I love this movie. It's so insane and balls to the wall. I love the opening monologue because it's basically the writer complaining about Dog Day Afternoon and saying "My script is better!"
Travolta and jackman's performances were outstanding. How can he be nominated for a Razzie. I was a kid when this movie came out and LOVED every frame travolta was in
The big explosion scene at the beginning was filmed in Ventura, Ca. The production shut down our main st for a couple days and filled up my work with trucks. Travolta was by all accounts a nice guy to the locals that hit him up for autographs and whatnot. My band played a club on Main St during one of the last days of filming so we put up a ton of flyers around the area and ended up making a bit of money off the crew coming in to drink after work. If anyone of note came I was unaware and too busy to notice anyway. It was a nice little thrill for my sleepy beach town.
TheKindler As a fan of Travolta is was probably deserved in my opinion. He is a wonderful overactor, and sometimes it works ( Face off, Paris with love) and sometimes it doesn't....here.
km099 that topless scene was so forced and was framed all wrong, don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it, but it could’ve been done so much better instead of a quick fucking flash. They should’ve gotten their money’s worth, cause that 5 second flash sure as shit was not worth $500K!
The topless scene is so underwhelming. Halle Berry is beautiful and her boobs are flawless, but the whole thing is played out in the movie (and the PR) as a BIG DEAL™! and it really isn't. It's similar to her bikini scene in James Bond - Die Another Day, recreating Ursulla Andress's iconic entrence. It's a dud.
Dude.... Travolta is the BEST part about this movie. Compared to most of the garbage they green light, this movie is a brilliant Who-Done-It/ Heist hybrid movie... where the bad guy wins. Seriously...the bad guy wins.. its great!
Your overlooking the most important part of the movie. Who was he working for? The federal government, this is exactly the type of shit our CIA does and I am not joking about that.
@@Donbd83 It's very strongly implied that he is Mossad, not CIA, using the money to commit extrajudicial murder against "known" terrorists. I think tou are meant to feel Travolta in the end is a good guy or at least an anti-hero. Its Israeli propaganda.
I remember, prior to this film, Halle Berry used to tell interviewers that she had nothing against nude scenes per se as long as it was integral to the story and that the only way she would ever do a scene nude, it would have to have artistic integrity. Of course anybody who has seen the film knows exactly why that's so laughable!
I dunno, it makes a little more sense in retrospect. See, yes, it's gratuitous titty, but a large part of her job is to distract Jackman's character so that he doesn't put too many pieces of the plot together - a task very well accomplished by use of surprise titty. Also, given the blowjob audition scene, it's established that Travolta's character likes to use attractive women to distract or otherwise confuse men, so again, random surprise boobs are just the sort of thing he'd suggest Berry's character do. It's not integral to the story, but it is story-compliant.
That opening monologue was one of the best i've ever seen. Hell, that whole opening scene was fantastic. Yes, the movie dropped after that. There were a few good moments. Then the ending was really good too.
Gabriel always caught my eye as a young kid as one of the most believable "villains" in Hollywood. One that did his homework, played everyone as an enemy and a friend, had one person he could truly trust and use them to hook others in, and knew well enough to keep everybody guessing. Him getting away was the only ending that could work, and it wasn't the same "hero" bullcrap ending all to common in filming. A great movie that was way under rated. Plus those were a great pair on holly, for sure.
Well done. Thank you again for all of your research time and effort. I agree that any other ending would have made the film forgettable. I am glad that they went down the less traveled path.
How hilarious that they didn't know they were suing 2600 for DeCSS. And ironically I distinctly recall ripping my friend's DVD copy of Swordfish with that very program.
Halle Barrie's book scene is one of the greatest moments in cinematic history. Perhaps my favourite part of this movie, though, is how the ball bearing explosion goes off, destroying everything in a several hundred metre radius at the beginning of the movie, but after the explosion happens, someone's kid runs into the bank ... by opening the still-intact glass doors.
I don't know what is happening to Jon Travolta right now, but after you told us that him and Hugh Jackman started singing show tunes during their off time and encouraged the extras to start dancing to make them feel better, you realize that Travolta was a great guy to others no matter how weird he got personally.
If there is one thing absolutely superb about this movie it's the Paul Oakenfold's soundtrack. Holy shit how much "his royal Oakieness" nailed it. And that track featuring legendary queen of trance Jan Johnston ("Unafraid") is one of my fav trance(-ish) tunes of all time. If you're into late 90's electronic music go check out this album now. It's gold.
This is one of my favorite movies. I can't believe it didn't do so good. One of the few that could pull off a bad guy getting away at the end. That was my favorite part, because you don't hate Travolta's character.
Why? If Robb White were still alive when that remake was made he would have torn the throats out of everyone who had anything to do with it with the possible exception of James Marsters.
I rented Shoot Em Up and Superbad when they both first came out on DVD. I laughed more at Shoot Em Up than Superbad. It has become one of my favorite movies.

He had already seen the movie and agreed, and we both had a mild chuckle.
Dominic Sena made two brilliant movies: Swordfish and Gone in 60 Seconds. Too bad his later films were not as good. With these comeback trends in Hollywood and love for group-oriented action (e.g. from Fast & Furious to Expendables and Ocean's movies) it would be freaking amazing to see sequels for both Swordfish and Gone in 60 Seconds. Nowadays it would be a huge thing to gather together all the core cast because back in the days these movies were made, they were made just like any other movies. Over time they gained some cult status and public love. I wish to see Swordfish 2 and Gone in 60 Seconds 2 someday. P.S. Swordfish also had a great soundtrack written by Paul Oakenfold.
