I recall hearing this song on the college radio stations after midnight, as the intro to discussion of Space Aliens, once Star Wars came out, as they would play the full long version. Of course, it surprised us all to know that we were listening to the Carpenters. It made a lot of us start to listen to the Carpenters after that, especially after hearing Karen's voice. She had to have a voice from another world, as it was just beautiful.

Klaatu's original of this song was their first release and fueled rumors of a Beatles reunion under a different name. I confess that I didn't even know this Carpenters cover even existed, but I'm mighty glad it does. Karen Carpenter's voice is stunning, and the arrangement transports me into the friendly, welcoming, 1970's imagining of outer space. Thanks for revealing a hidden gem, mates! @@capstan50g I did too. I was 14 for Close To You. I recommended to the two Lads a video created by a Carpenters super-fan (she’s 20!) of a Karen drumming compilation. I told that Lads to ignore that she happens to sing. I’m NOT telling you to ignore that fact. Not for 40 years have I gotten this many goosebumps by any singing voice. Especially one that “sounds like Kacie.” Well never say never. Go check out Tori Holub here on RUclips . Especially her Carpenters covers. They are mostly Shorts but she has one full length video, her cover of The Bacharach/David Medley. And 5 full length audios. They are not all on her channel but are on RUclips. If you tell me you like what you see/hear I’ll show you how to find the others. Her most recent audio is on her channel. Enjoy and please, if you have a heart condition, be seated and hydrated. This song reached no:9 on the UK singles chart and it would be well worth you watching the Nation’s Favourite Carpenters song just to showcase the huge back catalogue of hits they had..from being the biggest selling group in the USA in the 1970’s they became just as popular or even more so in the UK and subsequent compilation albums since Karen’s passing have topped the UK charts or not far from it..quality music only just gets bigger and still captivating audiences over 40 years later..one of or perhaps the greatest female voice ever recorded.

It's nice to see how many people are surprised with hearing this for the first time! I felt the same way I heard it for the first time in the late 90s, about 20 years AFTER it first came out, and 15 years after Karen Carpenter died - probably why I never came across the song by that time. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Karen and her brother, Richard, were even remotely interested in extraterrestrial life that long ago! I remember seeing a UFO when I was 13 years old (1961) literally "parked" in mid-air over the power lines running along the railroad tracks behind my house! At 13 years old I didn't care where it came from, I just felt "grateful" that I was "allowed" to CLEARLY see one of their craft before it vanished without a sound.

This song was from the 1977 album Passage. It was a designed different direction for them to try to revive their careers. Their record sales had dropped dramatically in the US by this time. The album had some eclectic songs, this one, Dont Cry For Me Argentina, some country, a bit of everything and still didnt do all that well in the States. But did well in the UK and Japan. I think they were trying to figure out why record sales had slipped but it was a combination of disco around 1975 and their image also needed some kind of reboot. But there is no denying their talent on the album.

The first time lasers were used on stage was 1973 so the lasers were state of the art at the time that's why they were included in the video. Remember this is before computer animation and digital film. Even thought the video looks amateurish today it was not that easy to make back then and probably not as cheap as it looks. Yes, art piece is what it comes off as today. Also remember they did not have MTV back then either so it was limited to where it was shown.

I knew the Carpenters covered it but I don’t think a lot of stations picked it up so I never heard it until years later when I got the Carpenters greatest hits CD. The idea for this track was suggested by an actual event that is described in The Flying Saucer Reader, a book by Jay David published in 1967. In March 1953 an organization known as the "International Flying Saucer Bureau" sent a bulletin to all its members urging them to participate in an experiment termed "World Contact Day" whereby, at a predetermined date and time, they would attempt to collectively send out a telepathic message to visitors from outer space. The message began with the words..."Calling occupants of interplanetary craft!". I was 10 years old at the time and spent most of the day thinking MOST of the words of this song.

This is one of those things, a mystery, something I heard a glimpse of in my youth in the pre-Internet days. Heard part of it on an a lousy radio one night, couldn’t quite understand the key lyrics, but the sound of it stayed in my head for decades. For the longest time I couldn’t discover what the song was. Then I finally got the search terms right and discovered this Carpenters cover! I’d had one or two Carpenters albums over the years but wasn’t aware of this song. What I heard 40 years ago may even have been the Klaatu original, don’t know, but it was quite gratifying to chase down an item from my list of mysteries to solve.

You have stumbled, delightfully, into a lot happening here. First, you do need to watch the Klaatu video. They were said to be The Beatles reforming under a pseudonym. Spoiler, they weren’t. It was made during a time of “Contact.” I played the Klaatu version for my roommate awhile ago (not a Carpenters fan). He liked it. Then I told him Carpenters covered it. He said NO WAY. I said Way and played it. His mind was blown. LOL
The DJ was Tony Peluso, of fuzz guitar fame for Goodbye To Love. He played the DJ earlier on side 2 (vinyl) of the album Now and Then (Carpenters not Beatles). They did a rock ‘n Roll Medley with a DJ introducing the songs. This song originally had pushback from the fans. It’s now loved.
I’ll add a couple of Carpenters or related videos to add to your list, I generally don’t pick the usual suspects, this one would be me and THIS version, but you just did it.
To see them play live with Karen on drums and singing. November 1970 they performed The Bacharach/David Medley for the first time in public on The Ed Sullivan Show. It was at a Military Hospital in salute to Veterans Day. The Sullivan channel has the best version and generally isn’t blocked. I see my previous requests still up.
There are numerous Karen drum solos on RUclips. But there are few compilations. One that was done about 2 years ago by a young woman who is a Carpenters super-fan has caught my attention, for multiple reasons, is one of the best. I’ll keyword this instead of a link. Oh and that this young lady happens to also sing has absolutely nothing to do with this recommendation at all. That she happens to sound like “someone” has absolutely nothing to do with this recommendation at all. 🤞
Tori Holub Karen Carpenter Best Drumming Compilation
That should take you to it just fine. Nothing else to see there, say no more, say no more. I’m sure you’ve gotten many recommendations and the rabbit hole is deep. Doing Occupants this early is brave but delightful. I’m happy you liked it, 9 is a good rating as there are numerous 10’s ahead. Even a few 11’s. Loving your channel and I am subscribed.

This version of the music video synchronizes the song to two different performances. The first one was filmed at Vidtronics for a program called Starparade and aired on November 3rd of that year. A few months later, the Carpenters lip-synced two of their other hits on the same show. These would be “Top of the World” and Sweet, Sweet, Smile”. In early 1978, a second performance of “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” was filmed for a television show called Space Encounters, and aired on ABC on May 17, 1978.

Klaatu the Canadian rock band who originated the song was on capitol records, and when their debut album was released, there was a fairly widespread rumor and speculation that they were actually the Beatles. This rumor was furthered by the fact that on their debut album, there were no song credits, and no band members listed. There are quite a few Beatles sounding songs on the album and it is quite experimental. They experienced a bit of a backlash when disappointed fans discovered that they were not the Beatles reformed. it was a bit unfair because the band members never participated in the deception, capital records, PR department decided to remain silent to take advantage of the speculation
