The shaman said in an earlier scene that they don't have to sing the chant and that the grandma is just old fashioned lol
Maybe. Maybe the grandma comes from the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” generation.
I mean, it still worked.
Yes it said somewhere they have to “sing from the heart” ngl that 4Town song is kinda a bop😫💃🏽
Yeah you just had to sing from your heart That's what he said.
Yeah.
Yeah, the important part was to sing loud and from the Heart
29:44
The shaman said that doesn't matter what song you sing, it's imporatnt that it comes from the heart.
In fact Robaire (the leader of the 4 town) was shedding a tear while singing, for the passion he was putting into it
Her grandma's just a bit of a traditionalist so she insisted that they do the chant in Cantonese
Yes
Uuuuuuuu
Part of me also thinks that Robaire is so GOOD that he's rehearsed dropping a single tear every time he sings that song 😄
I think Robaire could’ve single handedly saved Mei’s mom with that final high note 😂
Lol Priya is Indian, Abby is Korean and MeiLin is Chinese so there’s 3 Asian characters as the mains 😭
And also Tyler is half Asian.
@@hierophantpurple5163 that’s cool I did not know that, what is he mixed with? I’m guessing south East Asian and black?
@@Danideeaso Yeah I think so. After seeing his mom I got curious and googled him. His last name is Ngyuen from what I saw online so he's probably half Vietnamese
@@hierophantpurple5163 oh cool I love how diverse the cast is ❤️
How progressive 🙄
I feel awful that poor Pixar is making movies meant for the big screen (literally in the credits for red it says optimized for imax) and Disney is giving them the short end by last minute dumping them on Disney+. They’ve been doing this anytime it’s an original movie and not a sequel for a few years now.
@@OutcastYBJ that it doesn’t get the attention it deserves
@@OutcastYBJ everyone has their own opinion and that’s fine. i personally loved it.

the "let's go lesbians let's go" edit was perfect lmaoo
I loved that edit too, but since Pryia also liked Devon and Jesse, she might be bi or pan.
@@luciakaminski779 That's not pan is but yes.
The shamen didn’t specify that it had to just be the chant. What he DOES say is that whatever is spoken or sung NEEDS to be from the heart, and looking at 4Town, that was clearly from the heart
As an Asian, watching this film. i can't tell you how much i relate to this.
I feel you I’m Ukrainen
My baba was very old fashioned and wanted me to do things in a certain way
Honestly it’s like every Asian’s upbringing in a nutshell😭
As an African, i relate to this too. I think that in general minorities live the same things !!
Priya is also Asian! I understand it might’ve been overlooked but it’s unfortunate when South Asians/Indians are excluded
Oh fr I thought she was black
@@niarahancock4739 yeah same I thought she was mixed, black and white
@@starforce1310 I mean, her name is Priya... and she has a nose piercing. Pretty obvious indications she's Indian.
@@niarahancock4739 her name is priya, it's a dead giveaway
@@zammmerjammer I didn’t know Priya was an Indian name🤔
4:49 She saying "hip hoppers" is the most "mom" thing she could say.
"And why are they called 4-Town if there are 5 of them" or something like that... that was hilarious and similar to my own thought process as a teen listening to 5 Seconds of Summer, which has 4 members.

How could people hate on this movie it's so fun and wholesome oml
Mostly sexist/racist reasons💀
I seen a lot of people relate to the movie meaning they done excellent job.
@@OutcastYBJ The fact that you can’t even put commas or periods makes me hate you with a burning passion.
@@OutcastYBJ Oh wait, just realized you’re a troll lmfao

I really enjoyed it. My favorite part is how her mother acknowledged the damage that she had done. No one needed to tell her. She came to that realization on her own, and I adored that.
18:41 and then you realize in hindsight she was just looking for any excuse to not be there when the rest of the family showed up.
To be honest I should do that too if I meet some of my bloodline that I don’t know of
Fun fact -- the SkyDome is 282 ft. tall. Just so you know how big Ming became.
Oh shi- 😂
idk if you noticed, but she called the panda statues outside Bart and Lisa, after the Simpsons.
