Best female voice of all time? This title would go to someone who can switch from tender to gritty and back again in an instant. You get this from Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, and even sometimes from "Idol" contestants. Karen is probably the best female voice in her genre (ABBA fans might disagree), but best overall is a bit of a stretch.

One of the unforeseen side effects of the space race and the moon landing. Space was suddenly a theme in a lot of art for a while afterwards.
BTW, Klaatu was the lead character in the 1951 Sci-Fi classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still," which if you haven't seen it, we need to get it into the poll because it's one of the Greats.
Karen Carpenter's voice is beautiful and the arrangement of this track is amazing.
It makes me happy to think that if we ever make contact with alien life the first thing they hear is Karen's heavenly voice.

Passage was my favorite Carpenters LP. A true hidden Gem. The critics forgot this was their exploratory effort, to what could have been a new realm of musical sound for them, hence the title name "PASSAGE" The album contained a departure from their ordinary tracks. Calypso, Country, Space POP, Andrew LLyod Weber's Classic Rock Opera "Evita'. The album cover design told the story, nothing short of Brilliant!

The middle section was clearly inspired by the Cantina scene from Star Wars.
The song and the video predate Star Wars, the video includes clips from movies that came out after the song.

This song was part of a 1 hour television special SPACE ENCOUNTERS featuring Carpenters. This was a time when both the films: STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND were relatively new releases in theaters. Seems out of place by today's standards but one has to keep in mind the context of the era in which it came from.

With so much music produced through our lifetime, we sometimes fail to keep checking back on our past; as we get older, we slowly start returning to our youth and the music. As more channels like yours keep reminding us of what we had, the more of us return to those times. I'm a 'baby boomer', although l grew up in the 50's; l have an appreciation of music that come before me, especially Big Band music. Music is a reflection of our lives. Keep enjoying your journey.

"Fun" sums up this song perfectly, and Richard would agree, he's said as much in interviews. One aspect I particularly like is that the orchestral arrangement was by British musical arranger Peter Knight (who always called Richard "guv'ner" when they were recording it), who was well-known in the UK for his music arrangements in the hugely popular BBC Christmas specials of the legendary UK double act Morecambe and Wise. Oh, the Carpenters are half-British, by the way, their father was an ex-pat Brit who emigrated to the US. They still have relatives in London.
Peter Knight continued working with the Carpenters for the remainder of their recording career, providing orchestrations for their studio albums as well as their TV specials, including a good portion of their timeless Christmas recordings. Knight is also famous, of course, for providing the gorgeous orchestrations for The Moody Blues’ landmark Days Of Future Passed album, a decade earlier.
Love this song. Karen sounds great even in space! Many don't like their experimental album Passage but I think it is wonderful.
The original was released in 1976 by the Canadian band Klaatu . Rumors were swirling that this was really the Beatles. You must listen on RUclips to their debut album just titled Klaatu , where many of the singles you would bet your life , was written and sung by the Beatles .Standout tracks that are a must to listen to are Sub-Rosa Subway ( the most Beatlesque track imo. ) , California Jam , and the haunting Little Neutrino . When album was released , had no credits for the musicians or producer behind it . The mystique was heightened when it was revealed nobody from Capitol Records had ever met the band on release . A journalist wrote an article giving reasons why Klaatu were in fact the Beatles , and this was a long - lost anonymously issued follow up to their Revolver .
I remember back when I was 16 and a big Beatles fan when Klaatu became popular and we were all freaking out on the possibility that they were the Beatles! They were one of the biggest mysteries of my youth!

This was such a departure of what The Carpenters sound was and the public wouldn't accept it, to bad, great song. They don't venture away from the original on this which I think you would enjoy as well. The members of KLAATU even liked their version.
Great job by Karen and Richard plus all the musicians, but you also need to give major props to Klaatu for writing and putting out the original version of this song!
I had quite the experience listening this album by Klaatu with a buddy, on Magic Mushrooms on a beautiful summer night, high up in the Canadian Rocky Mountains in 1978. No clouds, millions of stars, a full moon, northern lights, and something else, black, square moving behind everything. I'll never forget that experience.

