    Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter-an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins “Turning Red" launches exclusively on Disney+ on March 11, 2022.

    I believe that this is the first Disney/Pixar that really focuses on adolescence, puberty and periods even. I have never ever seen any kids movie that normalized periods. It’s still something that no one talks about but we should because it’s part of our everyday lives and for people who get periods, it’s crucial to our health.
    I think this movie was a great way to show the emotional rollercoasters teens go through.

    In the scene where the mom turns into a panda I don’t think she’s just mad at Mei Mei’s disobedience. I think it’s also the fact that her mother and her sisters are criticizing her parenting methods. The saying “children are a reflection of their parents” is hard on both kids and parents. Caregivers feel this pressure to raise “perfect” children because any “mistake” the kids make is traced back to them. It must suck to be an adult and still be told that you’re doing things wrong. Also, thank you for being so chill with the whole menstruation scene, a bunch of people were strangely upset about it. P.S the brown color you chose for the hoodie is *chef’s kiss*

    • @BOFAMET
      @BOFAMET 2 года назад +29

      Yeah I read that scene as being Mom's breaking point because she was faced with the overwhelming shame put upon her by her family, and especially her own mother. And she deflects that shame by seeing it as something her daughter "did" to her by her "misbehaving". I don't think Mom would have had the meltdown if her family hadn't dogpiled her about Mei Mei. Plus the subsequent scene where Mom is in the astral plane in her child form really drives the point home - she's carrying so much of her own emotional trauma over feelings of inadequacy ingrained by her own upbringing, and being triggered like she was mentally put her right back in that dark place from her childhood where she was a frightened and lonely child. Ughhhhhh that was such a good moment from a therapeutic standpoint.

    • @Bliquexshi
      @Bliquexshi 2 года назад +11

      I feel like based on her line, ""How could she do this to her own mother?", the main feeling Ming had was anger towards herself rather than towards Mei, stemming from the unresolved childhood stress of hurting her own mother (and intensified by the feeling that she failed yet again and let down her mother and family). Thus, her question was more "How dare she repeat the same mistakes as me?" Since Ming suppressed her feelings as a child instead of resolving them, they got woken back up at full force when Mei acted the same way that she did. She projected herself onto Mei, and her fight with Mei was really just a fight with herself, similar to how Mei raged at herself in a mirror early on in the movie after the notebook incident. They both have a strong habit of carrying guilt and blaming themselves.

    My takeaway was that the human experience and the emotions that come with it are inherently messy.
    When you feel forced to live up to the expectations people place on you (as well as your own), that's what leads to you feeling like you have to suppress parts of yourself.
    On the other hand, when Mei was able to control the intensity of her emotions, it wasn't necessarily her suppressing them, it was her ability to fall back on the love and acceptance she felt from her friends, which cushioned those emotions and gave them space to breathe. Unfortunately, her mom made the mistake of demonizing those emotions for simply existing, leaving no room for Mei to feel okay with being human.
    You could even argue that the reason Tyler bullied Mei so much was because he felt wrong for being more similar to her than he was willing to admit, which made him insecure and led to him projecting a lot throughout to movie. This is why it doesn't surprise me that he let his guard down once he was accepted and celebrated for his common interests at the concert, like you said earlier, it's a blessing to have friends like that who love you for you.

  • @professionalamateur741
    @professionalamateur741 2 года назад +70

    Two notes: one, this is my personal take on Priya, but I don’t think she puts less effort into supporting Mei or anything, she just seems like a lower energy person. She still supports and loves her friends, she is just less hyper about it.
    Two, I kind of get what Mei says at the end about missing how it was. While it was a burden, it was also simpler. She didn’t need to actually communicate with her parents and she felt like her life was great as long as she followed it according to schedule, which I understand. My parents’ plan was “graduate high school with scholarships and good grades, go to college with a good degree, get a job, get married, have kids,” so everything needed to help get to the end goal. But what Mei has now is still better, even if it is hard in a different way. The communication and openness is worth it, because her relationship with her family is so much better!
    This reaction was great, btw!

    In terms of your question as to why Ming Lee put so much pressure on Mei Mei when she hated it herself, I think it has to deal with a cycle of perfection. Ming's mother wanted her to be the obedient perfect daughter, and she felt obligated to do so. Ming grew up, and, presumably not wanting her daughter to grow more independent from her, unintendedly repeated the cycle. The fight at the end perfectly allows both of them to get all of the feelings they'd bottled up about each other out, and grow closer as a result

    Luca was a coming-of-age dramedy, while Turning Red is a coming-of-age comedy.
    Visually, Mei’s red panda design is a nod to Miyazaki’s Totoro, the humor of shape-shifting to and back is reminiscent to the comedic nature of Ranma 1/2, and the human character designs look similar to the work of Aardman (of Wallace & Gromit fame).
    And finally, the movie itself with the scenario on the conflict between mother and daughter? It’s something explored before in Brave (though in the modern times). Growing up and not knowing how to handle these changes you’ve known as a little kid.

    The way people in the comments on 'Turning Red' videos about their parents and a complete lack of privacy makes me think of that slightly infamous scene from the email episode of 'The Fairly Odd Parents', the one where the parents knock and call out to their kids:
    "What are you doing in there?"
    and then narrate:
    "I'm both respecting your privacy by knocking but asserting my authority as your parents by COMING IN ANYWAY!"
    and then proceeds to break down the door with a battering ram.

My daughter already knows about it. Girls are getting it younger and younger. She does not know about sex but, knows once you get it you can have babies. It's important to inform them before so they don't think they are dying. Gosh I'd be terrified if I didn't know.

