced by a superior solider sir". His honesty and delivery of the line really show how well written the character was.
You forget the tear running down his face, and how he has no idea WTF that means.
I saw this gem on the BIG SCREEN when it came out. It is a CLASSIC! Kurt Russell is one of the best in the business. Hollywood needs to make more gritty R rated sci-fi movies like this. Enough already with all of the teenybopper bullshit.
we will probably get more R rated genre films after the successes of Fury Road and Deadpool
There was a lot of these type of movies in the 90’s. We do need more of these kind of hard movies these days.

I have seen it only once and in my memory it was jcvd playing the Role, probably because my memorys of Soldier and Universal Soldiers mixed together XD

You didn't mention the connection with Jodorowsky's Dune. Was there one? In the documentary about the failed movie, they mention that the start of Soldier and some of the models were taken from the preparation for it. I don't get it. How can movies like Event Horizon and Soldier be bombs? I love them both dearly. Event Horizon was one of the scariest and well done horror movies ever and Russell's acting in Soldier could be used as acting teaching tool. My favourite scene was when she says "You must feel something?" and he answers "Fear and discipline." "Now?" "Always."
I liked both movies too, Event Horizon and Soldier. I always thought EH was a bit soft for a horror type movie (but I still liked it) but until I saw (in these series of videos) that EH was supposed to have harder content for the gore/Hell scenes then it all made sense... god damn studio interference. Blade Runner never really clicked with me but I do like that it all int he same universe as these two others. Makes me hope for the perfect drama/plot heavy (from Blade Runner), action (from Soldier), horror (from Event Horizon) movie will be made that takes place in the same universe. Maybe something like Todd fights the evils from EH on earth after an experiment in inter-dimensional travel goes horribly wrong.
My wife and I love that line, too. The “Sir” puts it over the top.

I saw this in the theater as a teenager. It was more subdued than I was expecting, much more of a good story than simply a shoot-em-up, and when I heard it didn't do well soon after seeing it, it changed the way I looked at movies. Usually I liked what other people liked, but I began a separation, figuring out what a good movie is to me, to hell with the critics and audiences.
This is a great film, and more like it should be made. We just need to do it cheaply. Keep pushing the B movies, Cecil, you're doing the Lord's work.

Highly underrated movie
I remember watching this multiple times on TV as a teenager, and got a kick out of telling people they should watch the sequel to Blade Runner. Then an actual sequel to Blade Runner came out and, well... I still tell people they should watch Soldier.
IMO this is easily one of the best action movies of the 90's. Probably #2 for me just under The Matrix.
Such an underrated sci-fi movie and one of my favorite films of all time. It's a shame it didn't do better. Kurt Russel pleasantly surprised me in his role not to mention how utterly intimidating and bad ass he was. And who couldn't love having Jason Scott Lee in it as well?

Not a bad action flick overall. Who knew so much raw emotion could be conveyed with Kurt Russell's lack of facial expressions or from not saying anything. Just through the intensity in his eyes and through his actions. In this case, actions truly speaks louder than words.
And also the scene where he gets kicked out of the colony, and is holed up inside some wreckage, and all of a sudden he realizes that tears are going down his face, and he's utterly confused, and sad, at the same time.
Wow never knew these existed in the same universe. I think I'd be cool to see some sort or sequel to this with a possible mix with the Blade Runner follow up.
I saw this movie in the day room in jail. It was a huge hit. I expected it was a hit on the outs, too, but when I got out it seemed no one had seen or even heard of it.
Such a shame.
You could have gone a bit more into the damn fine relationship the film developed between TODD and his adoptive family.
Other than that you pretty much nailed it.
If only Anderson's earlier, and IMO more genuine, films had gotten the appreciation they deserved he perhaps wouldn't be such a corporate/studio stooge today.
I've always loved this movie.
My only problem with Soldier is that there wasn't a sequel showing Todd, the old soldiers and the civilians getting to the Tritan Moons the colonists originally were headed to, and having to defend themselves against other unknown enemies and the elements.
Given the premise, it could also be easily adapted into a video game as well. All that missions Todd and his teammates went through for that 20 years worth a whole campaign.
still one of my all-time favorites, I could watch the chain fight scene all day!

