    Richard Carpenter who arranged this song wanted the rock guitar solo but it was controversial for some of their fan base at the time ,but now many rock groups have power ballads on the set list

    You're right, Harri, Karen's death was big news and not just for a day or two. Her death reverberated for months, causing a huge increase in the awareness of anorexia, and it is still impacting people today. Along with her talent as a singer. Chef's kiss of a voice. ❤✌

    Originally from their 1972 album, "A Song For You", Richard and John Bettis wrote this song after Richard was inspired by a Bing Crosby movie, Rhythm of the Rain. It's about a musician trying to write a song called Goodbye to Love and Richard liked the song title.
    One of the first power ballads, even more poignant in retrospect, with Karen's effortless delivery in her warm and velvety voice of the emotional lyrics.
    Tony Peluso adds the fuzz guitar solo that tips this song into a classic hit, along with great orchestral backing. Unforgettable. ❤ Great reaction Harri. ❤ Beautiful Tim. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦

    Saw them TWICE in concert... and still would go again, if... Difference here is, there's no overdubbing of Karen and Richard's voices on multi-tracks of tape, which made their albums so lush and WONderful !! Listen to the studio version for comparison.

    Richard Carpenter spoke of Karen and Goodbye to Love: “Karen, along with Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis and John Gary, could take one breath and do the super-human bit where they just kept singing and singing. You are absolutely right in your mention of 'Goodbye To Love', which has some very long phrases. Other singers would come up to Karen and comment on this; I remember John Davidson asking, 'Do you have three lungs?' because Karen took a breath and sang, 'time and time again the chance for love has passed me by and all I know of love is how to live without it…' and that Karen just did naturally. 'Live', as well. It’s not like we had to get it in multiple takes in the studio."

    She had such an unique voice, it was more than wonderful and amazing so much. I loved it from the very beginning in 1970 (Close to you) and I loved this song even it was not so popular in Germany in 1972 I guess, it dropped. And again, this poor soul died much, much too young ! ! PS and I always thought that this guitar solo is one of the best I know.Tony Peluso.

  • @jbs256
    @jbs256 Месяц назад +5

    Hi Harri,
    Excellent reaction to a classic song. This song has some history. First it was the first “Power Ballad” created by Richard when he told guitarist Tony Peluso to basically; go for it. Tony was giving a regular “Carpenters” type guitar play. They came up with what you heard, Tony from that point on stayed w/Carpenters. There’s a long story about contacting Tony, for another time.
    This was also the first Carpenters hit that was NOT a cover. Written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis, it was an original Carpenters song.
    When Karen recorded the song for the album. She did something that she did not do in the concert. She sang a long segment, early in the song, 26 syllables, on one breath with chromatics. Most if not all singers, even Carpenters tribute artists, don’t do that. Like Karen in the concert, they breathe. You know who replicated the original feat? Tori Holub, I linked the short video she made doing it, below. Just for you, it’s a short. (Time & Time …26… breathe)
    Your reference to Karen not losing her voice. It’s true, not sure if you reacted to it? Karen’s last professionally recorded song was “Now.” Not only was she in full voice, it was a “One Take Karen” recording.