I heard Lisa but I missed Bart completely😭
The Bart and Lisa reference also works on another level, as in the contrast between the studious, filial child, and the rebellious, aggressive child.
I don’t trust a person who can draw a perfect circle with CHALK ON A BRICK FLOOR!!!!
That shaman is a serial killer or something. Trust.😂😂😂
Might also apply to Mei's dad who also drew a perfect circle... with a chalk spreader... over the floor of a stadium.
@@rainbowdragonflies1134 can’t trust him😂😂😂
Well the shaman did say he's been doing it for 50 years, so practice makes perfect! ;D
The shaman also searches for young Chinese women with green eyes... for a thing... So, he certainly can not be trusted.
(His voice actor is James Hong, who does David Lopan in Big Trouble in Little China. The BBEG of the movie.)
As a third generation Asian American it wasn't until I was older that I was sad I don't speak Japanese. My Mom doesn't either and my grandmother who did passed years ago. I tried learning a few years ago and didn't put in much effort as I should have. I really need to though. Language is important.
Anyways I really loved this movie. It was a great way to show puberty, the perils of growing up and away from your parents and discovering who you are.
Yeah and parents don’t like their kids growing up and apart from them because they love their kids so much and can’t except that their kids will be a kid for a short time then they’ll grow up and be adults and get married and have kids of their own and then die
Yes, there were lots of giveaways that it's Toronto. She says 'Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan' in class (naming the 3 Canadian prairie provinces), the iconic CN Tower (world's tallest structure 1975-2007) is featured prominently in the skyline, Toronto's red street cars (trams), she got 100% on her French language test (all Canadian kids have to take French in school), and the maple leaf top you mentioned, etc. Btw, Toronto has a massive 'Asian' population (more than London and New York) and multiple China Towns.
Also she calls the temple vandals "hosers" and breakfast has Timbits on the table.
Also the fact that right in the intro, she says that she's now grown up (according to the Toronto bus system).
Don't forget the Canadian flags in front of Meilin's school.
Don't forget the blue $5 bills
I didn't know that! I was a picturing its Chinatown as a little enclave with a few hundred people.
The shaman says it can be any music (he prefers Tony Bennett, lol), but the gran is a traditionalist.
Ohhhh I must’ve missed that!
I love how every girl can relate to this.
And come on! The kitten box test is outright CHEATING. Nobody could resist it! Kittens don't play by the rules!
Ikr lmao
27:22 WAIT I REALISED WHAT THIS REMINDED ME OF-
The end of the school performance (aka Stand Out) in A Goofy Movie when Max and Roxanne were supposed to touch hands before Max flew out. But instead of the person flying on the top, it's the person on the ground who's getting caught.
The resson why at least for me Robaire was crying its because shaman said you have to sing from the heart.
Mei is the first Disney character to have canonically drawn smut
i love this movie and the message- i wasn’t expecting to get as emotional as i did but we all know pixar always gets us in the end! i especially liked that this movie was aiming for an older audience by having teenagers rather than younger kids so that pixar could show off its range, not to mention the representation in the movie AND it was the first ever pixar movie to be solo-directed by a woman! a movie recommendation if you haven’t seen it already is West Side Story- not sure if you’re super into traditional musicals but i know you love disney and i thought that the music and cinematography was absolutely stunning.
@@OutcastYBJ What's your problem? 😂
Such an underrated movie it deserves more love like Encanto. I don't care what anybody thinks!
@@OutcastYBJ you're lame. Don't hate on others opinions. This movie was so good and meant for girl teens to relate to with the emotional breaks they have. Don't speak on it. Her turning into "red panda" is to symbolize a girl getting her step into womanhood.
Underrated???? It got released less than month ago! Give it time.
Encanto wasn't an overnight success, most people that loved and praised it waited to watch it until it was released on Disney+
@@nightnaughty yeah I hope Turning Red will grow to have the same success as Encanto
Btw, yes it actually is in part about getting her period. The jokes weren't coincidental..
Gross red monster.
The way she's walking stiffly when she's in her bedroom? I can confirm that's how we walk when we're trying not to move too much to prevent...an "accident".
"Prevent any accidents."
Curling up in the fetal position because it hurts.
