Bruno resembles his father. He's selfless, loves his family enough to separate himself from them and 'sacrifice' himself if that means that his family would be happy. Just like his father did.

It really shows the connection of him and his father. Just another thing, I can see why they showed him as bad, because no one really knew as much as abuela did about the father. In we don't talk about bruno, one of Dolores lyrics is "Always left abuela and the family fumbling" somewhat how abuela's husband sacrificed himself and ditched for abuela and the 3 children with her. Also they look similar too.

According to the writer/director, Bruno actually made the vision ritual up himself. He *could* have visions without it, but he found them so stressful and taxing that he created the ritual to help focus and emotionally prepare himself. It became something of a crutch for him, and added to his superstitious nature, the ritual is now necessary in his mind.

I expect he does that with bigger visions, life changing events...whereas for smaller stuff he'd just think ahead and tell the person out loud. I can't imagine he'd go through all the trouble of climbing his big tower and everything just to tell the priest he'd go bald, for instance, and I doubt anyone in town would want to wait that long for a minor vision.

It's not that she was hugging abuela in the vision. The vision showed Maribel hugging Isabela because it was a necessary step. That hug was the catalyst for Mirabel to realize what the real problem was-the fact that they were all so pressured to use their gifts the "proper" way and be who abuela/the community needed them to be, that they weren't being their true selves and it was breaking them apart. It started fixing itself when Mirabel helped Isabela finally let go of the pressure to be perfect, and just create the things SHE wanted to create, for once. It made Isabela happy, and it strengthened their bond, and the candle, all at once.
Its subtle, but it happens with Pepa, too. The whole movie, Abuela keeps chastising her that "she's thundering" or that she's raining on them, basically reminding her to "keep her gift in check". But then at the end, Bruno tells her to "let it rain, let it snow, let it go" and after that you see her dancing in the rain, no longer struggling to repress her gift, and embracing it instead.

      @notestasiskis 2 года назад +304

I also like the idea that who she was hugging in the vision is Abuela as a young woman. She looked a lot like Isabela when she was younger and needed to be embraced. Yes, hugging Isabela was a catalyst for everything that happened after, but also Abuela's past self needed healing as well.

Long ago, I came across a theory on why Casita fell to pieces that ties into your comment quite nicely.
According to the person who posted, the house's magic existed because their was a strong sense of harmonious balance within the family. But the moment Mirabel started doubting her worth, Casita's magic started to crack.
As the movie went on, Alma kept putting too much importance on her family's gifts; which in turn placed LOADS of pressure on the children (as shown through Luisa.) The final nail in the coffin came when Alma kept stubbornly insisting that it was Mirabel's fault things were going wrong

But we're also assuming that Bruno's vision HAD to give a solution to the problem. It didn't. Bruno's visions tell the future, they don't necessarily answer questions. So if she was shown the hug with Isabella it was not something she needed to do, but something that was just going to happen. Which it did.

  • @videohistory722

Its actually very subtle: her gift is the same as Abuela Alma's. She's connected to the house itself. That's why she can communicate with it, and why the house doesn't come back alive until SHE puts the doorknob in.
Or, in other words, her door was the house's FRONT door!
Note: I made this comment before I heard her say the same thing. But now it's basically confirmed!

    • @mastelsa

I think there's also another layer to it too--she's not just attuned to the house as in the physical building; she's attuned to the House as in the entire family. Mirabel spends her hero's journey checking in with and learning about the actual needs of her family members that are going neglected because Abuela's approach to everything is still being informed by her grief and trauma. Her gift is seeing what's wrong--the metaphorical cracks in the family, including Abuela--and helping patch them up. She just doesn't need magic to do it.

    1. The colorful river that they show us in the movie is a real river, is called Caño Cristales. It is known as the most beautiful river in the world.
    2. In Luisa's song, when the second verse begins, Luisa and Mirabel fall into a coffee grinder
    3. The plates where Bruno's visions are seen, are emerald. Colombia is the largest exporter of emerald in the world.
    4. All the gifts of the family represent something Colombian. Pepa represents the country's varied and rare climate. Camilo the variety of races and ethnic groups of the country. Dolores gossip. Antonio biodiversity. Isabela the flora. Juliet the gastronomy. Luisa the work of the Colombian, could we say (?
    5. All the clothes you see in the movie, including hats, are cultural from all over the country. That is why it is disrespectful to us that Disney sells it.
    6. Candles represent a lot in our culture, in fact we have a day dedicated to lighting candles. Hence why the candles in the movie.
7.The palma de Cera that is mentioned in Isabela's song, and seen throughout the town, is the national tree of Colombia, and is the largest type of palm in the world.
    8. The yellow butterflies represent one of the novels by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a Colombian literature Nobel Prize winner.
    9. Violence in Colombia is a very big issue, which continues to be experienced to this day. In the grandmother's past we can see Forced Displacement. Colombia is the country with the most internally displaced people in the world.

