All the comments about the size of heads and bodies: This is filmed in "kinescope"...Which means that a camera was pointed at a television screen...Remember that this is 1962 and television technology was still evolving. We should be so lucky to have this great footage! Stop being so critical and enjoy the music!

@R4-P17 hello....the "guy" on the left is Joey Dee. Quite simply, not a selective camera but rather the convex on the television screen and the angle the camera pointed to.

I remember 2nd grade in my Catholic school, our teacher had us do this dance for the class talent show. My mom took me to Bradlee’s just before the show to buy my red and white outfit. I know now, she had to wait until payday to afford that outfit, which happened to be the day of the talent show. So the after school/after work rush that was so frustrating and anxiety inducing back then, I so appreciate now! The red and white striped shirt fit perfectly, but the red skirt was a size too big! So during the whole performance, I found myself raising one hand to dance the peppermint twist, and using the other hand to pull up my skirt, which kept falling down over my white stockings with red hearts. My mom, as well as the entire crowd, found it so funny and cute! I didn’t appreciate being laughed at back then. But now, as a 42 year old Auntie-Mama to an 8 year old, I totally get it! And I find myself cracking up whenever I think about it!!
God, I LOVE my mom for all the sacrifices she made as a single mom that I never even noticed or understood.

I bought the 45 single of this at the school fair for something like 5 cents in about 1969. My siblings and I would listen to it over and over, usually with me playing a tennis racquet for the guitar part, and my sister playing the drums by hitting a chair with construction set rods. This was the A side of the single. The B side of the single was a continuation of the song.

None of you folks know what your talking about. I'm the "white boy" playing organ on this video with Joey, Roger, Dave, Sam and Wille. This was on the Dick Clark Show. And the names of the people who are listed as writers of the Peppermint Twist never wrote a thing. They stole the rights from Joey and it took many years to get redemption. This was the best version of Joey Dee and the Starliters and was ground breaking in civil rights. We all could write a book of our experiences in those years.

I am 77 years old and live in Essex in England. I had the good fortune to Twist at the Peppermint Twist Lounge in New York in 1962. I was breaking the law because you couldn't drink alcohol in the States until you were 21. I was with my family and we had travelled to Boston to see Terry Downes fight Paul Pender for the Middleweight Title of the World. The Peppermint Twist Lounge was crazy, a very small dance floor but it was packed. The waitresses were twisting on top of the rail that surrounded the dance floor. The atmosphere was fantastic, great memories.

Especially Jackie Wilson & Gene Pitt. There's a 45 minute interview on Tube, where he lays out his experiences in NYC. Friendship w Ronnie, n having Hendrix in his band. Buy his book & get schooled on The Peppermint Lounge & his life in music. Still performing & Rockin'. A treasure.

Titled "Joey Dee tells Tom the history of The Peppermint Lounge." Our store gives him every record & cd that comes in. He auctions them & donates the $ to Danny Thomas St Jude's kids cancer hospital. Great dude. Great shape. Still gigs. Up North, his son runs his band. Does some of the cruises out of Tampa, where I live. I'm from Detroit, n we listened to NYC radio. NYC was God of the industry. Detroit we were stuck w a lot of Motown plays music for white kids that can't dance. So a lot of great 45s weren't played.

People dont know how huge this song was back in the early 60's. It put the ''Peppermint Lounge'' on 45th street in NYC on the map and started an enormous dance craze for that time. Everyone wanted to go there and do this "dance"..... Huge for that time and the Twist era! A true classic from 1962 America! ("The Peppermint Twist" on the "ROULETTE" record label) These were the John F. Kennedy years. I met Joey Dee years ago and he was kind and patient and answered all my questions about "Rock an' Roll" and the music of that time. He was and is a true professional not to mention he helped to launch the careers of The Ronettes, Jimmy Hendrix, The Rascals to name a few. You gotta love this old footage, look at the way they dance & sing! Truly a time capsule! Thank you for the music & the wonderful " Peppermint Twist " memories Joey Dee & The Starliters.....

Remeber people, we're watching someting from 1962's TV. That tight coller on his neck and jacket (white shirt against a dark suit) makes his head seem larger. Great fun and great to see unity at that place in time!

Some will like this song, some will hate it. It mostly depends on your age? I liked it when it came out, when I was 12. And if you never understand the impact of the Beatles, this song is for you! Bland, mindless fun. I for one was ready for a new sound, in 63. My older brother and sister never understood the Beatles - like many that came after their reign.
For a lot of music, it is one of those 'you had to be there' things, and at the right age.

