The last lyric in the Razor's Edge part of Octavarium "This story ends where it began" references the intro to The Root Of All Evil hence the outro as well as Portnoy's decision to end that series of albums, and combining the intros to The Glass Prison and The Root Of All Evil to make the outro for The Shattered Fortress makes perfect sense as The Glass Prison was the start of the Twelve Step Suite, and The Root Of All Evil while it was the third song in the suite it was the opening track to Octavarium it makes sense as they were both known for opening their own suite each, I also just remembered the last 2 songs on Images And Words Wait For Sleep was a prelude to Learning To Live sharing melodies, similar thing done on A Dramatic Turn Of Events with the songs Far From Heaven and Breaking All Illusions

Connection between Mirror and Space Dye Vest. In Mirror, on the part "I'll bever hurt you again", the guitar part that follows it's equal to the piano part on the verse of Space Dye Vest, "Falling trough pages of Martens on angels...".
Another connection I just realised only sharing melodies though from Images And Word were Wait For Sleep as a prelude to Learning To Live, and on A Dramatic Turn Of Events the same structure was done with Far From Heaven to Breaking All Illusions
They do that a lot, have a short prelude before one of their 10m songs. Vacant is the most natural example but theres also Wait for Sleep, Far From Heaven, Hell's Kitchen and others
Also why is this video almost three and a half years old, yet the oldest comment was made three months ago... ? I smell "buried by the algorithm", folks.
So it seems upon reaching Octavrium you get trapped in it. And you get stuck in a loop of infinity basically falling into infinity. Now I see what Portnoy did there. Probably why he left originally he wan'ts to escape from the enemy inside.
On the other hand, the opening of In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1 is so mindblowing and out of nowhere precisely because we had no idea what to expect with Systematic Chaos.

If you listen closely, you can hear all these albums were recorded by the same band
Thank you for the insight, I never thought that I've missed such crucial detail.
What?? Naah man you're tripping
😮
Oh really
That just can't be trueee
The fact that Octavarium loops back into itself is amazing
The story ends where it begins, my friend.
There are lots of albums that do that, but it may fit Octavarium the best, given it's concept.
We move in circles...
Nonagon infinity opens the door
(This is a reference for a king gizzard album called Nonagon Infinity, an album who (the same as octavarium) loops into itself but literally every song is connected to each other)
That's why the song says "trapped inside this octavarium"
You just know every time they finish an album they look at each other an go, 'welp, at least we know how the next one starts!'
They always connect album to album song to song. It’s the story of Dream Theater itself
Octavarium ends it tho. It’s a loop instead of leading into the next album.
@@giygas9305 all stories must end

Also that rhythm in TROAE is in itself a reference to This Dying Soul. So the ending of The Shattered Fortress is a three-way reference.
Glass prison, dying soul, ROAE, repentance, and shattered fortress are all parts of the 12step suite. They all have intentional motif reprises amongst them.

It actually loops back to the beginning of TGP and The Root of All Evil at the same time!

But that's obvious dude, it's about Metropolis after all. No surprises there
The most artistic and beautiful band there is

Didn't know about the connection between the twelve step suit
I have also realized that at the end of the shatterred fortress there's also the beginning of the root of all evil hidden deep inside

Except for the fact the original ending of Octavarium ended with a flute and was leaked early
The root of all evil can barley be heard at the end of the shattered fortress
Excellent
This is awesome!!
Very helpful
I'm still waiting for what comes next after Octavarium, I've always talked about this with my friends
The ending of The Count Of Tuscany and the beginning of On The Backs Of Angels are quite similar too, though I'm not sure that was done on purpose.
This is why i love mike portnoy write the music!
I knew it 🔥🔥
The Count of Tuscany -> On the back of Angels
I wonder why they stopped doing this after octavarium
Portnoy wasn't a fan of always starting an album the way the last one ended, so they decided to tie it back with the loop of octavarium
Octavarium ending where it began was fitting for the themes of the album, as octavarium says "this story ends where it begins"
They kinda did it again though. With Count of Tuscany to Angels, and subverting the concept with Shattered Fortress to Root of all Evil.
The Count of Tuscany is connected with On The Backs of Angels

Why did they quit doing this?
and they just had to end it in Octavarium as a sign that they had to move to new music label to RoadRunner
