The going theory is that the Casita was the soul of Pedro, Abuela's lover. The hints to this are:
When they first met, they waved to each other, and when the Casita was first built, it waved at Abuela and she waved back.
There was a butterfly when they met, and the house is full of imagery of butterflies (the walls, the vision, the end too).
The Casita has a personality, and it's shown to be very playful and mischievous, just like Pedro was.
The magic was brought about just as Pedro died.
The magic/Casita uses all of its powers to protect the family and the community, keeping them safe, just as was Pedro's last wish.

I understand why people would hate on Abuela, she did create really high expectations for everyone in the family but I highly doubt that she did it because she's "evil". People are underestimating the amount of trauma Abuela went through, she was forced to flee from her home, the love of her life got killed right in front of her, she was left all alone and homeless with three children to raise, then she was gifted with a miracle: a home. It makes perfect sense to me why she was so scared to lose it, she never wanted to go back to being homeless and alone again so she did everything she could to make sure everyone was keeping the miracle alive

I love that you actually noticed that Dolores might've spilled the beans about Mirabel being in Bruno's Vision on purpose, instead of her just not being able to keep a secret because of her gift like many people think. I mean, she kept the secret of Bruno living in the walls of the house for 10 years straight. There is no way that she didn't talk about the vision on purpose to try to ruin the proposal. i don't believe that she'd do it to intentionally ruin the proposal (like regardless of how she feels about the guy she likes being bethrothed to her cousin) but with a concern for the state of the casita and the encanto. she probably thinks it shouldn't be a secret which is why she told camilo but spilled it when the dinner was already going sideways.

Technically she mentions Bruno several times, "I can still hear him." But the family ignored it, "We don't talk about Bruno" so she stops trying to tell them and maybe thinks its in her head. Hence the end "I knew he never left!"

    • @marsisbae

i really don't think she was trying to ruin the proposal. the difference between mirabel's secret and bruno's secret is that the house breaking is urgent and affects everyone, so they needed to know. with bruno, he was not ready to return to the house and thought everyone would be better off without knowing he was still there. i personally dont think dolores would choose to ruin the proposal as she hadn't acted in jealousy to isabel previously and seemed resigned to the fact that mariano would be with her instead

If anyone is interested in the Colombia history influences, Encanto takes place in Columbia in the 1950s and Abuela says that the candle was given to her 50 years earlier so she got it at the turn of the 20th century. During the early 1900s a civil war was taking place in Columbia called The Thousand Days’ War (1899-1902) there was 100,000 to 150,000 fatalities during this conflict about 2.5 percent of the nation's population at that time, the conflict was the deadliest and most destructive war in the history of Colombia. I think it’s important to remember that the trauma Abuela experienced is not made up but a very real thing that happened to many real life Columbia’s.

    I finally understood the symbolism.
The encanto is a fantasy world for thousands of Columbians who were forced to leave their home.
The house itself is a representation of the family dynamic.
As the arguments between family members kept getting worse, the house was literally breaking. They lived in a "broken home".
Abuela's magic is to be a light to lead people away from danger.
Bruno can see the future to avoid any threats.
Pepa controlled the weather so it's always perfect outside.
Julieta can heal people so illnesses won't kill anyone.
Dolores can hear anything miles away, in case anyone invades.
Camilo can look like anyone because he doesn't know who he is yet. Plus it can be useful to infiltrate and spy on anyone who wishes to hurt them.
Antonio can understand animals like tigers, so they don't get eaten by them.
Luisa is strong to protect everyone.
Isabela can grow plants to better hide the village from the outside, especially if she uses poisonous plants.
And Mirabel's power this whole time was the ability to keep the family together.

I think Mirabelle is meant to take over as keeper of the magic. The house only actively communicates with Alma and Mirabelle. Its repaired after they make up and work as a group to rebuild without their powers.

Dammit Disney...was so close to not cry but that song about Pedro and Abuela just shreds my heart....I got 2 theory about the candle : 1. It's actually the soul of Pedro in the candle ( the butterfly on it being a dead give away) finally giving a safe home to his family and feeling hurt about how Abuela is treating her family, forgetting the sacrifice and who the miracle is for. 2. The house is Pedro and the candle is his sacrifice...which is why it's fading, because Abuela forgot who the miracle was for...