  • @danielwarren7110

I live in Colombia, this movie got so many things right but non-Colombians missed the significance of the Yellow butterfly. In One hundred Years of Solitude which was written in the 60's and is one of the most important pieces of literature in Colombia the yellow butterfly signifies infinite love and hope. With all the cultural references in the movie there is no way the writers do not know this. The original script was meant to take place over one hundred years as a nod to Gabriel Garcia Marquez's book, this is a man who won the Nobel prize for literature. And specifically wrote magical realism which is how Disney categorised this movie. There are over 3,400 different butterflies in Colombia of all different colours and shades. So the choosing of this from this culture and from this country is not a mistake. Mirabel heals the home by having infinite love for her family and hope for the future. This is what allows her to forgive her Grandmother, the house knows this from the beginning she is the heart of the family, the heart of the home, she does not get a door at the beginning because the house knows the home is breaking. But she has the best relationship with the house through out.
    I enjoyed your reaction.

I really liked how when Isabela finally admitted she didn't wanted to marry that guy she created a cactus. It's like the completely opposite of what she's has been doing her whole life. Flowers are simetrical, pretty, they smell nice. Her powers reflected the way she behaved and when she finally broke free she learned that her powers are about creating any type of plant (which, may I say, it's much cooler than just flowers).

It's even cooler when you look back earlier on and realize something. Bruno's vision for Isabela: "He told me that the life of my dreams would be promised and someday be mine. He told me that my powers would grow like the grapes that thrive on the vine." She clearly was not living the life she dreamed of, pressure of perfection and marrying a man she didn't want to for the family's sake despite knowing Dolores likes him. Her smile following the surprise of hearing he wants 5 kids there looks forced. It was after the proposal went horribly wrong and she lashed out admitting she never wanted to marry him that her powers finally "grew" as she realized she could make more than just pretty flowers. That she didn't have to make things perfect. That SHE didn't have to be perfect, the way her family and the community has become to expect. She just had to be herself.
Bruno's vision there actually seems like it had been predicting that event, but without context of the situation that led to it.

We're the number 1 country with people suffering forced displacement from their hometowns (almost 8.3 MILLION people last year), so this movie really hit way too close to my heart as a colombian woman. Also, i think the movie is about the family trauma left by this forced displacement, and to see how at the end of it that "trauma chain" is finally broken it's beautiful and feels so comforting.

Abuela said "everyone gather round!" And she didn't move. So, on the one hand, she kinda isolated herself there... but on the other... all that negative talk and patronization she's been dealing with since she didn't get a door must be REALLY internalized for her to assume she's not welcome in the picture, even though the uncles who don't have powers are in it.

She's also been dealing with the family her whole life though, so it's not out of the question that either she was told not to join once before, or that she in the past didn't join bc she felt outcast, only to have it confirmed when nobody ever told her to come get in the picture. It can't ALL be her internalization, because nobody else in the family seems to notice or even care that she's not in it.

I love the fact that EVERY time I watch a reaction video to this movie I see something new! Like in the picture Camilo is low on the ground to put his arm around Antonio, that mixed with his concern about how Antonio will feel about losing his powers, he must really adore his little brother. Or the scene after that where Pepa is walking past with a cloud and she eats something and it makes her cloud go away, so she had a snack amd it made her feel better lol. That's so adorable, I'm usually distracted by Agustin being robbed by Antionas minions lol. The way he has his animals running rampant all over the place the whole movie youd think he was far more mischievous than Camilo's douting ass ever was lol

That combined with Luisa basically choke holding Mirabel in the family photo makes me think their pretty close and we barely got to see any of that. You are SO right. Mirabel's door was the front door, which is why her first door ceremony didn't work. Her gift is to be the heart of the family, and eventually the head of the community like Abuela. Every door had the character in the middle etched more brightly, with the depiction of their power around them in lighter etching. The new front door has Mirabel in the center in brighter etching, and her family around her more lightly, confirming that this was meant to be her door all along, and her room is the whole Casita.
I also watched on Christmas Eve, with my family. ❤️ And I truly loved Luisa's song as well. And my best friend is Filipino, so when you referred to Isabella as Mirabel's "Ate" it made me smile

I also don't understand why the house didn't accommodate Bruno better if it assist to look after the family, the house should have moved to accommodate Bruno in the walls. I was really saddened when Mirabel said she was living in the nursery all the time after no getting a room.

