      My classic station that I listen to always plays the Fugee's version... it irritates me everytime. Yes, Lauryn Hill can sing, but the arraignment is weird, and ruins the vibe of the song.

  • @leannmiller7153

    Lori Lieberman was inspired after hearing Don McLean ( American Pie, Vincent) sing Empty Chairs in a small club in LA. She said tears were running down her face, while she was writing notes on a cocktail napkin. She took her notes to her producers who were working on her album. They helped complete it, but screwed her out of any writing credits. It was released, but didn’t become well known until Roberta Flack covered it. I believe Lauren Hill’s cover was a big hit too.

      Lauryn Hill as a part of The Fugees did a terrific job of reimagining the song in their genre for sure; brought it to a whole new generation and was wildly successful with it. The video actually includes a cameo of Roberta herself!

    • @carolynquinn8325
      @carolynquinn8325 4 месяца назад

      @@O_Towne_Bear I'm not too sure where you got that idea from, because everything I've read that she's said about the Fugees version has been positive. Here's a direct quote from the Guardian in 2015:
      "I love hip-hop. In fact I love music, period. Lauryn Hill recorded Killing Me Softly [with the Fugees] and did an excellent job. She’s a genius musician and so is Wyclef Jean who co-produced it. I’m not going to hold on to that song with my heart and bleed to death while someone else covers it; I’m a music lover who has enough experience and common sense to know that it’s good they recorded it and had a hit. I had a hit with it, too, but I wasn’t the first person who recorded it".
      The Fugees hit number one in 20 countries, won a grammy, and the track is certified triple platinum. And because we all know that popularity doesnt always mean "good" -- It wasnt just commercially successful, but also enjoyed (and still does) critical acclaim as well.
      I've always considered it a beautiful and interesting homage. Just the intro alone - wow

    Ms. Flack, who was more well-known at the time, (early 70s), did this cover of the song not long after the original was released. The radio stations played her version and Ms. Lieberman's career was studied.
    By the way, Lori's rendition is, i.m.o., every bit as good.

    You absolutely need to hear her studio recording of THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE. She recorded it in 1969 on her debut album First Take, but never became a hit until nearly 3 years later, entirely because Clint Eastwood included it in his movie PLAY MISTY FOR ME (his 1971 directorial debut). If you think Killing Me Softly is "Haunting" - you ain't heard Roberta's best, yet! I get misty every time I hear it.

    This song and all the other suggestions are great but I'm going to suggest something different. She recorded a cover of a Leonard Cohen song called "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye" which is my favorite song of hers.

    ....SHE...was ADORED by the LGBTQ COMMUNITY...in the coffee houses of NYC back in the 60s because of her STUNNING ability to convey DEEP EMOTION...that is kept UNSPOKEN...and then she BLEW UP....she was then ADORED by the MUSIC INDUSTRY...and everyone else...one of her backup singers and vocal arrangers... also became the same way...and she lovingly and very soberly told him to go out on his own....and he did to HUGE SUCCESS ALSO...and he has HIS version of the song too...that he dedicated to her in his live performance...and his name was....LUTHER VANDROSS...

    Rita Coolridge "We're All Alone" is another good romantic song of that time.

    ❤She was so unique and I just love her. The Fugees do a SPECTACULAR cover of this song that you must do soon......kind of like the Dolly/Whitney thing. You will love it because both versions are 🔥🔥🔥

    If you like R&B, Soul, Jazz fusion you'd like Anita Baker's Sweet Love or Sade's Sweetest Taboo. Both ladies have great catalogs.

      I was SO into Anita Baker. She should have been invited to the We Are The World recording session.