Mirabel may not have a gift per say, but she does have the power to make the candle go out. If you pay attention you'll see almost every time the magic fades and the house cracks it's when the family bond suffers. Whenever Mirabel feels upset and/or excluded the house cracks. When she reconciles with Isabela the candle shines but it dies when she snaps at the grandma. Maybe Mirabel is a manifestation of the candle itself so her role is now the glue that holds the family together. Maybe the grandma had this power but it was passed to Mirabel.

Apparently they deliberately left Mirabel not getting a gift open to interpretation. Some reckon she already had a gift (empathy) so the house didn't think another one (or rather a more outwardly obvious gift) was necessary. Would also explain why she didn't get a room - sharing the old nursery with others and seeing how she made Antonio feel better by being there.

I think Mirabel's gift is not like a magical one, but it's the family itself. She is center on the door to the new house, she's the heart of the house and the family, the new candle, and the next head of the household. So she's a lot like Abuela, not having magic herself but sorta being the keeper of the miracle.

I have always believed that the moment Mirabel touched the doorknob at age 5, that the power and magic of the candle and house transferred from the grandmother to Mirabel. Mirabet became the new matriarch; she was going to be the one who would continue the family after her grandmother passed on. (And she didn't get "a room" because the whole house was her "room".) The sequences where the house is crumbling are each moments in time where Mirabel is experiencing extreme emotions and coming apart emotionally... and when she falls apart the home/candle does likewise, because they are one.

It is really interesting the approach they took with Abuela's recounting of how their "miracle" happened.
The way she describes it to Maribel at the beginning of the movie gets truly the "Disney" makeover - the background is blacked out ( where the city is getting attacked behind them ), the features are softened and the expressions are much less realistic and "blank" in a way especially considering Pedro was _lost_ still Abuela's grievance was not shown too much and it went directly to the uplifting "miracle" to get Mirabel even more excited by the fairy-tale like background of their family.
The flashbacks are much more heart breaking in comparison, because we get a glimpse into their brief history and the animation is sharper, more realistic and it hints at the actual violence in the background without shying away from raw emotions in the expressions and showing the sadness of separation on Pedro's face ( completely missing the first time ). To me that's the movie way of showing Abuela wants the family to focus on a hero-like origin for themselves, and unconsciously portrays her own husband's sacrifice unrealistically, almost as it required no effort because that's just what "gifted" people are supposed to do, as well as her shifting immediately into matriarch mode the first time with not many tears to spare, while the flashbacks show her desperation and the grief once she's alone with three children in an empty house.
Also - I am inclined to believe that the miracle was actually Abuela's own gift ( not Pedro's ) and the embodiment of wanting to protect her family at all costs - which is then passed onto Mirabel.

I think that missing piece is the lack of a character arc for Mirabel. The family all gets their gifts back and realize how important she is, but Mirabel herself didn’t appear to learn anything or change at all. Story wise her position is different, being appreciated by her family and possibly being Abuela’s successor (though the movie is really ambiguous about that) but character wise she’s completely flat, which result in a lack of catharsis with the ending.
I like this movie a lot, but I do think that’s why it feels incomplete. No arc for the protagonist.

Her mother and father had no problem doing that, but everyone else were literally breaking their backs to appease Abuela Alma. So anything that Alma didn't deem perfect was rebuffed. Her whole purpose was to serve as a parallel to Abuela (Literally. Mirabel's room is directly across the casita from Alma's). Two family members with no gifts, one the found of the home and the other embraced that home to the point where it was treated like an extension of the family.

I think what's different about this Disney movie is that it starts out where most Disney movies END. In the past, the whole _point_ of the Disney movie would BE Mirabel "discovering" that she doesn't need a gift to be special. But in this movie, she starts out already knowing that. So, what could be wrong?
Well, it turns out the _positivity_ is wrong. Everything is cracking, and because everyone in the family knows they have to be positive, helpful, serving, and... _perfect,_ no one addresses the generational trauma. That's _SO much deeper_ than most of the messages of Disney's recent movies. They've all been obvious from the first ten minutes.
    Not this one.
My family is healthy now, thank God, but for most of my childhood and teens, we were very much a "perfect on the outside" family, and we all felt the pressure of maintaining that image.
My older sister couldn't handle it, so she rebelled and left, and when that was swept under the rug, *_*I*_* was swept into the position of the oldest sister. "Surface Pressure" and the plight of the two oldest daughters are so relatable to me: feeling like I had to hold everyone together by being the perfect and good and strong and Right daughter my parents needed.
    MAN, this movie got me.
AND DISNEY GOT THEIR MAGIC BACK. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT.

