    In summary, I love this car!
    So, my gripes and questions after almost 3,000kms… I’ve sent this to my BYD rep who’s been great, but I’ve no idea if it’s been received by those that need to know. I really hope they keep in touch with me and let me know how things progress.
    * Predicative Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking
    The first thing I do when I get in the car is to turn these features off. It is incredibly annoying that these settings are not persisted across starting/stopping the car and this is my #1 gripe.
    I’m sure that these systems will improve over time and we may not even ultimately hold the desire to disable them. Meanwhile, having the car take the control of steering away from the driver involuntarily is disturbing. I’d warrant that it could even be dangerous. My understanding is that these settings are not persisted so that car manufacturers (not just BYD) are able to attain a higher ANCAP score. If that’s the case then we need to lobby ANCAP.
    * Traffic sign recognition
    The car often recognises the signs incorrectly. I can be on a 100km road and then suddenly it will recognise the side road speed and then start beeping at me. I think the beeping noise is extremely annoying as the car is at fault, not me. Similarly, if the car is in cruise control and is set at 110kph, then drifts to 111kph, the car will start beeping at me. Yet, it is the car in control of the speed!
    Improving the sign recognition is welcomed, but being able to override the beeping AND having the car remember this setting is very important. Perhaps an option to just flash the traffic sign on the display instead of beeping would also be useful (I’ve had this in other cars).
    * Beeping
    If I could find a way to disable the hardware beeping at me in general then I would… I’ve been looking for a fuse...
    * Tesla V3 Supercharging
    I tried a Tesla V3 supercharger in Albury. It didn’t work. Worse, the car started beeping at me for no apparent reason. I’m suspecting that this is due to a protocol signalling fault (I build EV chargers!).
    Apparently, Tesla V2 superchargers are ok. I’ve not tried one yet.
    Having BYD vehicles work with Australia’s premium charging network is essential, particularly as Tesla are now receiving government funding to build new supercharging stations across Australia. A major selling point of buying a Tesla is the ability to charge on longer trips. On a recent return trip from VIC, I experienced 3 non-Tesla public charging failures and had to wait in a queue for 1 other. This added 1 hour on to my 9 hour journey and is a major impediment to the uptake of EVs in general. Tesla v3 supercharger compatibility is mandatory.
    * Seat memory
    The seat memory preferences are buried under a number of menus. The first thing you want to do when getting in the car is to apply your seat preferences. This should be possible to apply using hardware buttons, or at the very least, as high prioritised software buttons. Better still, if the BYD app identified you to the car then your settings overall could be applied.
    * Voice recognition
    There are a number of things that voice recognition cannot recognise, particularly Spotify. Selecting audio tracks is quite important.
    * Owners and service manual
    I’m surprised that this vehicle didn’t arrive with a printed Owners and Service manual. This is my first car ever without one. Should I expect one?
    I’ve found this one, but again, I would have expected a printed version of it: bydautomotive.com.au/brochures/BYD-SEAL-Owners-Handbook-2023.pdf
    * BYD App
    It could at least have a picture of the Seal, and not the Atto when charging!
    * Floor mats
    I’ve had to buy ill-fitting third party floor mats. Will BYD be supplying some shortly?
    I see you have some so this upsets me.
    ***
    Again, I love this car. I don’t think the above issues are big ones to fix. Even if it’s just the persistent settings issue that’s fixed, then I reckon I’ll be happy.
    Thanks for the channel!

      @@Peter-vn8ueNope. My sales rep told me that no mats were available when I picked it up. Perhaps this is now an option when ordering, but I would’ve been quite likely to select the mats when ordering. Do you have a link to where the mats can be ordered now? I couldn’t find a link to accessories. At this stage, getting mats is probably still an issue, but I’ll be happy to be proven wrong.