1) I literally wore out my dvd of this film, one of the VERY few I've had to rebuy due to that reason. 2) I know I've seen this film at least 50-60 times since it was released. I'm pretty sure nothing else needs to be said...lol

The production level was absolutely mind blowing.
Again, like Dredd, NOT a "good bad flick".
This is just a brilliant movie. Hugely under-rated, and mostly ignored at the time and quickly forgotten after.
But it is pure quality all the way.
An underrated MASTERPIECE........one of my faves.......I always watch "BLADERUNNER", "EVENT HORIZON" and "SOLDIER" in one sitting as the movies DO sync up nicely.....thank you for reviewing this neglected gem.
I love this film! One of Russell's best.
I remember seeing this movie as a kid. I still love it to this day. I'm glade that they fought so hard to keep certain scenes in it as it added to the realistic feel to the program. After what would make a better soldier than a soldier who never questions his superiors orders. It really is a great movie.
I love this movie, its rambo in space. Shame it went straight to DvD in the UK i would have loved to see this on the big screen. I still watch it.
Bought this years ago, and always liked is a guilty pleasure, so I must have seen it a dozen times or so.
Had no idea how many references they packed into his data-card though.

Underrated movie
One of the best underrated flicks, along with Event Horizon. I know Solider was supposed to be in the same universe too but had no idea how many more nodes (as in the service medals) there were to other flicks.

All those little details and whatnot are just another part of why Soldier is one of my favorites. Seen tons of movies and I'd say it's around the top 30 or so.

As a fan of both the Halo game series' stories as well as the film "Soldier," I still wish that full-length live-action Halo movie that covers the "Fall of Reach" book would have been made.
I always imagined it would be very similar in a few ways to the beginning of Soldier but less campy.

After watching this I had to watch the movie... and was it good. Yes the CGI is a bit dated but very limited, the sets are very cool and filled with Easter eggs. And even though he barely speaks, i really liked Todd as a main character.

Man, this movie was so well planned, down to all the details: Protecting actors, securing sets properly, and flexible enough to rework the entire schedule when the main actor in an action film tripped during a gardening scene and broke his ankle haha.

to me Soldier is the perfect rainy fall saturday afternoon movie. every november when the weather turns here in MN i seem to end up watching it. it is just a solid film with solid acting, and good story telling. it has its faults for sure, but nothing you can't forgive, the pros outweigh the cons.

This is one of the best damn movies out there. Kurt Russell's performance is amazing because so much of it isn't verbal. His character's emotions are suppressed but you read them through Russell's eyes and physical expressions.
I love Soldier, but then I like everything with Kurt Russell in it.
This is one of my favorites, too. I own it on DVD and pop it in the player every so often and really enjoy it. Russell is great and so is the whole cast.

This was that VHS in my parents bedroom sitting amongst movies I wasn’t old to watch yet. Then one time when they were gone and my older sister had her friends over I went into their room and grabbed this movie. Remember choosing between Soldier, Speed, Braveheart, Jerry McGuire, and Demolition Man. Will say that out of maybe 20 favorite movies, all 5 of those would still be on the list today.

I absolutely love this movie. It was one of my favorites as a kid since I was so huge into sci-fi and dystopian settings.
I strongly agree with David Peoples about Soldier being a spin-off to Blade Runner, the similarities are very obvious. Oliver Harper did a film review on Soldier a few years back and to be honest it wasn't that in-depth like your video, he barely noticed any of the references or connections to Blade Runner. I like the guy but it goes to show nobody is perfect even film reviewers, besides Oliver wasn't that keen on the film anyway.
I loved this film. The soundtrack was great. The weapons and vehicles were very unique and I still remember them to this day. The movie was overflowing with easter egg references to other films.
I remember this movie but never remembered it's name i loved it and now know it's name.
I remember reading an interview with Jason Scott Lee in Black Belt magazine that got me pumped to see this movie... but it was an old issue at the library and I discovered the movie had already come and gone from theaters. I loved it once I finally tracked down a copy.