29:32 Bruno told her "the life of my dreams would be promised and someday be mine" and then we think it's about her becoming engaged to Mariano. Later we realise it means that she'd get the chance to live 'the life of her dreams' (whatever the life she actually wants for herself is) and would eventually live it, and that her powers would go beyond flowers.
And he told Dolores that Mariano would be out of reach and betrothed to another but not that he would actually marry someone else or that he's always be out of her reach.
In any case I know Mariano can be a bit dumb but he also seems like a genuinely nice guy. I also think the thing to do with the dinner would be the old 'I have a headache' line and stay in your room trying to figure out the problem - though I guess it'd be a little suspicious if both Dolores and Miracle had a headache, unless Dolores said it and Miracle said she'd go and check if she needed anything.

And like you said, Isabela's fiancee resembles the grand dad, and people have theorized that's why Abuela wanted Isabela and him to marry (because they remind her of herself and Pedro when she was younger.)

Mirabel is basically the embodiment of hope for the family, just like her Abuelo was when he sacrificed himself. There is a theory that Casita contains his soul. Also, that he was were their magic powers came from. Before he died, he kisses his children and Alma prays for a miracle. He sacrificed himself, and the magic showed up. If you watch again, you'll see that Abuela Alma and Mirabel are the only ones that talk to Casita. Also, Dolores knows that Bruno never left. When she does her solo, she constantly moves Mirabel around to keep her from noticing Bruno walking in the background on the landing. When she sings "Do you understand?" and it does a close-up, Bruno is dancing between them. Also, she literally says "I can hear him now". She always talks about him in the present tense.

And maybe she even started focusing on the family being 'perfect' and focused on the miracle that took place afterwards so that she wouldn't have time to focus on his actually being killed or on the fact that she still misses him and would've wanted to live a regular life with him and their children even with no gifts, no miracles and no magic. And because she hasn't been able to face that memory properly and hasn't been able to mourn him properly she hasn't been able to move on with the next stage of her life properly.

Isabella in "We don't talk about Bruno" says Bruno predict the life of her dreams would be come true.. Hinting the life she lived is not her dreams and highly unlikely to become true until Mirabel make a "bad influence" on her..
So much detail in this film

I'm from Colombia and I cried since the first minute when I saw all the details about my country. Everything was so accurate: the clothes, the food, the music, the animals, the plants... I loved it! They even included a real situation: forced migration. Abuela's story is the story of thousands of colombians, who had to leave their villages because of violence. Disney made an excellent work representing Colombia in this film! 🇨🇴

Maribel's power is the actually the encanto it self, like the grandma, she is responsible to maintain the family together that makes sure everyone is ok, you can see that everyones was unhappy, and that was making the encanto weak, so Mirabel was in the vision to make the encanto stronger, you could see that she can easily understand everyone's perspective even Isabella, while the grandma keep everyone's on a tight leash

One thing i love about Luisa's song, toward the beginning you physically see her getting Mirabel out of these imaginary scenarios but as the song goes on it starts to cut before you actually see what happens. Like when Luisa is hanging on the cliff and they break and fall, it cuts and you see a giant landslide. Or the ship hitting the iceberg, the last thing you see is Luisa jumping at the ice and then next you see them coming to land on a chunk of ice. Everything is crumbling as she's trying to protect her sister and it just keeps slipping more and more as it goes.

Pedro gave the magic to her family. Abuella asked Pedro to help her. He send Mirabel to help the family. Mirabel had Pedro's magic herself- all the house. That's why she didn't had a door inside the house, because her door was the front door of the house, the house is her magic.

Even though the movie doesn't exactly have a villain the grandmother actually caused a lot of the conflict of the movie. She was putting so much pressure on everyone to be perfect. And an example of this happened even before mirabel's problem. Anytime her son Bruno tried to warn everyone when something was wrong everyone blamed him for what happened. He just trying to help everyone. And the grandmother didn't even notice the pressures she was putting on her family that it hurt not only mirabel but everyone else instead of listening. A lot of people say mirabel is unbelievable and unrelatable character. But in reality she is totally relatable. She is someone who has remarkable talented family and is just trying to help her family and prove herself with siblings, cousins, an aunt, uncle, and mom who are magically talented. And why is mirabel's grandmother hard on her when the grandmother has no powers? That makes no sense.