You can even make a case for the extreme emotions thing, cause a lot of us can attest that extreme emotions tend to make it...worse, let's say.
And the friends neutralizing the panda? A way to show that having friends around to help you through it when you have an "accident" can make it less embarrassing.
Also body odour when you start puberty when she mentioned suddenly being smelly when the panda came and when Priya offered her Deodorant when they all noticed her perspiration.
And literally the title of the movie lol ‘Turning Red’
One thing I am confused about though is, if the red panda represents puberty, why does she turn back to normal when she is calmed down? What I mean is, with puberty you can't turn it off. I just want someone to explain it to me. I am 27 so I should probably know this, lol.
NOT THE CHA CHA SLIDE IT'S TO POWERFUL
THE BEST
Loved you vibing to the concert! We want a full 4 Town album now!!
Honestly!! Their songs were bangers I can’t lie
Very pleasant suprise - every pixar movie is unique in some way (more or less), even the not so popular ones and this one has added few more layers. Love it!
"oh no 75% (asian child trauma)"
as an asian kid im even scared to get 80% on tests
I also relate to the fact that im not fluent in my own language (Filipino)
I remember the first time I got a B in a test when I was like 14, I cried my eyes out in the middle of the classroom and the only person who could comfort me was my Chinese friend🥲
@@MonicaCatapusan Lmao
98% was my cut off. I learned to forge my mom's initials. And my teacher said "its very good, took me a while to figure out but why are you forging your mom's initials you're doing well". my response. "because its not a 105%". my teacher😮 "............but these tests don't have bonuses....." I told him "I know." my teacher slowly realizing what a Chinese tiger mothers expectations are even after years of teaching.
As African I can relate you, I'M SCARED TO GET BELOW 90%
A very good film, the characters are also very cute and the voices of the characters are very good. Your hair is also very pretty match the "turning red 🦊"
Let’s all admit something
*Panda Mei Is FREAKING ADORABLE!*
You're reaction to her punishing/shaming herself for being a normal teenager makes me sad not because of you but because I remember doing that to myself growing up. I put soooooo much pressure on myself and had the same kind of inner monologue whenever I would do something embarrassing. It makes me sad for myself that that was my experience and now learning from the movie that it is other girls' experiences, too. I will say I am happy for you that that idea seems so foreign!!
I love how this shows that you can have a very loving and supportive family but still have a toxic family environment
I love how they just immediately let Tyler into the friend group AND in the ending, you can see him with a friendship bracelet like everyone else- and we love Tyler for not being the toxic boy who thinks boy bands are too girls or whatever-
24:11
To be fair, I as a HongKonger born and raised in HongKong, really had a hard time understanding the song grandma and anties sang. I mean I can guess what's the word but not very certain. Cause those are not phrases you use in daily life. I would say they are more of Classical Chinese used in the old days. And let's not forget that similar to Mandarin, Cantonese is also a tonal language. Tones are the key to understand a word, which makes it really difficult to be sure of words in lyrics. Cause if you sing it, it's definitely gonna be different from its original tone.
Nice reaction! Loved the film, very different than other Pixar films

Thank you so much! Such a fun movie
I don't blame you for missing the Canada hints, because you are clearly caught up in the delight of the story. Anyone who enjoys something that much is allowed to miss a few details!
Lol so yes Meilin (or Mei) is Chinese Canadian that lives in Chinatown based in 2002 (it’s hinted the entire time from the monologue to money - the major clue is when she answers questions on Canada in the introduction video and learning of the 4*Town tour at dinner - of course the Canadian shirt too…🥴). Her friends Miriam is White (Jewish maybe?), Priya is Indian, and Abby is Korean (she speaks Korean a lot in the film when she has a lot of energy - similar to Mei when she turns into the Panda)! The diversity is huge!!!
27:18 - I've seen this clip a bunch now, but I JUST noticed that 4*TOWN is making the number "4" with their legs when they rise in the air 😄 That's some AMAZING attention to detail!!
Omg that’s so cool, I never noticed that before either!!

Incredible reaction ❤️ I just subscribed.