@@claireevelyn3379 My assumption is that the door appeared at all to determine Mirabel's Gift. Each gift of the family members is connected to something they are passionate about. Antonio, the animal lover, literally becomes the king of animals as he touches his door. The same thing happened with Mirabel. The door appeared because of a family member reaching the required age for their gift. When Mirabel touched the door, her passion for her family came through, together with her gift of being the miracle of the family that holds them together. In other words becoming the new candle, which is supposed to fix the family and which is why the actual candle fades as she touches her door. Her door then disappeares because her actual door is supposed to be the front door, the heart of the home of her family. I'm guessing after Abuela passes away, her room will shift into one that matches Mirabel only for herself, like the other doors and she will become the new head of the family. So in conclusion, the door appeared to "scan" her gift and then disappeared because she became the miracle, replaced the candle and her magic of being the glue in the family going beyond an individual power like the rest. Besides, this could be a stretch, so I rather see is just as a Headcanon of mine.. but the nursery in which she was living is a room that could be connected with something healing or comfort through love, right? I think that may be another connection to Mirabel literally healing the family and learning that they are all longing for love without any pressure in different ways.

  • @starsantheoriginal
    @starsantheoriginal 2 года назад +581

It's not that Mirabel didn't get a gift, it's because Casita chose her to be the next head of the family. Abuela Alma was able to summon the magic through immense and intense fear and loss and desire to protect. The magic appeared from how strongly she felt that. But over time, abuela started to lose sight of what was important. So the cracks had been appearing for years. But pay attention, all the kids going to their doors had an idea in mind of what they wanted to have for a gift. Mirabel only had one thing in mind. She wanted to make her family proud because she loved her family so intensely. So Casita didn't give her a gift because her love was going to power the magic. Her passion for her family shows once she is older. She makes sure to be skilled in so many things, yet makes no big deal out of it. She sews all her own clothes, puts intricate details in them. She crafts all the gifts for the family, she is a literal parcor champ, plays the accordion perfectly, dances beautifully, can sing. She is literally the actual gifted child in a family. She does all that without magic. And she is the first one up every day to get the table and everything ready for her family. She is literally the most dedicated member of the Madrigals. And she is literally the only one who could openly converse back and forth with Casita. But the family all act as if she just gets in the way. Even her mother who clearly lives and supports her doesn't really acknowledge all the great and talented things Mirabel does. And easily believes she is making things up when she shows zero evidence of doing so prior.
And then look at the end of the movie, who is at the forefront on the door, it's Mirabel. I imagine that she now will have her own door and everything in the house, similar to how abuela has a door, but no actual gift. But the only reason that Casita was able to come back to life was because Mirabel powered it back with the love she has for her family.

I love this explanation, I basically took it the same way. That mirabels gift is the house and the family. She’s basically the glue that holds everything together. That’s why she’s in the front of the house in Bruno’s vision and when he was moving the vision back in forth the house was cracked and then right back whole again. But when people saw his vision they just assumed mirabel is the reason for the house being cracked but in actuality the family holding in so much emotion is the reason the house was cracked and mirabel is the one that figured out how to piece everything back together. Bruno’s vision was basically telling him that the house is falling apart and only mirabel has the gift to figure out how to fix it. That’s why towards the end abuela says to mirabel something along the lines of “I asked my Pedro for help and I didn’t realize he sent me you”

She is the candle in human form, every time she loses hope about the family their power fades. She has a door but it’s the front door. She can predict the powers like she did with Antonio, or help change them like she did with Isabella. Her dress was a clue the whole time. Everyone has their power represented on their dresses, Mirabel has the butterfly from the candle on her top, and all the others powers embroidered on her skirt. And because she is the candle she understands the house (Casita) more. 💃

