People are complaining about Doug Walker above, but i think Phelous as a reviewer is just as bad. Too bitching, annoying voice, unnecesary nitpicking and zero research.
The original is one of my all-time favourites too, as well as a holiday tradition for myself. I actually watched the trailer for the remake out of curiosity and it left such a bad impression I completely wrote off seeing it, but thanks to you, I might just have myself a double feature this Christmas.
The remake is honestly a guilty pleasure to me, even though the original is still superior. I loved the remake's colorful sets, the star-studded female cast (which is rarely done lately), the bizzare backstory, Glen Morgan's (anti-MTV-style) directorial vision, the disturbing Christmas irony, etc. I like this movie. I'm excited to have both 'BC' movies! ;D

Even since I've seen it at the theater (yes I saw it in theaters) on New Year's Eve 2006, I thought it was decent. This movie led me to the 1974 original. While the original was better (and is now a favorite of mine as well), I still thought the remake was okay as a stand-alone. And now thanks to u, you've made my unorthodox appreciation for this movie more justified. It's a guilty pleasure of mine now. Thank u for this, GBF, u r awesome. ;)

The idea with sister was great. I love the fact that we had 2 killers. Really underrated remake, 100x better than that crappy Carrie one
irina1296 I genuinely hate this remake with a passion because how Harvey and Bob Weinstein ruined it. However had that not happened I think it would had been a decent remake in it’s own right. Unfortunately the EXCESSIVE gore is too hard and the backstory is so ridiculous it ruins the film from being scary. It’s a shame because the look of the film and the performances are good.
I see your perspective. I just found the a lack of suspense in the remake. I liked the original because I was on the edge of my seat. I didnt care for the characters in this one. It is fun to watch though.
Same! There were things I loved and hated about this movie. The good thing was the cast being a mix of stars. I loved almost all of the actresses in the film. I hated the unnecessary backstory. It was distracting and cringy. At least it didn't age bad like the 2019 remake which I hear is very horrible. I haven't seen it but from what I read about it, it sounds like cringe.

I really, really love the original movie, and never had any interest in the remake. However, after watching this, I'd be willing to give it a shot. Well done, sir.
What I find interesting is that the director refers to jumpscares as jack in the box scares. And last year, when I wrote a paper on the downfall of horror movies, I compared jumpscares to a jack in the box, and I had never seen the interview
this was an awsome fun fact video about this movie. and I personally love both black Christmas films. the remake has always been a guilty pleasure horror flick of mine that I enjoyed. this video gives me a bigger appreciation for it.
Looks like I will need to give the reboot a second look. I initially watched it out of morbid curiosity, and then instantly dismissed it as a gory, sensational heap of candy-colored trash ... without the appeal and fright of the 1974 film (the original being a movie that is one of the most chilling slashers to me). And the tampering with the story, and the whole Agnes thing, left me vexed. When I saw the title of this video I assumed it was a look at the original movie; there's no indication there. This is 90% about the remake. I would enjoy seeing an in-depth look at the first version of "Black Christmas". These videos are always *so* enjoyable and nicely made.
I become a bigger fan of yours with every passing video. I've never seen the remake of BC. I figured it was just another remake put through the Hollywood meat grinder, but you've got me seriously interested. I'll be watching it.
It's funny because the remake of Black Christmas is one of my favorite horror remakes. I felt like they gave so much character to each one of the girls and I love that because they're all played by up and coming actresses, that you don't quite know who the final girl will be, something that not a lot of horror films do.

