Mirabel walking Antonio to his door is “not okay” because her gift didn’t work, no one knows why, so the fear is that she might jinx it for him.
-If it hadn’t worked again, she’d have been blamed.

    • @winkcla

I imagine that she also thinks she "can't" emotionally. She's already being reminded of her own ceremony and fears walking down the aisle would be even worse, which is then illustrated through the walk/flashback sequence

So, I'm sure it's been mentioned but: Pepa's emotional kids: see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil (Camilo-shapeshifts, Antonio-speaks to animals, and Dolores-hears everything). Then Julieta heals with food: beauty, brains, and brawn (Luisa-brawn, Isabela-beauty, & Mirabel-brains). Plus, Abuela has no gifts besides caring for the casita and Mirabel is going to take over...consider how the casita listens to her as well. That's why she didn't receive her door when she did. She needed to have the hardship to understand.

Know this comment is almost a year old, but just jumping in to add on. There's an Encanto novel that tells the story from the perspective of all three of the sisters (Luisa, Isabela, Mirabel). In Isabela's chapters you also learn that another reason she's jealous of/resents Mirabel is because their parents give more attention and affection to Mirabel. Obviously it happens unintentionally as a side affect of them trying to make sure that Mirabel doesn't feel less special because of her gift and Isabela knows that intellectually, but that doesn't mean it hurts her any less. She's also jealous because Mirabel recieves love unconditionally just for being herself, while Isabel feels she has to perform and play "her role" in order to be loved and worthy.

    Loved this movie, great commentary.
My personal theory on why Isabella doesn't like Mirabel isn't that Isa is jealous of Mirabel not having powers, but because she is jealous of Mirabel having the freedom to do whatever she wants to do. Mirabel can literally do anything she wants to do, because Abuela relies on those with powers to do everything. Isa on the other hand has had her entire life planned out for her, and doesn't get to make any of her own choices. Did you notice how much Isa looks like the younger Abuela Alma, and how much Isa's boyfriend looks like Abuelo Pedro? Alma is literally trying to force the life she was robbed of onto Isabella.

I like the detail in Bruno’s song where everyone is talking about how terrible their prophecy is except Isabela gets told that her life is perfect, “he told me that the life of my dreams would be promised and someday be mine” She seems to be an exception in the song but then we later realize how she also views this prophecy negatively since she became stuck with being perfect

If I remember correctly, in Colombia when someone says it’s gonna rain on a wedding day, it means that the marriage is not going to work, so that’s why Pepa was worried and anxious.
Isabela’s problem is something big in latinoamerican culture, the first (the golden child) is always use as a reflection of a perfect family, they’re supposed to be good at everything, we get to carry a lot of responsibilities like school, work, our presence revolves on how others see us, I got a lot of psychological anxiety and trauma since I was the golden child on my family, I used to cry every time I got a bad grade (like 8 or 9 out pf 10), I was under so much pressure that now I can’t even see one imperfection because I would got anxious.
Being the older one, is basically being the role model for the younger ones, so we can’t be anything but perfect, zero mistakes because if one of the younger ones does something bag, it would be of fault.
PD: Sorry for the typos, my English sucks.

But in results I have depression since 12 (In 2023 I'll make 19) and later I also acquired anxiety... So yeah...

The movie is based in Columbia (people from there have said the recognize bits of the landscape), and as for _time..._ that's a little less clear. This sort of thing has happened at least twice, around the 1900s and again in the 1950s. The presence of a camera doesn't help, either would work there, and there's more _painting_ than photos around. No electricity _could_ mean earlier, or it could just mean their tiny village didn't have people who knew how to make a generator and all the things that run _on_ electricity.
Of course, being Disney, realistically just because it's somewhat based on a place doesn't mean it's 'historical' in that way. It's an attempt to be 'inspired by' that instead of taking it directly. They did the same thing with Moana (where it _really_ had to be 'inspired by' since there are _dozens_ of variations of the Maui story, and lots of sub-cultures... and because of that it was either focus on _one_ while excluding the rest, or do something of a mash-up, which is what they did, and some Polynesians were _happy_ that they were seen, others _ticked_ that they were mashed together as one).
"...some of these powers are cooler than others..."
Several of them are an outright _curse._ And _one_ of them might be... the source of the _true_ villain in this movie:

For most, that doesn't happen. In my case my parents are a little narcissistic and don't believe anything they did was wrong or they're too blinded by things that happened to them. It reminds me of the time in The Lord of the Rings books, when Bilbo and Frodo meet again in Rivendell, and Billbo is tempted by the ring once more. He sees the look on Frodo's face and understands in a flash how he had been blind to the ring's influence, up until that moment.

So mirabel, as the miracle herself, can communicate with and understand casita. Her powers were essentially dormant, as a child couldn’t bear the weight, and when she says she’s ready for a miracle, casita strata the process of transferring the miracle from the candle to mirabel. Once she healed the trauma, it worked it out with everyone, all the powers came back to everyone. Now, all that being said; mirabel better have the biggest room in the house. 😂❤

Also, Delores did tell people she could hear him. She talked about rats in the walls, and mentioned it in the song We Don’t Talk About Bruno. No one really takes it seriously though bc they think he’s long gone. Plus ya know, there’s the crazy theory she’s evil, and didn’t make more of an effort to let people know on purpose.
