This was a movie I randomly picked up at redbox to watch with my dad. I had no idea what the hell it was and just picked it at random. To date, one of the best father-son movie times we've had.
I bought this at the 5$ movie bin at Walmart me and my brother watched it still watch it to this day very good movie crazy party is I started eating more carrots cause of this
I went to see this in theaters the weekend it released. Watching Clive Owen parachute out of a plane and hearing my Mom exclaim "Oh my god, now we're shooting people in the fucking SKY!?" is still one of my most memorable in-cinema experiences.
Jonas Hall agreed!!!if u haven't seen the international I'd definitely recommend it,also he did a series of short films for BMW...trust me,check them out, search BMW films, you won't be disappointed!!
one of the very few examples of a villain whose goofy looks do not undermines his scene presence. giamatti's character was smart, pragmatic, driven and funny. loved it!
100% agree! I loved how Elmer Fudd lost that speech issue(musta been Psychological or somethin') and somehow joined the Mafia....Bugs looks like he's hit Rock Bottom, sad to say.Anybody here know whatever happened to Daffy?...
This movie really cemented my respect for Paul Giamati and Clive Owen. It's a great movie that I could see being of lower quality if not for the great actors involved, and I could easily see how people who had attained their status might see a fun action movie as 'beneath them', and it's great to see them both ham it up with such charisma.
I really dug this movie when it came out and watched it several times on DVD, too bad it wasn't popular enough to spawn a series of flicks. Deadpool lovers would like this one too! I think...
I think if the John Wick movies would've been as violent and insane as this movie, I feel like they would've done 100 times better than what they did, not saying that those movies didn't do well but I'm just saying that they definitely would've done a whole hell of a lot better had they had been as violent as this movie lol
Now that the bizarrely overpraised Craig era is over, with the recent release of NTTD, this may a prime opportunity to dust off the idea of blue collar Bond, It may even have more resonance in the world in which we live today(Western intelligence couldn't put lipstick on the train wrecks of Afghanistan and Iraq, despite throwing several billion dollars at both)than it did in 2007
Sat in the audience at Comic Con when they were promoting this and you could FEEL the excitement in the room. Everyone loved it, especially when they showed the same animatic you did, followed by the actual scene. The movie is a masterclass in action.
One of my all time favorite action movies, and one of my favorite movies of all time. Between the clever use of the soundtrack, the brilliant editing, the incredible cast, the dialogue, it all just plays so well together. The poor reception does not surprise me, as when I went to see it in the theater I was one of only a handful of people. I never gave much thought to the Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd tie in, but then again as much as this is one of my favorites I haven't seen it since it was on the big screen. I recommend this to all my friends, and every one I even casually meet that says they like action films. Definitely an under the radar, hidden gem classic.
This movie is sooooo over-the-top. There are so many "WTF" scenes, with the merry go round being one of the most ridiculous action scenes to put film. SEU is a blast and I recommend it to action junkies. As a bonus, the soundtrack is awesome.
Vastly underrated flick that should not have flopped at the box office. Loved it. Right up there with Running Scared, another film that should have done well at the box office.... yet the 50 Shades and Twilight movies do well. *sigh*
Ya i fukin love the movie aswell however go back and watch the Trailer for it LOL Its hot garbage. It took real effort to turn such an awesome movie into the one of the worst trailers ever made ahaha.
I distinctly remember one of my college housemates bringing this DVD home one night and telling the rest of us "I don't know exactly what it's about, but I hear the main character kills a guy with a carrot in the first 5 minutes". We went on to have a great movie night.
This and Hardcore Henry are the best paced action movies, they are the closest to the best action packed rollercoaster you can get. Once it starts it's one hell of a ride till the end.
This movie was so fucking fun, man. I’m all for movies and shows that are very grounded and serious, but not every one of them needs to be and this was the quintessential example of doing that right. It didn’t take itself overly serious and never pretended it was, and you had a blast being along for the rollercoaster as a result. I wish the director hadn’t taken the disappointing box office performance as hard as he did. It still did alright, and putting that aside he showed he really had a great mind for camera angles and shot composition and the flow of action sequences playing out. Would have loved to see much more from him, but at least we did get this gem.
Shoot ‘em up was was of those films I loved when I was younger but everyone I showed it to didn’t seem to get it! I love how you never know when an awesome battle is about to break out and they always manage to surprise you can keep you thoroughly entertained. It’s just the perfect switch-off-your-brain action movie.
i saw this when its breezed through for a week because i had loved Monster Man and 100 girls. Owen , Belucci and Giamannti are amazing in it. I am going to have to watch watch it again now.
Subscribed the other day and lemme just say this "They decided to take it to New Line Cinema" seems to be the phrase most common with movies I loved from my childhood, love you channel dude.