    Great report Tom. After 8 months and 10k in our Atto 3 I am still glad we chose it. You seem to like 3 box sedans, we prefer SUVs because you basically get the same internal space and boot space but with a smaller footprint.
    The larger battery is the only thing Seal Premium has that I would like in Atto 3. FYI we live in very hilly terrain south of Adelaide and our consumption is 16.7kWh/100km (historic figure) so our range is mid 350km but itis okay because we charge at night for 8c/kWh using 7kW box so 1.4c per kilometre!
    The BYD Song L is the only potential BYD I might trade up to in the future which is another SUV.
    Thanks for your honest appraisal.

It threw us back in the seat in sport mode. Did not drive the "performance" as we want range not speeding tickets. A bit dissapointing to hear your range results so far (predominantly around town?) for an 82kwh battery. I look forward to your long distance efficency testing. That's the most important thing to me. Having only just recently sat in a display Seal and owning a 2022 Model Y RWD your review really highlights the stark approaches and expertise of BYD and Tesla - one is a car manufacturer with an eye on making exteriors and interiors that punch above their price, and the other is a hyper focussed software company that provides an end-to-end EV experience that’s currently got next to no competition overall.

At least hopefully all the issues can be fixed by software updates. So far I have only been in a country town and driving regional and country roads and I am keen to see what my experiences will be like when I return to my normal city life later this month. One thing for sure, my Model 3 is not a car I enjoyed driving on country and regional roads as the loud road noise is very uncomfortable for me, so I have driven it just about exclusively in the city. I was also surprised to find that my Model 3 RWD was a bit underpowered on high speed regional roads when over taking, etc, compared to the instantaneous acceleration and zippy driving I had enjoyed in the city. Needless to say, there have been no problems with lack of power in the Seal Performance 👍

    I also had some concerns about the ground clearance. The Australian brochure (and the NZ one) gives the ground clearance as 145mm. However many reviewers and brochures from other countries have it as 120mm. I contacted BYD Australian office and they assured me that it really was 145mm. I did what you did and went to a experience centre and measured the ground clearance. As you said, at the rubber protrusions in front of the front wheels it was only 120mm which is very low. As I sometimkes travel on unsealeed roads, this was a concern for me. It is a shame because it is a very appealing car. On a more positive note for Seal owners , reviewers generaly quote the price of the Tesla 3 RWD as $61900, and the Seal Premium as $58798 giving a saving of $3102. The true saving is actually $4902 because Tesla charge $1400 delivery fee and $400 order fee while BYD do not charge these fees

      @philipkeane3238 I've had to pretty much move away from purchasing a Seal due to the front bumper clearance heading into my driveway, at the critical join between the bitumen part of the driveway which is about 4 metres leading from the public road sloping down to the concrete of my driveway, the clearance at the leading edge of the bumper - the shiny black bottom part is only a couple of centimetres with the vehicle fully unladen and the driver out of the vehicle. I'm guaranteed to damage the underside of the bumper. Placing a plastic or steel riser at this junction is unlikely to work, and the gate is close to this junction with almost no clearance under the gate for adding something.
      Expensive driveway work is probably the only real fix and negates any saving by purchasing a Seal. I'll have to bring a Tesla 3 Highland home to carefully test. But I only need a few more centimetres clearance to feel safe traversing my driveway. I think the Model 3 will give me that extra height.
      The overall chassis height above the road of the Seal may also be an issue on some unsealed roads and sandy undulating "tracks' where most other vehicles are probably fine, as you allude to. I'm not into off-roading but would like to carefully drive a Seal on some minor unsealed roads and occasionally "potholy" roads, where most non-mudrunners are fine.
      Pity as I was almost certain to purchase a Premium or Performance to complement our Atto 3. So may end up with a Tesla and Atto 3 instead if 2 BYD's.
      The Performance Seal blew me away when I drove it the other day. My wife's eyes hurt from the acceleration! LOL! She used to complain about my WRX back around 2000. That was lame compared to the Performance Seal. 😁 But I'm far from a hoon, so the power would be mostly wasted on me - and I want to keep my licence.