The thing I loved about this movie is that there isn't a definite villain, some of the characters can be defined as "bad guys" but no villain. Each character has flaws but they are still a family and it's shows that they care for the family as a whole but not each person individually.

I guess I’ll be the one to point this out
At 14:17 - 14:19 , you could see Dolores covering her ears from everything being too loud for her. That makes me think that her room isn’t completely soundproof, but it’s very quiet with little to no loud items to give her ears a break from her gift. It also makes me feel really bad for her that in “we don’t talk about Bruno”, her part was in whispering because whispering to her sounds like regular talking, so when she talks regularly to the others, it probably sounds like shouting to her, so if we think reality-wise, like if it was real, she would probably have severe tinnitus due to her constantly hearing everything in a loud speaking level.

We don’t talk about Bruno is one of the best songs in a musical film.
This whole film felt like it could have been on broadway. It was set up as a stage and the story and music followed.
I liked the intricacy of the different textures and movements of the clothes and objects.
The colors were vibrant and each palette felt like a mix of Coco and Moana.
The most amazing part is how Lin-Manuel was able to compose and write this song. He gave each character their own style of music and rhythm that represented their individual personalities. You could recognize a character just by their verse which doesn’t happen in many musicals.
My favorite was Camillo’s part because it represented his mischievous behavior as well as capturing the eeriness that the family believes Bruno has. It was also fun and different.
The camera angles captured the chaos, humor, confusion, and eeriness of the song.

I only just noticed how Mirabel sings 'I can't heal what's broken' at the start, and yet she becomes a key part in doing exactly that with the family's bonds. And her father says 'she takes after you' to her mother, because they do both help to heal people, one physically and one emotionally.

Like the movie started out with the murder of her husband leaving her alone with three babies as well as cuddling up to Miracles showing that she does love her. There is obviously something more happening under the surface.

The new Matriarch is Mirabel. If you look at Mirabel’s dress, it shows every single family member represented included the green glasses showing Mirabel’s love for Bruno who can see the future. You can also say The Candle is sort of a torch to pass onto. First it was Abuela’s responsibility, who wasn’t born with powers but was chosen to hold the miracle for her family until a new leader is born to take over which is Mirabel. However, Mirabel DOES in fact have a power. Not only does she have a strong connection to the house where she was born in, BUT she gifted Antonio a cheetah plush saying “because I know you’re an animal guy”, and now his gift is speaking and understanding animals. Meaning, Mirabel is the candle incarnate who can gift her family members powers.

Most ppl misunderstood what isabela said "I have been perfect my whole entire life" doesn't mean "oh poor me I'm so perfect 🙄" it's like that pressure that everyone expects you to be something that you're not which alot of older siblings feel..its just sad that she never really got to explore her true self cuz since the moment she opened her eyes she's trained to not be herself which is hard and disorienting.

I love Encanto and I have a lot to say so here goes. There is a theory that Abuello became the Casita (they both do the little wave, there are butterflies everywhere which symbolizes his spirit and when Abella and Abuello met, and Casita and Abuello both do everything they can to help and protect the family). Also I believe that Mirabel is the next Keeper of the Candle (Abuela's role). She is the glue that keeps her family together. And she didn't get a door 1) because that position was currently being filled and 2) because she needed to embrace everyone in her family, including herself. Her role is to strengthen and help the family grow, something Abuela thought she was doing, but lost sight of the real reason for the miracle. Abuela has been mourning her husband for 50 years (throughout the movie she wears a black shawl to symbolize this) but after the scene with Mirabel she no longer wears it. I also love that the first thing Abuela does after opening up to Mirabel is hug Bruno symbolizing her embracing the future.

Timothee, at 41:55, you said something that gave me a theory about Mirabel. Maybe that's why Mirabel didn't get a Gift from the house. Because her Gift IS the house.
Think about it. She is the character most in connection with the house. After Mirabel finds and fixes Bruno's vision, the house moves the furniture to hide the vision from other members of the family. The cracks appear most when Mirabel is stress. And the house finally falls apart when Mirabel and Abuela have their big argument.
It's only a theory, but between this and another video that mentioned a theory that Mirabel might become the next Abuela (the only other Madrigal that doesn't have powers), I'm getting pretty convinced.
Edit: Oh, and the person who helps bring back the house to life is Mirabel. Coincidence? I think not! (Extra points if you got the reference).