    Lmao, Mei Mei twerking to gross out her mom made me laugh so hard.
    Love that they didn't hide periods or anything like that. It's similar to "Luca"in that its a teenage coming of age story with a transformation, but thats about it. Mei is pretty open about being her red panda in front of her classmates, while Luca and Alberto hide their "sea monster"side from the town.

    I believe the "You only have one chance" thing is to do with how often the red moon happens and the bond between the person and their panda.
    When they first get the panda the bond is weak, it is difficult to keep the emotions and panda at bay. The more they let the panda out the more it breaks that resistance and the easier it becomes for them to both transform and to manage their emotions, but it also makes it harder to seperate them during the ceremony as the connection between them is stronger.
    For the older family members they have already broken that bond once and trapped the panda spirit away, because they had been seperate for so long it was easy for them to do it again.

    I watched the movie yesterday with my family, despite not being fully Chinese/Asian I still felt the pressure of being a perfect child which, like Mei Mei, resulted in me rebelling. However, we definitely found it hilarious as well as touching. My mom was like you on Ming going through because she's unable to control her emotions, my mom said they should've pushed Ming through first because she doesn't need her panda going loose if that's how she's gonna be every time lol. I'm surprised Ming's is the biggest out of them all and I wondered why hers was so angry but knowing the generational trauma it shows why hers might be so angry. As for the size..... that's another thing lol. Loved this movie though and loved your reaction to it.

    • @brokenfoxx
      @brokenfoxx 2 года назад +3

      I thought maybe Ming didn't want to give her panda up, but it was more something she was forced into. And I think it's where there's some added fear for her daughter knowing it's coming and Mei's personality. I think Ming would have chosen the same as her daughter if she'd been given the choice when she was younger (and now at this point, it's too late to be able to keep her). But being forced into giving up something she saw as a great gift (going by her tone in how she told the story), I could see how her panda would grow in size due to resentment and all the pressure Ming felt/faced. At least that's how I saw it. I could be completely wrong, and I'm a complete outsider on this, so this is what I've gotten from the information in the movie.

The drama is real, neverending and everything is the end of ones life.

    And something that one does not understand as a child is that although parents become a little or quite irritating, many are because they have already gone down that path and although no one learns through someone else's head, they want to prevent one from making the same mistakes or situations. Sometimes when you are a teenager you want to do everything because we are no longer children, because others of that age already do it, because everyone does it or just because and we don't think about later. Then when something goes wrong we complain and we lament because we didn't wait or because we didn't listen. But that is up to each individual.

    I think the "we only have one chance" thing when they have multiple is for several reasons. Not only would it be immensely more difficult the second time, but also the mother wants to make Meilin think there's only one chance to make her more determined to do it right. Only after it fails does she immediately admit they can try again, and that the pressure was just for the sake of perfection.

  • @Kittsuera

    the one chance to banish it and can not fail is imo the sort of exaggeration people tend to say when they want to empathize the importance of getting it right the first time because the next chance could be many months to years.
    but the harder to separate the two the more its released is the more accurate issue. she was struggling to push through because of how much it had fused to who she was becoming. the others had no resistance because it had not been released as often and thus not a strong part of who they were.
    the darkness part is when their eyes turn red. they become overwhelmed by the emotion and act without regard to the consequences.
    irl that darkness exists even with no physical panda to represent it.
    Mei Mei had full control of her panda so she could put the emotions into action in the exact precision of when and where it needed to be expressed.

    I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason.
    But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time.
    (Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.)
    People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them.
    If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.

    I guess what they meant by "one chance" is really just a way to really emphasize how important it was in the family to get rid of the Red Panda Spirit so they can go back to their normal lives. Basically they can do the ritual as long as there is a Red Moon, but those only show up every couple of years, and they said the Spirit gets harder to separate in the ritual, the more you use it.
    So the question remains, when Mei hustled the Panda so many times at school, and the ritual showed her struggling to separate from it, was her choice of keeping it really her choice, or the Panda's influence? Because her Grandma, Aunties, and Mom got rid of theirs with ease.

    I could be wrong but I think when they say you only have one chance to suppress the panda, doesn't mean 1 time to do the ritual, I think they mean 1 red moon. If you dont suppress it by the end of the red moon cycle then the connection between panda and person are to strong when the next red moon comes around, as for the rest of the family they had completed the ritual so they have been separated from there panda the whole time. They reconnected with there panda in the emergency for a very few min. Then reseperated before the end of the red moon cycle, in theory they could release there pandas each red moon but each time it would get harder each time.

    I can''t believe I'm head over heels for a Pixar movie(I've always thought them overrated), maybe it's because I'm chinese(teochew though, not cantonese). But the animation in this movie is the best so far, especially the koi pond & cooking scene(putting Ratatouille to shame). The 2000s ipod ad-like end credit also showcased how realistic they animated hair & fabric movements(putting Brave to shame).
    But the best thing is how they adapted things from animes without making it cringey, from the sparkly eyes & kitty mouths, Totoro, Ranma 1/2, Godzilla, even the scene where Mei shucks off her hanfu while jumping over a streetcar looks like a nod to The Girl Who Jumped Through Time.

    I think the reason why they said she’d only have one chance is because as they said it’s harder to perform the ritual the longer you go turning into the panda. If you waited years it’ll probably be so much a part of you that you couldn’t do the ritual anymore

    He said the song itself didn’t matter as long as it came from the heart. Grandma just liked tradition

    About the one chance line. It basically means one chance while the red moon shines, if they don't do it before that red moon passes, they are stuck with it. To be fair, the movie doesn't particularly make that clear, but I believe that is what is meant by "one chance". Not just that they do it once and that's it.