Yes that is Tony Peluso. He has a great D.J voice. He also announces the songs for the medley of oldies on the Now and Then album by the Carpenters. Richard was always innovative and doesn't get enough credit for his genius. Along with Karen's unmatched fabulous voice, they were destined for the fame that they received. Ultimate musicians with class. I have been a fan since their beginnings and listen to them every day. Karen is surely missed by the world and thanks for continuing their legacy of great music Salvo.
This is one of my favorite songs from the 1977 studio album "Passage", i still remember when i first bought my first Carpenters album "Their Greatest Hits" on cassette in 1992 and the album closes with this beautiful song, i just didn't know what to expect of it but it was really beautiful done by the Carpenters so i beacme a Carpenters fan since the day i bought that cassette in april 1992. 😉🙂
I have the Klaatu album. Richard was a big fan. The band’s sound was electronic and space sounding but paradoxically, all the instruments were non-electronic. Richard was interested in emulating this. This is in context with 1977; there was a fascination with space exploration. Skylab was garnering attention, the space shuttle was in production, Star Wars was everywhere, and Close Encounters was on the radar. There also seems to be some ELO influence which brings in the Beatles influence; Jeff Lynn and the Carpenters were heavily inspired by the Fab Four.
Karen can do anything...she moves you...she can take you in diff.places and universe...and by the way,she landed in my heart since i was 10,and now that i'm 24yo i kept her inside in my heart and never let her go...i locked her in❤😅.

I've always loved this track. The opening part with the radio DJ and the alien calling in always makes me smile a lot. And of course Karen's voice is just beautiful, Richard's arrangement sublime and the orchestra and backing singers perfect. And your reaction was brilliant with the same kind of emotions I felt I remember when I heard it for the first time in my teens.

I remember liking this as a kid as I was into sci-fi. I think the Carpenters were probably jumping on the Star Wars craze as that movie was released in May of 1977 and was extremely popular cultural moment and this single came out in September.
The song was created over a year before Star Wars, and they recorded it well before Star Wars. If anything Star Wars could be said to have ridden the coat tails of Close Encounters, and this song (by Klaatu)

As a kid , this was one of my favorite songs. It was a great time for space... NASA, Carl Sagan and Cosmos, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Roger and the 25th Century... all hitting hard.
Enjoyed hearing this one again. The video is from their 1978 Space Encounters TV Special which aired on ABC on May 17, 1978. Another song from the 1977 Passage album you should hear is "Two Sides". Great job on the reactions.

Richard Carpenter was the musical genius in this group! AND they are not in the RnR Hall of Fame!! Very underrated music from the 70s. Karen started out as the drummer, but with her voice, they put her out front. Her voice is so clear and perfect! Nice of you to recognize these older songs from a great era!
Now that you’ve arrived at their Passages album, you MUST listen to their “On The Balcony Of The Casa Rosada”, which leads directly into Karen’s gorgeous rendition of “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina” from EVITA, recorded when it was still only a stage musical in London’s West End, before it became a Broadway smash and later movie musical. Many people still think Karen’s version is the best of them all. ❤

I just love this song. It's so much fun to see the Carpenters branch away from the usual lyrical themes. Of course it came out the same year as Star Wars and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" so sci-fi, aliens ufos etc were very much in the public consciousness and this song fitted well into the mix. Good times!

I worked for Klaatu in their very brief touring history in the early 1980's and became good friends with all the members, which I am still in contact with. One of the co-founders of the band, and co-writer of this song, Terry Draper, has a thank you letter from Karen Carpenter framed and hung prominently on his wall at home. I visited him last summer (2023) and saw it. He considers it one of his most prized possessions.
The band always performed this as their last song at the end of the night and was, of course, one of the highlights of the live show. Most of us Klaatu fans were introduced to this song as we put the needle down on the first track of side one of their first album, released in 1976. The band members didn't put their names or faces on the album sleeve as they wanted the music to speak for itself. A DJ in the USA would eventually hear the album and brought forth an opinion that it might be The Beatles, performing anonymously. The album did have some Beatle-esque songs and one member sounds "a bit" like McCartney. It would be well worth your while to find the original on RUclips and give it a listen.
The Carpenters' version stays pretty faithful to the original but adds a few embellishments. And I have to say, the look of pure joy on your face reacting to this made me smile ear to ear. Great reaction! Great Channel; I have seen dozens of your reactions. Well done sir.

Back in the late 70s I think this had very limited airplay, if I remember correctly. Why only limited? I think in general we thought it was kind of corny. I mean we had Bowie and Led Zeppelin, and other great rock bands to listen to. And this was a departure from the Carpenter's beautiful ballads that were hugely popular. So at least in my circle we thought it was corny. But I can understand how people might appreciate it more today.

the "Alien's" voice presented here is RICHARD'S. This TV Special Space Encounters has John Davidson and Suzanne Somers in it. Suzanne and Karen do a dance skit to "Man Smart.....Woman Smarter" all that of course found elswhere here on RUclips.

When this first Klaatu album (3:47 EST) there weren't any credits as to who this band was and a reporter from Rhode Island (think his name was Steve Smith) felt they could have been the Beatles re-united. This rumour went viral and people were speculating whether it was the Beatles. Back then I was having so much fun listening to what people thought because I knew that Klaatu were 3 guys from the suburbs of Toronto. My friend the drummer, told me that they wanted the music to speak for itself, hence the lack of credits, photos, etc. on the album and had no idea this Beatles thing would happen.
Because at the last programming meeting it was decided that you were finally ready for it.
