It was pointed out to me that the Abuela had PTSD and Survivor Guilt. She was blessed with this magic that saved her community. She was always worried about it all going away. She put pressure on herself to make sure she “deserved” to survive that she lost sight of her family being people that needed love. She was too focused on making sure the community was happy.
I think the idea that Mirabel's gift is basically the same as the grandmother's- directly tied into the encanto & casita itself- so that she can step into Abuela's role when she passes is very likely to be true. It also explains why the house only breaks completely and "dies" when Abuela & Mirabel are openly in head-to-head conflict with each other, it's been cracking apart from the various family members feeling alienated or pressured into certain roles but it's only when the two "hearts" of the encanto & casita are in direct conflict with one another that it can't hold itself together anymore.
Bruno was willing to take the blame again to spare Mirabelle the blame.
Honestly, Pepa and Doleres's powers aren't as great because Pepa had to keep her emotions in check and never got to be mad, sad, or whatever. And Doleres probably had to hear a lot of uncomfortable things and she has to quietly talk because she is sensitive to loud sounds
I loved you reaction!! There are some reactors who don't react at all, and there are the ones who speak too much and do not pay attention to the movie. You reacted to it, giving good commentaries, and still payed attention to the details and to the story. Great reaction! I would also love to see you reacting to Tangled, if you haven't watched it yet :)
I love the two family photos taken. The first is the “perfect” one, but it’s incomplete. The next/last family photo has everyone, and clearly isn’t “perfect” but it’s much more natural and everyone is being themselves , which honestly makes it perfect 🥺.
Also the fact that the first picture was “perfect” (by excluding mirabel, the one without a gift) and then at the end the photo was blurry, they weren’t posing, it was “imperfect”, like their family :)
I know it's for comedy sake and we're not supposed to look so deep into it, but that guy in the beginning probably thought he was being genuinely nice. If you think about it, he's the only one other than her parents that actively thought of getting something for Mirabell at all.
There are some fans that think Mirabel might be the next head of the family. She didn't get a direct gift like her sisters and cousins, but despite creating the miracle in the first place Alma doesn't have a gift ether. Although in one draft of the film her gift effected the house. Eventually the house's magic became independent of her during the writing phase, but Mirabel seems to have a strong connection to the house and was able to restore the miracle. Not getting a gift does give her a different perspective, which could help.
Didn't notice this before, but the candle was never re-created. So where did the magic come from the second time? From Mirabel's doorknob. That's because Mirabel is the holder of the magic now. Also, since Mirabel waves to Casita in the exact same way Abuela did, that shows how the Matriarch of the family will be Mirabel, which makes sense since she cares SO MUCH about the family and knows everyone intimately enough to sing an entire song about them. Everything she does is for her family, and I don't think that's just to "make up" for her not getting a gift.
I like how the family picture at the end is so different casita sees them huddled together but still steps in like "No no that's not right, you're family bring it in!" and basically hugs them all together, while also essentially getting in the picture too hugging the family with the tiles.
I felt SO dumb after realizing Dolores (the cousin with the super hearing btw) could hear Bruno THE WHOLE ENTIRE TIME and she mentioned that she heard him in the walls in one of the songs!!!😭
According to the director- the last time Abuela Alma smiled at Mirabel was just before her gift ceremony - and that is part of the reason she is so desperate for her approval - it's been 10 years.

if you can definitely watch this in Spanish, at the end when Antonio hands Mirabel the doorknob in Spanish he says "This was waiting here for you" and makes it a bit more heartfelt ^^
You hit the nail on the head at the end when you said that the whole house is her's, not just a single room -- what I love is that the front door's animation and artistry fully shows that Mirabel's gift all along was being the heart of the family, even thought it wasn't a supernatural "power" the way the rest of the family had, and it was no less magical (and in fact she is the key to the whole magic by the end). Everyone got a door when they got their power, which showed them etched more brightly in the center and the depiction of their family etched more lightly all around them. Then, the room being the door was a manifestation of their power. With Mirabel, her door ceremony when she was five didn't work because it was the wrong door - her door had to be the FRONT door, because her power is being the heart of the family, and her room is the whole house, being the manifestation of that power (which is also shown by her closer connection with Casita, and the fact that Mirabel appears to be the new candle, returning the magic to the house and restoring her family members' powers). If you look closely at the front door at the end, Mirabel is etched more brightly and in the center, with the depiction of her power, her family, in lighter etching all around her, just like the other magical doors in the house. She always had a power, her failed door was just in the wrong spot and her power was a more subtle magic than the more "out-there" powers, so no one realized that she did have a gift until the end. I also believe that Mirabel will be the next community leader, like Abuela.
Abuela was the key to getting the magic back. She represents those with emotional detachment PTSD. Basically people who suffer PTSD will go to great lengths to avoid what makes them remember the trauma they endured. And they expect that of the people around them. Abuela pushes her family to pure chaos & expects them to act like everything is fine.