If you look at the second floor behind Mirabel and Dolores you can actually see Bruno sneaking across and when Dolores is saying her last line, you can see Bruno just standing up there watching them (at this moment if you really watch him, Bruno is actually bopping is head to the music.
Dolores is my favorite of all the family members. I love her character so much and the little details throughout her character that would otherwise go unseen/unrecognized. Since she has the power to hear everything at all times it has givin her sensory overload which is actually the reason why she talks fast. Dolores can't really turn her power on and off, it's more like she changes the intensity. We also never get to see the inside of her room which raised question and someone reached out to ask what her room would have looked like, everyone's room is a reflection of their powers and it was said that their powers can become stronger or more prevalent at night when they're asleep, since there do seem to be a few moments where Dolores could have heard something she could have used to help Mirabel but she didn't like when Mirabel was talking to Bruno but she could hear Luisa's eye twitching all night cause there rooms are close together which points to Dolores having a room filled sound proof wall foam square things
Something else interesting is that Mirabel has more that a gift... She is actually the miracle itself. The family works kinda like a choir and Misabel is the next conductor. Only working together in unison can they be the best they can be. If one person is off in a choir then it all falls apart. Abuela is the only other person in the family with no power because she was the first conductor and the miracle knows someone will need to take Abuela's place and it chose Misabel.

i think that mirabel walking with antonio is the only reason that it worked. notice how on all of the doors that abuela helped the kids get depicts them as adults even when they’re kids? that’s because she was focused on how they can help the future of the family. Whereas mirabel wants them to be happy in the present which is why antonio is shown as a child on the door. I think that mirabel is going to be the new leader of the family once abuela passes and all of the doors that she helps others get with show they look at the present moment.

as someone who is technically the second oldest but oldest brother: it is rough. i was always the first to be told to do choirs and be a shining example to my siblings, even if my younger ones were more inspiring or were more talented. my youngest brother did a lot growing up. playing Violin, was in film school for a while, was a mechanic and is a wiz with computers. i have to Google how to do specific stuff like fixing a minor hiccup with my computer. and then my younger sister was pretty much a straight A student who graduated at the top of her class and was a really good cheerleader...while i struggled with school, barely did any after school stuff and when i did wasn't a lot.
it's rough being the oldest and not knowing what you want to do with your life and... it's strange how well Disney encapsulates it into a well tuned movie. i mean, i honestly feel like Bruno, Maribel and Abuela all in one some times.

And it drives me MAD cleaning up after my siblings. It’s hard. Honestly I’m just book smart. My brother is a whiz with cars and my sister (sigh)🙄, is an aspiring singer. What do i want to do with myself. Barely into highschool and I just feel like I’m the one who does the chores and has nothing to offer. I’m not social butterflies like either of them, nor am I athletic in any way. I can’t even ride a bike. Before, my brother and I didn’t have the best upbringing and then we came to live with my dad, his daughter and wife. Everytime I feel like I’m making some sort of attempt at getting out this hole, i get sucked down even further…. It’s a shitty feeling.

I can't believe I'm just now watching your reaction. I absolutely ADORE this movie. It's really connected to issues of self-worth and interfamilial relationships, and it makes me cry every time I see it.
Abuela's backstory never fails to hit me where it hurts. Imagine having seemingly anything one would want. A loving family, a house, a life partner, newborn babies (that one's not too necessary, but I'm making broad generalisations). Then something threatens not only your life, but the life of those you love. Imagine the fear. The pain. Imagine losing your home and the love of your life almost at the same time. Imagine then the burden of keeping a whole community safe with seemingly no one there to help you.
I'm kinda like Isabela in a way. I learned to read and write early and was better behaved than my older sister, plus my mother had a miscarriage before me, so I was soon the golden child. "Smart", good-natured, well-behaved, and eager to please my parents. But my parents, especially my mother, had very specific expectations for who and how I had to be. It's gotten harder to be myself around them because people change, I've changed, and I keep figuring things about myself, and they are not the type to be accepting of what I've figured out. Which makes me feel a bit like Bruno. Because my family won't be okay with who I really am, but I still love my family. And I wish one day they maybe see that who I am isn't perfect, but it's me (I really relate to Isabela in this aspect). And that I'm still their child, no matter what I wear or who I love or what my gender is or what mental disabilities I have. Meanwhile, I'm stuck feeling like Mirabel in the second song. I would do ANYTHING to make my family proud, but some things are just out of my capabilities, things I don't control. I wish someday I will have them accept me as they do Mirabel in the last song.