I freaking LOVE this movie, but I never saw it until I purchased it from a used bin at an old Hollywood Video (f*ck, I'm getting old). To this day, I lend that copy to coworkers and friends who haven't even heard of it, and every one of them has the same reaction "OMG this is so awesome!! How come I've never heard of this movie before?" Shame.
I remember buying this film on DvD because it was on sale in a FYE store when I was looking around at different movies. From my first watch I loved it for basically how ridiculous it was. It's an amazing film that any action film fan should love.
"Well ain't that a bitch... All I wanted to do was to sail my boat, man, you know? Navigate by the stars, see dolphins race alongside, you know, maybe even kill a few of them."
Shoot 'em Up kicked ass. I saw it in theatres back in 2007 and it was amazing. I'll later eventually buy it on Blu-ray Disc over a decade later. It sounded amazing in DTS-HD Master Audio.
My friends and I saw this film as part of a double-showing with Jet Lee & Jason Statham's War. We howled during Shoot Em' Up and by the time we got to War, we found it so incredibly boring, we stopped watching. I'm sure War was a good movie, but after the energy of Shoot Em Up, nothing else could follow it.
My favorite aspect of this movie is the fact that it focuses on guns throughout but at the end reveal that it's actually about gun control. Basically an action shooter that's anti gun.
Oh man, this is one of my all-time favorite movies to show people. I especially love it because they always have the same basic reaction every time. They spend the first half kind of enjoying it, but very puzzled and saying things like "I'm not sure if this is really great or really terrible." THEN the sex scene gunfight happens, and it just *clicks* and suddenly they love it. I'm almost glad that it's a little-known cult classic specifically because it's so much fun to show to people who have absolutely no idea what they're in for.
Okay, so, I've been waiting until I could find the best way to put this, but now I think I got it, so I hope you read this. I'm subscribing to your channel. Not because every video is a brilliant masterpiece that I agree with one hundred percent, but because I DON'T agree with every video. I love these because you defend movies that range from questionable bad to down right garbage. From Brilliant and underrated to respectable and overhyped. You see, I love how passionate you are about these films, you really seem to enjoy them. I don't get that from most reviewers and critics anymore, rather soulless reactions, mindless hate or blind praise. I love your channel for the same reasons I like Doug Walkers 'Honest Thoughts' videos more than his Nostalgia Critic ones- it shows a person just, talking about the ups and downs of a film, the work that went into it, the studio and directors influence, problems with the writing and actors, etc. It feels real, and I need that. I'm currently on the curricular track to writing scripts and storyboard, and so I NEED to maintain balance. I need reviews who I agree with and I need reviewers I disagree with, I need fans and haters in equal measures, because it forces me to look at a film fairly, draw a real opinion and remain capable of explaining WHY I hated the writing of MoS and BvS but liked The Avengers and Punisher War Zone. To be able to point out why despite being a overall BAD film, Dungeons and Dragons is one of my favorites and why, despite the overwhelming hate for it, I feel Fan4stic (horrible movie it was) could have been salvaged instead of being left as it was. Your channel gives me that. Plus, you're pleasant and actually talk about the literal making of the film instead of just the movie (Extra points from me for that). So yeah, I'm in, and hope your channel continues to grow, as I look forward to your next videos. Also, watch Book of Vile Darkness of you haven't already, it feels like the closest to a live D&D game and Verminlord is hilarious.
Thank you for disagreeing with me! lol In all seriousness, I don't expect everyone to agree with me all the time, that would be crazy. I just like to present (in my exploring or GBF videos) movies that I feel either got a bad rap when they came out, were overlooked or were messed up from within. I like talking about what went into these and showing how much work goes into even the "worst" of films. I think too many people just look for people to validate their opinions and are often angry when someone's views don't line up with theirs. I have friends who disagree with me all the time but we are still friends and often will get into (friendly) arguments over a movie's quality or lack thereof. I'm just a big movie fan and love talking about both the good and the bad within the industry, although I try to highlight the good more than the bad. (there is enough negativity out there already) Book of Vile Darkness never got an official release in the US, it only was shown heavily edited on Syfy. I keep forgetting I need to check it out. I really liked that they went and made an all evil D&D movie. Its an interesting angle that never would happen in a mainstream film. I may just import it and watch on my PC since it'll be region locked. Thanks for getting what the channel is and sticking around :)
I've heard tale that the Fantastic Four (2015, aka Fant4stic) failed due to a lack of commitment to the original vision. It's a pretty dark movie, by genre standards (superhero/action), with Dr.Doom's return seeing a terrifying villain boiling people's brains in their skulls - at the very least, people's heads burst open like they've been shot with a hollow point -, our weapons are useless, the lights go out, and a mess of corpses remains afterwards. Where Man of Steel's Superman vs Zod Battle is called too violent, much of that violence was implied by the scale of the destruction, where as Doom's March is almost akin to a Slasher Film with the gratuity of each person who dies. Furthermore, early trailers depicted more mature themes, such as a body on fire that'd reduced it to an ashen husk (as though burned from the inside out), implications that Ben 'The Thing' was in pain whenever he moved, the tortuous nature of trying to hold himself together for Reed. And the studio, the tale goes, got cold feet at the prospect of an R Rated Fantastic Four, dialed it back and watered it down. I'm sure it goes deeper, but anyone who wants to do actual investigation and add further detail to this is welcome to.
