WHO is his manipulating? what manipulative language is he displaying? none. if being open about your past is manipulative, you might as well call me a sociopath. you might have a lot of healing to do. projection isn’t right. if you don’t like him, don’t watch or read up anything about him. it is so simple.

It's the curse and blessing of an artists life: "there is no art without suffering" Art is a productive form of aggression or fear translated to an artistic medium. But a lot of ambitious people actually suffer a case of low self esteem, which they compensate by trying to accomplish more than their peers.

Good on him for trying to escape the DDR though through that escape route many others had discovered. At the time he didn't know if the Berlin Wall would fall soon or whether he would see family again. It meant also leaving all his friends and nearly all his possessions behind and not knowing if he could get a job in the west or adapt to it. He must have had to be desperate to escape and being arrested for being in the wrong place at the wrong time was the last straw.
That reminded me of the film Balloon where two East German families after a few attempts escaped in a home made hot air balloon and landed in Bavaria. It was set in 1979. The Stasi were on their trail because on their first failed attempt one of them dropped some medication and they traced them through that. On the way to the woods where they launched they passed the homes of relatives thinking they would never see them again. Yet Germany was reunited eleven years later. In the meantime though elderly relatives could have passed on.

damned this guy gets real in this interview. I had no idea he had such a rough upbringing. Sometimes these challenges can make or break you in life. Glad he found a positive way to channel the angst and make some powerful music to inspire us and make us feel powerful when we are at our weakest. I too had a very similar childhood and I let the challenges drive me in life rather than destroy me. Inspiring to find this in common with Richard.

This is so very sad to hear. How he was treated by his Mother was heartbreaking, every child wants the love of their parents, particularly their Mother. She never told him where his Father went, which is so cruel. My Father was an abusive, and cruel man.The way they made you feel as a child haunts you as you get older. Richard has done so well, he should be happy, but there is something missing, having a Mother to say how proud they are of his amazing talent, and success.

Especially without resorting to rehab and 12 step courses. I read that Paul Landers has had more nervous breakdowns than anyone else in the band but isn't as self aware as Richard is or at least doesn't talk about them. My dad has spent his life dealing with losing his mother to cancer age 14, it does really bad stuff to people when they lose parents... my ex was also deeply troubled by her dad being killed in a crash at age 8. It pauses certain aspects of mental development, and has this bitter-sweet effect of them growing into adults who are deeply in touch with the hurting child inside them. Children who are forced to be "real" adults too young... Creative you say? You nailed it! Such people often self medicate and heal through creativity.
The bravery it takes is beyond words, my dad can only just talk about losing his mother without crying age 69...
Interestingly, my dad is such a creative and talented musician that he's totally unable to organise himself to finish anything, and my ex was literally the real life female version of Ed Sheeran (her songs were all absolutely genuine, not a word was false sentimental crap... she regularly made grown adults cry at open mic nights). Her music gave away her deepest feelings, and in hindsight, her best song was her knowing deep down we could never last (which we did, for 8 years). I say that as an experienced musician with all honesty, both of them don't even have to TRY to blow people away, and equally, they don't value their skill, because they don't feel like they've earned it.

It's easier to see live in say 1997, but he's so... SO into the music, he's playing full force, 100% for his own soul... there's no ego there. It's only obvious to some people when someone looks like their acting, or showing off, but they'd be doing exactly the same thing with no one watching! It's mesmerising, and people don't realise they're doing it until someone points it out!
Paul and Richard play with such intense energy that people try to imitate, but you can't fake it easily... it looks awful if you KNOW that feeling ("100 Jahre Rammstein" and Bizarre Festival Köln 1996 and 1997 is where I fell in love with how Paul plays guitar just like you put into words). Funny, women are much more comfortable with expressing that enjoyment (I'm making a possibly catastrophic assumption about the identity of the person behind the comment :S)...
As a guy, I can only describe Paul's guitar playing as, totally primal, and somehow incredibly sexual, in a musical way. As in, when I see Paul play in his prime, I feel musically "turned on" by someone expressing their deepest physicality so openly, and it makes me go and treat my instrument in the same passionately aggressive way he does. I think men get weirded out by that feeling!
I'm not sure it would be any different if I were gay or just plain found Paul really sexually attractive... It's all about how he plays. I do the same I think with women who are really impressive singers or musicians, the music shines brighter than any feelings of attraction first and foremost, anything else I think about them is just, eh, human nature. Yawn, humans have a fascination with the act behind reproduction, as if that's not crystal clear in this world!
(Matt Bellamy does the same for me at Muse playing Glastonbury 2004, but his guitar playing is really... REALLY dark and violent... I'm not gonna say the word, but he plays his guitar all the way from lovingly to... disgustingly violently abusive, to the point where he is infamous for destroying his guitars on stage, but it's a guilty pleasure to watch almost).