One of the most amazing lessons we can learn from watching talented muscians is the basic one: " Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover " ! So much amazing talent, and heart resides in folks who you wouldn't suspect .. until they start doing their thing. How much shit do you think these guys had to endure being an integrated group when public schools weren't integrated yet, when there where "whites only" signs in 1/3rd of the U.S. and racial violence was just a street corner away anywhere. Grow a Pair., and acknowledge this for what it is.. some famous music at the time.. and still danceable today, Thanks Amanda for putting this in Family terms

This is great for two reasons.
    1. It's a good pop song for its time. The Twist was a brand new dance, and all the rage among young folks.
    2. It was rare to see black and white dudes in the same band, playing on the same stage, at the same time.

You are incorrect on both counts, little boy. The dance the twist predated the most famous twist records, it started in the '50s, so no, it wasn't brand new" in 1962 when it hit No. 1
It was not unusual to have integrated bands in the early '60s, especially in the North.
come back after you've done your research

On this day in 1962 {Feb. 20th} Joey Dee & the Starliters performed "Peppermint Twist - Part One" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'
Three months earlier on Nov. 20th, 1961 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and on January 27th it peaked at #1 {for 3 weeks} and spent 18 weeks on the Top 100
The song it replaced at #1 was another 'twist' record; "The Twist" by Chubby Checker...
R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012} and Joey Dee will celebrate his 73rd birthday this coming June 11th

I thought I was the only one who noticed the guitar playing and drumming on this song. This was on the American Graffitti soundtrack so I've heard it for years on that. I'd always liked that simple sweet tone on the guitar on it and wondered what the solo was done on. Maybe it was done with a white Fender Jazzmaster like the guitar player is using on this video. If so, great! That would explain the half surf/half jazz tone on the solo!

Hendrix was a member of the band for a short time in 1965 before he went on
his own back in NYC. He was taken to London in 1966 by Chas Chandler and
was a star by 1967. If you saw him with The Starliters in 67-68 he would have
been just sitting in and that's entirely possible.

    • @TheWizardofRandR
      @TheWizardofRandR 7 лет назад

Not maybe just possible ....I was there that night , just fuzzy on what year but pretty sure it was before he went overseas and gained Fame . It was a shame America wasn't hip to his Sound til all the Brit Blues Rockers ( who most bands were into the blues Artists of previous decades , it took the Blues Brothers to wake up America , but better late then ever. I was @ Ronnie Scott's in London when Professor Longhair played there ) Clapton also helped wake America up too , and some other Brit Musician too ! I'd love to tell you the night I sat in In NOLA and sang with SUGARDADDY at the IVANHOE on Bourbon St. when Joe Cocker was to loaded and almost fell off stage , So Lon Price the Sax player got me up to do my 2 songs , we did St.James Infirmary & Mustang Sally and I got a standing ovation....NEW ORLEANS of the 70s was incredible ! I even sang with Johnny Winter and Jimmy MaCollough of Wings before he died ! Many more , the Band a regular at the Ivanhoe had so many great Band members besides LON who was later with Billy & the Beaters , Steve Howard who joined WINGS after playing on album recorded in NOLA and Alan Toussaint produced it or recorded it ,long time ago it seems like , & Marshall Cyr of White Trash !

I totally believe you, Mr. Wizard. Just wanted to note that Hendrix
was a member of The Starliters in '65 and basically review his time
line. Whether it was '65 or '67 you saw him matters not at all. He loved
to sit in all of his career, especially with friends. As I'm sure you know,
there are myriad of stories about him, who he played with and when.
I opened a show for him with my college band in 1968 and that was
a life changing experience, watching from the wings as he did his
his whole bag of tricks. Seeing Jimi Hendrix anytime or anywhere in
his short but earth shaking career was something no one forgets -
good or bad, but mostly all good. Joey Dee has had wonderful words
for Hendrix, and you can google all that of course. Happy New Year!

    • @TheWizardofRandR

Back then , neither one of us really knew what a legend we were watching ....are you from NYC ? I graduated 1964 from Delehanty HS in Jamaica , Queens and joined USAF after 6 months at St. John's U. , in Jan.'65
I went to Murray the K's Show at RKO 57 or 58th th St. where the WHO & Cream appeared with many of the Top 40 Hit acts like the 4 Seasons , I very much disliked their performances , I hadn't really gotten into that genre of R&R , as yet. It took my hearing Idlewild South by the Allman Brothers Band in 1970 to expand my music taste into the Hippie culture R&R !

and a professional since 1966, my sophomore year in college. Seeing

about him but "experiencing" him was amazing.