I actually love this film. I went into the theaters expecting just alot of crazy gunfights and that was it, and was not disappointed... and then Paul Giamati... easily one of my favorite performances he has ever done.
2:43 Bob Shay once said “Why would anyone In Their right mind make two movies? This is three films.” This was said to Peter Jackson during his pitch for the Lord of the Rings movie. This man knew what he was doing
If all you want is your brain completely shut off in disbelief at the level of extreme nonsensical action, this is the movie, there is no movie that was more action packed into it. The amount of times you just sit there mouth wide open not sure if you should laugh or shut it off is amazing. It's a piece of art and has earned a spot in my top five movies. (In no order) -Strangelove -grindhouse -blade runner 2049 -incendies -shoot em' up
Ended up talking in depth with the director of this film, awesome guy who turned off on Hollywood cuz so few truly got his vision. Very well said here!
You should check out a few other hidden gem films. First is Hardcore Henry, the FPS inspired action movie. Second is Bloody Hell, a movie that takes the Tucker & Dale vs Evil formula of cliche setup + non-cliche result but in a twist the results are more grounded yet funnier somehow. Third is Overlord, the surprisingly good Wolfenstein movie that isn't Wolfenstein.
This movie blew me away when it came out! I went in thinking it was another hyper cut edit style generic shooter movie. Instead I got a well edited gun ballet. Still one of my favorites.
I worked at a movie theater when this came out. lol I love it i spent half my time watching scenes of it as many times as I could. This and Crank are just favorites.
You nailed it about the bad marketing. I remember when this film came out and gave it a miss because it looked so generic and bad. Luckily a friend made me watch it a couple of years later, because it's a really fun film.
This movie is awesome, I just saw it and have been wondering why on earth Clive Owen hasn’t been casted as The Punisher before. He basically nailed it here!
Thank you so much for this well-made research about a great film that needs more recognition.Even Roger Ebert did like this film giving it 3.5 out of four stars and he said "What elevates it from the depraved to the deserving is a sense of style, a sense of warped humor and the acting".
Thank you for this! This is one of my favorite movies and it’s so criminally underrated. A live action Bugs Bunny cursing and killin Elmer Fudds henchmen... what’s not to love?!?
Congrats on having one of the best Channels on the RUclipss. After watching every Good bad flicks I became depressed there was no more. Never stop doing these videos.... 🙃
I love this video. I loved the film already. So to see someone do it justice the way you did here, it's just a joy. If I could only see five films from each decade (not counting Dolph Lundgren movies), this makes the list.
I've always thought this was the best video game movie ever made. Guns as tools feels like quicktime events from fast-paced platforming sections in things like Tomb Raider or God of War, the carrots as an "eyesight powerup" to improve accuracy or notice puzzle clues in the environment, the army of mooks to mow through so you feel like a badass. . .
I was working at Blockbuster when this released to video. I loved it and I spent the weekend recommending it. I had several customers complain upon returning their copies.
This was a movie I randomly picked up at redbox to watch with my dad. I had no idea what the hell it was and just picked it at random. To date, one of the best father-son movie times we've had.
Lol

Jonas Hall

Thanks man! I will check them out, have a nice day Keith!
Check out: I'll Sleep When I'm Dead(if u haven't.)
Thank you! I will.
shoud have been james bond
"Guns don't kill people...but they sure help." Giamati was amazing this whole movie...I have never seen anybody killed with a carrot before. Brava
Jack Frost did it...
Oh, yeah, that's right! I have seen it then. Both totally different, but equally as cool
Corpse feel up, so uncomfortable
That carrot kill was just hilariously awesome.
one of the very few examples of a villain whose goofy looks do not undermines his scene presence. giamatti's character was smart, pragmatic, driven and funny.
loved it!
The best Bugs Bunny movie ever made.
100% agree! I loved how Elmer Fudd lost that speech issue(musta been Psychological or somethin') and somehow joined the Mafia....Bugs looks like he's hit Rock Bottom, sad to say.Anybody here know whatever happened to Daffy?...
He is only in Roger Rabbit for a few minutes
i freaking love this movie!!!