I saw the remake before the original and I loved it. It was fun, the characters, though bitchy, were genuinely likable and it didn't skimp on the gore. They really just don't make horror movies like that anymore. That said, when I finally watched the original, it quickly became one of my favorite horror movies of all time. The fact that you never get any backstory or motivation, you never see the killer's face and there is no real closure at the end, combined with the final shot of the house, makes it one of the most unsettling endings in any horror movie that I've seen. It is a shame it doesn't get the love it deserves and I would have loved to have seen the original vision of the remake.
Thanks so much for this. I'v only ever seen the uk version and was really annoyed that scenes from the trailer weren't in it. Now I understand a bit more so cheers!
I saw Willard in theater. Not bad, the sound design was amazing. Definitely to be watched with surround sound. The doppler effects of off screen sounds was great. It really immerses you.
Cast in the trailer for Black Christmas as Michelle Trachtenberg's character. The movie was so gory that in order to show the trailer on American television; all the scenes that would be used needed to be filmed again. Michelle was unavailable so the production company thought they could get away with casting a new person even though Jillian is not actually in the film. In the trailer Jillian gets thrown off a snowy roof and gets pierced by a Christmas tree, she gets stuck having to chop her friend out of a frozen lake in the snow and then she see's her face....
Hi, 53-y/o here. The POV shots date back to the Spencer Tracy Dr. Jeckyl/Mr. Hyde ('32?). Silent Night Bloody Night ('72) also used POV shots (& an Xmas theme too). The doc "Killer Legends" did a good job suggesting The Babysitter & Telephone dated to just b4 the Korean War, but it might be sooner (I'll ck that out, thanks!). I still think the boyfriend was the killer & the ending was tacked on to make everyone "unsure," but Bob Clark says if you watch carefully it is not the bf. (Sure.) Thanks for the newsy video!
Yeah when I was a kid and saw the trailer I was looking forward to watch because of the fake scenes, when I got on dvd when it was released I was like WTF where are those scenes. I did like the movie but it would’ve been better with those scenes
Thanks for this review. I am a total fan of the Original. That eyeball scene had everyone in the theater screaming for Hussey to run. I never paid close attention to the Story of Billy. You can hear it in the phone calls. Those phone calls are spine chilling when you piece them all together. So this back story element for the 2006 remake sounds great. I refused to watch this remake and now will seek it out.
Well it was kind of fitting that I did happen to watch Black Xmas, yes the remake, this christmas for the very first time. Aaaand it was more like a black comedy/horror movie than anything else. I did enjoy the cast, part of the reason why I watched it in the first place, but despite not having any expectations, I would not exactly call it good. But I will definitely see the orginal, if I can find it, and then perhaps give the remake another viewing. Happy New Year!
This is such an interesting view on the movie! I personally don’t like it that much, and I’m kinda sad about that, cause they really wanted it to be good, like, they cared. I guess I just disliked the backstory they gave billy. It felt kinda gross
That was such a well-written, insightful review. I loved the original and now will watch the remake upon your recommendation. New sub : ) (Can you do something on The Beguiled? It is one of my favorite gothic horror movies.)
Love the original Black Christmas. It's one of my favorite Christmas movies. While the remake had its moment, I hated the whole backstory that was added. It took away the dark mystery of the original and almost made the remake more comical. When I went to watch It: Chapter Two, they showed a trailer for yet another remake of Black Christmas. I'll save my money on that and wait for it to come out on cable.
8:20 - 8:30 I knew it! It wasn't Glen Morgan's fault at all; it's Harvey Weinstein's! I felt it in my gut. I even knew it was even his fault for the 'Halloween' remake and the changes to 'Scream 4'. The Weinstein Company doesn't know jack about how to make a proper scary movie. 'Scream' was just their one-time success.
Also, good job on the video. 10 out of 5 stars. ;) I was afraid I was the only one who knew what was happening behind the scenes of this remake. There IS a bright side to the remake: it led me to the original, which I now LOVE. I now watch it back-to-back along with 'Halloween'.
Still one my favorite episodes of yours Cecil, that said, even know it was shot solely for the trailer, the christmas light thresher bit would have been awesome in the film. DAMN YOU WEINSTEIN!
I agree very much with the giallo comment you made, it is very reminiscent of that genre. From the pov shots, to the vibrant use of colors, and even with violence echoes of an Italian slasher flick. The only complaints I really have about the remake of Black Christmas are that, I felt they showed Billy too much. I'd much rather he stayed in the shadows ( at least as an adult ) and he loses his mystique. That's minor though compared to the ending, God that was bad. I really wish they had stuck with the original cell phone ringing ending instead of that ridiculous hospital chase abomination.
The shotgun footage that was shot exclusively for the trailer, is available online. Check out Black Christmas TV spot 2006 TV spot 3 on RUclips if you’re interested.
Years later and I still don't like this Remake. However, after seeing the 2019 remake.....my....fucking God. In comparison, IN COMPARISON! At least the 2006 version is more respectful of the original Black Christmas. And it was still faithful towards the original, while coming up with new things. I'm not praising nor defending this remake, I still didn't like the characters personally, they were too annoying and drama plot holes just throw in there just to add drama for no reason. And giving TOO MUCH information about the killer Bill, REALLY PISSED ME OFF. But AGAIN! In comparison to the 2019 shitty remake, at least the 2006 remake was (at least) having a connection towards the original. The 2019 remake of Black Christmas on the other hand......I.....it was.....I....don't even know what the fuck that was suppose to be. And I have no goddamn idea who it was made for. You wanna talk about a remake that has ZERO connection to the original, NO references to the original and just steals an original title that has NOTHING to do to the original? With bullshit drama fest and sexist and horrible messages! Look no further than Black Christmas 2019! If Bob Clark was still alive, he would have been disgusted by that trash! I NEVER EVER thought I would EVER hear myself say this but.....the 2006 version.....is not that bad.
I gave this remake a chance, more than once. And I'm sorry, but I just couldn't stand this movie! To me, the characters are a bit annoying, too much drama bullshit, reviling the killer AND giving him a back story was way too much. The original is FAR BETTER! Period.
The KING the movie was so terrible. The excessive backstory took away the mysterious aura of the original killer, the characters were so shallow and unlikable & the studio insistence of excessive gore was gross but not in a good way
And it’s horrid to hear Melissa explain what she thinks a serial killer is; obviously she never took psychology and learned that she was talking about a sexual sadist
Hmmm....okay, so this could be a stretch, but "Lauren Hannon" could be a reference to Bob Hannon, who recorded children's songs in the 50's including a few for Christmas, like "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". That's the only "Hannon" I've found connected to Christmas music. Also, pretty sure the character of "Kyle Autry" is a reference to Gene Autry, another famous singer who had a really famous version of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". Anyway, music trivia moment over. Carry on.
I remember watching the trailer for this and it was super bloody but then i watched it and went hmmm none of that was even in the movie. This explains a lot.

