“Demons & Wizards” and “The Magician’s Birthday” were the key one-two punch for Uriah Heep in the early ‘70s. Every track on both albums are excellent.

From the 1972 album, " Demons and Wizards" it was the first record released from the album.
Ken Hensley had a persistent dream for over a week and co wrote the song regarding it. A gentle semi acoustic ballad about a wanderer meeting the Wizard of a thousand Kings. David Bryon was the singer with great vocals. The guitars are so groovy. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Robert. 👏👏
    Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

My Mom listened to this over and over and over on vinyl when I was growing up. Still love it today. What a great band, with a signature sound. You know, most Metal and Rock singers are really great vocalists, if you listen closely. it’s not an easy genre to sing, especially live for years and decades. Also, was lucky enough to see them live a couple of times, and they sound great live. Agree, their harmonies are amazing.

For years, Uriah Heep occupied the zone between Heavy Rock and Prog, somewhere between Deep Purple and Yes; this album as a whole was definitely a Prog project. Their earlier (1971) and longer song "July Morning" is a great example of their Prog leanings and was a concert staple.

They were amazing live. 1972 or 73. The night saw them, Deep Purple were Headliners. Buddy Miles, first was Uriah Heep, all hell broke loose when UH was about half into their set. Those on LSD lost their minds, screaming, mad rushing for the doors, hitting the walls, and rows of seats. The song ended, and light came so folks could. It was crazy that night.

Some of Uriah Heep's best tunes were their more mellow ones. These guys were NOT a one trick hard-rock-and-only-hard-rock pony. And David Byron was great at the ballads/mellower tunes.

Uriah Heep (your I ah- heap) They've always had beautiful songs & then rocked their arse's off. Even some Jazz influenced 'Wake up' to a symphonic masterpiece 'Salisbury' especially when Ken Hensley was the main song writer. I saw them live in Madrid, John Wetton from Asia was on bass, He did a bass solo that had the 2 musicians I went with along with my sister. Their jaws dropped during his bass solo, I've never heard a bass solo sound like lead guitar! It's before David Byron's alcoholism brought about him being replaced. The first vocalist was a decent replacement but Hensley left the band, did a few albums with Blackfoot. But got out of the business long enough to kick his cocaine addiction & had made some of his best solo work after heep. 'I did it all' 'Send me an Angel'' I could name 50! But 'Rain' is up there as far as one of their most beautiful songs. I played it in several bands & it filled the dance floor many belt buckles were shined & several rubbed potty places Lol! To me that's what made Uriah heep who they were, they can rock with the best. Hensley's Hammond B3 & slide guitar work is top notch, Mick Box on guitar was very under rated. David Byron vocals had an unbelievable range & Lee Kerslake on drums, Gary Thain on bass, then Wetton RIP Ken, Gary (75) Byron (78?) & Ken & Lee have recently passed. My early teens as I switched from Keyboards to guitar driven by Mark Farner of Grand Funk who wrote 92% of their material. 11 gold & 10 Platinum which by now with CD sales & online sales of LP's I'm sure several are double platinum by now. They were the first American band to start out with 10 straight Platinum albums, the critics hated them, mostly due to their thieving manager Terry Knight who insisted that he do all the interviews with the media. That rubbed many the wrong way, they were 19 & 20!when they opened the Atlanta pop festival they ended up playing every day & ended up closing the concert! All in 3 day's. 160-185,000 people & Grand Funk after opening for LED Zeppelin twice, Zeppelin stopped them twice, afraid to follow that much energy. First in Cleveland the 2nd & last time in Detroit which they claim since they're all from Flint. The home of the Fisher body plant when GM had a huge line of vehicles. But Mark inspired me to learn guitar & sing. By 75 I was hired by a pro band in Spain, 3 months before I graduated & stayed an extra 14 months as lead singer & shared lead &
rhythm guitar with the only Spanish guy in the band. The rest GI's. They were my 2 favorite bands with Badfinger especially the Album ,' Straight up' several songs were both produced by & he played slide with Pete Hamm the one & only George Harrison. They were signed to Apple records. Pete Hamm wrote Nelson's 'Without you' also done by Mariah Carey. Love the channel disabled since 95 it provides entertainment during the far too often stuck in bed. Thx Ric C.

It was almost an unspoken rule that hard rock or heavy metal bands had to have a ballad in their repertoire, especially after Stairway to Heaven. This song always remined me of deep purples "Temple of the king, and King Crimsons The court of the crimson king.

Harri-- Uriah Heep has many albums and are still active today with original guitarist Mick Box. Their first few albums had fab vocalist David Byron. I wasn't much into much of their catalog after his departure until more recently with singer Bernie Shaw (who sounds quite like Byron, really). This album,Demons & Wizards, along with Look At Yourself, are bangers--every song! A newer one with Shaw that is very good is titled 'Wake The Sleeper'. Dive in! T

Harri-- for your own enjoyment, do you EVER listen to these albums from start to finish. You have such an obvious appreciation for the artists and music, but so often the intention they have is a complete performance experience. They sound out of context for many of us boomers.
You mention the “soft” songs…there was almost a full variety on even the hardest rock LPs.