Me too

Saw this movie with friends in the theater. Cried from laughing so hard at this movie.
Please do "The Big Hit" next. It's such a perfect good bad flick.
Dan Peterson I second this. Please do The Big Hit next. Mark Wahlburg & Lou Diamond Phillips were fucking amazing during the video store fight scene.

war was a good movie but i think shoot em up was far better action movie
shoot em up and crank would make a really nice double feature.
shoot'em up has always reminded me of Max Payne as Crank is essentially a Grand Theft Auto Movie.
Kinda like how Country Joe McDonald was a little irked at a music festival once because he had to follow Led Zeppelin.
Thanks so much for Exploring Shoot 'em Up. I love love love this movie. Still don't understand the lack of love for it.

Particularly the scene with falling out of a plane and the preceding free-falling gunfight.

-shoot em' up
I keep meaning to pick that up on dvd/blu-ray, but I definitely remember digging it when I watched it.
Ended up talking in depth with the director of this film, awesome guy who turned off on Hollywood cuz so few truly got his vision. Very well said here!
true one of the best movies ever thanks for the video. props to the director and clive owens!
This was actually John Wick before John Wick. The over the top shooter style was amazing. I don’t think audiences got it at that point.
This was an awesome movie, and you really outdid yourself with breaking down the details here man :)
I just watched this, in 2020. How in the HELL did I miss it until now?!?!
My father took me and my brother to the movies to watch this work of art
This movie blew me away when it came out! I went in thinking it was another hyper cut edit style generic shooter movie. Instead I got a well edited gun ballet. Still one of my favorites.
Clive Owen in this movie reminds me of the Punisher :D He would be a perfect Frank Castle!
Underrated fast paced masterpiece!
Love this film. His quote about blinkers is amazing
One of my favourite films in any genre
I worked at a movie theater when this came out. lol I love it i spent half my time watching scenes of it as many times as I could. This and Crank are just favorites.
You nailed it about the bad marketing. I remember when this film came out and gave it a miss because it looked so generic and bad. Luckily a friend made me watch it a couple of years later, because it's a really fun film.
This movie is awesome, I just saw it and have been wondering why on earth Clive Owen hasn’t been casted as The Punisher before. He basically nailed it here!
I loved this movie, and love it even more knowing all this stuff now. Well done.
owen woulda KILLED IT as james bond
I've sung the praises of this movie AND director from opening day until the end of time! It's FANTASTIC! Great choice!
I love Shoot ‘em Up, it is so over the top and enjoyable.
Just found this movie.... HOW DID I MISS IT!?!?! This is to action what Evil Dead is to Horror.
I loved the lampshade-hanging moment when Giamatti says "Either this guy is really good, or we really suck". Such a brilliant film.
This movie was batshit insane from beginning to end.
Thank you so much for this well-made research about a great film that needs more recognition.Even Roger Ebert did like this film giving it 3.5 out of four stars and he said "What elevates it from the depraved to the deserving is a sense of style, a sense of warped humor and the acting".
Thanks!
I knew nothing about this movie before I watched it.
I was blown away....
Sold! I'm going to go look for this movie right now!
this is a hidden gem, the only Film that comes close hard boiled, great film
Thank you for this! This is one of my favorite movies and it’s so criminally underrated. A live action Bugs Bunny cursing and killin Elmer Fudds henchmen... what’s not to love?!?
Saw this the same year it released (07) as an 11 year old and it has lived in my head rent free since then
I loved the movie. Wish more like it would be made.
Congrats on having one of the best Channels on the RUclipss. After watching every Good bad flicks I became depressed there was no more. Never stop doing these videos.... 🙃
This is not only the greatest movie ever made, it it the greatest artistic achievement in the history of human endeavor. In my opinion
I saw this in theaters with a bunch of my friends in highschool, hell of a good time
love the opening of this movie.
"nice knockers"
I love this video. I loved the film already. So to see someone do it justice the way you did here, it's just a joy. If I could only see five films from each decade (not counting Dolph Lundgren movies), this makes the list.
Thanks!
I've always thought this was the best video game movie ever made. Guns as tools feels like quicktime events from fast-paced platforming sections in things like Tomb Raider or God of War, the carrots as an "eyesight powerup" to improve accuracy or notice puzzle clues in the environment, the army of mooks to mow through so you feel like a badass. . .
Probably one of my favorite movies ever.
Seriously great.
Honestly.. I ONLY want to see Giamati as a villian, he does it better than anyone.
Man, just when I thought this movie couldn't get better, I find out it's the ultimate Looney Tunes movie. Thanks for all the info!
Dang, I need to check this out! Had no idea it was so innovative.
I was working at Blockbuster when this released to video. I loved it and I spent the weekend recommending it. I had several customers complain upon returning their copies.
I love this movie