I think Bruno's room changes according to his wishes, even if just subconsiously. There are so many stairs to his vision room, because his power shouldn't be used frivolously. If he's going to see the future it should be reserved for something really important. And maybe the stairs grew as he and others became more weary of his visions. I like that the room has become unreachable and even collapses when Mirabel goes looking for that vision, because Bruno doesn't want anyone to see it.

28:15 If you pay attention to the melody of "Dos Oruguitas," you can hear that it's the same melody of Abuela Alma's part in the song "Meeting the Family Madrigal." You can hear the melody here at 4:22 in Abuela's verse, but it means even more when you realize that "Dos Oruguitas" is the song of her life and love with Abuelo Pedro, and her grief at losing him, and eventually reconciling the pain her grief caused Mirabel and learning to move forward. And she's singing the melody of what's basically the song of her life when she sings about keeping up a strong front that the Madrigals are perfect, their Gifts are failproof, and toxic perfectionism with a heavy dose of generational trauma. These are her lyrics:
"We swear to always help those around us
And earn the miracle that somehow found us
The town keeps growing, the world keeps turning
But work and dedication will keep the miracle burning
And each new generation must keep the miracle burning"
She's learned to push down her grief and keep working to serve others. Like Luisa, she thinks the townspeople will think less of the family if they don't use their Gifts to constantly serve them. Like Isabela, she thinks the family's image has to be perfect at all times. And she also believes that the Gifts are the only thing that makes the family worthy of love and respect from non-Gifted people. In reality, Pedro's sacrifice was meant for her and their family and their town to have a better life, not to live a life trapped in lonely servitude under a veil of perfectionism. But she was in too much pain to see it until the Gifts were gone. Mirabel did what the first line in the movie, spoken by Abuela, said to do: She opened Abuela's eyes.

I feel like Abuela wasn't really a " villain " per say. As she explained she just wanted to make sure everything was perfect so she didn't have to go through loss again. She witnessed losing her husband, losing her son, her granddaughter losing her door. She wanted everything to be perfect but in the end she realized that you don't have to be perfect and I love that. Disney has done such an amazing job with the messages in all these movies. Big Hero 6 talked about loss and how you can let it consume you or learn to rely on those around you and let them help you move on. Luca talked about parental abandonment and acceptance and the ability to find new family in the people around you. And now Encanto talks about how everyone has a gift or something that makes them special but there's no reason to be perfect and it's okay to have flaws.

Did you even watch the movie? Other than Abuela and Isabela, everyone else in the family was caring towards Mirabel. How did you even come to that conclusion

@@Sagacypher no matter what reason she has, abuela treated mirable like shit when she didn't get her gift.

I feel like you are one of the first people I've seen that understands the point of the movie! Mirabel didn't receive a gift bc if she had one, she wouldn't have been able to see or help the family realize that they're losing sight of what gave them the miracle in the first place (the bond and love for family).

I so love this movie. Everyone in this movie have their different characters, and every screens all have connections with what happened before.I think magic is equal to family and their connection. So love this movie I have already watched this fourth. The last thing I want to tell is that Camilo is so cute!!!!!!He is my favorite.

Encanto is SUCH a beautiful movie! I saw it in theaters and then again with my whole family on Christmas Eve. I like that Mirabel didn't get a "gift" in the end, as well. You don't need special magic powers to be special or useful. The fan theory is actually that she's meant to be Abuela's successor, since just like how Abuela received a Miracle 50 years before, Mirabel was the one to bring the Miracle back at the end. Mirabel has empathy. She brings everyone together and watches over the magic. That's who she is, and she doesn't need a gift to do that. It's just her being her, and I think it's perfect.

5:45 The children are very perceptive, my guess is that Antonio noticed the subtle treatment that Mirabel being different receives from the family, like, in a corner. That's why he's nervous about the whole thing, he's afraid of ending up in that place.
23:05 The ritual is something he developed over time to attract luck hoping for a good outcome. Bruno became superstitious after all that happened. Sand and an open space is all he needs for his visions. It is curious that it's sand that he uses because sand when heats it becomes glass, similar to those green rectangles.
I love your reaction I was sobbing and laughing with you.