What I love is that this movie so clearly shows that there was no one right way to be and no one choice that was empowering for everyone. The best choice for Mei to be true to herself was to keep the panda, but the best choice for Ming to be true to herself was to transform it, because they were both very different people with very different pandas. For Mei, her panda was a source of happiness and expression and fun and authenticity, but for Ming, her panda was a source of trauma and pain and made her LESS authentically herself and who she wanted to be. And I'm so glad the moral of the story wasn't that "they all just needed to learn to love and accept their pandas and let them out." Because while that was demonstrably the right choice for Mei, it was demonstrably the wrong choice for Ming. Even Sun Yee presented all of them with the choice, and behaved lovingly towards all of them, whatever they chose, without judgement or disappointment - she held the portal letting them transform their pandas if they wanted to, and flew with Mei when Mei chose to keep hers - she helped ALL of them in their choices. And what I love is that Ming DID learn to love her panda, when she was able to take the choice to transform her panda into something that couldn't hurt or traumatize her anymore, so she got to be herself and love on her panda in the tamogotchi. It doesn't make Ming fake or wrong or "not accepting/loving herself" or not being authentic, and I'm so happy that both choices were presented as equally valid and empowering when they truly were made as each individual's CHOICE, and not forced or expected.
It's so important to me that this movie shows that making the empowering choices that are true to yourself and allow you to be your true self may be opposite choices to the people around you, including the people you love. By the very end, both Mei and Ming respect each other's choices, are not judgemental or disappointed, and recognize that their way wasn't the only right one. The right choice for one person may be completely opposite from LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE and that is okay, and making the "expected" or "societally approved" choice doesn't mean you are any less authentically yourself than the person who is breaking the mold, if that choice is truly authentic to you.
I never watched this movie for a couple of months. I thought by the thumbnail that it would be a movie for little girls and that I would hate it. Something about the premise of this movie kept drawing me to it though and I finally gave it a chance. I wasn't expecting the clever, nuanced and subversive piece of work that it was. I was blown away. It's excellent throughout, but it kicks up a couple of gears after Mei betrays her friends. That scene in the car with no dialogue as her Mom drives her home and her Mom puts her hand on her....oh wow - just awesome. The Dad's speech to her, the whole red moon ritual scene which was pure genius and will go down as a classic piece of animation. Probably my most favourite scene is when she explodes into the air, we get a slow motion smile as it dawns on her just how much power she has within her, then proceeds to bound and leap over the rooftops to the SkyDome. Have you heard the score that accompanies that scene? It is absolutely fantastic. The bit where she falls into the SkyDome makes me tear up every time....just awesome. The resolution in the bamboo forest where she meets her mother as a little girl, recounting the night she attacked Mei's Grandma is absolutely beautiful. Absolute genius. Clever subversive script, endlessly quotable lines, laugh out loud funny and utterly heartbreaking. Just so ridiculously good, it's untrue. A massively under appreciated gem. I love it!
I love this movie it's just I wish there was a bit more of the dad he's my favorite character
He was so precious🥺
I see many others have pointed out that the shaman says you only have to sing from the heart. But he added," Me, I like Tony Bennett. But your grandmother is more traditional."
(Personally, I think Robaire is crying because he doesn't want to be eaten by a panda. 😄)
In Brave, Merida yells,"I'd rather die than be like you" at her mother, just as Mei here yells,"And I'll never be like you!" just before knocking her unconscious.
Haha the Shaman mentioned he often did it to Tony Bennett :).

2:25 There's a deleted scene explaining how this photo was taken; you can watch the scene on RUclips. In it, around the holidays/Christmastime, Ming and Mei go take a holiday picture, but instead of using Western decorations and props, Ming had brought all the props and decorations you see in this picture herself. The only difference was that Jin, Mei's dad, wasn't there. Ming asks Mei how she looks, and she adorably says "You look SO beautiful mommy! How do I look?" and instead of saying "Beautiful/pretty," she says "Perfect." Ming's standards have affected Mei since the beginning, even when she meant well.
I LOVE IT ❤️😍❤️😍❤️
I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason.
But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time.
(Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.)
People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them.
If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.
*10:42** Mei: AWOOGA!*
*Me: LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO🤣*