I watch this movie every X-mas!
It is a beautiful movie.
Just watched this after seeing your video and all I gotta say is Thank You. That was the best
I have to admit, I love this movie. But I would also like to see the original too.
Looks like a gory x-files Christmas Episode!
I haven't seen the remake, but the original "Black Christmas" is a great watch. And I enjoy your videos.
***** Thanks!
Grace Doran you are welcome!
Jillian Murray who's in a couple of LifeTime Movies.
The first slasher is an interesting topic.
Black christmas, i gave you my heart.
The trailer was exactly why I never saw it before. Guess I need to check it out.
I honestly really enjoyed the new black xmas, the unrated version is tripe tho, thanks for covering this movie
I guess I have to add this to films I now need to see this year.
Hope you enjoy it!
Another awesome video, bud! Happy New Year!
Mindd Kidzag you too!
I've never really paid any attention to this film, but after this I should take a look while I have the chance.
This movie has Mary-Elizabeth Winstead, for her alone this movie is worth watching. She is so much fun in horror movies.
The tv spot with Michelle Trachtenberg and the shotgun is back up on RUclips. Just search “Black Christmas tv spot 3” !!!
merry Christmas and a happy new year goodbadflicks dude oh and good review i have not seen the original or remake but will be seeing both now
kyle reese you too!
I love your perspective, a lot of people hate this reboot. It did have serious problems, but I agree with the positives you point out
Thanks for this review.
I think the first one is scarier due to the fact that they never gave billy a backstory.
Black Christmas is getting another remake and it’s definitely going to be interesting comparing it to the original and this remake
***** happy new year to you too!
This is such an interesting view on the movie! I personally don’t like it that much, and I’m kinda sad about that, cause they really wanted it to be good, like, they cared. I guess I just disliked the backstory they gave billy. It felt kinda gross
Good review, but I was honestly hoping this was an exploring review on the first one, which I love. Oh well, maybe someday you'll review the original.
Susuan Cartwrite maybe one day :)
Okay, thanks.
That was such a well-written, insightful review. I loved the original and now will watch the remake upon your recommendation. New sub : )
(Can you do something on The Beguiled? It is one of my favorite gothic horror movies.)
Thanks for the sub! Surprisingly, I haven't seen The Beguiled but I'll check it out.
GoodBadFlicks Its one of Clint Eastwoods most underrated movies....... He's a wounded Union soldier who ends up in a girl's boarding school.....
That remake is awful. This one is miles better.
I watch this every year, I just love it for what it is :)
8:20 - 8:30
I knew it!
Wait, so my plan to kill Rob Zombie for that piece of shit movie is misguided
jmr022499 somewhat
Still one my favorite episodes of yours Cecil, that said, even know it was shot solely for the trailer, the christmas light thresher bit would have been awesome in the film. DAMN YOU WEINSTEIN!
Thanks!
@@GoodBadFlicks Welcome dude. Gave me an idea for... Well, you know my videos. XD
Yup :/
I agree very much with the giallo comment you made, it is very reminiscent of that genre. From the pov shots, to the vibrant use of colors, and even with violence echoes of an Italian slasher flick.
The only complaints I really have about the remake of Black Christmas are that, I felt they showed Billy too much. I'd much rather he stayed in the shadows ( at least as an adult ) and he loses his mystique. That's minor though compared to the ending, God that was bad. I really wish they had stuck with the original cell phone ringing ending instead of that ridiculous hospital chase abomination.
Turns out keeping the killer a complete mystery was what made the first one so interesting even if it happened by accident.
There's only one thing that bugs me about it.Who found out and told Billy's backstory?.It seems unlikely he'd tell anyone.
The shotgun footage that was shot exclusively for the trailer, is available online. Check out Black Christmas TV spot 2006 TV spot 3 on RUclips if you’re interested.
I love how everyone is talking about Harvey Weinstein... of course they're all talking about Harvey for a different reason 😂😂😂😂
I wonder how Bob Weinstein is...
I don't know how you only have 31k subscribers, you rock!
Carry on.
Are we going to get a 2019 Black Christmas exploring?? That would be a nice follow up
Thanks Cecil for reminding us that christmas is only 356 days later. All jokes aside great video, love the movie keep it up ;)
Jason Todd lol, I've been busy!
I remember watching the trailer for this and it was super bloody but then i watched it and went hmmm none of that was even in the movie. This explains a lot.
Ughhhh i still need that death scene with dana getting dragged i hope a actual christmas horror movie does that..
The best thing about the original movie is that it never reveals the identity of the killer or any clear motive to why he kills.
Best review yet. Thank you!!
iheargoodtoo You are welcome!
I love this movie so much. I watch it every Christmas along with Krampus
I enjoyed this remake, especially after watching the 2019 one.
Awesome Video. Love the original, now I am curious for the remake.
aHeartLikeCandles Thanks!