How are companies like this even allowed to start selling one single car before they fix their software that is trying to kill you? It doesn't matter if you can turn it off, it's on by default and they should be held accountable for their lousy software BEFORE they can have permission to sell not after. Great video Tom, I just have 2 points a bit different from your view.
    1. Road/Tyre noise, from my point of view, it is pretty noisy, worse than I expected. I also tested drive the Telsla M3, Kia EV6, Polestar 2, they are far better than the Seal. I don't feel the Seal as quite as I expected. If the car don't move, maybe quiet, but road noise, not quite well.
    2. The sales told me that the whole car windows not tinted. the rear windows are just dyed, but not UV protected. He told me if I want the car to be UV and heat protected, I need to get all windows tinted with extra cost. Hopefully you can find out for us. Or if you have equipment to measure, that would be better. Maybe good for another video 😀

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! Road noise is subjective isn’t it? Even with a dB reader, there are so many confounding factors and to objectively compare it between cars you’d have to replicate the exact same conditions which is very hard to do. I’ll have better idea vs Model 3 in coming days when I compare the two cars …
      There is a picture of testing done at a professional tinting workshop in Melbourne posted in the BYD Seal Aus FB group showing 91.4% UV protection for the rear windows as is

    • @leizhang7266
      @leizhang7266 10 месяцев назад

      I agree with you that road noise and hard to measure and is subjective. However, the test drive is on very similar surfaces, I'll say the new M3 and the Ev6 possibly in a worse road surface from my memory. UV 91.4% is good none-filmed window, nowadays almost all tint films can achieve 99%, but key difference is heat. The heat protection varies across those products. Hopefully I am making sense here.@@LudicrousFeed

    To me the 1000 pound (probably more) gorilla in the car is the battery. Perhaps the BYD Seal with its LFP blade batteries may be safer if damaged - less or no chance of fire - and better longevity with its LFP chemistry than most other EVs. This segment is such a tease. Chinese EVs let alone phones are practically non-existent in the U.S.

    I was referring to what they sign off on each service which is often required when selling a car. I’m also in my 50s and had heaps of cars. This is the first with no printed manual or service booklet. It’s odd and probably more a reflection of BYD establishing themselves here.

    Tom regarding the suspension, how It works? IS It confortable?
    The Seal Performance AWD Suspensión (530cv) has electronic functions depending while Driving It changes , soft or sportive.
    Regarding the Seal premium (313 CV) RWD, the suspension is not electronic, It offers just One function same always, and , do you find It rígid/hard? Confortable ?
    I Hope It is confortable , I prefer a softly suspensión for daily drives

    Coming from ICE cars. We are leaving a F90 M5 Comp (keeping it for life) and wanted a Model S or X but being Australia no dice. Now yes we are going down to a much more affordable car, but it’s just what we want to try an EV for daily. We tried the Taycan but just didn’t like the drive (also a 992 Turbo S owner). We drove a Model 3 Long Range, and a BMW i4 M50 and we will be trying the Seal Performance. We sat in one and noticed that the leather amongst other trim was so shiny. Would you think it’s even worth the drive? Leaning towards the BMW as I hated the Teslas autopilot, it fights you non stop versus BMWs which has been flawless in the M5. Would you chose this over a Model 3, for overall comfort and performance?

    Thanks Tom....nice to hear. I thought the Seal would have a dashcam feature since the Atto 3 does and can't you use your phone as a key similar to Atto 3?? This is supposedly marketed as the next generation of their product line so would have thought the dashcam & phone as a key would come across unless it's needing a software update to make that happen.

    Tom we put a deposit down today on a Seal here in Brisbane. Approx 10 week lead time now on any black interior models to Brisbane (Last week we could have had one by the end of the month)
    Chose the Ocean Blue interior instead as there were only a few un-allocated cars left on the ship arriving later this month in Brisbane. Which means we can have it around Easter. Because of this BYD staff are also ringing and offering those with black interior on order the opportunity to swap the order to get it quicker (still have to pay though)
    BYD staff also confirmed security concerns around the Chinese based oem dash cam means they won't be offering it. Instead they now offer a BlackVue front and rear set installed for $1500 as an option.
    The Seal is selling itself apparently.