    • @Corvid

I did exactly the same! I saved up for months when I was 20 and bought an ESP Eclipse Paul Landers signature, best decision I ever made. I learned every song, no matter how simple, because for years I had no interest in playing anything but Rammstein. I got into samplers and keyboards because of Flake, and ended up with so much equipment that I could write my own music. My band sounds nothing like Rammtein, but the philosiphy is there: simple music, done flawless perfect is just as powerful as anything else. Rammstein is so technically simple to play sometimes, but MAN is the music powerful.

It‘s very sad what he is talking about…. But it‘s also an example of how beautiful art can come about from pain. It explains also why Rammstein music is so ‚dark‘ - I think that Richard Kruspe and Till Lindemann are a very special creative pair: Lindemann is a poet and Kruspe is a music composer … naturally, both draw creative energy from the darker sides of human existence. Thanks to them for the beautiful and meaningful art they created.

As a musician, some of us put so much pressure on ourselves that it turns our one real reason for bring here into life or death, all the more so for anyone who knows they're onto something special (the whole of Rammstein from near day one)... no drug, no situation, not even love can say that need to create whatever you feel you're here for. But how sad he struggled so deeply as a child, it's almost impossible for him to truly know how much the world values him,

You give love to your children not strive to get love from them otherwise you are just contintuing the cycle of childhood emotional neglect. They didn't ask to be born and they owe you nothing.

Wow, this interview breaks my heart. Obviously, his fans love him. This band was such a huge influence on me. I had a really good childhood. However, when it came time for me to move out and be my own person, thats when problems started between my mom and I. It became very smothering. Their music was an outlet for the feelings I had. I really hope that he is able to find inner peace. I am sure I am not the only one this band has helped get through tough times.

I am astounded by how open he is with his demons and devices so much so that it gives me hope that the battle that I'm fighting myself does have an end. I pray everyday that I can be this that I can win this fight I'm sick and tired of all the excuses that I give myself to further my trip away from my family friends in life and into drugs it's a sad existence but it gives me hope we're hearing his words knowing that I can beat this. I'm not foolish enough to think that I can do it on my own not only do I respect and admire him as a musician God bless you man, finish the fight

@chunchun: Because of his childhood. Because of the not existing connection to his mother! His mother didn't see him in many ways. That's the ground/basic where his low selfesteem comes from. He had to run away from home at the age of Thirteen. He didn't get along with his stepfather very well. So he had to run away from home.

If Richard only knew how much some people love him and truly care for him... Certainly I do.
But, at the other side, I get that being famous is really hard thing to deal with psychologically and also I believe that it can be even very dangerous in many ways, so it might really make you vulnerable and lonely. Especially after a tough childhood.
I admire this man, for his talent, his bravery, his attitude, honesty. And I am forever grateful to him for Rammstein. Their music is my best friend, a shoulder to cry on, a way to escape. Just as he said himself about his relationship with music.

Parental rejection often leaves the child with and emotional hole that they try to fill by drinking/drug abuse/ issues with food/ compulsive shopping to try to fill the void. As he says, feelings of worthlessness never go. I feel for Richard, he had a similar upbringing to me.

I have the issues of food more. Been on the verge of anorexia nervosa a few times in my life so my weight dropped so I ended up with a BMI of 17 or 18 which is the lowest end of the normal weight range. Then going the other way with overeating. Under the age of 40 I had a fast metabolism so didn't gain too much weight and only went up to a BMI of 23 or 24. And then in my 40's had food intolerances which triggered off migraines so severe that I couldn't eat at all for two days and not much food after that for another two days. So it was either that or avoid the foods that trigger them off which are fattening and addictive anyway.
I was around feeders who were over generous with food and would feed you late into the night so I went for counselling to be able to stand up for myself against that. The counsellor told me that my body never lied. I would get a migraine just before a meeting so couldn't attend but if I gave my apologies then I wouldn't get the migraine. Also other people who wouldn't stop eating what was put in front of them and thinking I was odd for not eating much after a blow out the day before when staying in hotels. Feeders feed you to shut you up and shut you down so you don't feel much and are less inclined to stand up for yourself. You also end up with less energy as your body is constantly digesting food.