I think of Mirabel staying on the side even before Antonio’s Gift succeeds. When she’s standing behind Alma when Tonito is opening the door, she is visually in the dark, the candle only shining on Abuela’s face. Idk if what im saying with the way I worded it makes sense but I like to think it’s symbolism
Lastly, I love how when Mirabel has so many emotions able to be inflected with just one word “casita” when she converses with it.
I could rant on forever about this movie because it is such a unique gem for me, such better quality than some other Disney movies.
I love the subtlety and nuance in this movie (and I should not relate this dang hard with the mental problems the family faces. Ex: Luisa forced to be perfect (anxiety/stress for me), Isabela being forced to be perfect (perfectionism, etc), Bruno, etc.)
Like maybe I’m reading into it too much like I do when I analyze a lot of things (like the writer I am), but for a kids movie, this is powerful stuff packed in a relatively short movie that was done well and not r u s h e d. I just wished we had more info on the other grandkids like Camilo, Dolores, and just Bruno cuz he didn’t get a song or much of a backstory :(
Like someone who has these problems, like panic attacks and breakdowns, I w i s h Alma had apologized for the long standing effects of what she forced upon her family (despite her good intentions)
Like I don’t believe the apology she gave to Mirabel and the others fully made up for all she did to them mentally and emotionally over g e n e r a t i o n s
As a tangled the series fan, am I the only one who gets Varian vibes from Bruno????!!!! (I NEED to know)
What really struck me hardest was, “I will never be good enough for you. No matter how hard I try.”
Damn it, I relate to that so hard with how much I berate and deprecate myself (I have very low confidence and self esteem)

encanto fun facts that some people overlook/don’t realise:
    DOLORES
    - in we don’t talk about bruno she sings “i CAN always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling”
    - he’s also lurking in the background of her verse
    - after her second verse about her dream guy Dolores says “it’s like i hear him now” x2 and “i can hear him now!” talking about Bruno not about her hearing Mariano
    - and of course the obvious “yo, i knew he never left i heard him every day” i mean come on. her door was right next to the painting entrance
    - her prophecy was somewhat true in that the man of her dreams was just out of reach, but then Isa found her true self and started doing things for herself (what else can i do lyric; what could i do if i knew it didn’t need to be perfect? it just had to be, and they let me be) and in doing so Isa left Mariano and Mirabel introduced them
    - Dolores wouldn’t have spilled the secret about the vision to ruin the proposal, she kept Bruno’s presence in the Casita on the DL for obvious reasons that Bruno explained himself, she would’ve done it because it was the entire family potentially in danger not just her emotions feeling overwhelmed
    -
    ISABELA
    - in bruno’s vision he said “you embrace her” assuming a physical embrace like a hug, but not only this it’s embracing Isabela in all she truly is
    - when Isa’s flowers pop up all over her head after Dolores said Mariano wants 5 babies, Abuela picks off the one white flower before calling her perfect
    - in her verse in WDTAB it sounded like what she already had but it was talking about what she dreamed of and what she dreamed of would’ve been her being herself and not what was expected of her. “he told me that my power would grow like the grapes that thrive on the vine” see; the entire song of what else can i do
    -
    PEPA/FÉLIX
    - Abuela made Pepa feel like she couldn’t let her emotions be expressed too openly and to suppress them unless they were bright and sunny but Bruno and Félix were the only ones that tried to get her to do so, no matter what weather she created (as mentioned in all of you. also the chords from let it go are played in the back when Bruno tells her to let it go)
    -
    LUISA
    - in surface pressure, the song choreographed with the awesome dancing donkeys, she talks about if she could shake the crushing weight of expectation, could it free up some time for rest or relaxation. in the end, the donkeys throw her onto a hammock and give her a cool drink (which is filled with ice from Pepas beautiful hailstorm)
    -
    MIRABEL
    - when she walks Antonio to his door for his ceremony, Toñito walks her to the door at the end holding her arm the same way
    -
    BRUNO
    - home slice was immensely misunderstood.
    - “he said my fish would die” it’s a fish. if the conditions aren’t right or if it’s freakin old or unhealthy it’s gonna die
    - “he said i’d grow a gut” check your diet.
    - “he said my hair would fall out!” what are your genetics like, did your father also face hair loss?
